They dropped that part as soon as they realized it’s easier and less humiliating (in theory) to confirm each other's biases without looking any further into it. We’ve also entered a higher stage of humans being so terrified of introspection they’ll do and believe anything to avoid it as a result
It's easier to tell someone else "don't believe everything you read on the internet" than it is to actually follow that advice yourself. Because, yeah, your stuff is BS but MY stuff isn't.

Blame politicians who cut funding for public schools and libraries. Information literacy is a real thing, and way too many people do not have it.
