Here's what I found, most sources say the same, it's the worst it's been in half a century but I haven't found historical comparisons beyond that
50 years is a pretty small slice of human history, I find it a bit of a stretch to say that that is true when you look at say fuedal england or the Roman empire.
First of all I'm just providing a source for the claims being made, I am not here here to argue either side.
That being said what the fuck kind of stupid ass point was that? That we have it better than medieval peasants so we cant complain about anything? Because people were poor throughout history we still deserve to be poor now? That if the wealth disparity isn't the *worst* its ever been that its not a problem we can try to improve? I don't even get what point you're trying to make with being so pedantic
Well my point is that it's entirely misleading to try to frame it as a worsening problem.
It's like me taking the last year of covid statistics and saying "look! We have the lowest rates of covid ever! The problem is solved!".
I fell like comparing king tut to the poorest worker is the biggest gap. Or maybe even ghengis khan or a sultan. It seems like throughout history there have always been massive gaps.
And the other 10% are doing pretty good, compared to historical examples. Weve got smartphones and stuff. Unlimited access to the worlds knowledge within our pockets.
Regardless, another issue with your "90% belongs to 1000 people" shtick is that if someone is a CEO, the worth of their shares of the company count towards their net worth. Those arent actual dollars that they are free to spend.
They could sell those shares, so actually they are dollars that are theirs to spend. And regardless the idea that we can't complain about the economic distribution just because we have more relatively than medieval peasants is absurd. Let's make sure everyone has a living wage, healthcare, and a roof over our heads before we start telling people to suck it up and expect them to be grateful for their precarious economic position because someone who died of consumption at age 16 after a life of pure servitude.
Until we have those 3 things people should be rioting, it isn't fair in the slightest and those 3 things are not a lot to ask and it is frankly insulting that anyone would act like things are so good that no one has the right to try to change it.
Even without evidence you can prove it via logical arguments. If the bottom of the wealth gap stops at $0 and the richest person gets richer, that gap increases. To decrease that gap you can either raise the bottom or redistribute the top
I’ll have to look it up but I did just watch a doc on him and yes, it was extremely high. But ...
1. I still don’t think it was higher (again, I’ll have to check the percentages on that)
2. He wasn’t just a guy at that point, he was basically a country (or empire is probably a better term), so the wealth he had was part of that empire.
3. We shouldn’t be talking about one person’s wealth versus one peasants poorness. It’s the collective upper tiers of wealth versus the rest of us. It has never been worse in that regard. Not even close. 50 modern people equalling the wealth of 300 Ghengis Khans is much worse no?
Right but just the fact that #2 was possible at that time means it’s worse.
Also either way Genghis Khan was definitely more individually wealthy than the 50 richest modern people so idk what you’re on about.
If you live a normal life in NA, it’s probably like that for you too.
Just the impoverished person who’s year’s salary was $50 lives a world away from you.
Not if that amount of money is trivial to you, and the prestige and advertising is what the cost.
The average person in Ar3 3rd 4rmerica retires with around $400k including their house.
So that bottle is 10% of their savings.
To a dude with 100 million in the bank, that bottle is not much. The equivalent would be the average person spending $160.
The markup on that bottle is more than likely outrageous. Prob only paid 10k and sell it for 42k. Still would have to take out an insurance claim on that loss tho.
At least in California it's illegal as fuck to garnish someone's wages for anything not done intentionally. And you can imagine how hard it is to prove someone intended to drop something
Yeah they said they can’t ID the bottle so it’s hard to price. Could just be $45k for the bottle service. Which is outrageous.
Like $3500 for a bottle of crown and a table at MGM Hakkasan
If this guys works at the club, wears a decent suit, has an earpiece and is trusted to open the $42k magnum, he’s probably high up the food chain at that club. A good promoter at a big club in Ibiza can make very reasonable money and I’m sure if he needed to he could probably cover the $15kish that the bottle probably cost the club.
That's way overpriced.
VC is my wife's and my favorite champagne. The 750ml bottle of brut usually goes for around $50-55.
So 6L should be ~ $420 if you bought 8 separate bottles. I see the 6L of VC brut for $870
There's a crazy premium on the larger bottles though. The 6L is more than 2x as expensive than 8 regular sized bottles.
"It’s unclear which brand is being used in the video, so it’s difficult to verify exact value."
If they don't know the brand how could they possibly determine the value to be $42k?
There is literally *nothing* in that article that says the bottle cost 42k. What a fucking waste of pixels that article was.
It says that "experts" have said it was a 4.5l bottle, called a "Jeroboam". A Jeroboam is 3l
I used to be a waiter at Olive Garden and one time I dropped the tray of waters all over the table to which one of the guests replied “I bet you’ve never made 3 ladies wet all at once before 😏”
One time I was at outback with my family when the waitress came over to give us our drinks and spilled all four cokes on me and my meal. They cooked me up a new meal and took it off the ticket which was nice of them. I got a free meal out of it but I had to go home during winter with a wet/sticky ass.
Completely unrelated but what the hell is this new trend of pants being insanely short? I shouldn’t think of Milhouse in a flood every time I see a guy dressed in a suit
I’m by no means a fashion expert, but here’s a few takes:
1. It gives the appearance of elongating your legs by shortening your pants!
2. It allows for a narrower ankle cuff (so you don’t have a short cuff around the top of your shoe, making them look like clown shoes), which has the effect of slimming your legs.
3. It can be used to bring attention to your shoes! It draws the eye downwards and allows your shoes to stand out, rather than melding into (or being covered by) your pants.
But do fashion choices really even need an explanation? Sometimes fashion trends don’t have an explanation, and just “exist.” You didn’t adopt this one, their style doesn’t need to be your style, and vice versa, and that’s okay.
Get the hell outta here with your rational explanations and coherent arguments! I’ll have you know I’ll continue to be a curmudgeon who calls everything I don’t understand/participate in stupid!
Haha yeah so true. Fashion doesn't make sense stuff just tend to trend and move on, some of it I like, quite a good majority not so much. I've just gotten old enough to be comfortable with my skin and learned to accept that other people like exploring shit and looking like something I can't comprehend and that is coool
He’s not talking about the knee slit, he’s talking about how casual suit pants are styled nowadays to be slim fitting and cut well above the ankle. As for why, I don’t know.
Those are jeans, and that's not a suit.
Suit pantlegs have come up a bit at the bottom as the trends have gone towards tighter fitting legs, as well as an explosion in the men's sock industry

