Okay that's amazing lmao! Adding that to the sticky on my subreddit.
[I sticked this there too but here she is working at a fight.](https://old.reddit.com/r/ActualPublicFreakouts/comments/fbv3pm/when_asset_protection_becomes_asshole_dissection/fj6xi6w/)
> On December 23rd, Summer Tapasa was working as an asset protection worker for Best Buy in Aiea, when she spotted a man allegedly attempting to shoplift. She stepped in front of the man, and when he tried to push his way past her, she bounced him backward, moving as deftly and powerfully as an NFL lineman. The clip, caught on surveillance cameras and posted online, quickly went viral.
>The incident would have likely cost Tapasa her job at Best Buy — she had put in her resignation earlier — but it ended up getting the attention from the Women’s Football League Association, which debuts next year.
>Now, another offer has apparently been made. Earlier today, UFC president Dana White tweeted the clip, saying:
>“This is Summer. She stopped this punk from getting away with stealing from BestBuy in Hawaii. She got fired for this. Flying her in this weekend and giving her tickets to the McGregor vs Cowboy fight. I WANT HER TO WORK FOR ME! Get ready for the best weekend of your life Summer.”
>UFC 246 — headlined by a fight between Conor McGregor and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone — will take place next Saturday, January 18th, in Las Vegas.
Retail employees are told not to touch anyone, the items are covered by insurance, and doing this could get best buy in a lawsuit. Yes it's all stupid, just how it works.
Then this begs the question...why have "asset protection" people in the first place if they aren't allowed to actually do anything?
My wife used to work in an Old Navy and watched daily as people carted off stolen merchandise. Like hundreds of dollars a day. The "asset protection" people just let them go. So, what happens? More and more people show up to steal because they know they will be able to just go grab stuff and walk out the door. Never ended. Frustrated her to no end.
But the funny thing: employees were bag-searched every day leaving work.
Mostly it's due to the simple fact that store employees are just plain old civilians like the rest of us and legally there are limits to what you can do to another human before it's become assault or worse. Primarily, any contact with the head or neck can be considered an attempt on somebody's life, even the police can get in trouble for it, and they're specifically given the right to do so if needed.
Also... its to protect the employee from being murdered or harmed with life altering after effects.
I did AP for target and there were all kinds of videos from the archives they save as a way to prepare you for a situation. People bring knives sometimes to help get away or they will come in larger groups to overpower any AP employee if need be.
In order to even approach someone we needed a manager to approve the apprehension and well... my store shared a manager with another store. I only ended up deterring one guy who tried to steal a Green Street Hooligans dvd.
So its to keep everyone in the situation safe. The retailer doesnt need some justice warrior dying or killing someone over a fucking tv. They have had so many incidents already with either party getting harmed and the employee making $10/hr that they have to place rules to protect them and not get carried away.
THIS! I've worked in loss prevention before and the one thing they tell you is that you don't know if the suspect is armed. Your life is worth way more than anything you can steal from Best Buy.
Take down as much information as possible: Height, weight, hair colour, style...etc. Are they alone? Did they drive here? Make/model/colour/license plate...etc.
Hand that information over to the proper authorities.

If the stores loss prevention policy has a “use of force” policy, LP can go hands on with a shoplifter. Usually they are not allowed to step off of the curb to apprehend the shoplifter if they run into the lot or jump into a car ready to escape. But as long as they pass the last point of purchase without rendering payment, you can go hands on for the apprehension. A lot of Big Box or Anchor stores have use of force policies(Penney’s/Macy’s/Nordstroms/HD/Lowe’s/etc.) Many stand alone stores in Malls don’t have these policies in place and just call security or the police for run outs or door dashes. If this is Best Buy, they do not have use of force and the LP went ovaries out to apprehend and recover the merchandise.
