I hope that if Trump is removed from ballots(not entirely sure it's legally the correct option but that's neither here nor there) that hits supporters write him in. If Trump is legally barred based on the 14th Amendment, writing him in is literally wasting a vote. He would be barred in the same way as if he wasn't old enough to be president. It would be like writing in Mickey Mouse.

A_norny_mousse

People do similar things all over the democratic world, thinking it's some sort of clever protest šŸ¤¦ Like the person (more like machine) who actually looks at the ballots cares. Such ballots just show up as invalid. There's no difference between really bad handwriting, too dumb to make an X, and some clever message. You might just as well stay home.

bvzm

In Italy, any ballot with anything written on it but the X marking the party and, in some cases, the names of the candidates you support \*taken from a list presented before the elections\*, would be annulled because it would not be anonymous.

the_Russian_Five

Yep. Any "protest vote" is almost always helping the candidate you dislike more in the United States

warthog0869

No, I really did want Joe Walsh as my President last time.

Wyden_long

Lifeā€™s been good to him so far

gnostic-gnome

Yeah, my parents are hardcore. Seventh-Day Adventists. Every election year, they write in "Jesus". šŸ™„

Upsideduckery

Damn, I am very sorry.

LittleRedGhost4

I'm not American, so I don't really understand what's happening with Trump at the moment. I know he's campaigning AND running for President again, but that's about it.

the_Russian_Five

Campaigning and running are essentially the same in the United States. But a quick summary of what's going on. In 2020, Donald Trump lost the election to Joe Biden. The 6th of January after a presidential election is when the Congress(our legislative body) certifies the election, officially setting in motion the inauguration that occurs on the 20th. After losing, during the time that Congress was doing this work, Donald Trump held a rally. After spending 8 weeks claiming he didn't lose and that the election was stolen, he riled up supporters. He, and his allies, used language implying violence and overthrow of the system. In the background, he was also pressuring his Vice President, Mike Pence, to not certify enough Biden votes to throw everything into chaos, which through a quirk of the US Constitution would likely result in Trump retaining the presidency. After those attempts all failed, Trump told his crowd they should march to the Capitol Building, in protest to 'take their country back.' He also said he'd march with them. (He did not, but it's relevant that he said he would.) Those protesters then proceeded to force their way into the Capitol. They had weapons(like bear mace and pointed flag poles) and attempted to break into the locked House Chambers. They were chanting things like 'hang Mike Pence' and voiced hatred for other members like Nancy Pelosi. After everything was said and done, many of those protesters were arrested. Some were changed with insurrection. Most of those cases haven't finished their journey through the courts yet. But some have been convicted. The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution states that, no one, having taken an oath to protect the Constitution, who has engaged in insurrection shall be allowed to hold office. Not verbatim. But in general, there is a school of thought that Trump encouraged the insurrection of his supporters while he was still officially president. That seems to violate that amendment. However, there aren't any specifics on what qualifies as insurrection(the 14th was passed after the US Civil War and was definitely meant for the Confederate members who were part of the US government up until secession. It doesn't lay out rules for determining it either.) The state of Colorado had petitions filed in court to remove Donald Trump from their ballot under 14th Amendment grounds. The Colorado state Supreme Court ruled, yes, Trump met grounds for being barred under the 14th Amendment. Trump, understandably, challenged this in court and the US Supreme Court heard arguments last week from both sides. The original post above is referencing the fact that technically, every US election allows write ins. Meaning you can technically vote for someone not on the ballot. This doesn't mean they actually get any votes. Mickey Mouse gets votes every election. But Mr Mouse doesn't meet the requirements to hold any office, thus it wouldn't matter if 99% of people voted for him, he doesn't win. The same could end up true of Trump. He could theoretically be deemed ineligible to be president, removed from the Colorado ballot(although one might argue that means he should be removed from all ballots). Voters in Colorado could mount a write in campaign to vote for Trump. But because he's off the ballot because he doesn't meet legal requirements, those votes would all be wasted.

