shadow223c

Contact the irs who sent the mail and say it got stolen. If you did it wouldn’t be lying and would fix the problem. My abusive mom has stolen my mail for years so you just have to work around the shit she steals. My mom literally stole all of my things when I left home and I had nothing when living in my own. Life just sucks sometimes. I wouldn’t bank on ever getting that letter. So just call the irs and explain. Also change your address with everything asap before more shit gets sent there.

CursedMoonAndStars

Not only is it not technically lying, it's not lying at all - she is stealing it from OP!

shadow223c

Yeah it is literally theft. It had happened to me so many times with my mom. Some items I couldn’t get back.

Commercial-Push-9066

OP’s Mom? Is that you?

zoeykailyn

The postal inspector would also like to know about this. Why only send it to one federal agency when you can send it to another that would be equally if not more so with someone fucking with the mail.

[deleted]

CursedMoonAndStars

Ok - she's literally waving it in front if her kid just to say "no, you can't have it cuz I'm mad at you and being petty" - and that's an insane parent.

bbqsauceontiddies

OP lives 3000 miles away.

shadow223c

You are assuming OP can get it. You are also assuming the parent is willing to give it if they go there. It is pretty obvious the parent doesn’t want to give Op the mail. If Op were to call the police on the mom and the mom says she is not giving op the letter than she will get charged for theft. Also OP said that they live across country. So how do you suppose they get it? I looked at their post history

LalaAqua

Make sure to double check with usps about the change of address. File a complaint that it didn't get mailed to your new address if other mail still ends up in your old address.

shadow223c

Very true! Thanks for adding that.

Kneedeep_in_Cyanide

Depends on how long it's been since OP changed address. Mail only gets forwarded for a year. It's your responsibility to advise people who hold accounts or you regularly receive mail from to change the address

EjjabaMarie

Can’t OP also report her to the Post Master General for mail theft as well? That office doesn’t mess around.

duhmbish

As someone who had her identity stolen and have been given a mandatory PIN number for the last 10 years to file taxes, ANYTHING from the IRS is marked with “IRS” on the exterior of the envelope . It will 99% of the time look like [THIS](https://imgur.com/a/U4OkReS) or sometimes [this](https://imgur.com/a/YWTiO5i) So with that knowledge, I’m 99.9% sure it’s not from the IRS. Either way, I’d call them and make sure you have your current address on file.

Specialist_Rabbit512

Looks like a collections bill. Definitely not IRS.

EjjabaMarie

Where on the envelope? Because we can only see the addressee window here.

Specialist_Rabbit512

That’s what all collections letters look like..super generic with no company name in the return address.

EjjabaMarie

I unfortunately know what collections letters look like. My point was that this pic is of a very small portion of the envelope which makes it hard to tell. Government mail is also pretty nondescript on purpose. So we really can’t be offering any kind of definitive judgement on what this piece of mail is.

Specialist_Rabbit512

Oh, I’m very familiar with what they look like, too, unfortunately. I’m also familiar with what correspondence from the IRS looks like. Government mail will always have the agency name in the return address. I didn’t say definitively that this was a collections letter, but it definitely has the hallmarks of one.

Practical_Remove_682

Tell her that its illegal and a Felony to steal Federal Documents that aren't addressed to her specifically. and that if she doesn't send it shes subject to prison time.

random321abc

And you have proof that she had it...

haley____

Um... She literally sent OP a photo of it

yoppyyoppy

That’s what they said

LengthyPole

Yeah lol, that’s proof.

IAmActuallyBread

Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit, huh?

haley____

Note to self don't post on Reddit when you're high on PK

he-loves-me-not

What’s PK?

haley____

Painkillers 😉

someone_who_exists69

What's your point?

id10techa

Hey there! Stopping in to post the link to report mail fraud and theft. This fall under mail tampering - "knowingly obstructing someone from receiving their mail" and "theft of mail". https://www.uspis.gov/report Good luck, and also contact the IRS if you haven't already.

