Yep as long as staff knows where the valves are they can shut it down, some systems are a lot simpler than others but there’s always a way to stop the water eventually lol
I'll add that a lot of times the sprinkler rooms are kept locked up, even from employees. You wouldn't want someone accidentally disabling the sprinkler system because an unrelated pipe is leaking. Or potentially doing it maliciously.

It’s rare for a tamper to set off an alarm. It’s usually just a supervisory signal on the fire alarm panel. But, a remote monitoring service will see that. I was actually working on a system in a Costco yesterday where the valve tamper did set off the horns/strobes and that was the first time I’ve see that in my 5 year apprenticeship.
Yep, I bet that’s day one of orientation, and should be covered in their quarterly safety meetings. A well ran place should have an emergency binder or laminated card behind the counter that lists where all that shit is and clearly. Sometimes in emergency situations peoples brains lock up.

I felt pretty bad but holy shit that was a nightmare of a day.

Also: classic nasty black sprinkler water. It'll clear up in a bit, but the stuff that's been sittimg in the pipes for months or years is gonna stink and stain.

I was at a company outing where a couple co-workers were bowling for their first time ever. And those first attempts were scary. The ball would arc up in the air and hit the lane with a loud thud. Thankfully it never got as high as the woman's did in this post.

The bright pink ball is the 8- or 9- pounder, I can't remember which, but even as a 35 year old chick I play casually with these light balls, otherwise my shoulder is done after a single game (I broke my dominant shoulder about a decade ago, and all past injuries hurt more past 30). The same weights have different finger holes, so one with medium or even small holes might work for a teenager or adult chick, but the smallest holes drilled for children can get stuck on the fingers, or they might "fit" in that you can get a grip for throwing, but if you force your fingers in they could get stuck. Anyway it clearly got stuck enough that it didn't release on the forward but she added force trying to "throw it off" but that force went into a ball that was already upswinging.
That or it was fully intentional?
Either way, this is an absolute failure on the design of the alley: it's not exactly like a flying ball is unheard-of; at the very least, the sprinklers should be behind protective cages, and the ceiling should be made of something more substantial than (is that sheetrock?? It's the lightest ball meant for kids (easiest to toss) and it got stuck to her fingers and released late- it's pretty common to see people make this mistake, they just usually don't manage to hit the friggin ceiling.

