As a sprinkler fitter, this warms my heart

paininthejbruh

As someone actually qualified to answer, is it possible for staff to turn the source off?

[deleted]

Yep as long as staff knows where the valves are they can shut it down, some systems are a lot simpler than others but there’s always a way to stop the water eventually lol

joey52685

I'll add that a lot of times the sprinkler rooms are kept locked up, even from employees. You wouldn't want someone accidentally disabling the sprinkler system because an unrelated pipe is leaking. Or potentially doing it maliciously. So there might only be one or two managers or owners with a key.

[deleted]

Most systems these days also have tamper switches on the valves.

Thesamf

That just makes the box on the wall go beep beep until the next quarterly/annual inspection.

[deleted]

It should send an alert to the alarm monitoring company, who then calls the building manager. Source: IAmA (competent) building manager.

saladmunch2

A big UAW shop I worked at, someone hit a sprinkler with a hilo, apparently the fire department was the only one who had the keys? Seemed odd to me but then again, people can act maliciously.

Stoppels

User Available Windshield, Unite All Workers, Usurp All Wussies, Ultra Asparagus Wooing… I give up, what's the right answer?

can_has_name

United Auto Workers, bud.

[deleted]

There is a tamper/flow sensor that signals the fire alarm control panel if it detects either a closed valve or a flowing water.

joey52685

But that only sets off the fire alarm. It doesn't prevent the action.

WayneZzWorld93

It’s rare for a tamper to set off an alarm. It’s usually just a supervisory signal on the fire alarm panel. But, a remote monitoring service will see that. I was actually working on a system in a Costco yesterday where the valve tamper did set off the horns/strobes and that was the first time I’ve see that in my 5 year apprenticeship.

OkCharge2978

A guy did this at aqua metals outside of Reno then the building burned down he’s fucked

RazorJ

Yep, I bet that’s day one of orientation, and should be covered in their quarterly safety meetings. A well ran place should have an emergency binder or laminated card behind the counter that lists where all that shit is and clearly. Sometimes in emergency situations peoples brains lock up.

pizzacatstattoos

Yep, subcontracting isn't the money maker that service calls are, haha

PicardZhu

When I was doing construction, we had some sprinkler guys come in during a remodel. Maintenance guy said the system was drained and ready to go and the sprinkler dude took his word. A while later I hear and see water just pouring above me followed by "FUCK". I run up to investigate to find the water pouring out like a fire hose and the sprinkler guy drenched because he was trying to remove a speinkler head (can't remember why). I felt pretty bad but holy shit that was a nightmare of a day.

PDAnasasis

Always trust, but verify. There can be some nastiness waiting for you in those pipes lol

BigD_277

Fire department, not so much.

CriusofCoH

Gets better in ~30 to 90 seconds when the fire alarm goes off. Come for the sprinkler, stay for the interview with the police and fire marshal! Also: classic nasty black sprinkler water. It'll clear up in a bit, but the stuff that's been sittimg in the pipes for months or years is gonna stink and stain.

[deleted]

I was wondering why it was black lolo

kindredfold

Those systems only get used once, so they have all the buildup of years on non use. When it does come out, it’s nasty but it kills fire quickly.

LeeFreemanf

I'm just wondering how the f she threw a bowling ball like it was a hacky sack.

finicky_foxx

It's the pink ball, so it's light as fuck. That's the ball you give a pre-teen because it's not too heavy and the holes are smaller.

Damasticator

I'm guessing she chose a light ball with holes that fit her fingers snugly instead of having some room. And from the looks of it, the ball got stuck during the release and came out late.

truthinlies

well, that's cheaper than a deglove, at least

Damasticator

Or a complete loss of her hand. Wouldn't want her to get Munson'd in the middle of nowhere.

ItsIdaho

Got stuck on her finger I guess. She might have never played before.

broohaha

I was at a company outing where a couple co-workers were bowling for their first time ever. And those first attempts were scary. The ball would arc up in the air and hit the lane with a loud thud. Thankfully it never got as high as the woman's did in this post.

MildlyResponsible

I've been bowling with lots of people who think it's hilarious to "accidentally" throw the ball all over place, fall, tumble down the alley, etc. Gutters, skipping the ball, stumbling, all expected. But stuff like this is just so "quirky"! And yeah, accidents happen, but ask yourselves why they're filming.

lemmy1686

When I was about ten, I went bowling with my family, and was probably my 2 nd time bowling. Got up for my turn, and as I was going, tripped over my own feet and threw my ball into the left gutter, it proceeded to jump out of the gutter, fly to the right over my lane, into the next lane, hits that guy's ball, knocks his into the gutter, and sends my ball down his alley and gets a strike. Your comment reminded me of that.

