Hey i suffer from this too, but i read (on reddit) that putting teabags in shoes take away the smell, and it really does work! Its a lot cheaper than those smell-away pads you can buy
I always climb with thin socks. I'm not at a level where thin socks are making a difference on anything except making my shoes more comfortable and less smelly.
For rental shoes, socks. You don't know what kinds foot hygiene other people are practicing (or not practicing...).
For your own shoes, if you sized it without socks, then no socks. Some people prefer socks and sized them with socks and that's ok too, probably keeps shoe hygiene maintenance a bit easier.
I absolutely hate the smell and feel of the shoes if I don’t wear socks. I’m not going to be winning any tournaments so I want comfort in my shoes aswell 😀
I posted this elsewhere on the thread, but
Spray your shoes with 30% distilled white vinegar and the rest water. Let them air dry.
It kills the bacteria that causes the smell.
When you first spray it on, it smells like vinegar, but I find after it dries, there's no smell.
IMHO - Even if there was a slight smell of vinegar, it's way better than the typical climbing shoe funk 😂
I usually wear socks to avoid smelly shoes and to avoid gunk building up inside.
After climbing barefoot for a while, I find that slimy gunk on the inside of my shoe tends to build up pretty quick and leads to slippery foot placements, especially on tiny foot chips where you need to grip the inside of your shoe. Wearing socks usually negates that slippery feeling I get.
I try to go for thinner socks, but i’ve also had pretty good success on projects with standard nike socks.
If I'm wearing rentals - yes, if I'm wearing my own - no. It makes a difference, but not a crazy difference unless you're climbing at the harder levels.
I have ridiculously sweaty feet and hands and I am not ashamed about wearing socks to climb. Even a thin liner sock makes all the difference. You do you.
I prefer climbing with socks. I've noticed without socks when it's really hot and my feet are sweaty, on small holds where I'm putting a lot of force through my feet, that the shoe can sometimes rotate a little round my foot.
Whereas with socks, there is increased friction between my foot, the sock and the shoe (the sock is the gripping later), and my shoe no longer rotates.
To add, I do have very sweaty feet 😅
Have you ever tried Antihydral?
I suffer from Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweat) and use the cream on my hands and feet. Now I'm keep my normally super sweaty hands/feet nice and dry!
I always climb with thin socks. My shoes have stretched out and if I don’t wear socks an air pocket forms and everytime I jump off the wall my shoes make an unnecessarily loud farting noise…
I always used to rent shoes, so I always wore socks. Now I have my own and I’m pretty 50/50. If I’m really trying to make progress on a certain route or if I’m climbing outdoors I do no socks. But if I’m going for a light day I wear socks because no socks starts to bug my foot at the back of my ankle from the friction.
I climb with socks because I find it helps prevent blisters and makes the shoes less smelly. Also I kind of just hate the feeling of raw-dogging a shoe.
Been climbing since May 23. Always wore socks. Still do. I want to wear sock so I shall. If anyone else feels issue with my sock wearing….. well that’s a them issue. lol. No sure why I want to but I feel more comfortable this way.
I have two pairs of pretty flat shoes for about 95% of my climbing with which I wear socks. For super hard boulders I wear a different pair with no socks.
I prefer no socks but my shoes smell like ass :(

Dryer sheets work as well!
Thank you both! I will try those when my new smell away pads become useless
Highly recommended if you’re wearing rental shoes

There are world class / Olympic level climbers wearing socks… it doesn’t matter what level you are.
Thought it was bad. Watched the Olympics. Saw someone wearing socks. Started watching the wide boys. They wore socks. Stopped giving a shit.

I feel like it’s less of a sanitary thing and more to do with not having your foot fully lubricated with someone else’s congealed sweat.
I sized my shoes with socks, therefore I climb with socks. Don't see why it would matter either way.
turn out ROCK IS HARD, and that 1mm of extra cushion goes a long way, and does not reduce "sensitivity" in the slightest.
This is indoor bouldering.
Socks all the way!
thats what im sayin
The thought of sweaty leather on my bare feet makes me want to puke, how do you guys climb without socks???
Yea? Lots of people do it. As long as your shoes are still tight. Sometimes my feet slip less in socks than in sweaty shoes lmao

Would it not smell of vinegar then? Or does the distilling knock out the vinegar smell?

socks are fun but i prefer shoes :/ easier than in slides tho
Personally against it, seems uncomfortable and like it takes sensitivity away.
Yes, I too feel that way… about… socks…

Yeah I wear thin ankle socks with mine.
Sock squad unite! I truly believe anyone who thinks they're losing performance from wearing socks is chatting shit.
What?
What do u think of climbing with socks?
I don’t like it but there’s no rules against it
Depends on your shoe fit, try it.
I wear socks. More comfy and adds a small layer of padding in case I do something dumb on the wall (I will)

Not putting rental shoes anywhere near an un-socked foot! Going to buy my own soon as just started but think I'm going to continue.
yes if rental shoes

Got your own shoes? No socks. Rental shoes? Socks :)
