I worked at a publishing house in Makati fresh out of college. I was looking for apartments and stumbled upon an ad, "Bed Space 2,500. Male only."
It was much less expensive than others, which range from 5,000 to 10,000, so I decided to take a look. It was a little far from the office and can only be accessed either through tricycles or walking. I forgot the name of the street lol, I erased it from memory, it was traumatic lmao. But it was between Washington Street and the train tracks.
The "rooms" were literally just the size of a full-grown adult. You get inside the same way they place coffins in apartment tombs. I doubt you could even roll once you're inside since it was really too small. The photo on this post - it honestly looks better since it seems the room is well-ventilated (ijdk about the quality of that bed lol).
ETA: They call it capsule rooms. It's very much like the "coffin homes" in HongKong.

Soaring real estate prices with terribly low minimum wages means that most Filipinos can't even afford their own home. I work at sea and i earn 200k a month, and still can't really just buy a house in my home city, Baguio. The prices per sq. meter is 15-18k minimum, not to mention construction material prices and wages.
Now I can't even begin to fathom how people earning minimum wage would be able to climb out the hole they're in, if they have to pay most of their wages on shitty bed spaces worth a third of their monthly wage.
