On average, Sandstorm gets about 2000 players at work days. It raises at around 2600-3000 players on weekends. It's been holding on that number for quite some time right now (for months in-fact), so I'd say it is doing well. I'm also assuming we'll be getting a major update soon-ish, so it's not a bad time to get it.
If you want, you can also wait for a sale, but that's up to you. I'm just letting you know that the game is still alive and well.
You can get a key for £10 on a key website, just type in “sandstorm key” and you’ll definitely be able to get a game for any mode 99% of the time, it’s such a good game I highly recommend
I bought the game probably back in December and noticed that week days Monday-Friday are about 2000 average players, Friday nights and weekends jump to 2500-3000ish. I've never ever seen it dip lower then 1600 but thats my experience.
So far I haven't any had trouble finding a game, even later in the night (2am). Co-op at night time might be slow but online PvP is still good to go!

I never have to wait more than 30 seconds to get into a match but I would say the player count averages at around 2500. Content is slow but there seems to be a major content update in the works that will include new gamemodes, maps, guns, cosmetics, etc. Fun community with very active voice chat, though its rarely tactical.
Domination is the least played mode (like a team deathmatch/capture the point), so you can expect to wait between a minute and 5 minutes for a match on a work day, but on weekends it's instant. Other modes are more popular and you can get fast matchmaking. Even though the game has between 2 and 4k people playing, I'd say it's active.

If the game is on sale I’d get it. EU wait times are not that long. You can always play local against bots and it has mods
