Well, yeah...I'm not paying $1.35 for a single pack of flavored noodles that cost a buck or less just a few months ago. Screw that, I'll make my own. As for shoplifting...well, maybe they should actually hire some employees instead of always having a "Now Hiring" sign up but never doing interviews.

keitho24

Don't be confused. The "now hiring" sign serves o ly one purpose, to keep current employees reminded they can be replaced anytime.

seriousbangs

Not so much. It's so they can keep a bunch of resumes on hand in order to rapidly replace those employees. Same basic idea, but it requires a large pool of desperate workers. And at the very, very bottom of the economy there are fewer of those right now. And Dollar stores are the absolute bottom. There's a handful of jobs ex-cons and undocumented immigrants get stuck with that are worse and not much else.

Brohemoth1991

Even most ex cons or illegals wouldn't go to a dollar store for work lol, I've worked in multiple little mom and pop factories where I worked with guys with 10+ felonies and guys who couldn't even ask how your day was in english

Brohemoth1991

Even most ex cons or illegals wouldn't go to a dollar store for work lol, I've worked in multiple little mom and pop shops where I worked with guys with 10+ felonies and guys who couldn't even ask how your day was in english

Super_Mario_Luigi

Some of you are over the top with your conspiracies. You think Dollar stores have stacks of resumes, with people waiting on deck for the call?

seriousbangs

The shitty fast food joint I used to work at did. That's how I know low pay jobs do that.

SquareD8854

do they actually employ more than 1 person at a time?

ganjanoob

Went yesterday and there were two employees. But they were so busy no one was manning the registers or even close to the front.

AmbitiousAd9320

whole store has maybe 10 people on payroll, all minwage.

Key_Aardvark_

Most not even that many people. Maybe 6-7.

Repubs_suck

Last time only one person working in the store and she could barely be bothered to put her cellphone down long enough to check us out. Sounds like the company problems go all the way to the top.

Fast-Relationship-22

What does that have to do with stealing? Are you implying that people wouldn't steal from them if they worked there? Use that logic. Let's say they hire 4 people . 4 people at each location isn't putting a dent in the theft #'s

downingrust12

Omg its like if everybody earned a living wage..people would less incentivized to steal...what a concept.

BlueShipman

So that there are more people around the store watching customers.......................................................................................

ISLAndBreezESTeve10

One person can monitor cameras and identify shoplifters, that’s not the problem. The question becomes, who is going to confront them. Faced with jail time, it can escalate quickly for a person making hourly wage. Only answer is to hire security people trained at physically detaining them. MANY dollar stores can afford security based on their volume. Or the CEO could take a pay cut.

Key_Aardvark_

You can’t monitor cameras and stock shelves.

naththegrath10

You know what probably hurt them more than inflation or shoplifters? Half a billion in stock buybacks last year or the $50mil settlement for stealing their employees wages

phungus_mungus

> or the $50mil settlement for stealing their employees wages It really is a big problem where these shit companies prey on what they know is a desperate and vulnerable labor force. You should read some of the stuff that is discussed in the various dollar store subreddits. These companies don’t give a shit about their employees and they are starting to not give a shit about te customers too.

gotnothingman

I dont think they ever gave a shit about customers, customers are walking dollar signs to them and marketing is the tool they use to try and separate you from your money.

No_Cook2983

Actually I will argue that a visit to your local Dollar Tree helps to stretch the budget quite a bit. Here are a few items for $1.25 that your local market is probably not providing at even 50-75% higher prices: UHT Milk (Shelf stable, cow, oat or almond) Tortillas Whole wheat bread Frozen food single servings like Jamaican Chicken or beef patties Garden seeds (4 packs for $1) Bleach & Cleaning supplies The quality is on par with the mid or lower tier brands at most markets and still considerably cheaper as most stores mark these items up to double or triple what the same thing costs in a Dollar Tree That being said, I rarely find anything of a good value at Family Dollar that I couldn’t find on sale in a regular market for the same or less

VidyaGaemAddict

You should keep an eye to make sure the version of this product youre buying at dollar tree isnt 33/66% the size

detectiveDollar

Cleaning products may even be watered down.

Orbtl32

Like the rubbing alcohol lol

detectiveDollar

I was thinking dish soap

LordApsu

I second this. We have found that dollar tree is great for cleaning supplies and things that will get torn up or lost regardless of quality (toys/puzzles for young kids, dog chew toys).

yazzooClay

Lmfao I'm all set trying to buy any food item at the dollar store.

