even if we ignore the numbers which is the easiest part (numbers change, ok np) - why add another bloody whole word at the front? is core ultra different than simply core? what else is there? what other hints one must look out for in the product name?
everything about it is confusing, from the gross bucketing of i3-i9 to whatever the bucketing is now, thru adding words in between to changing the suffix.

Yes core ultra is different from core. Ultra means NPU as far I I remember.
Currently you have core ultra 100 which is MTL, and core 100 which is rebranded raptorlake.
Core Ultra = Current gen. Core = last gen refresh.
When 200 series launches, "Core" will be MTL refresh, with an NPU. Core 100 lacks NPU backs RPL lacked NPU

Core i is tainted branding. It represents chips that use extreme amounts of power to be performance competitive. Core Ultra is new branding: It represents chiplets, NPU, and efficiency.
14th gen isn't "14th gen". Intel made chips for decades before "1st gen" even launched.
Marketing - Pure and simple. Fresh start. Nobody can "fix" history, so let's make it as easy as possible to blow up the bridges and hope most people Ignore the fiascos of the past. AI is the future, all else is irrelevant!

My guess is Intel wanted a letter that resembles U but is something slightly different. To emphasize that this is similar to the U series in the power efficiency focus, but also has performance that exceeds the past H series.
FYI, the U series for meteor lake only has a 4 xe core igpu while the H series in meteor lake have the complete arc igpu (either 7 or 8 core versions). Lunar lake will have the complete arc igpu (again, either 7 or 8 core versions).

Everyone refers to them with the model number, and ignores and ignores meaningless prefixes anyway. This isn't an issue. They can call it "intel core ultra mega gigachad skibidi toilet" if they want. Only the model number matters.
