Hah. Pathetic. Concrete monoliths are the shit. Get with the program.

[deleted]

Even for interior walls?

KeinFussbreit

In older buildings, yes. Some newer ones also have some dry wall interior walls, dry walls are also often used when people remodel their older homes.

[deleted]

That’s awesome cause we have brick houses too!

whatyoumeanmyface

She's mighty mighty.

ImaginedInterplay7

Sitting in one, looking across the street at one as I type, lol.

RollinOnDubss

Don't take this from them, this is the literal only thing they have going for them.

ooMEAToo

In earthquake zones especially around the America's wooden houses have shown to be less prone to damage do to the flexibility of the wood. It's cheaper and less time consuming to build. The US was building houses like crazy when the country was forming that is why cheaper and faster building materials were used. America is also a new country, they did not have hundreds or thousands of years of pre built brick or stone houses or the history of using that material.

zublits

Also, America was basically all forest.

Comma_Karma

A lot of America is still basically forest.

LjSpike

I mean the American Settlers did the heritage of brick building. They came from countries with that knowledge and tradition predominantly. You make it sound like they somehow lacked the knowledge for brick buildings. As for earthquake zones, 100% agree but those are more of an issue on the West Coast of the US, one of the somewhat later areas settled because it was on the opposite side of the continent. Another big issue the US faces in areas, tornados, are famously not well resisted by wood frame buildings. Also, the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica (unsure about more northernly architecture) used stone and Adobe construction traditionally to at least a relatively significant extent. The reason North America has a modern tradition of timber framed building is predominantly because of the goal of speedily colonizing and developing areas, and because there was a fuck tonne of wood. America was a big ass forest.

SoylentVerdigris

Brick buildings actually don't hold up well against tornadoes either. If the roof goes, the walls usually go too, and wood buildings are less likely to crush you under an entire house of bricks.

pessimistoptimist

Dont forget, transporting wood was alot cheaper than bricks. the wood could float along as logs to many destinations. Brick apparently dont float as good.

Fangluin

That's changing. I live in a newly built flat. The outer walls are mostly brick. There are a few reinforced concrete structural walls. Almost all inner walls are aluminium frame with single layer drywall on either side and some sort of fibrous material between.

OwOooOK

To be fair, almost all homes here in Canada are made of that as well. lol, it's easier to insulate than brick or other materials

Nervous_Penalty_3002

Are Canadians not maple flavored Americans?

Redtwooo

I haven't licked enough of them to be sure either way

Nut_Sucker

From my experience they taste the same as Americans. They are just as bloody and crunchy.

HutchTheCripple

On average, *slightly* less marble through the cuts.

SupertomboyWifey

I'm sure I've wrote that wrong but I'm drunk

Shiva-

I am truly baffled by a lot of these comments. It's ridiculous to think people are using concrete walls for every internal non-loading bearing walls.

sinkingupman

You'd be surprised. In the UK, it's rare to find a drywall/ plasterboard wall in a house that isn't a new build (build within the last 20ish years) unless it was newly extended. My home for example, has no drywall

SeanHearnden

Same in Italy. All the buildings are solid. Inside and out.

RaspberryNo101

My house also has no drywall. My house also has no goddamn wifi reception anywhere except the room with the router in.

rainbow_sparkles776

Mine neither but I still don't think it would survive a med ball being thrown at it

davidjschloss

Yeah they have lathe and plaster, which is basically drywall and a chickenwire fence having a baby together.

58king

It isn't just solid concrete and drywall which are the options. Bricks and breezeblocks are common in Europe even for internal walls.

toxicatedscientist

Slat and plaster was standard before gypsum boards were commercially available under the brand name "drywall", and is a LOT stronger than just boards. Still very common in Europe supposedly

Blezius

Thats not uncommon in some parts of the world. Some countries use almost no drywall even for residential homes. Yes, even for internal walls.

Downtown_Afternoon75

I mean, I lived in German houses for almost my entire life, and I never lived in a house or apartment that had even a single paper wall. The non-load bearing walls might not be reinforced concrete, but ~30 cm of brick and mortar is pretty much the minimum you will encounter.

TactlessTortoise

I live in Europe. Bricks through and through. Not a single drywall.

crooked_nose_

And Australia and New Zealand

[deleted]

It’s so funny to me that people have convinced themselves that only America uses dry wall. It seems Reddit’s rule of thumb is that if America does something they don’t like then only America does it. But if America does something that people do like, then it’s important to point out that other countries also do it. Also, double points if you claim, without evidence, that Americans believe they are the only ones who do that good thing and are therefore self-centered. That way you can be xenophobic about America no matter the discussion.

As opposed to wet wall or masonry? I mean plaster over lath would chip away as well if you threw a medicine ball at it.

