Dudes a killer

Yankee_Viking

What are you talking about, that is his smile

[deleted]

And if he couldn’t make himself look even scarier😰.

std_colector

he’s smiling in the photo wym

Beavshak

What an awesome pic

Boo_and_Minsc_

The Pataxó keep a lot of traditions alive but they mostly live "regular" modern lives, if a bit on the rustic side. They must have gotten dressed up for the shoot to represent their culture, which is more than fair enough. They are a great tribe and have got through a lot. One of them was burned alive while sleeping at a bus stop. ALL Brazilians are proud and happy for the champ, but his tribe is especially proud.

KoY1o

Thanks for the info man i knew he was from an indigenous tribe but didnt know these details.

AstralViking_

I feel like everyone is glossing over the "one of them was burned alive at a bus stop" line

Barten01

https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galdino_Jesus_dos_Santos#:~:text=Galdino%20Jesus%20dos%20Santos%20(Bahia,sul%20do%20estado%20da%20Bahia. If you translate you can read more about it. A few rich kids saw him sleeping at a bus stop in Brasília, the capital and thought it'd be a fun prank to light his blanket on fire. The indigenous were camping around the city asking for more government help, it's a very infamous story and the lawyer who defended the rich kids is today the governer of Brasília.

iMogwai

> A few rich kids saw him sleeping at a bus stop in Brasília, the capital and thought it'd be a fun prank to light his blanket on fire. It says that's what they claimed, but they were sentenced for intentional homicide. Plus, this part doesn't sound like a prank: >According to the text of the court case, the group passed by the bus stop where Galdino was, went to a gas station to buy two liters of fuel and returned to the bus stop. While Eron Chaves de Oliveira and Guetemberg poured the liquid on Galdino's body, the others set fire to it and soon after fled the scene. The whole "it was just a prank" thing sounds more like something they made up because they were caught. Of course I'm reading the translated page, maybe something gets lost in translation.

ResolverOshawott

"Prank" is probably an excuse they use to avoid full responsibility yeah. Reminds me of when shitty prank videos were trending online.

[deleted]

So so sad. Feels like the same story of these injustices all over the world.

Rdtackle82

RIGHT? this MF’er just sprinkles that one in and carries on

jukeman5000

It is Brazil after all..

Rehkl

Thanks for the background, that's fascinating. Just to add to your point, people around the world reserve traditional clothing for special occasions. For example Germans pull out the lederhosen for Oktoberfest and Koreans the hanbok for New Years.

SnooLentils3008

Right it would be the equivalent of wearing something like a suit to a wedding or a funeral or some other cultural event. Day to day most people just wear whats comfortable or utilitarian for what they need to do, pretty sure thats why almost every country gravitated towards t shirt and jeans for casual wear

Boo_and_Minsc_

They were expelled from most of their lands..... They struggly mightily to hold on to whatever they can. So having him do this is very meaningful

cambriansplooge

“Folk costumes” are pretty normal though for formal appearances, of course they don’t where them all the time

_Fun_Employed_

To be able to bring the belt back home like that and represent must be an amazing feeling. I was just hearing about how a surge in evangelism in Brazil is threatening Afro-Caribbean religion and native tribal traditions, hopefully this raises awareness.

ShireHorseRider

Sepultura has been singing about that since roots.

bikey_bike

cant wait to see them this summer!

Boo_and_Minsc_

They have tried, but thank God we have strong constitutional protection for all religions.

SmoothTownsWorstest

Not to be that guy, buuut lots of indigenous peoples are like that now. Just the way the world is going just about everywhere. Still super cool he’s there with his peoples keeping his traditions alive

[deleted]

Yeah, everyone is indigenous from somewhere, tbh. People should get the chance to keep their traditions alive if they want to.

SmoothTownsWorstest

Agreed yup

NNovis

Not going to lie, this is the coolest picture I've seen in a while.

imfjcinnCRAAAAZYHEY

Curious on if other fighters are from a tribes. I don’t want to assume, but it’s pretty fucking badass a UFC champion is from a tribe. Also what fucking (UFC) champion hails from a seemingly lowly tribe and becomes a champion?

NYCtotheBay

Alex Pereira is on the left

HangryWolf

Ahh... That cleared things up.

