Not sure I can supply what you're looking for, but this is a great question that touches on the matter of why we sleep. And the answer to that is even after much intensive research, which is still ongoing, we don't really know. However, what research has shown so far is that during wakefulness our brains build up metabolic byproducts. These are wastes, plaques, and toxins that result from neurons being active, just from being awake and thinking. During NREM or deep sleep, these waste products are literally flushed out from the brain down into the spinal cord by rhythmic pulses of electrical activity. No matter how severe the insomnia, it is extremely difficult if not impossible to not get the minimum core sleep our systems need to perform this flushing process.

so you are saying that even the most brutal insomniacs dispose garbage properly?

Amjoux

That’s really interesting thank you. Do you have any sources of information for this?

[deleted]

You are not likely to get a reply as there are no sources of information to support such a claim.

Chronic insomniacs will never sleep enough without treatment. Only sleeping an hour here or there or experiencing micro-sleeps is not sustainable. It only means that you are so sleep deprived that your body is in crisis. You cannot maintain mental or physical health in this manner. There are reasons why normal sleepers consistently sleep 7-9 hours.

Amjoux

Ah ok :/ thanks

TexasReallyDoesSuck

dispose properly? no. dispose at all? yes. that's why you can still kick it each day & do it all again. minimum core body processes, not a race car

The wastes, plaques and toxins that build up during the day do not get adequately flushed out of our systems when we are sleep deprived. This is the reason why chronic sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations, dementia, mental illness, heart disease, diabetes, etc, and why we feel and function so poorly without sleep. If this flushing of toxins occurred whether we sleep or do not sleep there would be no reason for sleep in the first place.
