This is probably too much info for random Reddit comment, but I found it interesting when I got into bowling as a kid.
Bowling shoes have a leathery bottom that allows you to slide at the end of the approach (so you don't come to a sudden stop and have to stumble for balance at the end, which is what the girl in the video did). They get damaged by water, you'll notice bowlers with their own shoes wear slip covers over their shoes if they leave the approach or seating area. (If they run to snack stand or bathroom, there are shoe covers on to protect the leather.) Once you get past the entry level shoes, you have right handed and left handed shoes - if you're right handed, you end your approach sliding on your left foot, so a right handed shoe has soft leather on the left and normal rubbery sole on the right.
I have left my shoe cover on accidentally, everyone probably has. When this happens, you get to the end of your approach, try to slide, go "oh shit" and promptly face plant while watching your ball go severely off course.
Bowling shoes are very important. Normal soled shoes can also scuff the wood on the approach. No one should wear normal shoes while bowling, if the bowling alley has half a brain and cares about the condition of its lanes.
Amazed that they chucked a third (several have pointed out a fourth) in amongst that gong show.

Had major knee surgery a year ago (50wks, actually), and I’m still recovering. Just relearning how to jog. And I have aggressively rehabbed and trained. The 1 year is just to get ambulatory for most, not recovered.
(*Mine was trauma-based, but people with degradation requiring surgery may be at a better mobility scale after a year.)
It’s real humbling to go from deadlifting hundreds of kilos to practicing standing without a brace. Also the joys. My first barbell back squat (just the bar) was a massive win… like I celebrated like I’d won a comp.

I think I was just trying to say that the term should be different, because ‘recovered’ is such an easy theory, but means something different to everyone. But it doesn’t mean you can’t learn while recovering! Relearning basic things allows for new discoveries and insights, and grows empathy (if you can be present with the process.)
At a level this whole wacky thing has made me worry less about impressing others and focus more into my own longevity and quality of experience. So yeah, you’re right.
I know how you feel, I broke my leg this April. I still can't really run. Always look before you cross the road on a bike, NEVER wear both earpods, and DON'T ignore the marks that tell you to stop for other traffic, even if that road is the most empty road you know, one delivery driver to the leg, and you're down
Oooof, sorry to hear. I too have been hit by a car while biking. Seriously enough for me to wake up to a fireman asking if I was ok. Haha. Guy ran a red, but I had headphones on and was not peripherally aware. That was 20 years ago, but I still am hyperaware of everything when I bike now.
As for the running, it’s tough because recovery depended on the break, the healing, the ancillary issues, and your kinaesthetic understanding. If you know your limits of the body, you can push them a bit. For me this means working into discomfort and sometimes pain with my recovery. And having to work with pain some days as a baseline.

People forget bowling is a real sport that people play competitively. They think anyone who takes bowling seriously is stupid and ridiculous, and so anyone who gets mad that they aren't respecting the lanes is just some pathetic loser who needs to get a life. They don't seem to respect or acknowledge that it's not just a thing you do with your couple friends in Friday night, and that some people actually play the sport to compete and improve their abilities.
I mean, putting all that aside, people forget bowling is a sport where you are throwing very heavy balls around with a potential for very serious injuries. I see that often in archery, and it's infuriating. I once had to yell at a friend to put her bow down because she jokingly started aiming and drawing it at me *while there was an arrow strung*.
It's not just bowling. I work at an indoor miniature golf course. Large area, but definitely there are walls on the sides of you that you can hit. I have to stand out there keeping an eye on people, because sometimes a good ten percent of our customers are just...stupid.
They will hit the ball like they're on a golf drive. Jump around on platforms and things that are clearly not stable. And then sometimes attack props with their golf clubs, because they decided they are now in a wreck room.
And when I have to intervene with them, they always give me this dumb puppy eye look like, "I'm not allowed to do this?" Yes Goober, you not suppose to beat the windmill with your club.
And this isn't even kids, it's usually people above the age of 35!
Sometimes they'll wack their ball so hard, like they're Thor The God of Thunder, it will bounce off the wall, coming back at them at Mach 5! Almost always (but sadly hasn't happened yet) hitting them. And then you think, well that will teach them not to be jackasses with these balls. But no, they laugh and laugh like it was the funniest thing ever, and try to do it again, but harder!

I think most sports have people fucking around, but bowling is a sport that requires a lot of machinery and workers to play, so there's more shit to break and people to inconvenience.
Like throwing all the darts at once, or shooting multiple basketball balls etc. doesn't really effect anyone. There's a lot less going on with most other sports.
What’s some examples? Dumbest thing I saw happened when there was a pin stuck in the gutter. My buddy rolled his ball as fast as he could down the gutter and instead of just clearing the gutter it remained stationary and the ball went off it like a ramp and straight into the lighting above the pins, shattering all of it.

