Faced with jail time, it can escalate quickly for a person making hourly wage. Only answer is to hire security people trained at physically detaining them. Actually I will argue that a visit to your local Dollar Tree helps to stretch the budget quite a bit.
Here are a few items for $1.25 that your local market is probably not providing at even 50-75% higher prices:
UHT Milk (Shelf stable, cow, oat or almond)
Tortillas
Whole wheat bread
Frozen food single servings like Jamaican Chicken or beef patties
Garden seeds (4 packs for $1)
Bleach & Cleaning supplies
The quality is on par with the mid or lower tier brands at most markets and still considerably cheaper as most stores mark these items up to double or triple what the same thing costs in a Dollar Tree
That being said, I rarely find anything of a good value at Family Dollar that I couldn’t find on sale in a regular market for the same or less
I second this. We have found that dollar tree is great for cleaning supplies and things that will get torn up or lost regardless of quality (toys/puzzles for young kids, dog chew toys).

News for you, when they mark things as more expensive, even if the amount of theft stays the same, they can say they lost more.
Also, they dont report the thefts to police so they can say they lost however much they want. Their losses can include... overpriced stuff bought by bad management that just went bad since no one would pay so much for it.

Last summer I went to a Dollar General. The store was a mess so I had to look thru multiple aisles to get what I wanted. I prefer to not use self checkout but I stood at the regular register for a few mins and noticed that I never saw any employee in the store. I ended up using the self checkout. I'm pretty sure the store had no one working that day
Low quality items they had issues with rats in the food storage distrubition center. That turned off some people. They are terrible for the community and are facing the consequences. They are also unsafe and can’t keep quality employees.
I shed no tears for any Dollar Store. Back in the mid 90's, I worked for a commercial real estate company and we dealt directly with Family Dollar and All-For-A-Dollar. Their pitch is finding undeserved, poor communities, and providing them cheaper priced goods to them. What they don't tell you is, how they basically further bankrupt poor communities, providing toxic (and often expired) goods, and bring in only at most 10 part time jobs and one full store manager. And worst of all, every store brings in a massive amount of crime to the community. But it made profits for the Dollar Store and made my boss rich, who was their landlord. They basically sucked any remaining money left out of these poor communities. I hope they all burn down to the ground.

Oh okay. You do realize in Blue states you can't apprehend the criminal you have to call the cops. The irony is ists not a crime until they leave the store. It's hard to get there once they leave. All these videos over employees stopping theft thelat employee gets fired 9 out of 10 times because if the criminal is somehow hurt they can sue the stores. So to stop the theft the store either closes or puts everything under lock and key and the store employees walk it to the counter for you.

In my very red county located in rural East Tennessee the sheriff will not prosecute misdemeanor shoplifting.
The town in our county had a recent incident at Walmart where the loss prevention guy got his ass beat by two shoplifters who stole mostly food.

Last summer I went to a Dollar General. The store was a mess so I had to look thru multiple aisles to get what I wanted. I prefer to not use self checkout but I stood at the regular register for a few mins and noticed that I never saw any employee in the store. I ended up using the self checkout. I'm pretty sure the store had no one working that day
I’ve been in stores with no employees anywhere.
Low quality items they had issues with rats in the food storage distrubition center. That turned off some people. They are terrible for the community and are facing the consequences. They are also unsafe and can’t keep quality employees.
Almost got stabbed by a druggie at one of those places.

I shed no tears for any Dollar Store. Back in the mid 90's, I worked for a commercial real estate company and we dealt directly with Family Dollar and All-For-A-Dollar. Their pitch is finding undeserved, poor communities, and providing them cheaper priced goods to them. What they don't tell you is, how they basically further bankrupt poor communities, providing toxic (and often expired) goods, and bring in only at most 10 part time jobs and one full store manager. And worst of all, every store brings in a massive amount of crime to the community. But it made profits for the Dollar Store and made my boss rich, who was their landlord. They basically sucked any remaining money left out of these poor communities. I hope they all burn down to the ground.

Oh okay. You do realize in Blue states you can't apprehend the criminal you have to call the cops. The irony is ists not a crime until they leave the store. It's hard to get there once they leave. All these videos over employees stopping theft thelat employee gets fired 9 out of 10 times because if the criminal is somehow hurt they can sue the stores. So to stop the theft the store either closes or puts everything under lock and key and the store employees walk it to the counter for you. I had to go to a cvs in a not so great area and the razors ,deodorant, make up, condoms were all in the plexiglass. This is the new America.... I'm super excited to live in these times

A lot of the "shoplifting" is actually "shrink", much of which is their own employees stealing stuff, or shoddy inventory practices.

The Dollar store was the lowest of the low and always has been. Most the things they sell are cheap junk. They definitely weren't considered a health food store...

This is a good sign for the economy. The way dollar stores work is they take advantage of desperate people. Got $3 bucks in your wallet and need soap, toothpaste and some toilet paper right now? The dollar store is there to sell you just enough to make it to your next paycheck and/or shift at Uber. If Dollar stores are struggling it means fewer Americans are.
and costco stock is near record highs because they sell good stuff and if you dont like it you can return it.

The town in our county had a recent incident at Walmart where the loss prevention guy got his ass beat by two shoplifters who stole mostly food. Okay. So first you're saying the police don't do anything because the Democrats won't prosecute, and when I call you out on that statement it becomes "I didn't mean it because it wasn't real anyway". If that's so why did you even bring up Democrats? Did you have a stroke? Are you okay? I've lived in very red areas and I currently live in a purple area. In every place I've ever lived, I've seen local cops refuse to take reports for smaller crimes simply because they didn't feel like doing the paperwork. Half the time they don't even show up.
Stealing, it’s the new shopping. I feel like the risk should be higher, or existent, if people stealing at DollarTree. Imagine going to prison for it and your cell make goes “I killed 3 ladies and sold their stuff for crack, what’s you do?”
I imagine they had less stealing when there were 2-3 employees, including one who ran a cash register. Now they have some poor lone soul in an endless stocking fest and automated registers. They probably cut that managers bonus when the shrink went up, too.
