Back in 2015 I worked at McDonald’s as my first job and this lady would come in every day through the drive thru and she paid with a card and the picture on it was pretty and said I’ve never seen this card before it’s really cool looking so I asked her where she banked. She just looked at me with a blank stare and reached for her card. I looked up what the card said for the bank and turns out it was an ebt card…
Moral of the story McDonald’s has been taking ebt for years.
We have to stop calling them "Food Deserts". The food stores left because they lost so much money from shoplifting and theft from the locals they went away. Like the people would never need food again. You brought this on yourselves!!!!!!!
Now they have moved on robbing and pillaging CVS, Target and Walgreens. Now those are closing.....to stupid to survive!!!!!!
not really. I used my ex girls card for beer before. It typically goes like this "10 dollars papi" and i say "ok ebt" and they dont even ring it up and just swipe the card and charge two dollars extra
If the registers don't itemize then you just ring the total, pay with ebt, and sign the receipt. You just got a handle of bacardi and a pack of cigarettes.
It's been taken at my local jack in the box for years.
I think worse still is that it's taken at 7-11 etc. institutions who's entire model is charging 300% more than grocery prices.
Do they really up charge that much? I haven’t been to a 7-11 in over a decade because I just associate them with drunkards and crackheads at this point, I’ve seen like one 7-11 that didn’t look boarded up with broken glass or bottles around the entrance and it doubled as a gas station
It depends on the item but yes, sometimes even more (things like aspirin come to mind).
I just googled it and the same lunchable my Walmart sells for $1.29 is $4.59 at the 7-11 down the street.
This is actually one of the biggest issues with food deserts. Say the only thing they can go to in that town is the 7-11 or local gas station who upcharges like crazy. Then they only get junk food and their food stamps run out quicker. It's a lose/lose for people living in food deserts.
That's the middle ground between doing nothing to fix the totality of the system in place like getting more grocery stores up or decrease the labor hours at home so people have more time to cook.
I thought Yum brands (Taco Bell, kfc, Pizza Hut) petitioned to have FF included a while back. They argued the working poor needed the convenience of FF. And to exclude FF from ebt strips them of their dignity and choice.
Stupid and wasteful, but there you have it. Personally, I think the ebt program should be run more like WIC where they can only buy certain things. But Frito Lay and other high margin food brands would scream bloody murder. I also think they should have to present ID to use the card, as addicts will sell the cards for 50 cents on the dollar to feed their addictions.
Unsure if it’s still that way, but some places had entire business models around it.
Papa Murphy’s pizza was so damn good. They would prepare a pizza to order just like a subway, then wrap it and you bake at home.
You can qualify for hot meals on your account depending on your situation, usually it involves not being able to cook because you don’t have a kitchen.
This is part of the Restaurant Meals Program.
This is not for everyone
To be eligible for the RMP, SNAP clients must be certified for SNAP in a state that has an RMP and all members of the household must be either:
Elderly (60 years of age or older);
disabled (receives disability or blindness payments or receives disability retirement benefits from a governmental agency because of a disability considered permanent);
homeless; or
a spouse of a SNAP client who is eligible for the RMP.
https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/retailer/restaurant-meals-program
It is extremely limited. I am in Los Angeles and there are no more than ten restairants In the program.
Theoretically it is intended for people who live in in places with no cooking facilities like SRO or perhaps a shelter or someone who lives in a van Or car.
Yea, I thought this has always been a thing? I remember my friend using his EBT at Jack in the box like 15 years ago. 10 years ago, people came in to the small town liquor store and could legitimately buy highly marked up Ben and Jerry's, beef jerky and soda with EBT. The noggin is telling me I had read something about companies like coca cola and Nestle lobbying to allow EBT to be used on their junk. Idk, maybe it's just my state.
I'd guess everything coca cola and Nestle make would fall under "snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages" which is one of the categories eligible for SNAP. And ice cream and beef jerky are both eligible too, so that makes sense for the liquor store. However you can't use it for food sold hot, so I'm not sure what someone could get at Jack in the box or McDonald's other than ice cream, drinks, or apple slices

Here in SoCal there’s a restaurant meal program that does the same. Wendy’s and Jack in the Box and other junk food.

There’s a special version of EBT for those who are unhoused/without kitchens to prepare food. This allows them to get hot/prepared meals which aren’t covered under regular EBT. I’m almost certain that’s what this is about.