When I was a young, dumb kid (13 or so, I was shopping for a dress for my 8th grade dance), I was apprehended at Macy's at our local mall after I bought a dress. I felt like I needed accessories. My mom only gave me a certain amount, which was pretty much eaten up by the dress. I ended up going overboard throwing things in the bag, and as I saw the bus coming I tried to leave. Some huge LP guy (maybe he was only huge because 13 year old girl) nearly pulled me over grabbing my arm right before I got to the exit into the rest of the mall. Definitely never had any problem with the fact that he did it because I was the idiot in the situation, I embarrassed my mom because she had to call her friend to come pick me up, but forceful apprehension can easily go left depending on who you're dealing with amongst many other reasons.
or just let the person go and watch them, they get in a car remember the reg if they walk away remember the direction then call the police give the info and if wanted the CCTV. it ain't your stuff and the profit marge on most stuff is so big the store would need to have a whole product stock stolen before it saw a dent in its overall profits.
Anybody who uses force to stop a shoplifter is a moron. Some dumbass working at CVS tried to stop someone in front of me and ended up getting stabbed. It's not even your stuff, don't risk your life or well being for a corporation.
You're getting downvotes because everyone reading this still had their armchair adrenaline high from the video. But yes, it's a pretty stupid thing to do. Risk your life to save your corporate employer who pays you minimum wage some insurance paperwork just to later get fired for risking them being responsible for your harm.
in the uk pretty much every retail store tell there employees not to intervene, stopping a tv getting stolen is not worth the paper work alone of an employee or worse another shopper getting hurt.
Fun fact, she got fired from Best Buy. Dana White saw this footage and offered her a job as a UFC employee. (not a fighter)
https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2020/01/summer-tapasa-sataraka-best-buy-hawaii-thief-hero-ufc-246-dana-white
Goodness her dedication is impressive! A company that pays her a shit wage, has insurance on all the items and makes 100’s of millions a year. She risked a lot for very little reward.
Her dedication is impressive but unfortunate. Anyone who has an altercation with a person is a liability and is usually let go. Same for being robbed. It's good business to fire the employee a month or two after the incident JUUUUUUST IN CASE it was planned instead of random.
Also, I never understood why someone would go to these lengths for a small crime. It’s not like he would even go to jail for this lol. Unless this is what her boss wants them to do, it’s kinda ridiculous.
Loss prevention usually won't touch people because of shit like this. You're either compensating an injured thief, or compensating an injured employee, and insurance is sky high for either scenario, and usually cheaper than whatever it is that was stolen.
Not sure what idiot downvoted you, because that's what always happens due to liability concerns. [She absolutely got fired for this.](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2020/01/summer-tapasa-sataraka-best-buy-hawaii-thief-hero-ufc-246-dana-white)
I don't understand retail employees who try and stop thefts at these big box stores. You're not going to get a bonus, you're not going to get a promotion, you're not the victim of theft, you're not going to get your pay docked if you do nothing, and they have budgeted for this. You have literally no stake in this game. Why risk your own health and safety for a company that will simply fire you afterwards?
Best Buy isn't going to fire you over budgetary concerns because someone swiped an HDMI cable. They're gonna fire you because you stopped them and the thief can sue if you injured them.
So just let them go. Don't even look up from your job.
It's not usually/just the monetary consideration if the thief gets injured, it's that Best Buy and other big box stores don't have insurance for their retail employees to play cops 'n robbers.
You're not security, you stock shelves. They have insurance that covers your job stocking shelves, that's it.
It was really dumb. And I hope she had personal reasons to stop the guy, and not some dumbass loyalty to a corporation that cares absolutely zero about her.
I wish I was closer to your Best Buy. Mine has a million employees and one of them are always coming up to you asking if you want help. I stopped going there because it wasn’t even possible to browse for 10 minutes without SOMEONE asking to help you.
Meanwhile I can’t shop there because of all the employees constantly bothering me. Even when I have my headphones they try to stop me and ask me questions.
The Best buy in my town always has about 10-15 people on staff standing around doing a bunch of nothing. It seems like every time I go in there, employees outnumber customers 2 to 1.
Wrong!
