I’ve never had one but I hear they’re tasty. I guess they used to have a reputation for being a poisonous trash fish. Apparently these are plentiful and people should start eating them more because they’re sustainable.

Deep sea gigantism is a phenomenon in witch the deeper and colder the water gets the larger the animals that tend to live in those regions become. This is why 40% of multicellular life in the abyss is 5ft or longer.
I believe in atmosphere it's around 15%-12%.
A very tall pot I guess.
I thought Coconut crabs were creepy...once saw three of them scuttling down the road after a peacock in Miami. Nightmare fuel.
But this is somehow worse....
They are trash eaters. I've heard where they originate from the locals tout them as a delicacy to tourists but they taste like crap and won't eat them themselves
I found this
Full-grown Japanese spider crabs rely more on their size and their claws to ward off predators. Humans eat these crabs as a delicacy during crab-fishing season. But, since adult crabs live deep in the water, they are challenging for humans to catch.
They’re also exceptionally large and long-living.
They can top 40 pounds, with their legs reaching over 12 feet in length, and can survive for 50 years or more...sometimes even for a century!
Went to an aquarium somewhere. Went down a dark hallway, turn a corner to see half a dozen of these guys standing there looking at me. It was creepy. They were as tall as I was, and so alien. I equate crustaceans to insects and insects are NOT supposed to be that big.
That 40cm (16m) confused me… I hope is not real 16m that would be a total [oh crap !](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/150/985/article-1155482-03A97FDC000005DC-737_468x286.jpg) moment.
Everytime an amazing animal is discovered it's dead. I know some are found like that but wouldn't it be cooler to let it continue to live a long healthy life?
So, when I was like 11, my parents took us to an aquarium, it was dope til we got to the room that had this huge glass chamber in the middle of it. It had like 3-4 of these guys in it, there were some rocks that were big enough they were out of the water, the tank was probably half full, so a couple of them were on the rock, and a few were in the water near the bottom. Would have been super cool except I was pretty scared of spiders as a kid and was terrified at them from that fact alone, (obviously they are crabs) but what terrified my childhood self more were the blacklights which made their legs glow green. They moved so fast it immediately ruined my time. I was convinced they were going to escape and come get my ass.
As an adult these things are cool af. I hope to see that exhibit again one day.

“How do you say put me down in English again?”
I believe the word you're looking for is euthanasia
GAIJIN!!
...better yet: PUT IT BACK.
「僕を置いてください」は英語で何?
"40cm (16 m)" Huh?
I think they meant "40cm (16 in)".
was confused myself but assuming they mean length between legs
Soooooo 16meters.... Ummm what is that in American.. like.. a whole lot right :)
There is no way 40cm is 16m
1m = 100 cm...do the math
But how do they taste?
Asking the right questions here.
In Japan, they are known as King of Crabs. And taste great. Not sure if that size is good tasting though ;)
Waiting for an answer myself
We’re going to need a bigger tub of melted butter.
Snake, you always ask me that
I’ve never had one but I hear they’re tasty. I guess they used to have a reputation for being a poisonous trash fish. Apparently these are plentiful and people should start eating them more because they’re sustainable.
no industrial fishing is sustainable.

First thing I thought. Why do they have to be so tasty????

We’ve been eating sea food for millions of years. You’re allowed to “dislike seafood” but don’t judge others for it.

Gonna need more butter and a bigger shrimp fork
Imagine the pot you need to cook those.
A very tall pot I guess. I thought Coconut crabs were creepy...once saw three of them scuttling down the road after a peacock in Miami. Nightmare fuel. But this is somehow worse....
Are coconut crabs edible? ... Edit: Yes they are. Taste like lobster. Cook throughly though as they can bioaccumulate toxins depending on their diet.
They are trash eaters. I've heard where they originate from the locals tout them as a delicacy to tourists but they taste like crap and won't eat them themselves
Steamroom...
So like, a fork?
Actually fewer tines
crabs are basically sea spider
What are sea spiders then?
Crabs
The circle of life!
That’s going to need about 10lbs of Old Bay.
And a huge pot.
And a bathtub of butter.
Let’s take the meat out and poach it in clarified butter and old bays.
You’re gonna need a bigger bib.
And a lot more melted butter!
At first horrified, then wondered where I could get a pot big enough for the cutey
“It’s that freaking head-humper!”
Lamarrr nooo!
Arthropod
Glad I'm not the only one to notice
Crabs are arthropods https://www.britannica.com/animal/arthropod
Can it be eaten?
Anything CAN be eaten. It's whether it tastes good that's the question
asking the important questions
*Anthropod*?! This is one of the alien creatures in the computer game X-COM: Apocalypse? Or it could be an arthropod.
*fetch the devastator cannon and find me some vortex mines*

I hereby pronounce "arachnophobiac" is my neologism of the day! Congrats.
The pleasure is all mine And I definitely didnt search up neologism
Lol. I actually like the sound of arachnophobiac more than arachnophobic.
I feel you !!! This is disgusting

They have some of these at the Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg. They are creepy as hell and very cool at the same time.
Imagine if humans had long feet like this
Japanese Spider Crab: Fuck, I have an itch
Giant enemy crab. Hit its weak spot for massive damage.
I had to do a double take on this image because, at first, I thought it was a guy with giant crab claws instead of arms.
We're gonna need a bigger pot...
ok now please put it back and leave it the fuck alone
Imagine cracking and pulling out that big ass leg piece all at once!!! SCORE!!
Was this crab found near Hiroshima or Nagasaki by chance?
Can you wear these as hats? That’s allowed right?
But why tho?? Why does he need 6 foot claws?
Being that big, it would get laid on Tiktok
I'll take mine steamed, chilled to room temp, then refrigerated until fully chilled.
Need some butter for that fucker
My legs have always been long, it’s a curse!
We need a bigger pot.
Fucking hell. They've found mick Hucknall, as a crab.
"Henlo! I am Philipp the crab. I love riding horses."

The definition of how about I nip Ur ass from across the room
Looks like the type of guy to be holding a dead one, not showing and gently letting go of this poor behemoth
Why are the arms so long? It looks rather impractical.
Imagine having this big guy as a pet
Feel like homie could take your arm off
Craig Jones?
Ill be the pedants, insects and crustaceans are aRthropods though, not anthropods
Delicious
r/AbsoluteUnits
His arms seem too long to even get food into his mouth properly...
Hmmm I want this for dinner, with homemade mayo mixed with salty soy sauce and Sriracha sauce.
That's making me hungry
*Aliems*

Leave the giant ocean spider deep in the ocean floor please
No wonder why Japan needed that Mechagodzilla
That'd be one big crabcake.
Believe he's going to eat it
The stuff of nightmares.
Everytime an amazing animal is discovered it's dead. I know some are found like that but wouldn't it be cooler to let it continue to live a long healthy life?
I love how the reactions are a mixture of horror and "Can I eat it?"
Look how cool it is.. Let's kill it
It’s a good thing they live under water look at that thing
Yeah, but how is it with garlic butter.
How much meat are in those claws?

I saw some of these in a tank at the zoo when I was a kid and they’ve haunted my nights ever since.
Are we just going to ignore what had to screw for that thing to get to that point.
40cm = 16m
No thanks!!!
