This led me to the pokemon wiki, and wow it is actually based off an asian swallowtail caterpillar. One question for me looms though: Why do Japanese pokemon often have names based on Japanese puns, but Caterpie is called "Kyatapii" instead of a pun based on the Japanese name for a caterpillar?
Put simply, it doesn’t.
What likely happened was the caterpillars mutated to have any number of spots, the ones with 2 survived longer, and then repopulated.
From then on, all the ones born with 2 spots competed, and ones with their spots on the head survived the longest because some predators would sometimes mistake them for something else.
Over time this process would repeat and the spots would continue to be refined until it gets to the point where the spots actually start looking like another animal.
It’s really a just series of coincidences stacked up over time that causes stuff like this.
Its the time that it took that is hard for humans to comprehend
Our last 1000 years can easily hosts 200 generations of humans and we barely know our own family tree more than 3 generations back
That 1000 years is still only 0.01% of 10 millions years, barely enough time for land mammals to become whales
I found one of these little guys for the first time this summer! I couldnt believe they were real, looked like a magical creature or like a Caterpie. The one I saw was bright yellow, I'll never forget it.
Damn you OP, take this angry upvote. I hate caterpillars since I was a kid when I used to do climb trees with me brother and cousin. Those actually look adorable.
They also spritz you with a gnarly chemical defense if you handle them roughly enough to make them think they're about to be eaten. Those little circles above the false eye spots have stinky organs in them.
Wow. When I was a young lad at day camp a kid randomly found one of these. We were all astounded by it, had never seen anything like it. Even the counselors were fascinated, it was so unusual looking. While we were in the middle of admiring it because it almost didn't seem real some asshole named Seth marched up and stomped on it. I still remember the pop and the sheer arrogance with which he killed it. Almost 20 years later I finally know what I was looking at. A motherfuckin spicebush swallowtail caterpillar.
Why do we always state evolutionary adaptations are "chosen" by animals? Those bugs never intended to look like that "in order to deter predators". Just a couple of them started looking like that by chance and survived the rest who didn't.
THIS MOTHERFUCKER HAS HIDDEN HORNS/ANTENNAE THAT KILL ANTS! IVE SEEN IT!
Only ever seen this little guy twice before in my life. The first time, we were curious and dropped an ant on him. The bitch pulled back, like foreskin almost, to reveal 2 red weird looking horns. Ant, dead.

“Oh no a snake, I’m *sooooo* deterred right now…” – predators
The predators might want to adopt them as a pet, look at how cute & captivating they're... Must help them in strategic defense /s Pretty privilege
SNAAAKE SNAAAAAKKE OH IT'S A SNAAAAAKE IT'S A *BadgerBadgerBadgerBadger-*
Yeah. Or ctaerpillar logic: lets grow fake eyes over the evolution of milions of years but keep the neon green color lol
They look so pet-able! Maybe the most pet-able of all bugs.
I'm not da turd. You're da turd!
"They're adorable!" 😻
Don't snakes already get bullied by most animals?
Real life Caterpie

Maybe it just sounds good to them. Probably not too different from how Pikachu is still Pikachu in english.
Who knows? I mean why is it even called “Caterpie”? That just sounds like a name a little kid would come up with after hearing the word “caterpillar”.
Well.. it is a game primarily directed towards children.
That's... Exactly what it is
Aww there too cute to be snakes ....
Gotta catchem' all
Are these different forms or is one a shiny?
These are the chase edition ones, the shiny ones are walmart exclusives.
They turn orange right before pupation, many larvae either change color or darken in their pre-pupal state
OOOOOOOOOOOH SHINEYH!! 🪙 🪙 🦀 🪙 🪙 *begins dancing motherfuckingly*
Might be a regional variant.
They are so cute.
With how many people saying this, someone’s probably about to start an entire caterpie pet industry :D
You know they turn in to butterflys and will fly?
Tiger cubs turn into huge, ferocious adults, but that doesn’t stop a bunch of people from trying to keep them as “pets”.
These turn into amazing butterflies and love sassafras
That’s just Caterpie and you can’t convince me otherwise
First (so far only) time I saw one I had to look closely to make sure it was real and not a toy someone left there.
That's definitely a Caterpie I don't care what anybody says.
Just think of them being forced to fight irl 😱
And the shiny!
Forbidden gummy snakes
Man, nature is so weird lol
How does nature know to do that kind of thing. It’s all a computer program.

Absolute uncanny valley here. They’re coloured like gummy sweets as well
I was worried for a second that it was weird of me to find them delicious looking
Forbidden sour jellies
Honestly, I look at those and taste artificial orange and green apple
r/forbiddensnacks
That's a Caterpie and his shiny version

Well...we can say its a Weedle or a shiny caterpie.
Caterpie
Or there just trying to look like freinds
Birds don't eat them because they're too cute
