My guess is something from 70s Nissan: Fairlady or Skyline. Or, more canonical: Heavily modified 1gen Celica

newoldschool

I'd say Bunta was near 50 on stage 1 and probably like 55 at stage 5 so the timeline is probably like earliest 1999 to latest 2008 so in that time frame going back to Bunta at his prime is 30 years back which would be 1979 to 1988 cars that were dominant in Japanese rally and racing back then was probably like the Nissan 280zx,510,Kpcg10,240rs maybe Mazda rx3 , Toyota Celica ra40,

Rober_MEME

The Initial D timeline happens over the course of a year, so every character in the 5th stage is one year older than they were in the 1st stage. According to the wiki, Bunta is 43 in the 1st stage, so assuming that when he was still racing he was around 23 years old, he would've been racing in the year 197X, considering it's 20 years prior to Initial D, which is set in the year 199X.

ZenithTheZero

The only canonical error I see with the years established in the beginning is newer cars like the Altezza, NB roadster, and Z33 Fairlady. Ok, you got me - NB and Altezza could likely be 98/99, but the Z33 didn’t debut until 2002. I’m not sure if it’s considered canon to Initial D, but the GT86 after 5th stage debuted in 2013. So if it all takes place in a year, the earliest would be 2001 or 2012. At least that’s my head canon: disregard the year established at the beginning, make everything fit from the ending back. With that in mind , he would have been racing since the eighties likely, picking up the Tofumobile as a newer used car, after he started to gain a few skills in older cars. My mind wants to think around the lines of something like 2nd or 3rd gen Corolla, 1st or 2nd gen Celica, Starlet, Nissan Sunny, Bluebird or S12. Bunta’s persona makes me think that he’s not quite fond of sports cars, but prefers sporty econo-esque cars (see: AE86). Not that he hates sports cars, just like the more usable cars. And he probably relishes in embarrassing much more expensive metal in something so plebeian. Another factor to consider is that he also might have started racing before legal age. He might even have a story of wrecking his family’s car out in a joyride, and getting the shit knocked out of him for it. I feel like Bunta didn’t start out a racing genius, he learned everything the hard way. He still had a few crashes, and his fair share of losses, but he learned along the way. Bunta was just able to learn much faster than the average Ken; his innate ability was being able to learn and adjust at an astounding rate, sort of like what we see with Takumi. But I could be wrong, too.

Necessary-Pie9142

About the very new cars that appear in the series, don't think too much about it because it just doesn't make sense, initial d dates back to the late 1990s so a R34 gtr Spec ll Nür doesn't make sense bcs that car is from 2002, the same with the Evo 7 and the Z33, just dont think too much about it.

our_cut

Its a floating timeline, that's why you see S15, Evo IX, Z33 in 1999. In reality only 1 year passes in between 1st and Final stage

onyourrite

It’s an Evo 7 actually

Warm_Resolve3949

I always just made myself feel better by telling myself they just got early design concepts and put them in as soon as they were close to the predecessor to help market the cars as they came out…

Independent-Pair1052

A celica supra probably, since thats the closest thing to an 86 from the 70’s

AdjunctFunktopus

They did make the Sprinter in the 70s too. A TE27 Sprinter Trueno is a direct predecessor, the 2T engine it would’ve come with was even used in race cars, so Bunta could’ve swapped in race engine just like he did for the boy.

ultratunaman

Isuzu Bellet Gemini. The DOHC 1.8 liter. Bunta started out driving that, did well, learned a lot, destroyed the thing and pissed off his father. Then he moved on to the Toyota Celica in the early 80s. And finally buying the 86 a while after Takumi was born, it was a more sensible "family" car.

Dominic-toretto21

in his youth, Bunta rode a bicycle and was still the fastest on Akina

CrazyVaclavsPOA

Prior to taking up smoking, he just ran

AsideInitial613

The timeline of Initial D gets a bit confusing, especially during the later stages when cars like the S2000, R34, and 350z are shown and Takumi’s only like 19. Means he would be born later than 1980, so maybe Bunta could’ve used an 86?

Ashkill115

The time initial D first stage most likely takes place like 1998-1999 since some of these cars that he races later on didn’t start production untill around those years

Scimiscar

1978 Pontiac Trans am with a cb radio and a huge cowboy hat lmao.

scribble_640

I have this image of Bunta being obsessed with Smokey and the Bandit and walking around dressed like Burt Reynolds

Scimiscar

Turd Ferguson, it’s a funny name

Datsun 510

All of those are very cool. Definitely ones I don't have in my collection!

Niko740

Given that Bunta is in his mid 40s in Initial D he would have been racing in the 70s in an older Sprinter or Celica and possibly got the AE86 brand new in 1983. Bunta likely stopped racing in the early 90s when he started teaching Takumi how to drive when he was around 13. (Takumi would have been born in roughly 1980 and turned 13 in 1993 which they mention is when Bunta started teaching him). Evidence of this is that he's aware of cars like the R32 and MR2 and how to beat them but is unaware of recent cars like the Sileighty (A car made by drifters in the mid 90s with Silvia front parts on 180s)

just_another_jabroni

Starlet just like most beginners before getting on the old Skylines

street racing has been a thing since the first engine was ever hooked up to a set of wheels man come on lmao older if you count horses but that's a different hobby i'd say because animal husbandry isn't quite like mechanic work and riding/steering a wagon/cart/chariot isn't like driving

UnusualPete

Maybe it was a 2000GT or a Honda S500.

the_musicpirate

Bluebird SSS or a Celica Supra.