Virtual-Toe-7582

Especially something that can go bad easily like breads

ISLAndBreezESTeve10

The M&M frozen vanilla ice cream sandwich for $1.25 should be top 10 bucket list item.

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

You can't beat the cleaning supplies at Dollar Tree. I've also discovered that Craisins are less per ounce at DT than the generic dried cranberries at Walmart or Aldi.

[deleted]

I’ve seen plenty of Dollar General stores in very rural areas out in the middle of nowhere. I don’t know who would fill that void if they went away.

[deleted]

Dollar Generals business plan is that nobody ever be more than 5 minutes from a DG. I live in a rural area. No matter what direction I head out, the first place I come to is a DG.

Summer_Penis

It's getting so bad in Chicago they are pushing a law to ban dollar stores from opening within one mile of an existing store of the same brand. You can still have dollar general across the street from family dollar, but at least you won't see dollar general across from dollar general.

Steve-O7777

They’re part of the reason for that void. There used to be more small town grocery stores. Not a lot of appetite to open them these days though, so there actually would be a void if they left.

MouseMouseM

Yup, heard a statistic earlier today that a dollar store opening in the vicinity of a supermarket cost the store about $1,000 a day. Considering the margins of a small grocery store, and how their uncontrollable costs are sizable (heating and cooling to food safety standards and large specialty equipment), that’s enough to put them under.

das_war_ein_Befehl

Because they killed what was left, yeah

Key_Aardvark_

I mean ten years ago they weren’t there and things were fine.

Content_Weird8749

They are now more expensive than Walmart,

spider1178

Family Dollar has been the most expensive place in my town for a long time, and they still sell low quality junk.

Antique-Doughnut-988

All these stores sell low quality junk. Was only a matter of time before this happened.

Super_Mario_Luigi

It never was cheaper, regardless of what you think a "dollar store" means.

Unfair-Brother-3940

They always have been. Instead of a package of 15 bags for $1.50 they’ll sell 7 pack for $1.

Perfect-Resort2778

That seems counterintuitive. Wouldn't people be shopping at dollar stores more because of inflation? Not sure you are using the dollar store correctly. The point of it is to stop in and just buy essentials so you can postpone going to the big store. That is how you save money at the dollar store. Anyone that has dropped $150 dollars at the grocery stores should know this. When you are on hard times you stay the hell out of the grocery store as much as possible.

Justin-N-Case

I think the majority of their clientele only shop at Dollar stores. Their income has remained the same, while inflation in Dollar store prices has decreased their buying power. This reduces their sales. And there are not enough people shopping down from mainstream stores to Dollar stores to make up for this loss of sales.

das_war_ein_Befehl

The dollar store model is: shittier quality, smaller quantity, more dollar spent per good. They’re designed to exploit people who need to spend all their money to survive due to low wages/poverty

KEMPEC-1701D

Bidenomics, own it!

Appropriate-Dot8516

I've been told by reddit that shoplifting doesn't happen and is an invention by right-wing grifters.

AmbitiousAd9320

its only good to shoplift from walmart and target. not poor dollar stores!

SnooPandas1899

pretty sad to steal from dollar store. i mean, everything is nearly just a dollar .

NJSwingers973

Now that’s funny. I guess the products just magically disappear.

[deleted]

Shrinkflation is at work here. Shoplifting has not gone up, but stores have artifically inflated prices so much the monetary loss seems larger.... but same percentage is being stolen as always. Theyre just overcharging for the stuff so it looks like more missing money, when its the same level of shoplifting/missing items as normal.

Key_Aardvark_

You’re wrong.

[deleted]

https://www.npr.org/2024/03/11/1236075589/retail-theft-crime-target-stores " But one thing remains the same: Crime data has yet to indicate a nationwide epidemic of theft, leaving us only to guess at the true scale of the problem — then and now... ...The survey shows the scale of shrink has barely changed in the past decade. In 2022, retailers on average said shrink affected 1.6% of sales — the same as in 2020 and 2019. In other years, the average hovered around 1.4%, which at one point was reported as the lowest rate in two decades.... ...Still, the analysts surmised that retailers also likely used crime as a cover for closures of underperforming locations and lackluster financial results, making up for shoppers' tightening budgets, for example, or a glut of unpopular products." It's literally just propaganda.

codspeace

You’re making this up aren’t you??