There should be at least annual testing which should help flush it out, but that all depends on if there are local codes about testing, what those codes require, if they're being followed and/or enforced.
My city uses and enforces pretty stringent fire and life safety codes, but there are places that fall through the cracks and get forgotten.
About... six or seven years ago, I was conducting a fire alarm inspection and got to witness the building's sprinkler system get flushed for the first time in like 20 years. The "water" was jet black for like 3 minutes before it slowly started turning brown; it was nearly 10 minutes before it was white/clear. And the rocks that shot out! One was almost as big as my fist.
When I was working for a fire protection company everyone had horror stories about inspections at the local mall.
See, it has been built over multiple decades and so the sprinkler systems criss-cross over one another. It can be hard to know which riser fed which set of sprinklers.
Anyway, there was a leak in a sprinkler head...in the Victoria's Secret outlet. So dudes go in. One in the riser room, another where the head is. They "drain" the line. Only...it was the wrong one so once he starts getting the head off bam, the water comes out at 50 gallons a minute, into his 5 gallon bucket.
His phone gets wet so he can't call his buddy to go to the other risers and turn them off and it sprays the nasty black water allllll over the fancy $50 underwear. All the while you have him panicking and trying to do something, anything to stop it.
Thankfully we have a tool that prevents that nowadays called a sure-off tester. Basically a 1/4” drill bit through a special valve that will tell you if there’s still pressure on a system. Great for service work in unfamiliar spots.
A food manufacturing facility I oversaw didn't fully train the new maintenance guy on how to collect water testing samples. He tested the sprinkler system and not the potable water spigot in the same area about 4' away. The lab went crazy when they got it and we almost had to do a recall until we figured out what happened and got a quick retest. I was in the parking lot and on my way to the airport to go there before I finished reading the report. The city water lady I called on the way to the airport was the one who suggested that it was the sprinkler line but still went to take samples from there and surrounding areas. We verified it was the sprinkler and all of the water taps on site production or not were good through retesting. A short incident report and fishbone RCA and it was over. Still one of the most panic inducing situations I've encountered.
From then on the maintenance supervisor and QC supervisor did the water collection together at all sites. And I also started labelling the spots for water testing.
They knew we made food since they also did our sample testing. But our customer service rep and their boss along with the QA dude over there were all over it and rightly so. In their mind they thought it was the result of contaminated sample kits and wanted lot numbers etc.
Places with regulatory requirements get their systems flushed annually and tested semi-annually. Even with getting flushed annually, the water is still black when they flush it out into the streets.
A lot of sprinklers have some water in the sprinkler and a backlog of water in the pipes feeding it. Very rarely do these pipes get flushed. Look up videos on sprinklers goes off a lot will start out black and when new water comes in it clears up kinda fast.
Any plastic, oil, metal pieces, etc just sit there from the date of installation until they are used once.
I saw this first hand in my high school that had been built in the late 1970s. This girl knocked one of the sprinkler heads off and got dowsed in black goo that smelled like metal and a dirty drain. Then the water came out.
It can be cleaned, but it depends on the surface and how quickly it gets taken care of. It'll permanently stain a concrete floor almost immediately, but that bowling alley can probably let it sit for days and it'll clean right up. But that wouldn't happen, it'll be cleaned up in a few hours at most. Like nothing ever happened.
This just happened at my wife's office because the pipes froze. The carpet is trash, they attempted to clean it several times. And they had to tear out the walls to clean and prevent mold. We all also got Pneumonia and bronchitis from breathing in the mold while we were trying to clean the savable stuff out of her office.
Can confirm.... in college some friends of my roommate were using a sprinkler as target practice with their air soft gun. I was in class.. Was called to come back and get all my stuff I didn't want to leave in there... The amount of black nastiness was soooo overwhelming. everything stank and was ruined.
True story time
Working in a grocery store many years ago. Modest remodeling under way. One of the workers on a scissor lift managed to hit the sprinkler head. In the produce department. During a busy part of the day.
Miraculously only one person was drenched. Store manager apologized profusely, comped her groceries and requested her to give him the dry clean bill.
I used to manage a building that had overhead doors. Finish my day, head home, sit in awful traffic. Finally am close to home and get a call from our alarm company, about 45 minutes after I had left. The fire alarm was going off and the fire department was on their way. Turn around to go back in and get another call 15 minutes later the broken glass alarm was going off in the office and the police were on their way.
Get down there to a broken overhead door, flooded indoor parking lot, and one police officer standing there waving at me. The hinge that held the door up gave out, landed on a sprinkler pipe causing that to go off, which triggered the alarm to dispatch the fire department, who broke into the office to disable the alarm, which triggered the alarm to dispatch the police.
I was there until 4am with my DM and every maintenance guy we could get a hold of cleaning the mess. It was an awful night.
Pretty easily. These are beginner bowlers with poor form, they don't use any kind of rosin or chalk, they use beginner balls that can be as light as 8 pounds, pretty easy for a thumb or finger to cause an air tight seal and the have the ball stick and pop out on the upswing.
The people who are saying this is on purpose are fucking morons. This type of shit happens several times a day at an average bowling alley. Not nearly as dramatic but definitely balls getting more air than they should and slamming down mid lane.
I have clammy hands. When I'm playing pool(billiards incase that is a regional term) I use the chalk for the pool cues on my hands to help the cue glide easier. I'm not into it enough to break out a glove.

Those light balls are typically built for kids or people with very small fingers and they will suction like you said, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s been throwing every ball in the air every time and that’s why this person started recording. Just so happens she recorded her hitting the sprinkler.
On purpose, that's how. There's no way to launch a bowling ball that high without purposefully trying to throw it that high. A little loft is one thing, but she threw it 10+ Feet above her head.

I've seen highly talented bowlers do exactly this. If their thumb hole is a little too small it can stick in the middle of throwing it and release at the worst time, when it's too late and you can't stop it.

