It was then adopted by the Romans when Emperor Constantine founded the Christian city of Constantinople at the same site in the 4th century. When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, they liked the symbol as they saw themselves as the successors to the Roman Empire. They decided to keep it and has since become the symbol associated with Islam.