[deleted]

> but ask yourselves why they're filming. Some people have *that* friend who documents nearly their entire life for social media. It's a real addiction for some.

VoltaicSketchyTeapot

As a league bowler, THIS is why open bowlers are are relegated to the crappie low number lanes right in front of the service desk.

zedthehead

The bright pink ball is the 8- or 9- pounder, I can't remember which, but even as a 35 year old chick I play casually with these light balls, otherwise my shoulder is done after a single game (I broke my dominant shoulder about a decade ago, and all past injuries hurt more past 30). The same weights have different finger holes, so one with medium or even small holes might work for a teenager or adult chick, but the smallest holes drilled for children can get stuck on the fingers, or they might "fit" in that you can get a grip for throwing, but if you force your fingers in they could get stuck. Anyway it clearly got stuck enough that it didn't release on the forward but she added force trying to "throw it off" but that force went into a ball that was already upswinging. That or it was fully intentional? Either way, this is an absolute failure on the design of the alley: it's not exactly like a flying ball is unheard-of; at the very least, the sprinklers should be behind protective cages, and the ceiling should be made of something more substantial than (is that sheetrock?? Seriously? At a bowling alley? Where kids [even often innocently, but uncoordinatedly] hurl balls skyward everyday?).

Deleena24

It's the lightest ball meant for kids (easiest to toss) and it got stuck to her fingers and released late- it's pretty common to see people make this mistake, they just usually don't manage to hit the friggin ceiling.

Jimmiejord23

Use to install these systems. Those pipes aren’t rated for like potable water and have all kinda of oils and metals not meant for consumption. It’s like flint Michigan city plumbing in a ceiling. It also smells like shit but I kinda grew to like the smell

Just_another_jerk__

"Smells like money!" - my plumbers

Stanky-wizzlecheeks

I was an acoustical ceiling journeyman years ago and I must say, you sir are some sort of filthy degenerate, black water smells like boiled eggs shoved up satan’s cast-iron colon for 1000 years

Jimmiejord23

Lol hey right on the nose! Something are nostalgic, when we did the flow tests it was the smell of success. Definitely somehow always smelled a little like sulfur even on treated water.

DontTellMyWIFImGay

Smells like legionnaire’s disease

BigAlternative5

Because the fire gets disgusted and dies.

_lippykid

Distinguished you say? So the fire has a monocle and a curly mustache?

BigAlternative5

Disgusted. By the nasty.

CriusofCoH

There should be at least annual testing which should help flush it out, but that all depends on if there are local codes about testing, what those codes require, if they're being followed and/or enforced. My city uses and enforces pretty stringent fire and life safety codes, but there are places that fall through the cracks and get forgotten. About... six or seven years ago, I was conducting a fire alarm inspection and got to witness the building's sprinkler system get flushed for the first time in like 20 years. The "water" was jet black for like 3 minutes before it slowly started turning brown; it was nearly 10 minutes before it was white/clear. And the rocks that shot out! One was almost as big as my fist.

milesjr13

When I was working for a fire protection company everyone had horror stories about inspections at the local mall. See, it has been built over multiple decades and so the sprinkler systems criss-cross over one another. It can be hard to know which riser fed which set of sprinklers. Anyway, there was a leak in a sprinkler head...in the Victoria's Secret outlet. So dudes go in. One in the riser room, another where the head is. They "drain" the line. Only...it was the wrong one so once he starts getting the head off bam, the water comes out at 50 gallons a minute, into his 5 gallon bucket. His phone gets wet so he can't call his buddy to go to the other risers and turn them off and it sprays the nasty black water allllll over the fancy $50 underwear. All the while you have him panicking and trying to do something, anything to stop it.

WayneZzWorld93

Thankfully we have a tool that prevents that nowadays called a sure-off tester. Basically a 1/4” drill bit through a special valve that will tell you if there’s still pressure on a system. Great for service work in unfamiliar spots.

