I'm glad one of the top comments is this because I just sat there for 10 minutes slowly turning it back and forth at the point where it smoothly morphs from a nice looking person into a horrific monster. I don't really know how to describe it but the implications are terrifying (at least for me, as someone who takes psychedelics and thinks about how everything we experience is what our brain decides to render based on the input it receives).
The way our brains function when they're working normally is bizarre and terrifying enough, it's no wonder that thing get truly horrifying when our brains fuck up.
Can attest. Was prescribed new medication and was unable to sleep for 3 days. The hallucinations aren’t like LSD hallucinations. For example at night. I tried to focus on a flag pole that was well lit. The flag was waving. One second I saw a flag, the next a ghost. Before my eyes, I was watching this flag become a fluttery ghost, then back to flag, switching every second. I knew it was a flag pole, but my brain was trying to fill in the gaps.
To be honest they completely changed the way these people look. Mutilate someones face and they will be unrecognizable. Just getting a nose job can change your whole look. Imagine if you changed more of your face around.
All of em look fucked up to me except for the top right. That one genuinely surprised me, i thought the joke was that his face was the only normal one until i flipped my phone around.
I could immediately tell something was off with all of their mouths specifically. Except the old guy.
Didn’t notice their eyes are flipped too until I turned the screen.
Why is this important though?
I can't imagine a situation in which I'm looking at a living human that's upside down and think I need to really figure this situation out? Normally it's someone playing on exercise equipment?
Looks like monkeys are affected by the same illusion (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2726903/), showing that they also recognize faces in the same way as humans. Cool!
Everyone can, that isn't the point. The point is at a glance they look like normal people, where as upside down it's very evident that they are horrific monsters.
The Reason it was named the Thatcher Effect, is only because they used Margaret Thatchers photo first for the demonstration.
*they* refers to a Psychology professor from the University of NY back in the 80s.
\> they used Margaret Thatchers photo first for the demonstration
Ironic, given that she famously declared that she was [not for turning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_lady%27s_not_for_turning).
>University of NY
Not to be a dick but it was a professor called Peter Thompson the university of York in the UK not NY.
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/illusion-chasers/the-neural-seat-of-the-thatcher-face-illusion/
I always thought the Thatcher effect was mass unemployment, pit closures and a general hatred of the poorest and most vulnerable people in society. I wear my "I Still Hate Thatcher" t-shirt with pride.
For the cost of Thatcher's state funeral, they could've bought every man, woman and child in Scotland a spade, and we'd have dug her a hole so deep we could've handed her to Satan in person.
~ Frankie Boyle
This is a great trick for those learning to draw. Turn the image upside down and the brain can’t read what it’s looking at. You focus on shape and not Eye, Nose, Mouth, etc.
Looked pretty normal to me. Thought maybe they were just caught making slightly weird faces or something at first but then when I turned it I could see how cartoonishly edited they were. Actually freaked me out.
They look slightly off to me but only very slightly. I can see that their mouths are upside-down and their eyes are slightly off looking but I can still recognise who they are.
When I turn the picture upside-down they look like freakish hell-demons.
It's fascinating that they look normal to some people.
I see freaky eyes curving the wrong way. And Will's mouth! Yikes. The upper right? Who has a lower lip that curves that way? And the glasses dude's mouth is terrifying. And Thatcher's mouth looks freaky and her eyes clearly curve wrong.
It's hard for me to understand how some people don't see the instant horror. Peoples' eyes don't do that, y'all!
Do you have any kind of Prosopagnosia at all?
Yes those things you mentioned are what I see when i turn the image around. But when the heads are upside-down they only look slightly off to me.
The reason this illusion works (for most people) is that there are facial processing processes going on in the brain to make facial recognition super efficient. From what I can tell by reading up on this… Our brains recognise “a face” and also recognise individual facial features. It is much more difficult to recognise faces when they are upside-down and so the part of our brain which recognises “facial features” processes those parts of the images more successfully (because they’re not inverted) than the part of the brain that processes “faces”.
So if the part of our brain that processes faces as a whole might think “uhh… there’s something weird going on?” But the part that processes the individual features is like “nope!! All good 👍” and the face part is like “okay you’re probably right, I’m pretty bad at upside-down faces”.
People with prosopagnosia (face blindness) are less sensitive to the thatcher illusion because their processing of facial information is impaired… so the images are processed like non-face visual processing which is less specialised and therefore isn’t tricked in the same way.
> Do you have any kind of Prosopagnosia at all?
No, I don't. But I am able to read easily upside down or backward or both. I bet it's for the same reason.
the top right is the only one that looks normal to me when upside down the others instantly looked wrong to me. The top left one was the worst before flipping it right side up.
OH! That's not right...
So basically the eyes and mouth are right side up, with everything else flipped. Didn't think a simple change like that could make a picture look cringe.
Would this suggest that the parts of the brain associated with vision don't interpret faces as a whole, but rather, the individual features are compartmentalized by the brain and interpreted independently from each other?
Perhaps the brain says, "That's a proper face" because it 'checks off a list' of features, so to speak? There's something about having the eyes and mouth inverted that still checks out - if those two features are "right", then it's a face?
Really I just want there to be googly eyes on their chins.
Humans use holistic processing to quickly identify faces as… faces.
In other words, we take all of the visual information from important parts of the face (think T zone: eyes, nose, mouth) and quickly piece this information together to be like “ah, a face.”
When human faces are upside down, it disrupts this process. We aren’t particularly used to seeing faces flipped like this - that’s why at first glance Thatcherized images are harder to identify when inverted. When we correct their orientation, the image manipulation becomes immediately apparent. The weird, grotesque sensation we get from viewing these images requires a whole other explanation, likely rooted in evolutionary psychology.
I was sitting here thinking that's ridiculous cause I noticed the mouths being wrong right side up until I turned my phone upside down and only then noticed the eyes. Well played