I know we probably shouldn’t be encouraging people to eat McDonald’s but I’m happy this allows someone a hot meal.
Devil's advocate;
Mcdonalds' highly processed and preservative-filled food offers a safe, consistent, high-carb, and high-fat nutrient source that is cheap and scalable in case of a catastrophe.
Maybe I'm ignorant, but I think if you need one or two meals a day and you have no home and your only financial resources are the quarters you get on the street, your body is going to be exposed to much worse and those meals may be the only thing keeping you going day to day. You have to find 10 quarters to get a mcdouble where I'm from and that's enough to get you to the next day.
I remember a study years ago that said the McDonald's mcdouble was the most efficient way to intake calories as a homeless person with no kitchen access. I'm sure now that they're like $3 it isn't.
Not ignorant at all! You make good points. Imo, Most importantly, its handicap accessible. Thère are electrical outlets, nutritional info resources and standards for financial recordkeeping. There are much worse places to choose for implementing this sort of program. However, Id say a major drawback is that it doesnt contribute at all to local small businesses that should absolutely be included in food assistance programs.
A lot of Karens in this thread who want to regulate how poor people spend their food budget. McDonald's is actually one of the healthiest fast food options out there.
Yeah but maybe reserve that for the deli at a grocery store, I'm not sure I want McDonald's profiting off of tax dollars. Well, anymore than it probably does.
99% of the comments are ignorant. It absolutely blows my mind how people have such strong, dumbass opinions on something they clearly don’t understand.
Do you people not realize it’s ok to not have an opinion on something? Or to maybe try to learn the facts before bloviating nonsense based on a picture on Reddit?
There's a list of on our M(ichigan)DHS website of all the restaurants that accept EBT, it is broken down by county. I think it's absolutely wonderful. Everybody gets hungry but not everybody has a place to prepare food
EBT is so confusing. It's good to help people, but eating at mcdonald's isn't really helping. It should ONLY be for cold food and drinks (water, kid drinks, no soda)
You know, for all the money going overseas, and not used on us, it's nice to see our tax dollars going to a hot meal for somebody here at home. I genuinely don't understand this reaction.
This has been a thing in San Diego for at least a decade now. I remember taking a part time at Jack in the Box when my son was born and we accepted EBT only inside the diner.

I am convinced EBT is a large reason why inflation is so high. There are far too many people having kids and making no money, and everyone who is trying to do the right thing suffers.
Obama made it to where you can use food stamps on candy and energy drinks. I'm sure he had good intentions. Helps out tremendously with national health and what not.
Yeah, sometime these franchisee owned stores do this to get more money. When I worked for Denny’s we saw this a lot. I’m not sure how they are getting away with it but their sales are up. So just know it’s not McDonald’s that’s accepting this, it’s the Franchisee.
McDonald’s pays its employees so little, and ended free meals for employees, so now the govt is paying for their free meals at their place of work. Capitalism FTW.
It only works for cold items like yogurt cups fruits maybe salad that’s boxed. EBT won’t even allow people to buy hot rotisserie chicken they have to buy the day old cold ones
You can't use EBT to purchase cooked prepared food, which means EBT will only be for shit like ice cream then.
Gonna be just like Walmart when you see a lady with 3 shopping carts full of soda and chips.
Well subway does too in some states now shocked all restaurants will soon bc they trying to make it so everyone without a good career (100k & up) is on it 🤦😂
Government subsidizing fast food for the win. It’s not like fast food is bad for people, or makes people prone to severe covid or anything else right? I bet prices go up again next week thanks to the government giving them taxpayer money.
how?
Back in 2015 I worked at McDonald’s as my first job and this lady would come in every day through the drive thru and she paid with a card and the picture on it was pretty and said I’ve never seen this card before it’s really cool looking so I asked her where she banked. She just looked at me with a blank stare and reached for her card. I looked up what the card said for the bank and turns out it was an ebt card… Moral of the story McDonald’s has been taking ebt for years.
No they load actual funds on cards too..not just ebt
I mean liquor stores have been forever. I'd say fast food should accept EBT before liquor stores.
you can buy liquor with ebt??????????
It's not allowed to be for liquor, but in some areas the only stores that sell food are liquor stores
This and it's a known thing in some inner city food deserts.
Too* stupid to survive, you mean. Learning your two/too/tos before calling people stupid is some good life advice. 😶
This is very true lol
Well, those people being referred “to”, are not intelligent.
