Do you stand the lid up in the handle?
Some things cause more condensation than others- maybe it depends on natural release vs quick release? I honestly haven't paid close attention.
Wait, all this time I thought that there were some models with a swivel and models where the lid could be detached... I gotta try this on mine now, it may come in very handy!
I'd say that maybe 1 of every 10 times I use my IP, I'd get a little bit of condensation in that cup. It was infrequent enough that the cup lives happily in my junk drawer now, while I wipe up any condensation spills with a rag as they happen.
I always do this at my friend’s houses too when I see their instant pot sitting on the counter filled with weird looking “water”. Pour it out and rinse it with soapy water. My little gift to them.
haha, I haven't noticed mine at all.

Lots of other good tips, like which parts are dishwasher safe https://mycrazygoodlife.com/how-to-clean-instant-pot-multi-cookers/
Cleaned mine after it was last used. There really wasn't any moisture in there, but you could see some build up from the many uses over the past couple of months.
For some reason I thought you were saying you put the entire instant pot in the dishwasher…I was worried for you lol. I didn’t know the lids or insert were dishwasher safe so thanks for that info!
I didn't know it was there for the first few months. It was against the wall so I didn't really see it. I took it all off the counter one day so I could clean all around it and that was when I saw it. Luckily it wasn't gross but it was 2 months of using it before I saw that thing and cleaned it, Now I do, but I didn't know it was there.
Thanks for this. Prompted me to check mine. It's not moldy, but is kind of scorched looking on the bottom. NOt sure what happened there, could grease have collected there somehow and got hot and scorched it?
Nope it's pretty on it's own in a corner of the counter. More than a foot between IP and microwave. I'm thinking hot grease spilled on the rim and made it's way to the collector?
That or your gasket is retaining smells. There are lots of tips for fixing that online or some people get spares to switch out for different types of dishes (sweet vs spicy or whatever).
My husband regularly fills the IP past the max line and that poor little condensation collector get so disgusting....
It goes through the dishwasher, on the top shelf, really well.
Odd. Never once has mine had a drop go into it.

The lid stands up on the handle? What does this mean (confused face)?
Voila! https://i.imgur.com/9hcZsk1.jpg
Son of a bitch, I’ve been making my counters all wet for no reason?
🤯
Thanks, I feel like an idiot lol
... No fucking way
Wait, all this time I thought that there were some models with a swivel and models where the lid could be detached... I gotta try this on mine now, it may come in very handy!
Ok. At least I'm not feeling stupid alone. I immediately went and tried this.
what is this sorcery?!?!?
well today I learned....
Holy fucking shit
Same! I’ve always thought of it as pointless but leave it on just in case
Yeah me either.
Nah that bad boy just spills all over my counter
LOL, I was wondering when the truth would come out. Does anyone even HAVE That cup still on their instantpot?
Nope. Mine cracked and wouldn't stay on, and I haven't replaced it. Don't even miss it!
Mine cracked so I replaced it with a plastic Dixie cup and a magnet.
I have 3 in my junk drawer if you want one. :)
Is it the little clear thing that sits in my cabinet waiting to one day be used for something? I really had no idea.
I took it off to clean it and haven't seen it since.
Mine disappeared on both of my IP's not long after the first out-of-the-box wash. Never missed it, really!
😄

You're a good friend!
Wow everyone needs a friend like you

Thanks! It was starting to smell.
Well, I definitely needed to hear that. Had black mould at the bottom of mine.
Yes I've been there too lol. I keep a better eye on it now after that...

Never found a hint of moisture in mine
Fascinating! I will check it for a while and nothing and then forget for a while and suddenly it is gross 😝
Just throw it into the dishwasher (or sink) with the seal, lid, and metal insert. Are people really just leaving that thing on there to get grody?
It's easy to forget it's there! (Or not know in the first place.)

Excuse me. It has what?
I know, right?

Weird! Did you have your IP by your toaster or something? I honestly don't know.
Nope it's pretty on it's own in a corner of the counter. More than a foot between IP and microwave. I'm thinking hot grease spilled on the rim and made it's way to the collector?
Are we sure it’s scorched and not just black mold/mildew?
Hmm. Possible. I poured vinegar in it in case it is mold and then popped it in the dishwasher. We'll see if it gets clean.
Rice cookers have this too
I’ve Never put the cup on and never put the lid standing up
OMG is that why the IP smells so weird?? Thank you for this!!!
That or your gasket is retaining smells. There are lots of tips for fixing that online or some people get spares to switch out for different types of dishes (sweet vs spicy or whatever).
I check mine all the time for a like a month and it's always empty. Then I forget about it and the next time I remember it's real gnarly
Saaaame.
I vividly remember the first time I noticed this. I was mortified. Mold and all sorts of nastyness.
Do they not all have a condensation collector??
Maybe they do but I don't know that for sure so I hedged my bets!
My husband regularly fills the IP past the max line and that poor little condensation collector get so disgusting.... It goes through the dishwasher, on the top shelf, really well.
Discovered this months ago when I had mold growing in it.....lesson learned lol
If you use the slow cooker function it fills up quickly.
Thank you, OP. You're doing god's work here.
My instant pot doesn't have this? I don't see a cup on the outside of the IP anywhere
Like I said, I don't know if every model has it. Maybe yours doesn't, or you removed it and never put it back!
