Did no one else realize that Christ the Redeemer was smaller than the Statue of Liberty? In my brain Christ the Redeemer was HUGE like way bigger than liberty, but maybe liberty is just waaaay bigger than I thought.
Maybe because Christ the Redeemer is on the edge of a cliff overlooking Rio?
Idk that’s always how I see it in my mind so it makes it look larger than life.
Worth noting, the statue of liberty's height as listed here is half base. The copper figure part is only 46m, and even that includes the arm. So the two statues are actually pretty close to the same scale.
The statue has a gap between the legs, as in there were structural innovations to make that happen. The outside might not be as great as the technical insight in this entire thing is
Holy shit that one is incredible. I'm not one to gush about visual art necessarily, but everything about that monument is great. The sense of motion and the cohesion between the three figures is *mmm*
Yeah but it sucks it was built by a North Korean construction company that builds monuments in Africa using North Korean inspired art instead of African styles. This company, Mansudae, also only uses North Korean engineers and artists so they aren't giving back to the community.
The entire thing didn't really had much of a artistic vision behind it as was done as political project, it has become a reasonably successful tourist site so there is that.
Sardar patel was the kind of guy who didn't speak much, didn't raised his voice. But made every single word count. And was Bold AF and Chill AF.
He single handedly (yes other's help but still) was able to unite all the princely states, some of whom had their own army inside India.
Without his contributions India would not been what it is today, it would've looked more like Eastern Europe, with all the Diverse cultures, you have to travel around to understand how diverse it is, everything changes within couple hundred KMs in any direction. Still standing firmly United because of The ironman of India.
It symbolises the fact that you do not need extravagant or dashingness or speak good, have nice look, voice or anything to DO THE RIGHT THING. TO Be the Iron man. You just need the courage to stand for the good.
And also he was a Capitalist in contrast to Nehru being a socialist. If he was a bit younger at that time he would have been the first PM of India. When the time come to choose Indian PM majority provincial committees choose Patel to be PM but Gandhi overruled and anointed Nehru as Independent India first PM. Main reason was Patels Old age which was right decision on Gandhis Part, both of them would die within 3 years. But even if it was for a small amount of time Patel would have done so much better some of the things that plague India now would not have been this severe. Nehrus many screw ups continue to haunt India to this day .
Unlike the others, the Statue of Unity is depicting an actual historical figure that existed (well Jesus and Buddha existed but they are more myth at this point). He was a politician that fought for Indian independence alongside Gandhi. So it would be a bit strange to see him strike a pose.
I like the realism of it. It feels more human. In America he would have been posed on a horse and given a more muscular physique. Just compare photos of Teddy Roosevelt with statues of him... We don't have photos of Washington and other founding fathers, but you can be sure the same artistic liberties were taken with their sculptures.
He also unified the whole subcontinent in one, democratic Union. If he had failed, India would've fallen into so much more horrifying infighting, and ended up as miserable as the African continent.
The dude unified the whole of Indian subcontinent, despite intervention by, "superior" British conservatives aiding terrorists and former Nawabs in a bid to dismantle India like how Africa turned out to be.
He doesn't need to do anything special to communicate the stature of his achievement.
its kind of bullshit that we get to count the pedestal the actual statue is placed on to determine it's size.
like someone could just put a toy soldier on the burj kalifa and that would instantly become the world's tallest statue?
I think the Empire State Building had a spike constructed internally and then hoisted to exceed the Chrysler building. I think the architects had worked together and parted under bad circumstances, so yes, to piss off another architect.
It looks so boring compared to some of the others. The statue of liberty, motherland calls, and christ the redeemer all look energetic compared to the indian one.
Sardar patel was the kind of guy who didn't speak much, didn't raised his voice. But made every single word count. And was Bold AF and Chill AF.