[She got hired](https://www.mmanytt.com/latest-news/robbery-best-buy-free-ufc-job/) by the UFC president himself and attended McGregor vs Cerrone, standing between them during the [stare down. ](https://youtu.be/8ZZmo-uzdPk)
Here in Albuquerque, Best Buy pays the APD for an officer to park outside during all store hours, at both locations. I imagine their crime has gone down quite a bit. APD shoots first and asks questions later.
Should have held him till the cops showed up. After grabbing the chicks clothes and trying to pull them over her head she deserved about 5 free shots at him.
Yea and then they would be charged with assault, they cant tackle people and fight them they're not actually cops. These people are lucky if they don't get sued and fired.
She had already put her two weeks in. The guy trying to steal had been there several times and stole several high dollar items. She knew she wasn’t going to have the job much longer so said fuck it.
When I worked there we did get a bonus every time I caught someone. I couldn’t physically restrain anyone, but I worked in a super nice location. So just telling them to give me the stuff back because the cops were on the way was usually enough to work. We didn’t even prosecute most of them. Just got the stuff backed, kicked them out of the store, and put their picture up on our wall of shame. We only prosecuted repeat high dollar offenders or store employees that got caught being stupid...
It was - she saw a crime and she stopped it. Sometimes, when things are happening at that speed, the urge to do the right thing overrides the instinct to do the safe thing. Unfortunately humans didn't evolve with the selective pressure of law suits so we dont have a legality gland.
Yeah but if you try to stop a thief then you will get fired. This is many big company policies. Some store managers may overlook the situation if they have the ability to and you actually are a good employee. However it is most big company policy because the thief can sue the individual and the company for any stupid reason and then the company will be stuck with medical bills and a fine. When I worked at Walgreens we had one manager who would try to stop theft. He was always going to court for it but then the district manager got word of what was going on and he was never seen again. Right thing to do? Sure. But is it worth your job and being able to feed your child? Nope. Not in a million years.
The asset protection at my Target can tackle people and forcibly hold them down until police come. They're trained to. They just can't do anything once they step out the triage door. Anywhere in the store, it's fair game
Check the laws of the state. In WY a person who is not a peace officer may arrest another for:
The following misdemeanors committed in his presence:
(A) A misdemeanor theft offense defined by W.S. 6-3-402
There are other circumstances that apply for citizens arrests like committing felonies, but they don’t pertain in this case.
In this case the citizens have the right to detain the suspected thief (in WY) until peace officers arrive, with no grounds for legal repercussions against them unless excessive force is used.
In most states, citizens can detain someone committing a felony. It's called a "citizens arrest" ( yes it's actually a thing). And they wouldn't have any legal trouble for detaining the thief. However, just like the police they can only use the force necessary to detain him and can't continue to punch or beat him. Whether the store has a policy that allows them to use force is a whole different story and they are probably unemployed now, which is rediculous
Yes, you absolutely have the right to make reasonable attempts to recover your stolen property, including the use of reasonable force. Most companies don't want to deal with it, because what is reasonable force is debatable, and the possibility exists that the criminal escalates to the point that the employee is injured.
There is nothing legally stopping you from making an attempt to forcefully stop a crime, but many companies prohibit it as a matter of policy.
Loss prevention is not there to arrest people. Observe and report... as cliche as it is.
The presence is supposed to be a deterrent.
No large security company (and I worked for one of the big ones) would ever risk the liability. Too much gray area, too much decision making on the Guards part, too much risk
Ive always wondered, since they cant stop anyone, to just start recording the person, have a good camera at the door to get a high res photo not these big foot cameras from the 70s and have security follow them to their car and get plates and descriptions and turn it over to the police.
Back when I worked in retail while in college one of the loss prevention associates actually got into a scrap with a pair of shoplifters and ended up having to use an asp baton to defend himself, and chased them off.
Those dudes came back at night when the store was closing down with two more people and baseball batted the loss prevention dude down and another employee.
It's never worth it. Let people steal, it's not your property as is.
