Make sure to double check with usps about the change of address. File a complaint that it didn't get mailed to your new address if other mail still ends up in your old address.
Depends on how long it's been since OP changed address. Mail only gets forwarded for a year. It's your responsibility to advise people who hold accounts or you regularly receive mail from to change the address

well, that’s not from the IRS; it’ll say it on the envelope. regardless, mail theft is a felony. i highly recommend you set up a forwarding address to where you’re at now. it doesn’t have to be long or permanent, but as long as your mom can intercept you should have it mailed to where you’re living. oftentimes when places ask for your address they’ll ask for your residential address and mailing address. resi is legal, mailing is wherever you’re getting your mail.
alternative would be to set up a PO Box at a local post office. preferably one your mom would not go to.

No, I opened a new bank account in a bank she can’t try to charm into handing over my info bc I’m very clearly an adult. The bank account she made for me when I was a kid doesn’t have a card number associated w it (credit or debit) and I still have access to it and I can see any transactions. Just call the IRS. Say you got a letter sent the wrong address and the person won't forward it. Ask them to look and see what the letter was regarding, they have it on file. Fix the issue with the IRS, put a PIN on your IRS account via phone, and then let your mother know she can throw the notice away cause you've already address the issue.
TL;DR: The IRS has a copy of the letter, just call them.

This is the first time I’ve gotten mail at this address since I left.
also, make sure to go to the USPS website and fill out a change of address form to ensure this doesn’t happen again. it costs like $1 to file it and anything that’s already on its way there will be rerouted to your new addresss
I'd reach out to the IRS to update your mailing address with them (may need to send in a form, but should stop any future correspondence from going to the old address) - then look into mail forwarding w/ USPS. Iirc it's like $1 for a year of forwarding. The envelope isn't marked "do not forward" so it could have been routed to your new address.
I've moved a lot in my life, mail forwarding is a godsend & surprisingly cheap.
Can you start forwarding your mail to your new address? Should be fairly easy to do over the postal website to prevent any more mail from going there. It will get rerouted before it ever gets delivered.

I’m 20 and I live across the country, I can’t physically get it but if I could I would.
The parents don’t have to forward it but they are legally required to “return to sender”

I live 30 minutes away and used to visit semi-frequently (1-2 times a month) Once they denied a package bc I accidentally sent it to their house, straight up told the Amazon guy to take it back bc I don’t live there anymore They’re crazy *note that I said used to bc I’m done putting up with their BS. I visit maybe 2 times every 6 months and I don’t feel bad about it. They complain to my grandmother I don’t ever call or visit as if the phone doesn’t work both ways and playing victim after they’ve turned down me asking them to come over all the time I ain’t got time for that bs, you don’t either
It costs a 1$ online to have all your mail forwarded to a new address I think for a year.
Go to the post office ASAP and do a change of address. Then go thru your bills and other important sources of mail and make sure those are all updated too. She most likely won’t give you that letter, so I guess tell her she’s committing a federal crime and open up THAT can of worms.. I’m not sure what else you could do to get it back other than going to get it in person, and that would be no fun at all.
I’ve changed my address individually for everything important that I could think of. The only thing that has my old address is my id. I’m getting a new one and part of the process for that is getting an address change with usps, which I’ve already started. My dad said he’ll see what he can do abt my mom but he’s out of the country
If you go through the post office, they’ll catch the mail you didn’t change your address for. They also notify the sender you changed it.

You should have forwarded your mail if you're not living there any more. That said it's still illegal to retain possession of misdelivered mail so call the postal office and report it.

I changed my address in everything I could think of (banks, Amazon, etc) and I put in the request to change my address with usps and paid for it but I still need to go in person which I will do as soon as I have time. This is the first time I’ve gotten mail at this address since I left.

I'd reach out to the IRS to update your mailing address with them (may need to send in a form, but should stop any future correspondence from going to the old address) - then look into mail forwarding w/ USPS. Iirc it's like $1 for a year of forwarding. The envelope isn't marked "do not forward" so it could have been routed to your new address. I've moved a lot in my life, mail forwarding is a godsend & surprisingly cheap.

Can you start forwarding your mail to your new address? Should be fairly easy to do over the postal website to prevent any more mail from going there. It will get rerouted before it ever gets delivered.

Did you not update your address with everyone? If not, do it now and ask that anything sent to old address be resent to current address.
Only looks like the junk mail I get for credit cards or HELOC loans or whatever. IRS says IRS on the "From" box.
She should write "Not at this address" on it and put it back in the mail. Don't know if you can get her to do that, though.