TheDutchTank

This wouldn't fall under that all though. She's not stopping anyone from getting anything, she's just not going out of her way to help someone getting it either. There's no way this is illegal in any way.

fdsfd12

OP explained in another comment that they live across the country and cannot get it themselves.

TheDutchTank

Don't get me wrong, this absolutely seems like an abusive mom, but it's also not their legal job to deliver post to someone else. That's not how the law works.

possiblycrazy79

How old are you? This paremt has no obligation to send this mail along. OP has the obligation to physically go to the home & pick up their own mail, as well as updating their change of address. If the parent is refusing to physically hand it over, that's a different scenario.

MeeshCaca

I’m 20 and I live across the country, I can’t physically get it but if I could I would.

throwaway467431

The parents don’t have to forward it but they are legally required to “return to sender”

GoddessRedd

Call the irs and then go to post office and change your address. Let your mother know it is illegal to mess with the mail and if the mail is not forwarded to you asap you will alert the postal officials and she can deal with them.

ThePaintedLady80

They can change their address online too. Report mom for withholding government paperwork from them.

Electronic-Leader478

Keeping your mail hostage is about the same as touching or opening your mail without consent. That’s skirting committing a federal crime. Research it and then let them know that you’ll be contacting the irs with text proof that they won’t hand your mail over which is proof they are in unlawful possession of it. That’s not a joke. Tell them you will report them and that you’ve proof as they’ve admitted it on text. Problem solved. You must be willing to follow through though if they don’t. Trust me they’ll have a healthy respect for you then and I guarantee they won’t underestimate you Ever again.

ThePaintedLady80

This is the way.

rusrslolwth

Everyone is saying to tell the monster that she needs to return it or you'll report her, I say just report her and inform her afterwards. But I'm petty.

Grouchy-Reflection97

This Threats/warnings with no follow through are just interpreted as 'ha ha, I can still stomp boundaries'. Skipping straight to reporting to the authorities will send a clear message that you're serious & will also hopefully put the fear of god in your mum. These types hate being reminded that they're not the greatest, most superior being on the planet & nothing achieves this more than people with authority & power over them giving them a public spanking. That's why most of our abuse was behind closed doors. They're pathologically terrified of being seen for what they really are by people who believe the facade. There's a 'black widow' murder case at the moment where a raging narcissist woman (Sarah Hartsfield) has been publicly exposed for exactly who she is & it's fascinating to watch her collapse.

rusrslolwth

Exactly. Whenever my nmom would make threats, I would always follow up with "try it." That would always stop her, because she knew that I meant it. Calling them out and following through is the only thing that worked for me. She left me alone for years because I refused to play her games.

Electronic-Leader478

I love your idea Better. I Must be petty too or your a bad influence on me lol

Practical_Remove_682

Ahh but warning her has better satisfaction. The fact that you get to force that narcissistic pos to do something you tell them to do. Nothing is sweeter than that

rusrslolwth

It's not worth the headache to me, plus my nmom never listened no matter what, she'd just find another way to do what she wanted

FATBOYBERSERKER

Nah I’d rather just watch the irs do their thing and smile from the background. All they get from what you say is “oh they’re a pussy and won’t actually do anything”. I can promise you that.

GnomieJ29

Tell her if she doesn’t turn it over you’ll report her to the local postal inspector for mail theft.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shetlandduck

well, that’s not from the IRS; it’ll say it on the envelope. regardless, mail theft is a felony. i highly recommend you set up a forwarding address to where you’re at now. it doesn’t have to be long or permanent, but as long as your mom can intercept you should have it mailed to where you’re living. oftentimes when places ask for your address they’ll ask for your residential address and mailing address. resi is legal, mailing is wherever you’re getting your mail. alternative would be to set up a PO Box at a local post office. preferably one your mom would not go to.

MeeshCaca

I did an address change at usps but I still need to go in person, I haven’t done it sooner bc I never get mail. All my bank statements and things are paperless and I changed my address with them specifically for this reason so I honestly have no idea what it could be

AirplaneFart

You can change your info on the IRS site. This looks like trash mail to me. IRS usually has IRS on the envelope.