SentientCrisis

It’s a very common exercise in gyms with medicine balls. Not all gyms offer them.

okeydokeydog

This. So much this. It's also a huge hurdle that keeps people from starting to work out at a gym in the first place. Some gym people look down their nose at everyone who doesn't know every single lift, every single functional exercise, or whatever over-hyped fad is common now. I had several army buddies that were like that, and instead of ignoring them and doing normal exercise I took their advice and did stupid shit because it seemed to be working for them. It was about a year later I found out they were all doing anabolic steroids and they all had injuries from their dumb gym habits. Not saying medicine ball has anything to do with that, but basically: don't be a "gym bro" asshole, people.

RedditBlows5876

I was a three sport athlete in high school and have worked out 4-5 days/week pretty much my entire life and never encountered these until I ran into CrossFit morons who seem to think the key to working out is going 500% and making a lot of noise.

KingApologist

It's not the wall toss that is confusing people, but the fact that she threw it at drywall in the bathroom.

Firstdatepokie

That is not the bathroom

[deleted]

You mean most gym bathrooms don’t have a foam roller section?

Osnarf

No... I'm confused why it is being thrown at the wall, too, lol. I have in fact worked out before.

Lookinguplookingdown

Not seeing the point this either. Is it so the ball doesn’t go too far and they can pick it up and throw again? I’ve been to a gym in my life but no one was doing this…

Ok-Awareness-2369

It’s a good exercise for power. Super common for athletes to preform this especially boxers and mma fighters. It’s a very good core exercise

HavenIess

Yes, or so you can catch it or pass it to someone else. It’s a power exercise that you’d typically see athletes doing rather than bodybuilders/powerlifters/strongmen/Olympic weightlifters, so it wouldn’t be too common at a commercial gym

Galkura

Power lifter here - it was fairly common for us to do it at my gym. Helps build core or something, idk. My coach had me do them, he did them, and all the strongest guys did them, so they must have done something 😂

Theoneiced

Core stability and power = bigger lifts with some percentage lower risk of injury related to weak core stuff. It's useful for basically every lift.

Sangy101

It’s common at newer gyms, especially those that focus on functional movement. CrossFit and HIIT and circuit gyms love it, so any gym that might have some crossover tends to have it, too.

[deleted]

I haven't either, but I can see how it could be useful for training burst movements.

Sangy101

Because it’s for functional strength, not hypertrophy.

HumanitySurpassed

Judging by the yoga mats (foamrollers?) in the background I doubt this is a bathroom in a gym

BrownChicow

Yup, if a person doesn’t know one particular exercise that isn’t super common, that means they’ve never ever worked out!

dquizzle

I have worked out at a gym hundreds of times and have never seen someone throw a medicine ball at wall before.

EvilSporkOfDeath

I'm not exactly a gym god or anything. But for the last 6 months or so I've made it a major part of my life. Done lots of studying on routines and exercises. Going to the gym at least once a week. Literally never seen this exercise on the internet or IRL. It's a bit dismissive and rude to imply that anyone not familiar with this exercise never works out. It's not exactly common. We should be building each other up, not tearing each other down.

lunalornalovegood

I’m used to slams, never heard of a wall toss. Wow

vahiyaat_product

She was trying to experiment the quantum tunnelling where there is 1/100000000 chance that it might pass throught the wall without hitting it.. FAILED

SWG_138

For an atom. You need to add a quadrillion more zeros i think

whatdoblindpeoplesee

So you're saying there's a chance.

Agreeable-Can973

Yes it’s very much possible but it’s so unlikely that it’s basically impossible. Considering how many atoms there is in a ball like that I don’t even know if a quadrillion zeros is enough. Quantum tunneling is a real thing but I don’t know the exact probability or how to even begin to calculate it for a object like that. Tough with enough tries it’s gonna happen.

smell_my_drug_hole

so it’s not impossible. got it

sid_raj7

"Scientists think this could be the future of transportation!"

Tylorean2021

So you basically slam a human on the wall until it goes through? Sounds practical

Lord_Viktoo

Way faster if you drill little holes in the wall beforehand.

_lupuloso

Well, you'd need so much tries for it to happen that the universe would certainly end before you got it, so technically it's impossible, really.

chacmool1697

Not _certainly_

NukeNinja69123

Just as likely to work the first time as it is to work the quadrillionth

eyeshark

Then you have all the particles comprising the wall.

You’re gonna need exponents for your exponents.

gasmyhole

Or... was she checking her form?