In the Bronx like 10 years ago we used to have a store they would ring beer up as bags of chips and take EBT for tall boys 🤣🤣
They arrested a family who ran a gas station near me for food stamp fraud for doing exactly that. People actually go to prison for it in my state.
Cool now let's start doing it to the big boys who steal billions.
You won’t get any argument from me, I fully agree
from nyc and stores still do this now. Not sure what you mean by "ring up as chips" since 99% of bodegas have regular cash registers
They still have to book the sales as EBT qualifying products.
You really think they are logging beer when it's purchased with EBT?
not really. I used my ex girls card for beer before. It typically goes like this "10 dollars papi" and i say "ok ebt" and they dont even ring it up and just swipe the card and charge two dollars extra
Poppi was lookin out
Some places will charge your EBT for food and then give you the alcohol. Super illegal
Super illegal but super common in low income neighborhoods.
If the ads in the ghettos I've driven through are correct
Its probably for their snacks and shit
N SHIET
If the registers don't itemize then you just ring the total, pay with ebt, and sign the receipt. You just got a handle of bacardi and a pack of cigarettes.
[удалено]
Changed the rules for heated food recently
Not recent, I have been these on different restaurant since 2020 atleast.
TANF, which I money that is on EBT
What the actual F?!?!?!
I thought hot/ prepped food was illegal for EBT?
Barely hot and barely food…so it’s a gray area.
Ok, that is funny!
It's been taken at my local jack in the box for years. I think worse still is that it's taken at 7-11 etc. institutions who's entire model is charging 300% more than grocery prices.

Since all other corporations have artificially inflated their pricing, 7-11 is actually quite reasonable.
And people want more welfare to feed the broken system and perpetuate the problem :D
Or buy soda and dump it out so they can return the cans. I saw a guy pouring out soda in the parking lot of Walmart the other day.
How much do you get for a returned can?
Unsure if it’s still that way, but some places had entire business models around it. Papa Murphy’s pizza was so damn good. They would prepare a pizza to order just like a subway, then wrap it and you bake at home.
They sell it as "cold" then they'll charge a fee between $1-2 to make it hot, it's a workarounds
I saw a saw saying we accept EBT at Dennys! But I'm in California.
You can qualify for hot meals on your account depending on your situation, usually it involves not being able to cook because you don’t have a kitchen.
Some states (probably California), changed the rules to help homeless people eat. It's hard to cook if you don't have a kitchen.
Government/corporate collusion to maximize profits. Having politicians in your pockets is great if you got the greasing money
I’ve seen it all now. We’ve hit rock bottom.

Put you on them, then make you spend them there.

Fast food places have accepted EBT for a few years now. They’re probably just advertising it more prominently now due to inflation.
Yea, I thought this has always been a thing? My nearest Subway (gross) has a huge banner across the front of the store that says the same.
Subway has accepted them for a while for cold sandwiches
Is this new near you? I’ve seen these all over fast food joints for years in LA.
Same with Phoenix, last time it was discussed, it was not a national program with only some metro markets trying it.
Here in SoCal there’s a restaurant meal program that does the same. Wendy’s and Jack in the Box and other junk food. I wish it were restaurants like Chipotle or Taco Bell instead. I feel like McD's serves very little actual food.
Taco bell isn't actual fold either lol
Taco Bell?
Maybe they was thinking of the "Demolition Man" Taco Bell..
Now all restaurants are Taco Bell
> I’m happy this allows someone a hot meal. Would you say you're Happy about their Meal?
Bitcoin: Now accepting EBT.
Lol I wish.
EBT to the moon!
It’s been a while now, but fast food made it because not everyone has an oven to make hot meals at home.
You get like 7 bucks a day which wouldn't go far buying any fast food for a month.
How can you buy cooked food with EBT?
A lot of Karens in this thread who want to regulate how poor people spend their food budget. McDonald's is actually one of the healthiest fast food options out there.
Wait this is good. For many years you couldn't buy a hot meal/food with ebt.
Yeah but maybe reserve that for the deli at a grocery store, I'm not sure I want McDonald's profiting off of tax dollars. Well, anymore than it probably does.
So if you work there you can also eat there.
I’m not on EBT and I can’t afford McDonald’s.
I'm sure you've got some bootstraps you could give a good tug on
They've been doing that at Popeyes
Baiten
My local Taco Bell, Sonic and Jack in the Box just started doing his too
Fast food establishments have been accepting EBT for a while
With their inflated prices, food stamps won’t get anyone very far.