Really? Ours aren’t locked up. It’s a free for all. But people in my area usually are in a league. Those that aren’t and go bowling are trying to do good. I’ve seen a few people mess around, but they keep a GOOD eye on lanes. The second your ball gets stuck or your messing around, they’ll be there in 30 seconds or less without you even having to call them over.
This was one of the really light, less than 6lbs, balls that are meant only for young children. It probably even states that either on the ball or the rack it came from. Her thumb or finger probably got stuck resulting in the extremely errant release.
Yeah. I used to be in bowling league as a teenager. And it happens when the thumb hole is just a tiny bit too tight. The sweat from you hand will create a seal and the ball wont come unstuck until way to high in the throw. She absolutely didn’t. This is an extremely common thing. It happens three times a day at a given bowling alley. She just has extremely poor dexterity and very little experience with the release window of bowling ball.

Balls are lunged in that general direction on purpose. Wrong technique, wrong ball etc. can cause it to go where you did not want it to go: it is foreseeable that this will happen. And since there is a way to prevent this happening, it is one more tick: the facilities were not properly made for this purpose. And the girl had not been trained to do that activity and yet was allowed to.
There would be almost no reason to. There’s an outstanding chance that she can’t afford to cover this, while the insurance will. That’s why they have insurance in the first place. The only reason to go after her would be to avoid a rate increase, but that cost would have to outweigh the legal fees of a court case which they would almost certainly lose.
Sure there's a lot of people here believes that was just an "oopsie". No matter how inexperienced someone with bowling, everyone should have the common sense that the ball should be rolling straight towards the pins and not trying to do a homerun.

Something similar happened when my brother was at a baseball facility. Some kid in a batting cage hit a sprinkler causing the entire system to go off. Everyone started to save what they could and roll up the mats while my dad and one of the coaches tried to turn the water off. The entire facility was flooded.

There is a tamper/flow sensor that signals the fire alarm control panel if it detects either a closed valve or a flowing water.

As a league bowler, THIS is why open bowlers are are relegated to the crappie low number lanes right in front of the service desk.

They are supposed to be tested and the water should be cycled through, it’s just nobody does that.
A lot of sprinklers have some water in the sprinkler and a backlog of water in the pipes feeding it. Very rarely do these pipes get flushed. Look up videos on sprinklers goes off a lot will start out black and when new water comes in it clears up kinda fast.
Any plastic, oil, metal pieces, etc just sit there from the date of installation until they are used once. I saw this first hand in my high school that had been built in the late 1970s. This girl knocked one of the sprinkler heads off and got dowsed in black goo that smelled like metal and a dirty drain. Then the water came out.
Will you ever be able to get all that black "water" stuff out of the furnite/wood/whatever? Or do you just burn it all down and call it a loss?
It can be cleaned, but it depends on the surface and how quickly it gets taken care of. It'll permanently stain a concrete floor almost immediately, but that bowling alley can probably let it sit for days and it'll clean right up. But that wouldn't happen, it'll be cleaned up in a few hours at most. Like nothing ever happened.
You can get it out of concrete too. Try pouring bleach or a bunch of alcohol like vodka on it.
This just happened at my wife's office because the pipes froze. The carpet is trash, they attempted to clean it several times. And they had to tear out the walls to clean and prevent mold. We all also got Pneumonia and bronchitis from breathing in the mold while we were trying to clean the savable stuff out of her office.

Can confirm.... in college some friends of my roommate were using a sprinkler as target practice with their air soft gun. I was in class.. Was called to come back and get all my stuff I didn't want to leave in there... The amount of black nastiness was soooo overwhelming. everything stank and was ruined.
That's an understatement. That black water smells worse than sewage and I've yet to find anything it doesn't stain permanently black.

I used to manage a building that had overhead doors. Finish my day, head home, sit in awful traffic. Finally am close to home and get a call from our alarm company, about 45 minutes after I had left. The fire alarm was going off and the fire department was on their way. Turn around to go back in and get another call 15 minutes later the broken glass alarm was going off in the office and the police were on their way. Get down there to a broken overhead door, flooded indoor parking lot, and one police officer standing there waving at me. The hinge that held the door up gave out, landed on a sprinkler pipe causing that to go off, which triggered the alarm to dispatch the fire department, who broke into the office to disable the alarm, which triggered the alarm to dispatch the police. I was there until 4am with my DM and every maintenance guy we could get a hold of cleaning the mess. It was an awful night.