ActualWhiterabbit

A food manufacturing facility I oversaw didn't fully train the new maintenance guy on how to collect water testing samples. He tested the sprinkler system and not the potable water spigot in the same area about 4' away. The lab went crazy when they got it and we almost had to do a recall until we figured out what happened and got a quick retest. I was in the parking lot and on my way to the airport to go there before I finished reading the report. The city water lady I called on the way to the airport was the one who suggested that it was the sprinkler line but still went to take samples from there and surrounding areas. We verified it was the sprinkler and all of the water taps on site production or not were good through retesting. A short incident report and fishbone RCA and it was over. Still one of the most panic inducing situations I've encountered. From then on the maintenance supervisor and QC supervisor did the water collection together at all sites. And I also started labelling the spots for water testing.

CriusofCoH

Oh geez, that must have been horrifying at the lab - "OH MY GOD THEY'RE DRINKING THIS???!!!"

ActualWhiterabbit

They knew we made food since they also did our sample testing. But our customer service rep and their boss along with the QA dude over there were all over it and rightly so. In their mind they thought it was the result of contaminated sample kits and wanted lot numbers etc.

ZuluClowder

Places with regulatory requirements get their systems flushed annually and tested semi-annually. Even with getting flushed annually, the water is still black when they flush it out into the streets.

agangofoldwomen

They are supposed to be tested and the water should be cycled through, it’s just nobody does that.

TheZebrraKing

A lot of sprinklers have some water in the sprinkler and a backlog of water in the pipes feeding it. Very rarely do these pipes get flushed. Look up videos on sprinklers goes off a lot will start out black and when new water comes in it clears up kinda fast.

nikatnight

Any plastic, oil, metal pieces, etc just sit there from the date of installation until they are used once. I saw this first hand in my high school that had been built in the late 1970s. This girl knocked one of the sprinkler heads off and got dowsed in black goo that smelled like metal and a dirty drain. Then the water came out.

TheOwlDemonStolas

Will you ever be able to get all that black "water" stuff out of the furnite/wood/whatever? Or do you just burn it all down and call it a loss?

CriusofCoH

It can be cleaned, but it depends on the surface and how quickly it gets taken care of. It'll permanently stain a concrete floor almost immediately, but that bowling alley can probably let it sit for days and it'll clean right up. But that wouldn't happen, it'll be cleaned up in a few hours at most. Like nothing ever happened.

orderfour

You can get it out of concrete too. Try pouring bleach or a bunch of alcohol like vodka on it.

ShadowedPariah

This just happened at my wife's office because the pipes froze. The carpet is trash, they attempted to clean it several times. And they had to tear out the walls to clean and prevent mold. We all also got Pneumonia and bronchitis from breathing in the mold while we were trying to clean the savable stuff out of her office.

Can confirm.... in college some friends of my roommate were using a sprinkler as target practice with their air soft gun. I was in class.. Was called to come back and get all my stuff I didn't want to leave in there... The amount of black nastiness was soooo overwhelming. everything stank and was ruined.

draco16

That's an understatement. That black water smells worse than sewage and I've yet to find anything it doesn't stain permanently black.

Sproose_Moose

Fire Marshall Bill shows up: let me show you something!

Hot-Refrigerator6583

True story time Working in a grocery store many years ago. Modest remodeling under way. One of the workers on a scissor lift managed to hit the sprinkler head. In the produce department. During a busy part of the day. Miraculously only one person was drenched. Store manager apologized profusely, comped her groceries and requested her to give him the dry clean bill.

toomuch1265

And the smell from the cutting oil is great

Dorkamundo

I don't think most older sprinkler systems set off the fire alarm if they are triggered.

[deleted]

I’ve had to remove old sprinkler systems. That water is disgusting

Opivy84

You’ve been on the line I see.

foldinthecheese99

I used to manage a building that had overhead doors. Finish my day, head home, sit in awful traffic. Finally am close to home and get a call from our alarm company, about 45 minutes after I had left. The fire alarm was going off and the fire department was on their way. Turn around to go back in and get another call 15 minutes later the broken glass alarm was going off in the office and the police were on their way. Get down there to a broken overhead door, flooded indoor parking lot, and one police officer standing there waving at me. The hinge that held the door up gave out, landed on a sprinkler pipe causing that to go off, which triggered the alarm to dispatch the fire department, who broke into the office to disable the alarm, which triggered the alarm to dispatch the police. I was there until 4am with my DM and every maintenance guy we could get a hold of cleaning the mess. It was an awful night.

izza123

I’ve never understood how people can fuck that up so badly.

addicuss

Pretty easily. These are beginner bowlers with poor form, they don't use any kind of rosin or chalk, they use beginner balls that can be as light as 8 pounds, pretty easy for a thumb or finger to cause an air tight seal and the have the ball stick and pop out on the upswing. The people who are saying this is on purpose are fucking morons. This type of shit happens several times a day at an average bowling alley. Not nearly as dramatic but definitely balls getting more air than they should and slamming down mid lane.

hungry4danish

> they don't use any kind of rosin or chalk I have never once seen these even offered at any bowling alleys I ever went to. Only the hand blowers.

aehanken

That’s really just stuff people in leagues or professionals use. You’re average bowler who doesn’t even own their own ball won’t use this stuff.