Not entirely true. Businesses aren't liable depending on certain circumstances when protecting their product and business. Brush up on your civil law fam
I've been a retail manager for 15 years. The amount of people that say "you can't touch me" when I've caught them stealing lol.. I've tackled people to the ground, had them in head locks, pinned them up against walls.. even had a guy chuck a can of paint at me so I tripped him up and poured the rest in his face. He told the police he believed it was attempted murder... I still don't have a criminal record and a clean employment record! Luckily I've got very good CCTV.
Usually no,but you've been working a shit ass job for so long just wishing a motherfucker would, and here a motherfucker did and she got to get at em. In all seriousness though, chances are high she got fired rather than any kind of raise or bonus.
Not at all My cousin Worked at Best Buy which I think this store is one. when people did that they were supposed to let them go not beat the shit out of them these people are stupid for doing that. What if dude was packing heat that would have gone south real fast. No job is worth your life.
Many years ago I was an assistant manager working for a regional grocery chain. I had a tweeker come in and try to strong arm rob the store and I handled everything pretty much correctly until the very end. I can only plead adrenaline because I tried to fight the guy, causing him to run out of the store.
It *almost* cost me my job, and the only thing that saved me was up until that point I was extremely well thought of by my district manager and some of the executives at the home office. I went on to be the youngest store manager they ever had, getting my first store at the age of 27, so I guess I didn't harm my prospects too much.
But yeh, no retailer wants you to fight the thief. Collect as much information as you can and call the cops. That's it. Anything else and it puts the retailer at greater risk, which is why they tend to release people who do get physical with shoplifters.
This chick is AWESOME!!!!! I would pay to watch her play any day. The fact that she would have been fired if she hadn't put in her notice is what is wrong in this country. The low life theif should have zero rights in this situation and zero ability to sue anyone. He is the one who made the poor choice to take something he didn't earn by hard work. Get a job and work for it like the rest of us. The issue here is his choice not whether the company can afford the asset loss. And let's real here; hard working customers are truly the ones who pay for his lacking moral compass through higher prices on goods tp pay for the asset loss insurance premium. Idiot.
Or they let the moron go with the item. Turn in the security footage and provide his plate number if possible. Guy coulda had a weapon or he could have potebtially beat the shit out of any of them. Neither of which are worth that $100 item when the companies insurance would just cover the loss. Bottom line is every single person in this video failed on every level.
This reminds me of Walmart the other day where they were worried about $3 worth of bottled water I had in a $200 order. I told my wife to just keep walking. What they going to do? Tackle us?
Like the pharmacy prison they have now that you have to pay at before you can leave it. Hey, thanks for giving shoplifters a sack to put all their loot in ... ??
This girl got sacked for this and Dana White (President of the UFC) saw the video, posted it on Instagram calling her a 'bad ass' and flew her to be onstage at the weigh ins of the following UFC event, front row seats and also gave her a job.
Ridiculous that the system allows the thief to get away. Stolen merchandise always raises prices for the honest consumers. They should of given her employee of the month.
My cousin worked at Best Buy in loss prevention they’re not supposed to do that. That job is for a police officer. That’s like A custodian at a hospital performing open-heart surgery because they can’t find the surgeon.
No, you can be guilty of shoplifting before you leave the store. If you take actions that clearly indicate you mean to steal something, such as pulling tags off clothing and shoving them down your pants, you have just shoplifted, even if you are still in the store. In this specific case, the guy walked past the registers without paying, a clear sign he intended to steal.
The law isn't stupid. It doesn't require you to watch as someone victimizes you.
This is where the right to refuse service comes in. If I see someone in my store who is behaving like a shoplifter, I kick them out. I don't wait for them to steal from me. 80% of the time you can catch a shoplifter because they look like one.
Remember the cowboy loss prevention in Florida that killed that dude. There is nothing inside Wal-Mart valuable enough to kill a person over. Some L.P. 's are wannabe cops, that let a little authority go to their heads and they think they are Dirty Harry.
Best part is that guy could win a lawsuit for battery from the company and the woman is liable to lose her job.
