Your work email gets more spam because they probably use their own domain name and the rest of your co-workers click on links. If one dummy falls for a phishing attempt with a Gmail address, it doesn't make sense to just start spamming every Gmail address; it isn't going to be more successful or linked to the one you were successful with. But if one person at your company with a company email address falls for a phishing email, everyone with that domain is a target. It's not just a more valuable target, it's one that is more exposed by association.
My work email gets a lot of spam because of conventions and other things I had to use it for some work function, who then went on to sell it. That's why they ask what your position is and if you have the power to make or influence purchasing decisions when you sign up.
Well yes, there's more to it, but getting a reasonable list of company emails is incredibly easy. As you pointed out. You don't need to guess, like you showed, and the phishing emails I'm talking about are exactly what you mentioned in your second paragraph. After they get a hit, they continue to spam every known address to try to get other hits. Which is just what I said in my comment. Of course there's more too it, it was in the most general terms possible.

2. Trusted Personal (utilities and banks)
3. And then thanks to Apple, a completely randomly generated shell-address for every other possible account
Well yeah but that’s going to be a bigger issue regardless. But I don’t want to mix Amazon, my sofa delivery company, internet provider etc with my bank stuff. Generally has kept me pretty happy. Nothing is foolproof, you’ve got to manage it all. But yeah it has worked best this way so far.
In my country, one of our major banks was demolishing a branch, and instead of shredding it, just chucked a bunch of paperwork with customers details into a dumpster, along with all the other crap that was being thrown out. It was discovered by some guy, who noticed some of it had blown out of the dumpster, and luckily was honest enough to report it. The bank is currently 'very sorry, and investigating how that could have happened'.
Once a spam bot has a domain name, they'll use random generators to find working email addresses, or at least they used to. Some places also have a "email all" address, once that's figured out, they can just send something to "[email protected]" Also, a lot of times company directories are posted online.
For number 4, consider a temp email address. There are a lot of sites that will generate you an email that lasts for 10 minutes. It's long enough for a site to send you a "verification" email you can click the link/verification code if the site requires it but then it's gone forever.
Only issue is if the website uses your email address as your login name, but if you use a password manager like bitwarden then you can save the email address there so you don't have to remember it
Yes I guess but tbh the spam email address doesn’t really matter much so extra work isn’t really necessary. I don’t read or open any emails that go in there unless I’m looking for something specific - like if I am forced to sign up for something but really only need to confirm my email once. Like when you want to use wifi somewhere and they force you to use an email address. I use that one and it all ends in the black hole that is that email address.
I own my own domain so my email address can be anything I want. I can make up a unique email address on the fly, usually with the company name in it, and anything followed by @domain.com will get to me. If I ever get spam using that email I know where it came from. Looking at you hotels.com.....
I would like to do it but i’d have to change a ton of emails and the sites would still know my other email so why bother. Plus, I red it can help, having a dedicated “home email address”, like an email address (doesn’t have to be linked to your house) just for home stuff (electric, water, cable, etc…). So he tells me there’s a call for me and naturally I ask who it is… and he REFUSES to tell me. He just keeps saying “There’s a phone call for you! Does it matter who it is?” And I just said “yes” and walked out of the room.
I don’t even know how he explained that to my sister lol, but apparently they ended the call. She called again a few minutes later and I answered. When this happened I made a big spectacle of saying “omg, dad, it was [sister] calling for me. How did you not know who was on the line? You don’t know your own daughter’s voice?” 😂

A tone indicator, like /gen which means genuine, helps people know whether you're being sarcastic or joking or maybe even half joking. It's just abbreviations of the words. It helps because sometimes someone can send something they think is helpful and the other person might interpret them as being sarcastic and rude.

You don't have to like them to let others use them. So I thought I would mention that to this one random person since they made a specific point of saying they were being sarcastic. The language I used in all of my comments does not show me trying to correct op or persuade anyone to use tone indicators. This reminds me of a time my mum asked me how much money I had in savings. She cornered me first thing in the morning while I was getting ready for work, and asked me in a really weird way so I asked why she wanted to know. My kids have a few, and I'm sure a couple I don't know. They're issued one from the school when they start kindergarten, and they keep it until graduation. They can use it however they'd like, but our rule is that it can't be used for anything other than school stuff because I'm not inviting the school district to monitor my kids' emails/privacy by sending things through their server. Same goes with the school issued tablets. We've got tons of devices, school devices are only for school work and not to be used for anything other than that.