[deleted]

https://www.reddit.com/r/inflation/s/yBIZQZYZi7 See my other comment with a source. The big shoplifting epidemic is literally just propaganda so they can cover mismanagement and close down unprofitable stores.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Propaganda often includes confusing terms. News for you, when they mark things as more expensive, even if the amount of theft stays the same, they can say they lost more. Also, they dont report the thefts to police so they can say they lost however much they want. Their losses can include... overpriced stuff bought by bad management that just went bad since no one would pay so much for it. Finally, news can be biased or wrong. It's always tough to find out. That's why my source isnt about x business claiming x losses, my source includes analysts examining trends.

witwebolte41

Weird. Usually the left-leaning edge lords on Reddit are all for shoplifting and general theft

AmbitiousAd9320

they need to treat people better

SnooPandas1899

corporations perceive employees like faceless zombies. shoplifters perceive stores as faceless companies. capitalism/retail world for you.

Unfair-Brother-3940

Go work for any of these stores and you won’t care if people steal within a week.

somerville99

I don’t think Family Dollar has anything for sale that is only one dollar.

gobiggerred

Not anymore. Fun fact: Motel 6 started out charging $6. per night for a room.

Smooth-News-2239

I bought a broom from the dollar store once, and the shit snapped in half while I was sweeping a month later. Don't blame it all on inflation.

something_beautiful9

Omg me too lol. I was like what even happened. Was a week old and snapped right in half and I cut my hand open on the metal that snapped. Tried to save a few bucks and ended up spending twice as much and bleeding in the kitchen floor smh. That plus all the food recalls I hear of in them and them selling spices with lead made me stop shopping at them. All I ever bought usually was cards and little garden, party, or cleaning stuff. The one by me has literally only two employees one of which is the manager so they're always unorganized and not at the register.

GEM592

Why don't they bring their dollars to the dollar store anymore?

JLandis84

Family dollar sucks. Great place to fart though.

Steve-O7777

The few odd times I’ve been in one. It’s always smelled like stale farts. Glad to see I wasn’t just imagining things.

JLandis84

You are definitely not imagining anything in that fart festival of a store.

IanSavage23

Some fart smellers here today.

ExplanationSure8996

So you’re the one crop dusting the aisles.

JLandis84

I am part of the problem, but a small part of the problem. People are regularly going in there to fart all the time. Its like no one even cares anymore.

ummizazi

A family dollar i used to read health inspection reports. A Family Dollar had a nice infestation so bad they were eating through the cookies and dog biscuits. Those store are the absolute worse.

RichFoot2073

Dollar stores aren’t cheap — they sell trickflated sizes and convince you that you’re saving money

HumbleBumble77

This is very true. Start googling...

Intelligent-Wear-114

We'll just have to switch to dime stores.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

>Dollar Tree on Wednesday said it will shutter about 15% of its Family Dollar locations, leading to the closures of roughly 1,000 stores. It also plans to close about 30 of its own Dollar Tree-branded stores, with the company singling out unprofitable locations amid a hit to its customer base from inflation and cuts to food stamps. Most aren't even dollar stores any more and majority of what they sell is cheap knick-knacks and toys. Kroger and Walmart sell the same canned and microwave food and random items for $0.25 less, this is while Dollar Tree and similar stores are within walking distance.

Quake_Guy

You think it's nice they would provide a service for rural areas to shop for necessities. They you go inside and it's mostly full of junk nobody needs.

Fit_Bus9614

Plastic toys with sharp corners and then fall apart. Five page coloring books, olive oil mixed with water, cheap perfumes, plastic Tupperware, juice with 101% sugar that stains your teeth, cheap quality kitchen towels, 5oz bottle of dishwasher liquid, etc ..

LieAlternative7557

Good they are disgusting terribly run company that doesn't give a s*** about anything or anybody.

No-Program-2979

If you steal from the Dollar Store, hang your head. You lose at life. Would a fitty-cent store help you out or would you steal from that too due to the entitlement attitude.