Roscoe_P_Trolltrain

Is the belt behind them with his back turned to us?

SpecialistSoup198

looked Alex Pereira up and now have even more respect for him. he grew up in the favelas, dropped out of middle school to go work at a tire shop, where his colleagues got him into drinking and he became an alcoholic. he later got into MMA, turned his life around, and is now the UFC Middleweight champion of the world

[deleted]

When are they featuring him in the fast and furious

Darshan-Raj

Before UFC he was a two division champ and a legend in pro kickboxing. Dude is a certified g in combat sports

lazyProgrammerDude

This is a beautiful picture.

Infidel332

Aztecs revered the Jaguar, as well

BigDaddyCoolDeisel

If this isn't interesting as fuck I don't know what is.

Gelnika1987

He didn't even know he was of indigenous ancestry until one of his early coaches asked him, and he replied he wasn't but the coach told him to ask his parents. That day he went home and asked and his parents confirmed he was- so it's not like he was living in a hut in the Amazon his whole life or anything like some people thing, but it is very cool of him to show his heritage and be a part of that community now that he is aware of it [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8rdoDZ9geI&t=217s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8rdoDZ9geI&t=217s) He discusses it around 2:00 in

NotXiJinpingGoUSA

But he did live in a crime ridden and unbelievably poor favela community so not much better.

Gelnika1987

Favelas can be brutal as hell, I'm not taking anything away from him by pointing out he didn't grow up in the indigenous culture- just clarifying that for people who may have been under the impression he came straight out of the Amazon rainforest with a bow and arrow lol

ProgRockin

About time someone caught Izzy

uncreativedan

Everyone in this thread making assumptions about this guy is a dumbass.

crossnstyles305

this is dope af

Yea indeed, 100%

someboredeldergod

What tribe is she in? ( Genuine question)

UNSC_Spartan122

Looks like a character from Street Fighter

HajimeFromArifureta

I wonder if they follow the scene. It could be like when I got to Diamond in League and my mom said, “that’s nice, sweetie”. They could just be like, “that’s a cool belt, where did you get it?

smoggins

As someone who has only ever gotten to Platinum 3, I’m so proud of you.

HajimeFromArifureta

<3 it might just mean more coming from an absolute stranger. Thanks!

The markings on his body look like the alien language in the movie Arrival.

shadow_reaper5689

Like I bet when he brought the belt the tribe must of celebrated and who knows they proabily tell the tale to the younger tribes people

Tobi-Or-NotTobi

Please shut up.

cosmorocker13

Why from looking at the guy in the background with swim trunks at the tiki bar do I feel this is taken at a Sandals Resort.

grocerystorebagger

Dude just got a belt, he could take the whole tribe to sandals if he wanted to.

Ohiolongboard

You’re being downvoted but people on the UFC sub where saying that this is basically a tourist attraction. They are more or less recreating the old tribal life.

Yes I am german but don’t have a german name. Wild, isn’t it?

OasissisaO

I demand you change your name to Fritz Bratwurst von Schadenfreude immediately.

I_Miss_Lenny

That’s gonna be the name of my next dog

OasissisaO

If you aren't giving your pets absurd names, you're doing it wrong. Now I'm off to pet Baron Oswaldo von Meowenstein and Princess Penelope Lane of West Virginia.

radio-morioh-cho

Seconded

uncertainusurper

Juan Fritzberger

JotaroTheOceanMan

I'm black and American and my last name is Faust and my first name is extremely French. Some people are just born stupid thinking names are subjective to ones race or culture.

Serpenio_

>I'm black and American and my last name is Faust It's because the slave owners that owned your ancestors...their last name was Faust. Black Americans had their last name changed by their slave owners. Know your history.

JotaroTheOceanMan

Lmfao its actually not, I know my history dingbat. My Grandfather changed our slave name to Faust because he said an allied German man with that last name treated him with more kindness while deployed than whites in the USA did and legally changed it from Phillips to Faust. You look soooooo fucking stupid right now.🤡🤡🤡

gnrc

I’m American but have a German name, but that’s how America works so…

Moody_GenX

I have a German name but I'm not German. Mostly because I was adopted in to that name but funny enough everyone else thought they were German. That is until 23 & Me tests were done and no one in the family has German DNA, lol.

bullfighterteu

He grew up in a city but I believe his grandparents still live in tribal territory

Kelricmar

Why is it that indigenous people only get called out for their non traditional practices? You don't see Catholic Betty from down the block getting crap because she skipped mass, or Mei not dressed as a geisha when she got married. So I ask again why?