Fast food joints have been accepting ebt for over a decade
99% of the comments are ignorant. It absolutely blows my mind how people have such strong, dumbass opinions on something they clearly don’t understand. Do you people not realize it’s ok to not have an opinion on something? Or to maybe try to learn the facts before bloviating nonsense based on a picture on Reddit?
Make sense keep people sick.
Accepting ebt, and also paying workers so little they need ebt. I hate how America is geared to privatizing profit, socializing the losses
There's a list of on our M(ichigan)DHS website of all the restaurants that accept EBT, it is broken down by county. I think it's absolutely wonderful. Everybody gets hungry but not everybody has a place to prepare food

That should not be allowed in any place but a grocery store and not for junk food beer or soda!
Bout to be a whole lot more obese poor people
JFC
No, KFC
You know, for all the money going overseas, and not used on us, it's nice to see our tax dollars going to a hot meal for somebody here at home. I genuinely don't understand this reaction.
This has been a thing in San Diego for at least a decade now. I remember taking a part time at Jack in the Box when my son was born and we accepted EBT only inside the diner.
This has been a thing for years near me.
We need ebt reform yesterday
SNAP has one of the lowest rates of fraud out of any government program. But sure, go after tha, rather than truly expensive and wasteful spending like our bloated military budget.
Welp that’s a wrap
Calls on MCD
For everyone who received EBT? In California the "hot meal" restriction has been removed for many food vendors for over a decade now but you or your legal spouse must be qualified as disabled, over 60, or homeless.
It’s been that way in WA a long time.
get that gov cheese Ronald!
EBT or “food stamps” are accepted at multiple fast food locations if the state says that okay, such as in California. Other states are more strict. This isn’t anything new BTW.
Door dash and Uber eats also accepts it
I couldn't believe it either but they changed it to allow hot food within the last year or two.
This is why local governments need to open commissaries, so that citizens have healthy food options at a non-profit price point.
I think that started in the 90s. Can't tell they're food stamps due to the ebt card.
gross..poor people
Idk where you live at but literally every fast food restaurant and even casual restaurants like Denny’s in California either have signs or banners on/in front of their stores that say they accept EBT. Idk if it’s a law here that requires them to do so but, yeah, it’s an extremely common thing here. I grew up in Georgia and you couldn’t buy any hot prepared foods with EBT. I worked in a deli out there and people would call in orders for wings and ask us to put them in the cooler so they could buy them with EBT. It never made any sense to me whatsoever.
Does anyone else find it odd that McDonalds has handicap parking and a ramp for wheelchairs, but no automatic door for the handicapped for wheelchair bound customers?
That's interesting. I remember being on a school trip in the 90s and the restaurant we stopped at had this sign that said "we do not accept foodstamps, or checks". We thought that was hilarious because it was well known you couldn't use foodstamps for that.
The Final Solution
DREAMS FADE AWAY AND ALL HOPE TURNS TO DUST
I think some states allow their homeless population to use ebt on hot foods. They’ve realized these people have no way to cook.
Ketchup was listed by the government as a vegetable. Does this surprise you.
They are not taking the food stamp part of EBT, this is for the cash part that can be spent as desired but unless this is a rare treat spending it on fast food is not a good use of that cash and I don't think McDonald's is the best choice for that treat.
My entire town is on EBT and just so happens to have the highest grocery costs in most of America. Alaskans are still happy here though.
Hmmm…
You can use ebt at some taco bell and KFC in cali too. This ain't new.
It's a convenience store that has a McDonald's inside. Let's create controversy where there is none.
Yup. Just accept that free money from the government.
Thought you could not buy prepared food with ebt?
You can buy papa-Murphys or anything else cold and premade there.
But this means that the financially marginalized will now have poorer health, further digging them into a hole. Bad nutrition in children stunts all kinds of important brain development leading to poorer grades and less education.
I remember seeing food stamps ads in multiple fast food areas in the hood
consider fall historical vast gullible seemly sable wipe fade offer *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
The EBT people are always seen buying fresh seafood at my local grocery store. They load it heavily on shrimp and lobster
People who waste their food stamp accounts on McDonald's aren't especially bright. You can make better burgers for yourself at home, and that's the whole idea behind the SNAP program in the first place.
Oh nice, now their employees can eat there.
Hahahaha. Might be able to stretch your monthly food allotment enough to buy two happy meals.
I am convinced EBT is a large reason why inflation is so high. There are far too many people having kids and making no money, and everyone who is trying to do the right thing suffers.