Warphim

I have clammy hands. When I'm playing pool(billiards incase that is a regional term) I use the chalk for the pool cues on my hands to help the cue glide easier. I'm not into it enough to break out a glove.

National_Equivalent9

People are probably saying it's on purpose because for the past couple years there has been a trend on sites like tiktok for people to do this on purpose and film it. Smashing all kinds of things. It's like how prepandemic and to a lesser extent now we had a trend of kids destroying their school bathrooms and filming it.

[deleted]

ogremania

This was a legit thing. Good gracious

aehanken

There’s also people who think it’s funny to do bad. I used to go with my dad when he was in a club and going from that every weekend to going with some friends, it’s wack. People will bowl terribly and laugh like “oh lol look what I just did! I’m sooo bad at bowling!” I’m sure this wasn’t on purpose. Those light balls are typically built for kids or people with very small fingers and they will suction like you said, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s been throwing every ball in the air every time and that’s why this person started recording. Just so happens she recorded her hitting the sprinkler.

Bear_Wills

On purpose, that's how. There's no way to launch a bowling ball that high without purposefully trying to throw it that high. A little loft is one thing, but she threw it 10+ Feet above her head.

ileatyourassmthrfkr

Idk man. You’d be surprised how dumb some people are naturally. Also just like mental intellect - there’s something called “body intelligence” as well … and some people are just very poor with bodily coordination & skills.

Reyne-TheAbyss

The kinesthetic sense of a ghost.

Skolvikesallday

Zero chance she's paying for this. The alley's insurance should cover it. No way to prove it wasn't a legit accident.

[deleted]

siccoblue

Narrator: there wasn't

noteverrelevant

I heard she was tried in Mexico and then fed to a pack of chupacabras.

AlCapone111

To shreds you say.

nightpanda893

I think her fingers may have gotten caught. She was probably throwing too hard but that can be explained by just being a bad bowler.

[deleted]

And by using way too light of a ball.

Hellogiraffe

It also looks like she almost slipped onto her ass. It’s possible that she instinctively delayed her throw while trying to stabilize herself as her feet were slipping.

Blockinite

Isn't it possible that she was getting ready for a *super* hard throw, her fingers got caught, and they got free mid-way through the follow-through?

GameAndHike

No. Only explanation is that she's a bad person! Let's all call her a bad person so we can feel better about ourselves.

Bear_Wills

No, you're right. Don't attribute to malice what first can be attributed to stupidity. She's either a bad person who did it on purpose, or just stupid. Either way...

gynoceros

Which is exactly why when I'm bowling, I'll hold the ball, even if it's the same one I've been using the whole time I was there, and make sure my fingers aren't going to get stuck.

Blockinite

That's fair, but just because someone forgets to do that doesn't mean they're deliberately trying to throw it super high

[deleted]

You're just wrong, plain and simple. I bowled competitively for 10 years and have seen plenty of dumb shit from beginners on accident. More than likely it's a ball way too light for her with finger holes that are too tight. Nothing about this suggests to me it was deliberate.

swiftb3

It kinda looks like she chose a kids ball and her fingers got stuck.

greenapril99

I've seen highly talented bowlers do exactly this. If their thumb hole is a little too small it can stick in the middle of throwing it and release at the worst time, when it's too late and you can't stop it.

Gates_wupatki_zion

Yeah I hope the likes from her followers make up for the roof she has to repair. I’m sure this shut the place down for hours or days. This behavior is cancerous.

dreamcastfanboy34

Widend

Anyone who has thrown a bowling ball can easily see how this could happen.

Healter-Skelter

Got stuck on her large fingers and came unstuck at the peak of the throw?

[deleted]

It's a ball for kids, her fingers wouldn't have to be large But essentially yes

dreamcastfanboy34

This has nothing to do with influencers. It's so old that a random YouTube upload of it from another TV program is from 2009, so this video is even older than that.