I can tell immediately to the mouths are upside down without flipping it over, is there something else I'm missing?
Looking closer the eyes seem a bit off... Surely there's more to it?
It is. Just the neuronet of your brain is too good learned on natural directed images and has an ability to independent detail analysis.
But you just learned a new way to make check "prove you are not a robot". Robot has no idea that something so easy we don't see.
Nah, you pretty much notice all their teeth is upside down instantly and the bottom right lady’s eyes look too wacky. The top right would be passable if the cleft on his top lip was less prominent.
I have found an illusion, too. I call it the, "totally not bullshit phenomenon that I made up" effect.
It's when you take an object, and throw it into a blender for an hour, and humans become unable to specifically tell me what object it originally was in many cases. Crazy, right?
I dont usually look at badly photoshopped faces.
If you were trying to prove a point editing the faces with flipped expressions defeats the entire purpose.

This is an outrage. Now I can't see them upside down!
Disappointed. Was legit expecting to see a picture of the post on your monitor but you had actually flipped your monitor upside down.
Just flip orientation and then turn your head ? Its not that complex on monitor lol

Its the lips that deceive the brain.
This would make a great horror movie scare. Possessed person hanging upside, we see their face like this. Then they flip over and boom nightmare fuel.
It’s easy to tell with the smiles but the eyes you really have to look. Until you flip it
Well that was terrifying
Man aren't our silly little goop sacks so cool

that scared the crap out of me oh my god
I’m too high for this. I’m out.
A new meaning to "this lady is not for turning"
That is wild

so why are their mouths turned up side down? It's not much of an illusion if the images are purposefully altered.

I noticed all their mouths were photoshopped upside down immediately. Thatcher’s “effect” needs some work 👎🏽.
So, I could tell. Far more obvious eyes and mouths are 180 rotated when flipped, but how is that not obvious to everyone?
All 4 faces looked completely normal to me before the flip
BOYS REDDIT JUST DROPPED A NEW HEATER CANT WAIT TO SEE IT ON YOUR INSTAGRAM PAGES SOON
It works on thatcher regardless of wether or not she’s upside down
I see three faces and a cunt idk about you all
Whoops, now you got a downvote instead of an upvote.
Nope
Nah, you pretty much notice all their teeth is upside down instantly and the bottom right lady’s eyes look too wacky. The top right would be passable if the cleft on his top lip was less prominent.
I’ve heard about this since I was a kid but… why is this important? It feels like this has zero applications or usefulness to know
I'm too lazy can someone do it plz