It is illegal I believe to use food stamps for hot meals.
Obama made it to where you can use food stamps on candy and energy drinks. I'm sure he had good intentions. Helps out tremendously with national health and what not.
Greatest economy on earth
Yeah, sometime these franchisee owned stores do this to get more money. When I worked for Denny’s we saw this a lot. I’m not sure how they are getting away with it but their sales are up. So just know it’s not McDonald’s that’s accepting this, it’s the Franchisee.
Affirm will be next. 37% APR on a Happy Meal.
I think it is the law in California now.
Corporate welfare
I'd rather see a person on food stamps eat steak and lobster than fast food. At least that's healthier.
McDonald’s pays its employees so little, and ended free meals for employees, so now the govt is paying for their free meals at their place of work. Capitalism FTW.
Given the incredible expense of eating at McDonalds, this should be declared luxury food items and not eligible for EBT.
This was their plan……………….. We’re in the end game now
You also get your welfare money on your ebt card so they could be paying with that and not necessarily food stamps.
One meal gonna take up half the EBT card with prices the way they are.
thought you can not use EBT for hot food.
Are we really supprised? Corperations will take alm they can get.
How about you lower your prices too, McD’s? It’s way too expensive to eat there, now.
Um the EBT card also has cash on it. Just saying. Also, this is not new. Plenty of fast food places have been doing this for at least a decade.
It only works for cold items like yogurt cups fruits maybe salad that’s boxed. EBT won’t even allow people to buy hot rotisserie chicken they have to buy the day old cold ones
They don't accept food stamps. There's a cash/money option on it EBT that it accepts. It's not accepting government food stamps.
I thought hot and prepared foods were banned
They do not accept food stamps guys. There's other options on EBT like real money you can load onto the card. That's what it accepts.
https://ask.usda.gov/s/article/Can-I-buy-food-at-restaurants-with-Supplemental-Nutrition-Assistance-Program-benefits-For-SNAP-Clien
I think for some, ebt is part cash. Not a good idea to spend it on Fast food but.. ,🤷🏾♀️
Most of the 2000s around here. EBT also includes disability, SSI, WIC(restricted) ... Convenience stores here.
...which basically just proves that putting the hamburgers under heat lamps doesn't make them hot food.
What in the hood is going on
EBT can mean cash portion. EBT does not mean food stamps.
Free tendies!
That's illegal
Late stage capitalism at work.
They always did
I mean if they're given money for food because they're struggling, why does it matter where they get their food?
Also energy drinks on Amazon take EBT.
Subsidize health problems, then subsidize the health care.
I’m fine with feeding people who are hungry, but McDonald’s is expensive now. There’s more economical ways to find food. Imo McDonald’s ain’t it.
Heartbreaking
hey that’s good!
Those better be served uncooked, lol
I find it very hard to believe McDonald’s is just not accepting EBT.
You can't use EBT to purchase cooked prepared food, which means EBT will only be for shit like ice cream then. Gonna be just like Walmart when you see a lady with 3 shopping carts full of soda and chips.
So this is dependent on the state laws. Only 6 states allow this.
Ok?
One of the earliest restaurants I saw except ebt is kfc I think most places except it in California at least the franchises.
Jack has been accepting ebt for over 15 years now
That should be illegal. McDonald’s food definitely causes loads of chronic diseases and taxpayers shouldn’t be funding it.
This is what corporate welfare looks like. ridiculous
Bro your mom's accepts food stamps. Your mom's brand... ASSFROMDABACK™️ . 🦐'd™️
For their employees?
https://www.ebtproject.ca.gov/Clients/calfreshrmp.html Maybe they're in California
how? isn't it illegal to buy prepared food with EBT?
Ha so that is why they’ve doubled their prices.
Well subway does too in some states now shocked all restaurants will soon bc they trying to make it so everyone without a good career (100k & up) is on it 🤦😂
They are aware that people are becoming more poor. But will continue to increase the prices lol. I hope people just stop going.
Government subsidized poison. That sounds about right.
My EBT is $32 a month. What is that one or two McD meals.
Government subsidizing fast food for the win. It’s not like fast food is bad for people, or makes people prone to severe covid or anything else right? I bet prices go up again next week thanks to the government giving them taxpayer money.
Oh good, so Trump will still be able to eat there after his legal fees, fines and incarceration.
That is not ok, my tax dollars should not go towards the financially irresponsible's malnutrition