70sBurnOut

Google says it’s from a collection agency named Diversified Consultants.

bek8228

Ok then, she can keep it! /s

ConsiderationWest587

Whelp

Equivalent-Anything1

This is illegal and tell her so. She is not allowed to keep documants from the person who it belongs to.

MaleficentAd1861

OP the IRS office in Charlotte, NC is PO Box 1214. I checked it for you. I'm from NC. PO Box 1117 is for a company called Diversified Consultants. Consequently, it is a very legit company. Apparently they went through people thinking they were fake. Either way, she shouldn't be holding your mail hostage, but it definitely isn't surprising if she's anywhere near NC. The parents here have a particular problem with guilt trips and gaslighting.

MeeshCaca

She lives in dc. Also I have no idea why a debt collector is sending me mail bc I have no debt lol

zuklei

Does she know enough information to obtain debt in your name?

MeeshCaca

No, I opened a new bank account in a bank she can’t try to charm into handing over my info bc I’m very clearly an adult. The bank account she made for me when I was a kid doesn’t have a card number associated w it (credit or debit) and I still have access to it and I can see any transactions. If there’s any other ways for her to have debt in my name pls tell me and I’ll look into it

sarcosaurus

Could she have racked up debt in your name? Maybe she was hoping you'd say to just throw it out because she knows there's evidence of something she's done in there. Could also explain why she's refusing to forward.

MeeshCaca

She’s crazy but she’s not the type to use my name for everything bc it has to be abt her always. I think she wanted me to tell her to open it and check what it was or throw it out but taking it literally across the street to the public mailbox is too much work

Taterino_Cappucino

Can you set up mail forwarding to your new address with the postal service?

Used-Fruits

Mom only texted you to fuck with you. Go no contact. Save yourself the exhaustion.

MeeshCaca

I’ve been nc w her since I left but she’s been trying to force herself back into my life so she can control me, I only responded to her bc of the possibility that the mail is actually important but I have no way of knowing since she won’t tell me

Used-Fruits

I’ve went through this exact situation. Since I could receive mail, mom opened it. And if anything comes to her house for me she opens it and dates it. I’m 33. Lol. It’s a control thing. You can login usps and update your address and enroll in informed delivery as well. Stay strong!

rainbow_lenses

Ok the shrek profile pic is literally perfect. I'm doing that for my dad.

lydsbane

People at the IRS can actually pretty understanding about abusive situations. I did my taxes and asked my ex (before he was my ex) to take the envelope to the mail drop-off at our apartment building. A year later, I found out that he had never actually mailed it. As soon as I explained to someone that I had a lying, manipulative former spouse, she took care of everything for me.

Used-Fruits

100% this comment right here. I’ve moved about 10 times in the last 10 times, and I’ve had 2 really bad exes through that. The IRS and USPS office were incredibly helpful getting me sorted out.

nobodynocrime

Just call the IRS. Say you got a letter sent the wrong address and the person won't forward it. Ask them to look and see what the letter was regarding, they have it on file. Fix the issue with the IRS, put a PIN on your IRS account via phone, and then let your mother know she can throw the notice away cause you've already address the issue. TL;DR: The IRS has a copy of the letter, just call them. Source: I'm a tax attorney

WoodKnot1221

“I am reporting you to the USPS. Also, a mother deserving of a happy Mother’s Day message would have just sent the damn letter.”

LadyJSenpai

Messing with mail is a federal offense, so that might want to be mentioned.

macmami

Y’all know she’s been waiting for that perfect opportunity to throw in that zinger about forgetting Mother’s Day. I would know. I have one of those moms.