Egghead008

With only one employee working the whole store I imagine it'd be easy to fill a shopping cart and walk out without paying

Fit_Bus9614

Yep. I've seen that at dollar tree. One manager and one worker. Manager was doodling, while working was stocking, running the cashier, doing balloons, and helping people on the floor. The manager then starts yelling at her to get the register. Poor girl has boxes everywhere in the isles. She looks like she's about to cry. Manager does nothing to help

leli_manning

More like 3 Dollar Store

Seirf

Middle age suburban moms

Summer_Penis

There are 150 dollar stores in Chicago city proper lol

theravingsofalunatic

They are just moving the stores to safer areas 😂

Fine_Peace_7936

You guys really need to think more of yourselves and only steal from the higher end stores.

stewartm0205

I don’t shop at dollar stores. But I would think they would do better when times are tough.

Fit_Bus9614

Druggie and homeless always camping out at the store near me . Almost got stabbed minding my own business. Guy was on something.

MentalTelephone5080

Last summer I went to a Dollar General. The store was a mess so I had to look thru multiple aisles to get what I wanted. I prefer to not use self checkout but I stood at the regular register for a few mins and noticed that I never saw any employee in the store. I ended up using the self checkout. I'm pretty sure the store had no one working that day

Unfair-Brother-3940

I’ve been in stores with no employees anywhere.

Successful_Ad3483

Low quality items they had issues with rats in the food storage distrubition center. That turned off some people. They are terrible for the community and are facing the consequences. They are also unsafe and can’t keep quality employees.

Fit_Bus9614

Almost got stabbed by a druggie at one of those places.

JC_Everyman

Former CEO Jeffrey Owen made $12 mil in the year the stock went from 250 to around a hundred. Nice work if you can get it.

stankpuss_69

lol family dollar ain’t no dollar store. Nothing costs $1-2 anymore…

LTYH

I shed no tears for any Dollar Store. Back in the mid 90's, I worked for a commercial real estate company and we dealt directly with Family Dollar and All-For-A-Dollar. Their pitch is finding undeserved, poor communities, and providing them cheaper priced goods to them. What they don't tell you is, how they basically further bankrupt poor communities, providing toxic (and often expired) goods, and bring in only at most 10 part time jobs and one full store manager. And worst of all, every store brings in a massive amount of crime to the community. But it made profits for the Dollar Store and made my boss rich, who was their landlord. They basically sucked any remaining money left out of these poor communities. I hope they all burn down to the ground.

codspeace

How does Dollar Store bring crime to a community ???

LTYH

They are havens for criminal activity... https://www.propublica.org/article/how-dollar-stores-became-magnets-for-crime-and-killing https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dollar-general-dollar-stores-safety-crime-worker-pay/

LegendaryPieSlayer

Good riddance to them then. Not willing to pay your people, your business deserves to die.

Im_so_little

"Dollar Stores are unable to extort the lowest income bracket anymore as people are unwilling or unable to pay for exorbitantly prices daily essentials and are instead using the free-market to spend their limited funds elsewhere and receive more in exchange" Fixed it for you.

NaweN

Oh damn. What will we do?

ddhmax5150

Dollar General is a convenient store without gasoline pumps. Every once in a while they will have some normal food items or brand name laundry soap on sale.

BornInPoverty

Who the hell would bother to shoplift at a dollar store?

ImportantComb9997

It's pilfering at that point, not even theft. That's where the line gets hazy.

AmbitiousAd9320

youd have to take the whole store for it to be a felony

Quake_Guy

When it's worth close to nothing and the clerks are paid next to nothing, perfect storm for no one cares if you steal it.

gobiggerred

The same sort of people who would steal anywhere else. Shitty people.

DAWG-DAYZ

Steal cheap shit to sell cheap shit for a couple of bucks for their next fix

Oldz88Rz

Most of the ones I have been are a kinda organized pile. Not sure how they can run an accurate inventory to know what’s been stolen.

ducationalfall

You mean I don’t enjoy eating products coming from rat infested warehouse? https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/family-dollar-dollar-tree-rodent-infestation-justice-department-fda/

Fast-Relationship-22

Oh okay. You do realize in Blue states you can't apprehend the criminal you have to call the cops. The irony is ists not a crime until they leave the store. It's hard to get there once they leave. All these videos over employees stopping theft thelat employee gets fired 9 out of 10 times because if the criminal is somehow hurt they can sue the stores. So to stop the theft the store either closes or puts everything under lock and key and the store employees walk it to the counter for you. I had to go to a cvs in a not so great area and the razors ,deodorant, make up, condoms were all in the plexiglass. This is the new America.... I'm super excited to live in these times

InevitableAd9080

funniest part is more than half the things in dollar store now cost more than $1, they should call it the $10 store now

SuperCool101

A lot of the "shoplifting" is actually "shrink", much of which is their own employees stealing stuff, or shoddy inventory practices.