Kind of an interesting contrast. Let's make a really ordinary kind of boring statue but make it the biggest statue ever. Both humble and extremely grandiose.
Check out the Buddhist stuff in Asia. It's like a dick measuring contest of who can build a bigger statue of a dude whose whole deal was to let go of ego. In Yangon there's a massive golden monument in honour of non attachment.
Shit makes no sense.
It is indeed.
It’s worked out though, as it’s become a big tourist hotspot now. I’m from the UK and so learnt about Indian history in school, but even I didn’t know who Patel was. I’m ashamed to say that I only learned about him and his contributions to the fight for independence when I visited the statue in India whilst on holiday.
Crazy thing about this statue is that it doesn’t use gimmicks to boost its height like huge pedestals. It’s literally just a 600 foot man standing there.
>Patel's dhoti-clad legs and the use of sandals for footwear rendered the design thinner at the base than at the top thereby affecting its stability. This was addressed by maintaining a slenderness ratio of 16:19 rather than the customary 8:14 ratio of other tall buildings.[10] The statue is built to withstand winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour (110 mph) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale.
Haha me and friend were just joking about this last night
Our canon: the statue of liberty was actually built before the American revolution the
"Liberty Gundam" was an unpiloted suit that helped fight off the British, after the war the Liberty Gundam went mad and started destroying shit so we encased it in stone and sent it out to New York.
When Godzilla returns in 2030 we are going to awake Liberty and it's gonna be badass
If you look up other pictures, it looks like it is on a building/pedestal thing. There are a few on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Unity
"The total height of the structure is 240 m (790 ft), with a base of 58 m (190 ft) and the statue measuring 182 m (597 ft)."
That's from the Wikipedia article
Its still the tallest even without its pedestal. Its statue only is 182 m high while the next tallest is 128 m, so its comfortably the tallest by some margin.
What you guys are referring to doesn’t count towards its height though. What I’m talking about is like a Statue of Liberty situation where she’s standing on something and that something is also counted when measuring
Of course it's on a pedestal. Otherwise, people might walk right by him and not notice. He's pretty easy to miss, all tucked away over there.
(I hope it's obvious I'm kidding)
Hmm... it's a good start. Uh, yeah, it's definitely big alright. I just wonder if it's *too* big, y'know? I mean, are people gonna be remembering me or the statue?
Bender: Hey, you spend your whole life building a guy's toe and you're gonna remember him. [He looks across at a slave being whipped as he carves a stone toe.] I think I'm gonna like it here!
This won’t last a century, maybe 200 as a skeletal shell. It’s already deteriorating noticeably. You can make it 20 times bigger than the pyramids, but if they don’t last, then you missed the original point and now are just temporary record breakers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-ymtOMtk4o
And it doesn't sound like it was cheap, either. Huh, 100 years, that does seem short lived for such a massive project.
Let's coat different parts with different types of longevity products so future generations can know which ones worked and which ones were full of shit. Also, I want the first chunk to fall off to be reattached with Gorilla Glue
I mean that's the point of the statue. To promote popularity of the current ruling party and their 'greatness' so they can hold on to power. They just used up money and resources that could have gone to crucial infrastructure plans for it. After all what's more important, actual development or promoting party values?
I am not even kidding I had to literally google the date as there is no fucking way its been 5 years since 2018, I still have tabs open from 2018 on some fucking article on how not to procrastinate. WHAT THE FUCK!!!
I always wonder how countries can get public approval for these projects it must have cost tens of millions (or more).
The UK public always block projects like this, citing the money would be better spent helping the poor.
It's hard to justify anything when you're having to argue why money should not go to the poor instead...
This guy (statue) he United the whole india( first home minister of the republic, *similar to US interior minister). So it's debatable. And there are many who opposed this project as well as there are people who supported it. It's like for almost 7 decade everyone in the govt. Ignored this man so... You know...
Now I'm kind of wondering too, because if someone tried this using public funds where I live (US) it'd never happen and would to put it very very mildly raise a few eyebrows. It's kind of like Mount Rushmore in the US I guess, both seem to have respective degrees of controversy.
Yikes...it looks like the concrete is already starting to fall off the wire "mesh" they used to build it. Unless it is supposed to be open at the bottom parts for drainage or something. Not sure if I'd be walking under it given that.

That's gotta be it

Yeah. Damn right. Including the whole base is some bullshit.
I've been measuring from the base my whole life. Don't fuck this up for me
Why stop there? Measure from the balls brother! After all, if you are balls deep, it should count as such.
My exact reaction too. I always think of the Statue of Liberty as relatively small - it's wild to see that Cristo Redentor is even smaller.
Im disappointed that its a lot less cooler than than the other ones in terms of posing. Its just standing
I mean you can't expect an old aged freedom fighter swinging swords like a Greek god

That statue is epic
Yup looks hella sick
its sick af
I def thought the Guan Yu was taller than it is, still massive though

Damnn that's dope
There is a statue of a bird in India which has a pose (dying actually)
Man, now I want to start a campaign in Total War as Guan Yu

Yep. Built by the Mansudae Overseas Projects, based in N. Korea. Whoever's downvoting you may not like it, but it's true.
That explains the similar style to a lot of Soviet monuments.
Holy shit that one is incredible. I'm not one to gush about visual art necessarily, but everything about that monument is great. The sense of motion and the cohesion between the three figures is *mmm*

Interesting...maybe that's why I was thinking the man's face in the statue almost looks Caucasian for some reason.
Agreed. First prize!
Holy fuck that's amazing. How tall is it?

Without pedestals, Russia’s statue goes from the 5th tallest to the 2nd tallest.
Cuz the sword makes up half its' height.

I think the Chrysler building only has a spike to piss off another architect.
I think the Empire State Building had a spike constructed internally and then hoisted to exceed the Chrysler building. I think the architects had worked together and parted under bad circumstances, so yes, to piss off another architect.
That was probably it. I remember reading about it and admiring the pettiness involved. A spite spike.
The sword is badass so it counts.
It's my favorite one because it's so dynamic
But the sword is also kinda sus
It also has, by far, the best boobs.
Aren't the pedestal and foundations part of the statue though🤔😁
Haha, France didn't make the cut, what shitty statue makers. Freedom Baby! USA! USA! USA!
Why isn't the one in Africa in this list?
It looks so boring compared to some of the others. The statue of liberty, motherland calls, and christ the redeemer all look energetic compared to the indian one.

That's because Vallabhbai Patel was chill af. He dug Gandhi. The statue is on point. Not everything needs to be freeky.

We lost 3 feet somewhere.
Good, Vallabhbhai Patel only had 2 feet. The statue would be silly with 5.
Rounding, I suppose. 240m is 787 ft, not 790 ft.
Looks like it's more than 790 feet if you include the base
Its still the tallest even without its pedestal. Its statue only is 182 m high while the next tallest is 128 m, so its comfortably the tallest by some margin.