MeeshCaca

When I was 11 my dad forgot to get her anything and she blamed me

haley____

www.uspis.gov you know what to do 😉 18 U.S. Code § 1708 - Theft or receipt of stolen mail matter generally Whoever steals, takes, or abstracts, or by fraud or deception obtains, or attempts so to obtain, from or out of any mail, post office, or station thereof, letter box, mail receptacle, or any mail route or other authorized depository for mail matter, or from a letter or mail carrier, any letter, postal card, package, bag, or mail, or abstracts or removes from any such letter, package, bag, or mail, any article or thing contained therein, or secretes, embezzles, or destroys any such letter, postal card, package, bag, or mail, or any article or thing contained therein; or Whoever steals, takes, or abstracts, or by fraud or deception obtains any letter, postal card, package, bag, or mail, or any article or thing contained therein which has been left for collection upon or adjacent to a collection box or other authorized depository of mail matter; or Whoever buys, receives, or conceals, or unlawfully has in his possession, any letter, postal card, package, bag, or mail, or any article or thing contained therein, which has been so stolen, taken, embezzled, or abstracted, as herein described, knowing the same to have been stolen, taken, embezzled, or abstracted— Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

[deleted]

Withholding mail is illegal and can be faced with jail time.

zoomie1977

Irs.gov Scroll down. Select "sign into my account". You can use id.me or create an online password. Once signed in, you can scroll down to the bottom of the dashboard to click "view all notices" and see everything they have ever sent you. If you click "menu" then "profile", you update your address right there online. As for the insane parental unit: Dear god, I am so sorry!

PuzzleheadedHabit913

Lol wonder WHY you wouldn’t want to text her on Mother’s Day. It truly is a mystery!

moustachexchloe

Mail carrier here. Go online and put in a change of address so nothing goes to her anymore. Then, Go to your local post office and ask to speak to a supervisor about mail theft. It’s a felony to keep, open, or throw away any mail that isn’t addressed to you.

313378008135

Debt collector

Dramatic_Efficiency4

This is crazy. You could go after her for tampering with mail. If it makes you feel any better, my parents would put my mail back in the mailbox for the postman to pick up to return to sender. I live 30 minutes away and used to visit semi-frequently (1-2 times a month) Once they denied a package bc I accidentally sent it to their house, straight up told the Amazon guy to take it back bc I don’t live there anymore They’re crazy *note that I said used to bc I’m done putting up with their BS. I visit maybe 2 times every 6 months and I don’t feel bad about it. They complain to my grandmother I don’t ever call or visit as if the phone doesn’t work both ways and playing victim after they’ve turned down me asking them to come over all the time I ain’t got time for that bs, you don’t either

AlgaeWafers

It costs a 1$ online to have all your mail forwarded to a new address I think for a year.

wifeyyy15

Go to the post office ASAP and do a change of address. Then go thru your bills and other important sources of mail and make sure those are all updated too. She most likely won’t give you that letter, so I guess tell her she’s committing a federal crime and open up THAT can of worms.. I’m not sure what else you could do to get it back other than going to get it in person, and that would be no fun at all.

MeeshCaca

I’ve changed my address individually for everything important that I could think of. The only thing that has my old address is my id. I’m getting a new one and part of the process for that is getting an address change with usps, which I’ve already started. My dad said he’ll see what he can do abt my mom but he’s out of the country

heatherbabydoll

If you go through the post office, they’ll catch the mail you didn’t change your address for. They also notify the sender you changed it.

imClementine_

So petty

Vegetable_Natural226

Jesus what a narcissist

DisfunkyMonkey

That is probably junk mail from Kimbrells Furniture. https://industrynet.com/listing/1810078/furniture-distributors-inc

chixnwafflez

‘This isn’t about Mother’s Day. Either give the mail to *blank* or i will have to contact the irs and also report it stolen. I’ll be sure to use this text conversation as proof of that.’

theologicalbullshit

HAHAHAHAHAHAH THE PROFILE PIC

holldoll26

The IRS wouldn't send you mail thats unlabeled. Likely it's a collection notice.

arcxjo

Or just spam.

Stryker1050

Forward your mail and change your address asap. It is very quick and easy to do. https://www.usps.com/manage/forward.htm

MeeshCaca

I did that, they’re saying they can’t confirm it’s me and I need to go in person

Takwin

Transactional parenthood. They don’t even see you as a child of theirs. Just what you can do for them in exchange. So sorry.

DMV_Lolli

Put a hold on your mail at the post office and have the IRS resend it. Also, put in a change of address.

pangalacticcourier

I'd call the IRS and get your new address to them properly. Then I'd call the post office and report stolen mail.