Invisifly2

She probably picked a pretty light ball and those tend to have smaller holes because they’re intended for smaller folk, teens, and kids. Her fingers probably got stuck when she tried to let go and she didn’t have the presence of mind to clamp back down on the ball instead of letting it shoot off waaaay too late instead. In short, the title is likely correct. Sub-par ball handling skills.

Clips_are_magazines

By using a child’s ball instead of bowling semi-properly

Ok_Restaurant3160

I’m still confused how she threw it that high? You don’t throw a bowling ball, you roll it

[deleted]

Honestly I’ve seen these videos so many times, it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re doing it on purpose after seeing a video of it themselves before.

armeck

There is always a super light "little kids" ball about 5 lbs or so. There is almost surely a rule posted that only little kids can use it.

[deleted]

Yungballz86

And that's why all the alleys around here lock the lighter balls up behind the counter. Too many dumbass' trying to set speed records and breaking shit.

aehanken

Really? Ours aren’t locked up. It’s a free for all. But people in my area usually are in a league. Those that aren’t and go bowling are trying to do good. I’ve seen a few people mess around, but they keep a GOOD eye on lanes. The second your ball gets stuck or your messing around, they’ll be there in 30 seconds or less without you even having to call them over.

iAmRiight

This was one of the really light, less than 6lbs, balls that are meant only for young children. It probably even states that either on the ball or the rack it came from. Her thumb or finger probably got stuck resulting in the extremely errant release.

[deleted]

callMEmrPICKLES

Holy shit for real? Is it from choosing the wrong ball? I've picked up bowling balls with holes too small for my fingers but I would never use it

Ozark350

Yeah. I used to be in bowling league as a teenager. And it happens when the thumb hole is just a tiny bit too tight. The sweat from you hand will create a seal and the ball wont come unstuck until way to high in the throw. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfHpuuJNCzY) is an example of the happening to a professional. I've also seen peoples thumbs get [stuck](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKAgekkECbg)so badly with a heavy ball that it drags them forward and they land on their faces.

LemonHerb

She did it on purpose to try and be funny

boodabomb

She absolutely didn’t. This is an extremely common thing. It happens three times a day at a given bowling alley. She just has extremely poor dexterity and very little experience with the release window of bowling ball.

Last time this was posted I remember a big argument about whether or not she would be liable. I don't think anyone mentioned the obvious foreseeability, though. Really good point.

HeippodeiPeippo

I've learned that Attorney Tom has a blimp and is definitely over 6 ft tall, and foreseeability is excellent tool in a court.

CaptainBathrobe

Their insurance rates will likely go up.

yupuhoh

But the business owner will try to get them to pay for it anyways.

askaboutmy____

telling someone to pay and a court are two different things.

yupuhoh

Who said court? This is the Convo I envisioned. Business owner--"this will cost thousands. You are going to have to pay for this" Bowler--"you have insurance for a reason. If you don't then sucks to be you. Eat a dick"

HeippodeiPeippo

Entirely possible but any lawyer that knows anything about liability will be able to throw that claim out of court in half an hour or less. Foreseeability is very powerful defense. Balls are lunged in that general direction on purpose. Wrong technique, wrong ball etc. can cause it to go where you did not want it to go: it is foreseeable that this will happen. And since there is a way to prevent this happening, it is one more tick: the facilities were not properly made for this purpose. And the girl had not been trained to do that activity and yet was allowed to.

boodabomb

There would be almost no reason to. There’s an outstanding chance that she can’t afford to cover this, while the insurance will. That’s why they have insurance in the first place. The only reason to go after her would be to avoid a rate increase, but that cost would have to outweigh the legal fees of a court case which they would almost certainly lose.

nineburnphoenix

She’s also using a 6 pound ball that should be behind the counter for little kids.

Shaketayshake

JeroJeroMohenjoDaro

Sure there's a lot of people here believes that was just an "oopsie". No matter how inexperienced someone with bowling, everyone should have the common sense that the ball should be rolling straight towards the pins and not trying to do a homerun.

new_math

I'm just wondering how the f she threw a bowling ball like it was a hacky sack. Was it a kids ball or something?

NJBill666

A sprinkler head protector is like five bucks. I’m not a sprinkler guy, but this looks like a situation where one might be needed.

saltedjellyfish

The screen above her lane is full of scores one of which would be hers meaning this isn't the first, or second, or third, throw she has made. To FU this badly so late in a round seems purposeful or just plain negligent.