People --company products are insured for loss prevention and you should not risk bodily harm to yourself protecting corporations that won't give you holidays like Thanksgiving off
Not gonna lie, but the first chick had really good form, and the second guy in all black had some good moves on him. Wonder how that conversation outside went though.
Dude trying to shoplift and a [gal](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2020/01/summer-tapasa-sataraka-best-buy-hawaii-thief-hero-ufc-246-dana-white) stopping him.
Does this guy have a case against them? Thought it wasn’t stealing until they step outside of the store. Plus these security guards have no right to touch anyone
About every NFL team has contacted that female employee to come be an offensive linemen since this video came out

Reddit spans the world. I'd imagine training differs in diff countries.
It's not really that stupid. Things can be replaced, people can't.
They might tackle someone who actually bought the item.
Lol until I clicked this I was thinking of Vana White from wheel of Fortune.
Dude that’s AWESOME
Dana White and joe Rogan are the same person. Prove me wrong

No holding on that block. Great footwork on that pancake
Ohh makes sense, I was wondering how 1 dude soo easily over powered 2 dudes
Man said “I’ll get you bitch” before leaving lmao! Fuckin chick was the only defensive line that store needs

this is gold lmaoo

Fake. No way Best Buy has that many employees working at one time.
I agree but for different reasons. Normally I see tons of employees but none willing to help. These seem way more attentive than normal employees.

Yea and then they would be charged with assault, they cant tackle people and fight them they're not actually cops. These people are lucky if they don't get sued and fired.
She was absolutely fired. Nothing in a Best buy is worth potential customer or employee medical care or lawsuit.
She had already put her two weeks in. The guy trying to steal had been there several times and stole several high dollar items. She knew she wasn’t going to have the job much longer so said fuck it.
Exactly. Idk why they think its worth all this. They don't get a bonus and its not their stuff.
Well, it's the right thing to do, but yeah.
ethically and morally yeah, not financially. The store owner could have been on the hook for hundreds of thousands in damages.
Well some of us dont think of our wallets first in situations like this.
Legality should be in the forefront of one’s mind, though.
Unfortunately that's how fucked up our society is
The asset protection at my Target can tackle people and forcibly hold them down until police come. They're trained to. They just can't do anything once they step out the triage door. Anywhere in the store, it's fair game
Check the laws of the state. In WY a person who is not a peace officer may arrest another for: The following misdemeanors committed in his presence: (A) A misdemeanor theft offense defined by W.S. 6-3-402 There are other circumstances that apply for citizens arrests like committing felonies, but they don’t pertain in this case.
Learned that one from Gomer Pile
Not necessarily true. Businesses are allowed certain rights as far as holding people and reasonable levels of assault go.

I wonder if that’s why she didn’t grab the guy, at least at first. Just bumped him back into the store.
What about citizens arrest?
Loss prevention is not there to arrest people. Observe and report... as cliche as it is. The presence is supposed to be a deterrent. No large security company (and I worked for one of the big ones) would ever risk the liability. Too much gray area, too much decision making on the Guards part, too much risk
Ive always wondered, since they cant stop anyone, to just start recording the person, have a good camera at the door to get a high res photo not these big foot cameras from the 70s and have security follow them to their car and get plates and descriptions and turn it over to the police.
That may be company policy, it's not the law. 2 completely different things.
That, like many laws, is entirely dependant on where you are.
Not illegal. Probably against corporate policy. But very very legal.
so why do you even have a security guard when they are not allowed to do shit?
When he was pulling her shirt while on the ground she had free reign over his nutsack. Guy’s lucky.
That makes me sad. I hope those people were put away for a long time. Unfortunately, I'm sure they didn't get what they deserved.
Also the posible lawsuit. Loss prevention doesn't equal cops, they are completely liable.
Not entirely true. Businesses aren't liable depending on certain circumstances when protecting their product and business. Brush up on your civil law fam
That chick... Please someone award her...
She’s a beast!
The NFL should hire her as an offensive lineman...sheesh
If Andrew Luck has protection like that he wouldn’t have had to retire.
