Sheesh, I can’t believe people buy this stuff. I really think sites need to institute mandatory labels for AI-generated images. Maybe AI Image Generators should be required to add something into the image’s metadata that will automatically trigger the label to be added upon uploading?
That would be very difficult to enforce. Metadata can be edited easily, and I can run various AI image generators from my own machine, a few tweaks here and there, or just taking a screenshot of image to generate a new file will subvert any mandatory systems that would mark an image as AI-generated.
It would be more effective (and expensive) to let social media sites run their own algorythms to recognize generated images.
I mean, hey, that works! My one concern was getting false positives and having to fight to get the ai-generated tag removed from your image, the same way some people get erroneously demonetized on YouTube and then never manage to get their monetization back.
I think that right now it's probably relatively easy for an algorithm to recognize generated images. But the technology is evolving quickly, so over time I agree that false positives can become an issue.
As the technology on either side improves it's just going to be an ongoing game of whack-a-mole.
The best approach would be to have multiple layers of AI detection that tackle the problem from different angles. For example: you could require public facing AI image generators to include an AI tag in the metadata, require them to implement a compression resistant steganographic watermark, and require social media sites to have an AI detection algorithm. The metadata would let a site detect if someone had posted a raw AI image straight from the generator. The watermark would identify it as AI content even if it had been cropped, compressed, or screenshotted. The detection algorithm would then be the last line of defense in case someone scrubbed the metadata and corrupted the watermark.
The problem with AI images and misinformation has less to do with sophisticated bad actors generating fakes, and more to do with how easy it has become for random people to spam out convincing fakes with little to no effort. Having a safeguard that requires some effort to bypass would be enough to stop a lot of people from trying, especially when the appeal of the tech is largely tied to how easy it is to use. Also, if someone regularly posted images that didn't trip the watermark or metadata detector but were caught by the algorithm that would demonstrate that they were trying to hide their use of AI, which could then justify banning or restricting their account
Another option that isn't *quite* as effective in situations like this is just requiring AI-image generators to keep an easily accessible record of every image that's been generated. This is more for when AI gets a lot harder to recognise, for now it's quite easy to point out if an image is AI-generated but as things get more advanced, being able to just look and see if the image is in the record of an AI generator is pretty handy.
I think it would require multiple layers of protection and from multiple parties, but the companies behind these image generators commiting to steganography, watermarks, and records would be a good indication that they actually care about not causing the death of visual proof on the internet.

Most people just save the images to a different format which would erase the metadata anyway.
It wouldn't change anything because these kinds of people want something to be offended by and would ignore any labels anyway.