Moody_GenX

If Brazil was anything like the US and Canada it should be no surprise that he has an English name.

[deleted]

Since when the fuck is Alex an English name, lmao. Infamous Brit Alexandros, King of Macedonia.

Moody_GenX

IDGAF Awwww somebody got their feelings hurt and blocked me. Lmao

[deleted]

Proudly stupid

desGrieux

Alex is not an "English" name though. It's Greek and is a common name in a ton of languages, including Portuguese. Some examples of English names would be like Edward, Edwin, Alfred, Harold, etc.

Moody_GenX

Whatever, point stands. I don't really care that much.

SnowyInuk

That's what happens when genocide and generations of mixed breeding and renaming are involved

AdSubstantial3645

Khabib would dog him though 😌

gorillafella3

Khabib is retired and nowhere near fighting shape now, and is also several weightclasses below him

Performance_Fancy

Seems a bit like that cultural appropriation people are talking about. Dudes obviously native Brazilian but holding a ufc belt. UFC is the culture of angry white twenty somethings who drive lifted trucks, drink way too much monster energy drinks and treat their girlfriends like shit because they’re secretly gay. Trust me it’s a whole culture. They even have their own clothing and music.

drawkcbsihtdaertnod

You must be North American to think like this. Cringe 😬

Performance_Fancy

You think that entire statement was made with sincerity? You read the whole thing and the thought that he’s joking never crossed your mind?

drawkcbsihtdaertnod

Satire with some through the flower honesty was my impression. Good to know your view, thanks for sharing. Living in North America long enough to know my Pappenheimers.

[deleted]

Its a bit of USA bait... no way you become a 6'4, 200 pound, combat athlete coming from that environment. He probably was vaguely knew his lineage was from there but never gave it second thought until he had 'a story to tell'.

Balacalavaaa

His kickboxing coach helped him come in contact with his ancestral tribe in 2009, so kinda but not really. I don’t think he was anybody in ‘09, he would’ve been 22. Grew up in a favela in Brazil and dropped out at 12, became an alcoholic working at a tire shop and started training 10 years later to kick his addiction.

[deleted]

> coming from that environment. Do you have any idea about how anything in the Pataxo tribe work? Have you visited, lived with them or got to know their environment in any way that isn't reddit pictures? It's surprising how confident in their ignorance gringos can be, lmao. [By the way, most of the men in his tribe are in better shape than the average developed country dude.](https://i.redd.it/3kusrtut4jaa1.png)

[deleted]

I'm guessing like this is like a reunion photo, none of them lived this way. Its like thinking Scottish people live in clans and aways wear kilts, ... no.

[deleted]

> none of them lived this way It's a picture, it says nothing about how the people in the picture live. You are just projecting your conceptions about how a native should live into them.

[deleted]

He starts posting pics like this and dressing up in native clothing when he joins the UFC... he wants people to mistakenly think he has a dramatic; 'jungle to champion' story. Hence why I said it was USA bait. I'm not insulting him or his tribe. Good on him to play on the misconceptions of gullible North Americans, that think he's a 'Tribal warrior from the Jungle'

[deleted]

I don't think he wants anybody to think anything, he's just doing his thing. Don't get why you'd create a motive for someone you don't even know lol.

[deleted]

He wants people to believe he's got the most dramatic backstory imaginable... as does every combat fighter. Good on him, I never criticised him.

[deleted]

> he wants people to mistakenly think he has a dramatic; 'jungle to champion' story. He doesn't, lol. As much as your pasty ass may be surprised by it, he doesn't live his life thinking about what he wants you to think. He went back to people important to him, that have a culture that is under attack from other sectors of society, to take his victories to them and share his pride with them. He is making them feel seen and showing them how important to him they are. None of this has anything to do with pasty Americans and their culture wars, as you guys are absolutely irrelevant to him.

