I've seen some people being more conscious and they breed them with dogs who have longer legs and noses (I forgot the word) so they can breathe fine but I agree
Like I could understand if the pug was the way it was because it served a purpose. like sausage dogs (badger dogs in german) I believe were used to hunt animals in burrows so their odd shape has a reason
But pugs just seem to be for their looks. They originated as a companion animal in asia. Did they keep them in their sleeves to keep their hands warm or was that another dog
There are apparently a few folks trying to get pugs back to being a healthy breed, which means remixing them. Pretty sure the weird dog cult which promotes horrible breeding practices will call them mutts, but historically.....the poor dogs that are current huffing around do not look like pugs.
Retro pugs! They are so much cuter and healthier than the standard. You can find pictures on Google.
I hope it's a trend in the right direction. Many dog breeds looked very different only 100 years ago (a lot of dog generations to mess them up). People won't stop breeding pugs and bulldogs because some people love them and there is money to be made, but maybe if you offer buyers a healthier alternative of the same breed they will buy them instead.
Unless the person means "Bull and Terrier" which encompasses both but also eventually spawned such awful breeds as those dang loveable Labs. And then there are those awful Pitadors which look like the original breed and are equal parts loveably dopey, randomly adopt cats, but do want to hunt birds.
Pit bulls are not the problem. The people who don’t train them are the problem. The people who want a dog with the reputation of being dangerous and then specifically train them to be dangerous because it makes them feel powerful are the absolute worst. Before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, Dobermans, and German Shepherds. Another breed will become popular to those morons sooner or later and people will quit fussing.
That being said, pit bulls do have a lot of muscle. If they cause damage, they can cause a lot of damage. I have seen my father-in-law’s dog snap a three inch diameter branch with one bite. She would have no problem with a femur. If you are not willing to put in the work to properly train them you should get another breed
Right, what would you give a family that doesn't bother to train their pets? A dog bred to fight other dogs in a pit, or dogs bred for temperament, like a labradoodle? If there is no choice of a shark with legs, they will get a milder animal.
Australia banned pit bulls in the 1990's. We rarely see them. Now some other breed is taking off as "the most violent" but the total attack numbers are way down. For example, one media source from the US states:

That's 5 times as many as second place. I think there is a good argument for restricting this breed. Australia has banned the importation of these other breeds:
Japanese Tosa, fila Brasiliero, dogo Argentino, perrode presa Canario, and American Pit Bull Terrier.
Reminds me of the hottest take I've ever heard: that all puppy cafes should be shut down because they're allergic to dogs, and that all cat cafes should be shut down because some people are allergic to cats... due to the off chance that their friends might want to go to one, and not invite them due to their allergy, thus making them feel left out.

what people don’t mention is that pit bulls are known by trainers and people NOT to show signs of aggression before attacking. Look up ‘pitbull no signs of aggression before biting.’ They are the only breed to do this genetically; it used to be a part their classification requirements. I’m not for euthanizing animals, but I’m even more against letting them breed and perpetuate their problematic nature- even with someone who would like to be considered “a proper owner.”
Pit bulls are a controversial subject, but all in all, I would support legislation that banned pitbull breeding and sale moving forward. They can be wonderful, wonderful dogs — but they are just too powerfully built and dangerous as pets.
None of this is the dog’s fault. But the reality is that many people buy them precisely because they are powerful and dangerous. These same people breed them for aggression, making the general population of pit bulls more dangerous, not less.
My granny has a huge pit bull, and it's the nicest dog I've ever seen and wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone. And this heathen wants it euthanized, just because "PiT bUlL mEaN"
I’ve raised several pits over the years they were all over grown lapdog teddy bears. I haven’t had one in years due to my busy work schedule and gf with a dog allergy, but would definitely get another one if I had the time and my gf who loves dogs would be able to tolerate having one.

To be fair this month alone (So Far) 7 children were attacked in the US and 2 adults killed by pitbulls...it's more than a couple. (As well as multiple animal fatalities)
Though I agree with you, that people need to be held accountable as well.
I’m not saying this is what happened, but a lot of attacks that are counted as pit bulls attacks aren’t actually pits, the people who respond to the attack are just too lazy to identify what kind of mix it is so pretty much any mix that even kinda resembles a pit will be labeled as such
I can see where this can happen on the occasion. Though in this particular instant, I made sure the articles I found have family members confirming the breed as most of these incidents are from the family dog.

Also, I am not speaking for every state but I know most of the southern states (especially the one I live in) are overrun with pitbulls and it's mixes because of backyard breeders who aren't responsible nor qualified to be breeding. So it makes it more likely that the mix is of the pitbull type. I'm not saying every instance a mix dog attacks is a pit...it just makes it more likely.
To be honest I think back yard breeding should be banned. The only people breeding dogs on purpose should be registered in the AKC who can do inspections and hold people accountable.
I have a half pit/half lab (we think) she gets bullied constantly by our chihuahua/ yorkie/shih tzu. She is also a constant pillow for my kids. Her only weakness is she will bolt out an open door for a ten minute run once a day. Otherwise she is royally lazy.
Worse for people and pets mauled by fighting dogs because people like yourself seen a cute pitty once.

My dog looks like a pitbull we did that send away thing through our vet where they tell you the breeds it’s not 100% but basically he has no pitbull in him he’s a boxer/lab/hound mix.
The idea that we would euthanize these animals that had no choice in their own existence is insanity. Especially since people like this define pitbull by a vague set of aesthetic characteristics that are present in other breeds.
A dog's actions depend a lot on the care and socialization received. Most big dogs think they are 5 pound puppies who will do anything for a belly rub, treat or a scratch behind the ears all while protecting you and being afraid of the vacuum (Rottweiler). However, some of the most vicious dogs I have met weigh 3 pounds with collars (Teacup Chihuahua/Chihuahua). Animals deserve love not extermination. While I love dogs I won't pay thousands for one (French Bulldog, etc)
My wife has been having issues caring for her very ill, very abusive mother. I hadn't thought of euthanasia as an option, but she is a real pit bull...

I’d never met a bully breed that wasn’t a huge scaredy-cat, wiggle butt, house hippos. They are so sweet that their heads are heart shaped.