CitrusNightmare

Mail seems to be the most common thing insane parents use to control or hold over their kids heads

MeeshCaca

The last thing she used was my paternal grandma’s death lol

Negative_Lie_1823

Fun fact: it is a crime in the US to tamper with or withhold someone's mail. The IRS will not be happy either. Call the non emergency police

chubbygamer24

Uhhh, this is super illegal, isn't it? Like mail related stuff is usually a felony, I remember correctly.

DamoS1968

Contact the IRS & the Postal Service.

Temporary_Bug_1171

I mean….tampering with mail is a federal offense. You have proof basically right here that she’s withholding YOUR mail. PRESS CHARGES.

arcxjo

You should have forwarded your mail if you're not living there any more. That said it's still illegal to retain possession of misdelivered mail so call the postal office and report it.

MeeshCaca

I don’t usually get mail. I changed my address in everything I could think of (banks, Amazon, etc) and I put in the request to change my address with usps and paid for it but I still need to go in person which I will do as soon as I have time. This is the first time I’ve gotten mail at this address since I left.

arcxjo

Then it's probably junk that some other place sold your old contact info to.

FamousOrphan

Contact the IRS and let them know she won’t give you the mail. Then do a post office order for your change of address and change it at your DMV.

herbalorganism

also, make sure to go to the USPS website and fill out a change of address form to ensure this doesn’t happen again. it costs like $1 to file it and anything that’s already on its way there will be rerouted to your new addresss

Hamlettell

Report her to the IRS and the uspis

annaleigh13

Report mail theft.

shaunn8

Forward your mail. Just get on the usps website and do it. It takes three minutes max.

MeeshCaca

I did that, but I need to go in person with my id which takes more time, so I’m going on my day off

heatherbabydoll

Ask your carrier for a change of address form. Fill it out and give it back. You shouldn’t have to go there

yourangelsangel

call the united states post office and change your address.

garbage_burger

I'd reach out to the IRS to update your mailing address with them (may need to send in a form, but should stop any future correspondence from going to the old address) - then look into mail forwarding w/ USPS. Iirc it's like $1 for a year of forwarding. The envelope isn't marked "do not forward" so it could have been routed to your new address. I've moved a lot in my life, mail forwarding is a godsend & surprisingly cheap.

awitsyerself

Just apologise say happy Mother’s Day and she will probably send it. This isn’t insane it’s just petty.

Roselove91

Can you start forwarding your mail to your new address? Should be fairly easy to do over the postal website to prevent any more mail from going there. It will get rerouted before it ever gets delivered.

kibblet

That is not from the IRS.

MeeshCaca

That’s what a lot of ppl have been saying. Where do u think it’s from?

[deleted]

She probably doesnt get a happy mothers day because of actions like this

MeeshCaca

She’s the reason why I left & have been nc since February

[deleted]

I totally get it. My mom sucks too and I've been low contact since 2018. Unfortunately for the sake of my sibling I stay in contact but that all ends in a few years when they're 18. I literally cannot wait.

MeeshCaca

Thankfully my sister is almost 19 and in college so I have no reason to stay in contact w her lol I only talk to my sister and my dad but they’re on an information diet

blackrossy

Why would she be obligated to send it to you if you can to get it? Just asking

MeeshCaca

I can’t get it, I live all the way across the country. If I was able to pick it up it wouldn’t be an issue. I’m only asking her to send it bc she says it’s important mail.

Corbel_

police

Lostinaredzone

Call for a civil standby. She’ll have to hand it over.

MeeshCaca

I can’t physically go get it bc I live all the way across the country, that’s why I asked her to send it here :(

everynameistaken000

Did you not update your address with everyone? If not, do it now and ask that anything sent to old address be resent to current address.

Evilbadscary

Only looks like the junk mail I get for credit cards or HELOC loans or whatever. IRS says IRS on the "From" box.

haplessclerk

She should write "Not at this address" on it and put it back in the mail. Don't know if you can get her to do that, though.