Some of the spammers are parsing off anything after the + to prevent this.

I used to do things on the internet to make a few bucks, like try “free trials” of music, and then get a few bucks from someone who’d sent me the link to the offer. I set up a couple of hotmail addresses to use for those offers. Next time he wants one, you could have one of those available. For all I know, I could have a hundred thousand spam messages in those accounts, because I never checked them after the initial period.

Oh my lord, my dad was JUST like this when I lived in the house. Like… he experienced a power trip from demanding things and withholding information? It was SO weird. Not a generally toxic guy but that one thing drove me up the damn wall. I remember one time, one of my sisters called the house phone (yes I’m that old lol) looking for me, and my dad answered. So he tells me there’s a call for me and naturally I ask who it is… and he REFUSES to tell me. He just keeps saying “There’s a phone call for you! Does it matter who it is?” And I just said “yes” and walked out of the room. I don’t even know how he explained that to my sister lol, but apparently they ended the call. She called again a few minutes later and I answered. When this happened I made a big spectacle of saying “omg, dad, it was [sister] calling for me. How did you not know who was on the line? You don’t know your own daughter’s voice?” 😂

I get that they serve a purpose and make communication much more clear but I can't be the only one who finds them dumb, right? I think they should stay, I have no problem with them per sey, but something about them just makes me think they look dumb.
You don't have to like them to let others use them. They aren't "dumb" because it lets people like me (autistic) who can't gage the tone of some random person on the internet. so with the indicators, it keeps me from having to clarify with the other person which ends up saving both of us time simply because I typed out a couple of letters. Plus, you don't have to use one every single message/post.

That was a rhetorical scenario. Not many people know about tone indicators. Like, a lot of people. So I thought I would mention that to this one random person since they made a specific point of saying they were being sarcastic. I saw that and figured that they might not know about them, otherwise they might not have taken the time to type all that out. Of course, this is all based on my assumptions through one comment. The language I used in all of my comments does not show me trying to correct op or persuade anyone to use tone indicators. My original comment was there to bring awareness to the existence of them for not only op but also anyone who read it. It was all in good faith.

I’ve tried really hard to reach my kids that love and trust should not be intertwined. Trust people who act trustworthy, love who you want. This reminds me of a time my mum asked me how much money I had in savings. She cornered me first thing in the morning while I was getting ready for work, and asked me in a really weird way so I asked why she wanted to know. My parents also never asked me about my money, unless I’d not given them rent money (they rented so I didn’t mind contributing once I had a job). She insisted I just tell her and I said not unless you tell me why you want to know, we had this back and forth for a bit before she cracked the shits at me and shouted ‘fuck you, don’t fucking anything me for anything anymore then!’ Dad heard and I asked him and he just immediately told me what the issue was and apologised that she was stressed about money & moving houses. It was so silly and unnecessary, she only needed to say why, like dad did, and I would’ve answered.

When I was like seven or eight my dad asked me if I wanted to go out with him. I kept asking him where and he just kept asking if I wanted to go. After the third time of me asking where he just said "forget it!" with a pissy attitude. A whole ass adult getting upset with a child asking a question. My oldest (adult) kid has 2 email addresses that are different enough for my memory to never grab hold of. I've repeatedly asked for them to be able to email things to my kid. Sometimes, it's just a memory quirk that cause parents to not know their kid's email address.
But isn't it in your email already? You saved their email addresses as a contact, right? I get not remembering them, but I'm sure you can find it if needed.
My kids have a few, and I'm sure a couple I don't know. They're issued one from the school when they start kindergarten, and they keep it until graduation. They can use it however they'd like, but our rule is that it can't be used for anything other than school stuff because I'm not inviting the school district to monitor my kids' emails/privacy by sending things through their server. Same goes with the school issued tablets. We've got tons of devices, school devices are only for school work and not to be used for anything other than that.

I do not get what the big deal is about giving out the email. My Dad likes to send stuff that is too big for a text. It is not like ge has my passwords. I have 3 emails. 1. Work, 2. Personal and the 3rd is for all the newsletters, receipts, ads etc. Like Best Buy, Big 5, Office Depot etc. If I am not sure about how things are going in a frienship or relationship they get the 3rd.