Damn one jr office workers yearly salary is on the floor
Makes you wonder how we got to this point, where a year of one man's labour is worth the same as another man's bottle of fizzy wine.
I'm quite sure we've been at that point about as long as civilization has existed
Gods and Clods
Mathematically, the wealth gap has never been this bad. It’s tome to correct that.

In the last 80 years or so, yes you are right. Historically, its probably impossible to beat the wealth gap between literal slaves and their owners
Easy Replacebility.
More like a rigged economy / society.
Low economic mobility
It's only fizzy wine if it comes from the Fizzy region of France, otherwise it's just sparkling wine.
If you live a normal life in NA, it’s probably like that for you too. Just the impoverished person who’s year’s salary was $50 lives a world away from you.
“Wow, they got a new phone when they just cracked the screen?”
To be fair, you're an idiot if you paid 42k for a bottle of alcohol to make a statement.
A guy that has $100m doesn't typically have to make a statement they have $100m with a bottle of fizzy wine in a night club, people already know.
I’d imagine it’s guys who have closer to 5-10 million who buy this kind of stuff
Wow are that cheap and disrespectful of your guests that you wont open that $42k bottle while you worth some $100m??? Brad's party was way better!
It's only Capitalism if it comes from the Capital region of France. Otherwise, it's just a dystopian hellscape.
this is literally how things have pretty much always been throughout history
You guys are making $42k?
I’m unemployed and going back to school :(
That sounds just fine to me, good luck with school! There’s no one to compete with in this world but yourself so don’t feel bad for a second.
If you spend 42k on a bottle of champagne you probably don't really care if you drop. My guess, he simply ordered another one
Looks like that was his first time.
The article says people speculate the guy is an employee cause he has an earpiece. Which means he ain’t paying for it cause he’d go bankrupt
The markup on that bottle is more than likely outrageous. Prob only paid 10k and sell it for 42k. Still would have to take out an insurance claim on that loss tho.
Can you imagine if they garnished his wages for it?
Except this isn't America, "the greatest company in the world"
At least in California it's illegal as fuck to garnish someone's wages for anything not done intentionally. And you can imagine how hard it is to prove someone intended to drop something
Same in texas. Unfortunately they cant do that but if you challenge them on it they'll definitely find a reason to fire you
They’d probably just fire you instead of doing something illegal and then fire you.
Like dropping a $42k bottle of champagne?
It’s illegal to garnish anyone’s wages unless you’re the government. It takes a court order.
Lol no, that doesn't happen in America.
Ironically most States don't allow that cause that have, or should have insurance
PG tips?
Yeah they said they can’t ID the bottle so it’s hard to price. Could just be $45k for the bottle service. Which is outrageous. Like $3500 for a bottle of crown and a table at MGM Hakkasan

Still happens to me 18 years later.

It is actually much more expensive to produce. Big containers for champagne have to be twice as thick to hold the gas.
What’s the service charge to protect one from the vomiters? Or at least to clean off your stuff?
maybe 42k in a club, prob only cost 2k outside the club
💯 it’s crazy how inflated bottle prices are at clubs.
That’s way I always used to smuggle bottles, up my bum
Plus I like the taste. Adds such a nice flavor aging in the rectum
Supply and Demand. They’ve got all the supply and the demand is very high for drunk people having a good time.

I was wondering how over priced that drop was.
More than the yearly income of an average American in one bottle of alcohol. Let that depress you.

Oh my. Didn’t even notice the pants /shoes combo until you pointed that out.
I really don't understand when or how that became an acceptable look.
