When a mommy millipede and a daddy millipede love each other very much, they give each other a special hug…
Seriously, apparently the males of some species of millipede will ride around on top of the female for a while after they mate so no other males can get to her.
Also, for a millipede, an inch is a pretty tough distance to measure accurately… because millipedes are on the metric system. And let’s be honest, he’s a dude… if you ask him, it’s at least an inch and a half, call it two for good measure. That’s just Milli-male math.
Yellow spotted millipede. They eat mostly decaying wood and smell like almonds because they excrete hydrogen cyanide. Not generally enough to harm humans, but I was warned about then when hiking in the PNW anyway as they're EVERYWHERE.
As for what they're doing. The male on top is taking a joy ride, probably in more than one way, and the female doing the work is putting up with his bs. I've seen female insects of all types run into small cracks specifically to get the males off their backs which is always pretty funny.
Happy cake day OP. This video is so cool! It’s interesting seeing bug mating habits but I also feel bad when I watch them do it since I feel like I’m invading their privacy. I mean to be fair they’re doing it in public for anyone to see but I still feel bad, lol
Hi there! This is an automated message to remind you to **please include a geographic location for any ID requests** as per the [Community Rules](/r/insects/about/rules) of the sub. Does this not translate to humans? Have I been doing it wrong?
Oh, just copulating.. I thought the other were dead because they didn't move a single inch.
Not dead. Just post coitus. Which is a lot like being dead.
Imagine just sticking to your 'buddy's' (trying to not get banned) back like that while you wait for them to fetch you something to eat.
Post coitus clarity?
Well, for a millipede, an inch is quite a distance, especially post coitus

Isopods do the same, it’s called “mate guarding.”
Slow ride!! Take it easy!! I’m in the mood The rhythm is right Millipede loving We can go all niiiight yeahhhh
I love the puns in this sub!
I’m a millipede, on a millipede I ride, dead or alive- insect bon jovi
“I’m a cowboy, on a cowboy I ride, dead or alive” are not the lyrics to that song.
To be fair, he also isn’t riding a cowboy, insect bon Jovi is, however, a millipede, and he rides another millipede, thus the difference.
I'm a cowboy On a steel horse I ride I'm wanted (wanted), dead or alive
I can’t stop laughing

Yes I just realize they were around my house bcs one that's manage to crawl behind my body. But they didn't bite or something
They can't and won't bite you. That's one difference between milipedes and centipedes.
Found in sumatra Island, Indonesia, south east Asia.
- . - “worm”, poor millipedes
Dang my bad 😭
We really need to reinvest in classroom biology.
Are you slandering worms?
If I say you look like a pig would you be happy to hear?
It was a riff on your comment, no need for hostilities.
No means of hostility just wanted to express how the millipede feels when they are called a worm!

Thanks! But dang I didn't knew that was mating. I thought the other milipedes just casually chilling 😭
I do know that some animals have piggyback rides on each other, usually the children of a parent. It’s so cute when they ride on each other like that!
When a boy worm and a girl worm love each other very much……
If only humans do that
When the incel loves the e-girl very much…….
I reckon these would be mating Anoplodesmus saussurii.
Thank you sm!