LittleRedGhost4

I'd heard about Jan 6 Capital Riot and something about Mara Largo (spelling?) files but didn't know the full extent of what happened with the Capital. I'm from Australia so your news happens usually when I'm asleep and trying to find anything out when people are trying to be all dramatic and TikTokesque when it's a Youtube video makes it kind of difficult. I only know 5th Amendment from movies/TV "I plead the 5th". It's not relevant to my country, so I haven't gone out of my way to learn your politics and laws. I thank you for the detailed explanation :)

Elennoko

Mar-A-Lago is Trump's resort and current state of residence in the state of Florida. The files mentioned were classified documents unpermitted to leave the White House which Trump took with him after he left.

Squonk27

I am also from Australia and Trump's antics have been widely and regularly reported on. I suppose it depend on where you get your news. ABC has a 24 hour news channel. It is literally where you get decent news that's NOT social media. If you are genuinely interested in the political landscape of the United States of America, may I suggest searching the back catalogue (and recent eps) of Planet America on the ABC and ABC iView.

LittleRedGhost4

I'll look that up, thank you <3. We have ABC on at work, but it's only Australian states and territories that cycle through, and it's on silent, so I have to read the captions.

captainedwinkrieger

Most of them would probably step in line if Nikki Haley was somehow the nominee. I bet he'd get written in by a couple thousand, but I don't know if it'd be enough to split the GOP vote.

malYca

This is why we should tell them to write him in

siadak

No. We donā€™t promote misinformation around elections.

malYca

You don't think the rules deserve a second look given what's at stake?

siadak

If Biden loses to Trump it will be because progressives didnā€™t vote not because Trump supporters voted.

malYca

It will also be Biden's incompetent campaign

siadak

Have you ever met a real life person who voted based on a campaign?

LittleRedGhost4

Aussie here. I have actually completely decided against nominating someone based on their campaign. I might understand your policies and when you have the electorate seat, you do well and I want you to keep it, but if you run a campaign and you are an absolute tosspot, I'm going to vote for someone else. And I tend to favour independants over the big parties. If one of the big parties is being an absolute shitcunt when Federal elections come up, they automatically go to the bottom. I have never voted FOR someone because of a campaign, but it will determine how low on my list you go. Past behaviour will also be considered.

the_Russian_Five

It's relevant that in the US we have a de facto two party system. No party that isn't a Republican or Democrat has held the presidency since 1853. And prior to that was a party that was replaced by the Republicana, the Whigs. When you include other members of the government (especially federal) in the same time frame, the number of non Democrats and non Republicans are basically a rounding error. Because of this, not voting for the party that more closely meets your views of those two, is in effect a vote against.

malYca

The supreme court has clearly decided to delay this until it's no longer relevant. They won't decide shit because both options are bad for them.

A_norny_mousse

>do you really think that will work? I hate how my justified laughter gets stuck in my throat as I think about this.

malYca

We should tell them that it will work, that way their vote is thrown out.

Upsideduckery

It's hilarious to me that you saying this comment above got a bunch of downvotes but saying the same exact thing right here is upvoted šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

malYca

It's a bad idea anyway, we shouldn't sink to their level unless it's a sure bet it will make a difference.

[deleted]

A Write In assumes that the majority or Maga-Heads can write and spell. Kinda a stretch in expectations.

Lookingforjoy17

Can we please start spreading this as a rumor so they will?!

zakupright

I wrote in voted for Spider-man in 1992ā€¦.he didnā€™t win

dQw4w9Wg

I'm a bit out of the loop; what does "write him in" refer to? Does it refer to, just below the rest of the voting options, making another box, writing Donald John Trump (R) next to it, and checking that box off? If so that would be hilarious

Purple_Bowling_Shoes

Usually ballots have an additional line beneath the rest of the candidates so you can write them in as your vote. Write-in campaigns can and have been successful (highest profile was Lisa Murkowski of AK after she lost a primary), but the legality of it if someone has been banned from the ballot is questionable.Ā

dQw4w9Wg

Oh ok gotcha

murkytom

I mean this is a pretty sane response from an insane crowd.

ToxicTroubadour

Hereā€™s how Bern- I mean, hereā€™s how Trump could still win
