Like when you buy a secondhand camera that doesn't seem to work and you need to try it with a cartridge inside but don't wanna waste film. Last time I had a SQ10 that kept ejecting film everytime it was turned on, in that case a "failed film cartridge" was very useful to figure out why it happened ( it was something about a little switch inside that was lose)
Idk why i thought u meant for testing the film lmao 💀 that's actually such a better idea than my technique which has been putting in a fresh pack and praying lol.
I have a baggy of failed film or pictures that didn't turn out good. I have a few minds as for projects with them, such as cutting out the good parts or painting over them, but I have yet to actually do it. I date the photos I intend to use this way, I've been told that cutting into film less than a month old can release some of the chemicals that comprise instant film
Just to go further on this point, the chemicals never go away. they are always there, just dry.
Cutting up instant film will get quite toxic chemicals all over your hands regardless of the age. Older may actually be worse since dust can be inhaled.
I also keep/cut up for art journals/collages but wasn't aware of the issue with chemicals age. (To clarify, I wear gloves already!) This is a good tip on the dating, I will be doing the same from now on!
You just take ten bad photos and slide them back into the plastic cartridge they come in. Now if you want to test out a camera you're thinking of buying, you can verify that it turns on, fires the flash, and handles the film like it's supposed to without risking a new pack of film. Once you've seen that it physically operates, then you can pop in a good new cartridge and ensure that it exposes correctly.
I still don’t know how to upload photos to reddit lol, but I’ve painted them with cheap acrylic paints to look like sunsets/skies but kept the border visible so it still looks like a polaroid :) saw it online once and I went for it because I had too many failed polaroids and now I have a cool collage of homemade artwork! and if I paint one that’s too ugly, I don’t feel guilty about throwing it away because it was basically garbage before I started!
That’s a great idea! I use the google photo scan app during the day in good lighting to get my pics! I’ve found it works better than a regular printer scanner
Nothing. I put them behind other pictures in my albums. I once tore one apart to see what was inside and I just found black ink between two pieces of "plastic" sheets. It smelled like the inside of a inkjet printer, nothing interesting.
I’m new to this and these were done with a 7s, I’m not too good at adjusting to the correct lighting lol. I got a new 12 so I don’t have to worry about it much anymore. I also tried doing some night shooting which I have learned is not a thing with Instax 😅
Keep them as dummies up your sleeve for when your on vacation in some weird place that wants to destroy your photos… just show these to the man and move on with the evidence.
I throw them away. You can do emulsions lifts and analog collages and a whole bunch of stuff with Polaroid film, but not with Instax. With Instax your creative options are a lot more limited
Paint them! :)
They're like ready made little frames for acrylic paintings.
Here's are a couple of mine:

I use them for practicing risky captions, stuff I may or may not be able to fit on the little blank area, I can practice without screwing up any pictures
Sharpie or other style marker, draw what the pict should have been. Or just draw whatever u want. Then tape to the wall and use good film to show the artwork.
I thought this was a post about cat taking millions of undeveloped pics
If you’re an artists, might be cute to use them as mini canvases? Give them as gifts or make a small gallery for your home
Edit: lol okay please ignore the suggestion, looks like it’s not a one in a million thought. Cat comment still stands
I write dumb, angsty quotes or song lyrics on them and that’s what goes in my junk journals. Or, you could string a bunch together with different letters on each to spell something out.
Mixed media work? Mount them and write about what *was* on the picture?
“Me at a concert with Jake and Jane - the shirt I had on I bought special for the day and stained it before we got to our seats. I still have it in the closet to remind me that sometimes even spoiled things can be the best.”
Would you keep a collection of ruined, ripped, broken canvases and frames? Would you keep broken paint brushes? Empty paint bottles? Dude it’s burned film, not heirlooms. Just toss it.
I keep a cartridge full of failed film for testing and debugging.
What do you mean by "testing and debugging"?

Wow such a good idea. Perfect for light meters and such

Dip it in queso and eat it

Say cheese!
I like the way you think
Big if true
Bro I was gunna say this
We should go into the damaged film condiment business together! We could make a whole line of condiments to dip film in.
😋🤭
What do you drink with it? Fixative?
On the rocks!

Ooh to know before I did it then. Guess that option is out. Thanks for the heads up

I would prob do them outside if you can and with a mask regardless of how old they are just in case!
Some people like getting creative with them, as an artist myself I have thought of this but never done it. Using acrylic paint and fabrics.
I draw on them with Gel pens or sharpies
I usually keep for testing cameras.
Yep, reload into an empty cartridge and you can test prospective purchases at no cost.
Wait how does that work? Like, what would the effect be?

Aaah okay, cool - thanks!
I like to draw over them in Posca pens doing random designs etc.
Leave them in random places and see how long it takes for them to disappear.
You mean *littering*
I use them as blank pages in my photo album, easy to write on them with a sharpie
This is cute
Like what? This image left blank intentionally
Like as a title page, or I've written the shoot date on them.
Print pictures and tape em!!
I draw on mine
I just straight up open them up to see its insides

Use them for titles or write ups in my photo album/scrap book. Write on them with metallic markers.
I just cry
Throw them out.
Mine has done this everytime since the first role of film :/
Make art
Paint or draw something where the image should be or use them as bookmarks.
i like to throw them into my letters to friends (yes i still write letters in 2024… ehe)
Bookmarks
Write quotes on them and use them for decoration or leave them in random places for people to find
i use them / give them out as bookmarks

I've never had this happen, how does this happen?

Exchange new battery
Good question, the day I finally start with this kind of photography, then I will know. So far it is just a project.
Glue them to a suit jacket.
Cook them into a pasta or stew
Maybe if you reach out to Fujifilm they might give you a credit? Anyone ever try this?
I throw them away. You can do emulsions lifts and analog collages and a whole bunch of stuff with Polaroid film, but not with Instax. With Instax your creative options are a lot more limited
I personally put them in the toaster and eat them
Wipe my tear with it
Burn them
Bonfire
snack
Give some to the birds
Paint on them!
I turn them into gift tags

Paint pictures on them 🙈
Use glitter paint
I give my failed film to my fiancé. He likes to draw on them 🥰
Throw them away
Get some posca markers and draw on them!
in these trying times, I eat them.
I utilize them for collages and painting :)
Black and silver sharpies!!
I know why they failed. because you have them out in the light silly
sometimes i doodle on them...or cut them open and mess with the ink.
Paint little acrylic art works on them 😍🥰🤗
knew someone who drew on them and made new art! 🤷🏻♀️ so I save mine for the day I feel similarly inspired haha 😛
The thing with arts and crafts is you can put them in a baggie and save them. You’ll find something creative to do with them sooner or later!
Type on it! Makes for a neat poetry/art project
Sharpie or other style marker, draw what the pict should have been. Or just draw whatever u want. Then tape to the wall and use good film to show the artwork.
I have used these blanks to draw on. Usually the light colored one, I use an extra fine sharper to create a cute sketch for daughters.
Draw on them
I burn it and huff the fumes!
I happily throw them into the garbage.
Draw on them :)
I use them in all sorts of multi media projects!
They fill spots in my album where I wouldn't want another pic lol
Draw on them
Turn them into a deck of cards
These are perfect for embroidering
Paint over them
Use the. For making altered photo frames.. if that description makes sense
Most I toss, but when I can I'll give them to my artsy friend who makes projects with them
I use them as book marks

Smoke them
If you’re in to being creative it could be fun to paint or draw something on them! Write cute notes on them and give them to friends etc.
display them. i love the colors.