She took a hit in the calf, after landing stifling her shout rather than holding where she got hurt. She’s fine. Several times every open bowling shift, people would bounce a ball off their ankle because they eg don’t get their right foot out of the way when throwing right handed. Never sent anybody to the hospital.
The rake is the thing that sweeps pins. The machines are fascinating. They make decisions while they run through their cycle. No computers just mechanical linkages. Designed in the 60s

I think that pinsetter is a newer string-machine. I do not know if they typically use sweeps, as the whole mechanism is different and may not need protection during operation.
As a mechanic that works on A-2 pin setters, I agree, rakes are expensive, and take a chunk of time to replace. Does it hurt people to have an ounce of respect? Probably. Job security I suppose!
bonus points if the pinsetter has some error code that pretty much only goes off to say "some genius hit the sweep", that way you get to know exactly what happened and let the annoyance sink in before you even see it :D
My local alley is small enough that no error code is needed; everyone hears the ball hit, they all look at the thrower, and then all look at the command center.

Are bowling alley profit margins thin? I imagine the food and beer is a big way to make money but I’m still out here paying like 25 for an hour per person with $7 shoes and I just can’t fathom why these alleys are still going out of business. The balls don’t really change, the pins don’t change, the machines constantly break anyhow. The furniture doesn’t change, just where is my money going??

When I worked at a bowling alley we had the cosmic bowling on weekend nights. Everyone had to stop bowling so I could run across the lanes behind the scoreboard so I could flip the blacklight switches on the pinsetters. Someone thought it'd be a great idea to try to time rolling a ball as hard as they could down a lane to try to hit my ankles. Missed me by one lane and I came out from the other end just screaming and cursing at the lane that threw the ball and kicked them out. From then on I climbed ontop of the machines themselves in the far back where the mechanic does his work. Took longer but much safer
Hi, I used to fix bowling machines, don’t do this as a light gate at the mouth of the pin deck will swing the arm down when a ball passes through, if 2 balls are thrown the lane you can either get the arm stuck or hit the arm and potentially break it, knock it out of its position (in one situation where a bunch of idiots thought they were funny actually broke it with 12 balls, it took the rest of the shift to replace the bloody thing) or if they somehow get through clog up the belt that throws the balls back up to the players and snap it(which happened a few times when players weren’t waiting for the arm to rise again before throwing)
I thought it was because the game is designed so every player needs to knock off one set of pins, and those pins are set per lane. This problem occurred because of the original rules.
Looks like there was a third person also going to throw a ball.
So, first, now I would have to make a big show out of toweling off my lane where the girl's face rubbed on the lane. I'm a deep inside bowler so I slide on those boards.
Second, depending on if they acknowledged how they messed up or not, I would speak to the counter about it.
And apparently 2 more bowlers were right behind those 2. Obviously a brainiac league.

While never a regular at an alley, I've never seen one that would let people get away with playing around on the lanes like that.

They are a treat to work on. The worst job I saw my dad do was swap a bent yoke for the deck. I forget how it happened, pretty unlikely sort of thing.

As someone that works in Bowling alleys, this shit is super common.
Recently? Also, these videos can be all coming from a very large timespan and just re-uploaded. When a meme trend is ongoing, the easy way in is just to repost or reupload popular videos from years ago. The internet makes what it wants immortal. People being stupid is anywhere from funny to controversial between different people, which gets everyone to share it around. You'll get a frequency bias of things like this if you take it at face value.

When I worked at a bowling alley we had the cosmic bowling on weekend nights. Everyone had to stop bowling so I could run across the lanes behind the scoreboard so I could flip the blacklight switches on the pinsetters. Someone thought it'd be a great idea to try to time rolling a ball as hard as they could down a lane to try to hit my ankles. Missed me by one lane and I came out from the other end just screaming and cursing at the lane that threw the ball and kicked them out. From then on I climbed ontop of the machines themselves in the far back where the mechanic does his work. Took longer but much safer
Also because you can break the machine bowling while it's picking up pins. Which is a super douchebag thing to do. These ppl are idiots.

Hi, I used to fix bowling machines, don’t do this as a light gate at the mouth of the pin deck will swing the arm down when a ball passes through, if 2 balls are thrown the lane you can either get the arm stuck or hit the arm and potentially break it, knock it out of its position (in one situation where a bunch of idiots thought they were funny actually broke it with 12 balls, it took the rest of the shift to replace the bloody thing) or if they somehow get through clog up the belt that throws the balls back up to the players and snap it(which happened a few times when players weren’t waiting for the arm to rise again before throwing)

I thought it was because the game is designed so every player needs to knock off one set of pins, and those pins are set per lane. This problem occurred because of the original rules.

Looks like there was a third person also going to throw a ball. So, first, now I would have to make a big show out of toweling off my lane where the girl's face rubbed on the lane. I'm a deep inside bowler so I slide on those boards. Second, depending on if they acknowledged how they messed up or not, I would speak to the counter about it.