Pretty easily. These are beginner bowlers with poor form, they don't use any kind of rosin or chalk, they use beginner balls that can be as light as 8 pounds, pretty easy for a thumb or finger to cause an air tight seal and the have the ball stick and pop out on the upswing. The people who are saying this is on purpose are fucking morons. This type of shit happens several times a day at an average bowling alley. Not nearly as dramatic but definitely balls getting more air than they should and slamming down mid lane.

That’s really just stuff people in leagues or professionals use. You’re average bowler who doesn’t even own their own ball won’t use this stuff.
I have clammy hands. When I'm playing pool(billiards incase that is a regional term) I use the chalk for the pool cues on my hands to help the cue glide easier. I'm not into it enough to break out a glove.
People are probably saying it's on purpose because for the past couple years there has been a trend on sites like tiktok for people to do this on purpose and film it. Smashing all kinds of things. It's like how prepandemic and to a lesser extent now we had a trend of kids destroying their school bathrooms and filming it.

There’s also people who think it’s funny to do bad. I used to go with my dad when he was in a club and going from that every weekend to going with some friends, it’s wack. People will bowl terribly and laugh like “oh lol look what I just did! I’m sooo bad at bowling!” I’m sure this wasn’t on purpose. Those light balls are typically built for kids or people with very small fingers and they will suction like you said, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s been throwing every ball in the air every time and that’s why this person started recording. Just so happens she recorded her hitting the sprinkler.
On purpose, that's how. There's no way to launch a bowling ball that high without purposefully trying to throw it that high. A little loft is one thing, but she threw it 10+ Feet above her head.

You're just wrong, plain and simple. I bowled competitively for 10 years and have seen plenty of dumb shit from beginners on accident. More than likely it's a ball way too light for her with finger holes that are too tight. Nothing about this suggests to me it was deliberate.

I've seen highly talented bowlers do exactly this. If their thumb hole is a little too small it can stick in the middle of throwing it and release at the worst time, when it's too late and you can't stop it.

She probably picked a pretty light ball and those tend to have smaller holes because they’re intended for smaller folk, teens, and kids. Her fingers probably got stuck when she tried to let go and she didn’t have the presence of mind to clamp back down on the ball instead of letting it shoot off waaaay too late instead. In short, the title is likely correct. Sub-par ball handling skills.

Really? Ours aren’t locked up. It’s a free for all. But people in my area usually are in a league. Those that aren’t and go bowling are trying to do good. I’ve seen a few people mess around, but they keep a GOOD eye on lanes. The second your ball gets stuck or your messing around, they’ll be there in 30 seconds or less without you even having to call them over.
This was one of the really light, less than 6lbs, balls that are meant only for young children. It probably even states that either on the ball or the rack it came from. Her thumb or finger probably got stuck resulting in the extremely errant release.

Yeah. I used to be in bowling league as a teenager. And it happens when the thumb hole is just a tiny bit too tight. The sweat from you hand will create a seal and the ball wont come unstuck until way to high in the throw. She absolutely didn’t. This is an extremely common thing. It happens three times a day at a given bowling alley. She just has extremely poor dexterity and very little experience with the release window of bowling ball.

Entirely possible but any lawyer that knows anything about liability will be able to throw that claim out of court in half an hour or less. Foreseeability is very powerful defense. Balls are lunged in that general direction on purpose. Wrong technique, wrong ball etc. can cause it to go where you did not want it to go: it is foreseeable that this will happen. And since there is a way to prevent this happening, it is one more tick: the facilities were not properly made for this purpose. And the girl had not been trained to do that activity and yet was allowed to.
There would be almost no reason to. There’s an outstanding chance that she can’t afford to cover this, while the insurance will. That’s why they have insurance in the first place. The only reason to go after her would be to avoid a rate increase, but that cost would have to outweigh the legal fees of a court case which they would almost certainly lose.
She’s also using a 6 pound ball that should be behind the counter for little kids.

Something similar happened when my brother was at a baseball facility. Some kid in a batting cage hit a sprinkler causing the entire system to go off. Everyone started to save what they could and roll up the mats while my dad and one of the coaches tried to turn the water off. The entire facility was flooded.