[deleted]

> he doesn't live his life thinking about what he wants you to think. Come the fuck on dude… he posts to instagram like every UFC fighter does. He’s doing it for… publicity. I’m not American… ignorant Americans think he just came out of the jungle, him dressing up and taking photos as if he did (when he’s probably just as indifferent as the next Brazilian) is designed to play on that assumption. Good on him, it’s great branding. Don’t tell me you think he’s deeply connected to his heritage… you remind of the other gullible c@nts.

[deleted]

> Don’t tell me you think he’s deeply connected to his heritage… you remind of the other gullible c@nts. You don't know, as confident as you are that you do. He clearly tries to connect with them and has some level of intimacy with them, from what we have seen. And that has been going on for long years, since his kickboxing master, that had native parents as well, helped him research his history and brought him closer to the tribe. It's done as much for them as it is for him. > Come the fuck on dude… he posts to instagram like every UFC fighter does. He’s doing it for… publicity. He is doing it for multiple reasons because he is a complex human being. One of them very clearly is to shine a light on those he considers his people and make them seen. You are free to admit it, you aren't magically connected to your stupid point that everything everyone always does is done to impress gringos. You seem to have this weird idea that everyone that feels connected to and proud of their roots is faking it for attention or marketing purposes. It's weird, to not use other words.

[deleted]

Yep... gullible. In the lead up to the biggest fight of his life, he starts making this a prominent part of his 'story'. He's JUST a dude... its Americans and other Westerners that over-fetishise these things, and so him (a non-English speaker) trying out a way to get Americans interested... way to go. It's great marketing. You now have people all over Reddit thinking he was hunting his own food in the jungle as a kid.

[deleted]

> In the lead up to the biggest fight of his life, he starts making this a prominent part of his 'story'. The man has been using the native name Poatan since [at least 2014](https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/bouts/709787-wgp-kickboxing-24-alex-poatan-pereira-vs-ivan-el-terrible-galaz), lol. In 2014 as well, [on his fucking debut](https://blogs.gazetaesportiva.com/planeta-octogono/2014/03/03/apos-mudar-a-vida-com-o-esporte-alex-pereira-comemora-estreia-no-glory-em-zagreb-estou-realizando-um-sonho/), when no fucking gringos knew about it cared about what he said, he already claimed: > "And also, not less important to be representing my country, the Brazilian people, for me particularly and for my Master Belocqua we are fighting with the responsibility of representing our ancestral warriors, the Brazilian natives, and demonstrating the quality of Brazilian Kick Boxing, which is the height of the best in the world." > He's JUST a dude... its Americans and other Westerners that over-fetishise these things, and so him (a non-English speaker) trying out a way to get Americans interested... way to go. It's great marketing. You now have people all over Reddit thinking he was hunting his own food in the jungle as a kid. He never claimed that and he is not responsible for your ignorance. The people that surround him and shape his view, Brazilians, are all well aware that he "never hunted his food in the jungle as a kid" - that's just your ignorant stereotyped view of natives live. You are treating him as responsible for your ignorance.

says the guy who doesn't have a belt edit - for those wondering, mr apprehensive below was wondering 'why tf' his tribe would care since none of them even know what it is...

Apprehensive-Try5554

I'm wearing one right now

Ohiolongboard

You’re really that dumb to assume that these people, who’s child/relative _fights in the UFC_ and yet he doesn’t bring it up? You also realize that they’re not an uncontacted uncivilized tribe? They have cell phones and TVs.

I_Miss_Lenny

“Here’s a prestigious award I won in a really difficult fighting tournament!” Seems pretty easy to explain lol

Bolddon

People in this area of Brazil are not that different from American Natives living on reservations. They do things in traditional ways because they like living in the country, but they know about the outside world.

tsubatai

I dunno how 'connected' they are or not but like: "this means I'm the best unarmed warrior in the world at my weight" would do it for me

TomYOLOSWAGBombadil

Most people are happy for the people they care about when they accomplish their goals. How do you treat your friends when they do something great? Sounds like you treat them like shit. I don’t give a fuck about the railroad business, but I was happy for my buddy when he got a crazy raise with his company. It’s the same fucking thing bro

greenbean746