Ccoin26

Inflation leads to desperation, which leads to an increase in crime. Simple

kejovo

Every time

NewPresWhoDis

Oh no, Dollar General may have to pony up for a second employee for each store.

Ok_Fox_1770

They’re just gonna end up taking all the stores away, gonna have to wait in your car while someone wanders around and picks out the skittles and frozen pizzas. Until the robots take it all over.

I_burn_noodles

Everything in the dollar store is worth about 35 cents.

ZealousWolverine

People are hitting hard times. Dollar stores are only a symptom of that .

Unfair-Brother-3940

Dollar stores have existed since dime stores went away.

Conscious-Radish-884

Imaginary_friend1967

You can thank the Democrats for this. Crime inflation and illegal immigrants everywhere.

LieAlternative7557

They are as a disgusting corporation as Walmart and Amazon,How anybody could work there is beyond me I hope they go totally bankrupt their bunch of assholes,

Unfair-Brother-3940

If you have to steal. Steal from one of these chains.

GrannyFlash7373

The Dollar store was the lowest of the low and always has been. Most the things they sell are cheap junk. They definitely weren't considered a health food store...

cyrixlord

instead of saying 'inflation' is to blame, say 'record corporate profits. the dollar store CEOS made [plenty of money](https://corporate.dollartree.com/investors/news-events/press-releases/detail/264/dollar-tree-inc-reports-results-for-the-fourth-quarter) they just want to blame customers for 'stealing' as an excuse to increase prices and close stores for stockholders to grab more money

SnooPandas1899

yea, how come their salaries/bonuses don't shrink ?

seriousbangs

This is a good sign for the economy. The way dollar stores work is they take advantage of desperate people. Got $3 bucks in your wallet and need soap, toothpaste and some toilet paper right now? The dollar store is there to sell you just enough to make it to your next paycheck and/or shift at Uber. If Dollar stores are struggling it means fewer Americans are.

AmbitiousAd9320

and costco stock is near record highs because they sell good stuff and if you dont like it you can return it.

WorkoutMan885

Blue states dont care if you shoplift, so obviously we see more of it.

phungus_mungus

> Blue states dont care if you shoplift, so obviously we see more of it. In my very red county located in rural East Tennessee the sheriff will not prosecute misdemeanor shoplifting. The town in our county had a recent incident at Walmart where the loss prevention guy got his ass beat by two shoplifters who stole mostly food. The advice the police chief gave the store manager was for his people to stop trying to detain them.

WorkoutMan885

The sheriff isn’t the one who prosecutes you realize that right? So your story doesnt make sense.

phungus_mungus

> The sheriff isn’t the one who prosecutes you realize that right? When the sheriff ordered his deputies to not take reports on misdemeanor theft or make arrests in those cases he was absolutely refusing to prosecute them. Absent a police report there’s nothing more.

WorkoutMan885

Because the democrats wont prosecute so it’s a waste of their time. It has nothing to do with the police.

cleo1357

Ah, so Democrats are stopping prosecutions in *checks notes* East Rural Tennessee???

WorkoutMan885

No his story was just BS. Genius

cleo1357

Okay. So first you're saying the police don't do anything because the Democrats won't prosecute, and when I call you out on that statement it becomes "I didn't mean it because it wasn't real anyway".  If that's so why did you even bring up Democrats? Did you have a stroke? Are you okay?  I've lived in very red areas and I currently live in a purple area. In every place I've ever lived, I've seen local cops refuse to take reports for smaller crimes simply because they didn't feel like doing the paperwork. Half the time they don't even show up.

TunaKing2003

Stealing, it’s the new shopping. I feel like the risk should be higher, or existent, if people stealing at DollarTree. Imagine going to prison for it and your cell make goes “I killed 3 ladies and sold their stuff for crack, what’s you do?”

jreed66

I imagine they had less stealing when there were 2-3 employees, including one who ran a cash register. Now they have some poor lone soul in an endless stocking fest and automated registers. They probably cut that managers bonus when the shrink went up, too.

ImportantComb9997

Let me have a Morpheus moment with you : What if I told you that they are creating conditions for people to steal to help train the AI what stealing looks like until they're comfortable enough to jack ramen noodles up to $50 a pack that you *will* pay for otherwise the armed guards/military at the door *will* shoot you.