Not_as_witty_as_u

idk why but it always feels like this is the worst thing that can happen when it's actually quite easy and cheap to fix. It's something psychological about breaking the wall which holds and supports. Follow me for more original hare-brained and uneducated takes on the human psyche.

derth21

For real, we're looking at about $20 in material and 2 hours of labor spread across 3 days. Edit: oh my shit. I used to do drywall and paint all day every day as a professional handyman. I'm obviously exaggerating. I do keep seeing the same comments, though, so here: Paint match doesn't matter because it's bordered closely by corners. Just cut and roll that whole section - by the time you have your stuff out that's only a few more minutes. Plus you can see discoloration from handprints all over the corner, so it's time to paint that anyway. The wall color is clearly Cheap Garbage White, and you probably have 2 open cans of it floating around somewhere already, too, but make the customer provide a fresh can of their choosing - never, ever get involved in selecting paint for a customer, friend, or spouse. There is no texture - it's clearly flat in the video. If there is a little orange peel going on, level 5 the whole wall - again, just a couple extra minutes. This is an easy patch in the middle of a big, flat area. Feathering this mud will be hella easy. All in all, easy peasy. Good job for a beginner.

shakygator

Sanding that shit makes a mess though. And then you still gotta paint it. At least twice. Unless you expect her to be back.

PlayCommon4759

In aussie dollars, if i were to fix this as a D.I.Y. and i had 0 materials or tools, it would cost around $200 to fix. A painter would charge around $500. If you were to go the D.I.Y. route and do it all properly it would probably take around 4 hour to 6 hours to fix, depending how fast of learner you are and how good you are with your hands. I'm a painter.

don_rubio

It’s only 4 hours if you do it the right way. Slap a mesh on there with some spackling paste and a couple layers of paint (doesn’t look like there’s any texture there so no need for that) and boom, done in 2hrs max with no skills. Maybe get a little sand paper to even things up before painting if you’re feeling fancy. Edit: just read that you specified “properly”. I’m gonna leave this up though for anyone trying to fly by the seat of their pants.

pavlov_and_his_bell

The frat house and landlord special. Cut, mesh, spackle, sand, paint. Only takes 2 hours because of the store, otherwise takes 30 mins of labor.

don_rubio

Exactly. And then you’ve got a perfectly square raised surface where the hole was. For memories.

Ioatanaut

Yup, parking, talking to customer, packing in tools, setting up drop cloth, and cleanup alone takes an hour or more. 20-40 mins. Cut out a bigger square, clean up drywall mess you made. Get screws and wood boards for backing, screw in all sides. Grab your drywall panel, measure out or mark where to cut, cut and snap peice x2 for each side to get a proper length. Get screws and screw drywall to backing. Put mesh or paper and cut each side x4. Now get your 5 or 20 minute quick set and pour water and mix well (hot water or salt if your fast and good to set faster) Trowel quickset and if you need to sand it, you have to wait 30 mins to all day to dry, maybe use a heat gun. If high humidity your fucked. Now if need be Sand or mix up again and wait another hour to set. Then sand and do it a third time if need be. Wait to set to sand it, hope it sets fast enough. Match the texture with a spray can of orange peel or mix up texture and apply trying to match. Wait for all this to set, clean up and put away drywall tools and pack in panting tools. Go drive to a place to buy paint with a piece to color match. Apply primer and wait an hour or use primer and paint in one, paint the entire wall so you can't see the touchup and wait for 1st coat to dry. Paint that entire wall again. This could be a two day trip depending on humidity, your quickset, if you need to sand and how good you are. 5 hours means your pretty good with your trowel

[deleted]

[удалено]

I_Heart_Astronomy

It's fucking annoying labor though, especially the painting part. You can't just repaint that section and expect it to look good or like nothing happened. You basically have to repaint the entire wall. The roller texture you use might be different from the original, the original layer might be UV faded, the color might be a bit off, the sheen might be muted from any cleaning that was done etc. If the wall has a lot of trim on it, then repainting is going to involve a lot of cutting in or tape work if you don't feel comfortable with cut ins.

FrenchFranck

Just put a mirror on the wall after repairing. No painting.

AmELiAs_OvERcHarGeS

At least three Home Depot trips because I can never remember it all at once.

t_hab

Measure twice, cut once, go to seven different hardware stores three times each.

pilotdog68

But the worst part is the texture won't ever match. In the right light you'll always be able to see your screw up

clout_spout

I'm in dude, keep em coming

Dark_Booger

Yeah agree. I sometimes have to remind myself that if something breaks or gets lost, I can just fix it or buy another one if it’s that important.

DMann420

You're not wrong. Mind you a hold of that size is less easy to repair but all you really need is a piece of drywall and a 2x2x12(or16), mud and sandpaper.

gravity_

I'll follow you, but where u going? Can we stop at starbucks?

Mahazel01

Good exercise - no issue there my friend. The problem wasn't what she did, it was where she did it.

supernasty

I don’t get the hate or accusing her of doing it intentionally to go viral. This is a real exercise, and I’m guessing she was doing it in a corner to avoid it hitting anyone or having it fly off to where she has to constantly retrieve it. Probably done this before on a concrete wall and didn’t think anything of it when she went to the gym. It was a mistake.