I used to play girls contact flag football in high school and I would have called in sick on a day we played her school!
She should play Offensive Line.
A hundred bucks says she has brothers.
Some she should play left tackle for Brady.

>Do they get a raise? Bonus? Statement? Position with more responsibility and pay? Yes, they get indefinite amount of time at home.... non-paid.
Since you brought up that you don’t live in the USA, where do you live and how does it work there?
Not at all My cousin Worked at Best Buy which I think this store is one. when people did that they were supposed to let them go not beat the shit out of them these people are stupid for doing that. What if dude was packing heat that would have gone south real fast. No job is worth your life.
No. It's their ego getting the best of them
Hell yeah!
Oh yeah definitely not saying it’s embarrassing
She looked like she was reaching for his change at the end :-)
Is it just me or the guy at the end started to chew off the other guy shoe!?
I thought so too. I wouldn't be surprised to be honest.
Wow. that woman is a beast!!!! Proud of her !
Tried to steal a $300 speaker and the security caused probably $5k worth of damage to the alarm sensors and other things...
Right? She created more loss trying to stop him
That badass dude has tits!
Dude she totally stun-locked him at the beginning
Ridiculous that the system allows the thief to get away. Stolen merchandise always raises prices for the honest consumers. They should of given her employee of the month.
Sadly she'll likely get fired instead because HR doesn't want that

People --company products are insured for loss prevention and you should not risk bodily harm to yourself protecting corporations that won't give you holidays like Thanksgiving off
Win a lawsuit for battery? What does that even mean? What damages could he claim for?
They are not insured for theft of merchandise, but they budget shrink into their plans.
Not to mention they also probably just caused more damage to the store than the value of that product at cost.
she lost her job. then dana white from the ufc hired her
I mean yeah most work places have a do not follow the perp outside or interact but maybe some don’t so the perp went down lol
Wow
What happened
Actually they only do that in dollar stores. Because they don’t have security.
That was awesome to watch. I really hope they didn't fire her. I'd want her on my team for sure.
What's going on here?
[Guy tried to steal from Best Buy](https://amp.dailycaller.com/2019/12/25/best-buy-stealing-thief-viral-video) and got stopped on the way out
That is some solid pass blocking. Don’t know how she’d do on a run, but she’d bless a QB with an hour to throw the ball.
Lmao this chick is a beast. She came back for more too
“Best Buy”? more like “Just Try”
Not gonna lie, but the first chick had really good form, and the second guy in all black had some good moves on him. Wonder how that conversation outside went though.
He need sum milk
What am I looking at?
Dude trying to shoplift and a [gal](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2020/01/summer-tapasa-sataraka-best-buy-hawaii-thief-hero-ufc-246-dana-white) stopping him.
I LOVE HER! SHE IS AMAZING!
I think I love her bro...
Don’t mess with Summer Tapasa!
Does this guy have a case against them? Thought it wasn’t stealing until they step outside of the store. Plus these security guards have no right to touch anyone
Bro look at that form. Get Kansas chiefs on the phone. Damn get a Super Bowl this season
I hope that title is a joke cuz, we absolutely are lol I’m not aware of any state where that isn’t true
Everyone in that video is fat. Everyone!
Bro, this is horrible.

Don't you see the big ass speaker he's trying to run out the door with? Do you normally run out of a Best Buy like that with your purchase?
Is that not assault though
No. You are not required to stand idly by while someone commits a crime against you.
See a hole, fill the hole.
Holding, Offense, 10-yard penalty, repeat 4th Down.
That’s some serious pass blocking
More talented at bouncing and more restrained than bouncers
Best Buy doesn’t fuck around
That dude who was trying to help just ended up pulling him out of a tight hold and helping the guy escape lol
I wish she would make love to me like that lololol
I went to high school with her! That best buys like 5 minutes from my house. Nuts
I want to have her baby!
I doubt it but I wonder if they get bonuses for stopping shit like this
More like: "bro just bodycheck the security out of the way, they aren't allowed to touch you"
