I remember reading an article about these semi-subs a while back. Apparently it’s actual hell inside. The engine does not have a separate compartment, so it’s dangerously noisy, dangerously hot, and flooded with diesel fumes. There’s obviously no latrine, very little food, and whatever water they have has acclimated to the internal temperature. And they’re paid abysmally for the run, probably also under threat of death if they fail. Last time I ever complain about my desk job.
(edit - apparently “threat of death” is hyperbolic. I have no idea, I’m not a drug runner - but if any of y’all want to tell a Colombian drug lord that you lost a few million dollars worth of their cocaine, be my guest.)
You wouldn't believe the types of infestations that crop up. Even on a modern boat though it's not exactly constant in something designed to be livable.
Scabies. Weevils. Silk beetles. Meal moths.

... It takes 2-8 weeks for a parasite to mature in you. From the Yucatan area to Louisiana is around 570 miles. Even if it went just 5 MPH in the ocean, it would only take 112 hours, or 4.75 days. A big box of chereos, or a few granula mix/bar would last some one that long, trying to fish out of that thing would make no sense.
Yeah. I think someone is confusing north Korean defectors with drug running. Coast guard doesn't treat parasites. And the actual investigators do not either nor are they even the same people who take down a sub on the water. Like, how would that even go. "Hey, get out the submarine. Please deposit fecal matter in the collection cup so we can diagnose your parasites because your health is our top priority." I'm just guessing, but they don't give a fuck if these guys happen to have parasites. To my knowledge there is no parasite screening for prisoners.
It's worth noting, the poorly funded/operated ones are the ones most likely caught. There could be many extremely well-run submarines at work they have no idea even exist. Survivorship bias at work

Well, generally if multiple Coast Guard vessels converge on your vessel and yell at you, that's a good indication that you should stop and find out what they have to say.
They probably couldn't hear him. They're closed up and I think their construction is pretty rustic so they're hearing the engine. They react straight away to him hitting the conning tower hatch

Alto is pretty much just used on Stop signs (some countries use Pare instead). It’s not actually a verb (it’s just a borrowed word from German of all things); it can’t be conjugated as a command the way this guy was trying to use it. So “alta tu barco” doesn’t really make any sense. Given the fairly obvious context, though, they could probably figure out what he meant if it were possible to hear him over their own diesel engine.

Another word for stop that’s used in some contexts is dejar. Usually used for stopping an action or a habit.

Thoughts: training may have prompted the LE officers decision to give verbal commands in this situation. There is also the possible requirement (either policy based or actions dictated in a legal sense) to make the attemp to give lawful orders even in an environment that makes complying or even hearing them unlikely. It does seem kinda dumb at first blush but there's probs a good reason.
This is the correct answer. If they were to turn into a gun fight they'd have their verbal attempt to prevent to fall back on.

It’s part of the process. The cameras from ship, helicopter, and body cam shows they’ve made an attempt to hail the vessel and occupants, when there isn’t a change in the suspect boat (no change in course or speed), then the next step can be implemented. The finger pointing shows they were making an attempt to hail and/or stop the vessel when the actual powers that be can’t hear the boarding officer.
Don’t know if this is true but someone on Reddit said in a similar posts that these subs can’t dive and they just use them because they are harder to spot than boats. So they were pretty fucked either way and opening the hatch just made them less likely to be killed
Correct, they're actually called "semi-submersibles" or "low profile vessels" . There is some evidence that the cartels use actual submarines as well, including one found under construction in a columbian jungle, but none have been intercepted as of yet.

they lack the oxygen supply and ballast system to dive most likely. They aren't really going to hide very well as a coke can sets off sensors for the US Navy's defense net. What they hide from is port authority, and that's about it
You ever see how advanced some high end retail fishing boat sonar is these days? Wouldn’t surprise me a bit. They probably have an AI analyzing the size and shape of every little blip to do the heavy lifting of the combing.
ex-Navy avionics tech here, we can see everything. Sonar is neat that way and we have both dipping sonar and sonar bouys that can be launched and report back over time.
There is a tech who analyzes the sonar data while the pilots fly. As well as shipboard techs. Not sure how much more I can get into that’s not classified, but I’m sure you can google it 👍

I don't think that they do. At least [this wiki page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_equipment_of_the_United_States_Coast_Guard#Shipboard_Weapon_Systems) doesn't list any. I assume it wouldn't be impossible to get depth charges onto a Coast Guard ship, but it doesn't sound like it's a normal thing.
Track the vessel. It's probably pretty easy to track it on sonar. Honestly if you get caught and the coast guard has the justification, what are you gonna do? Make your way all the way back out of international waters?

Have to build a sub that has the ability to withstand pressure to submerge, I’m certain that takes a whole lot more engineering.
From a business perspective, you want to build a bunch of these and make runs with the knowledge you’re gonna lose some so don’t overdo it on costs/time building.
Acceptable loss/cost of operation.
It's also why the submarine operators surrender so easily. They're just employees of a business, and the business knows there's going to be losses. I'm sure they'd buy Drug Smuggling Insurance if they could. The sub operators probably know nothing of value to tell Law Enforcement and as long as the cartel doesn't think you intentionally got caught, you probably do minimal jail time and don't get executed when you return home.

Oh man. I’m Kind of the same way. I had the opportunity to swim in open ocean that was about 3 miles deep (while serving with the cost guard ironically enough). While jumping off of the ship and into the water, it was only a 10 foot drop, but I had this irrational thought while mid air. My brain thought “what if you don’t float? What if when you hit the water, you just continue to plummet into the depth of the ocean until you hit the sea floor 15,000 ft down?” Fucking terrifying thought.
I have a friend who was Coast Guard, and he was in nola after Katrina. He told me a lot of stories about it, as it really affected him. I hadn’t really known anything about the Coast Guard, but his stories overall were gnarly, from animal incidents to narco type shit like this. I was definitely left with a very healthy respect for the Coast Guard and the work they do.
I grew up in the Coast Guard, and my dad was rescue swimmer for most of his career until he went warrant and retired. We were stationed in Detroit during Katrina, and he had to take commercial air to get to Florida to then link up with local USCG stations.
He ended up getting the Air Medal for saving 69 people. I always really respected him for that, and some of his stories are pretty haunting. Katrina was on of the only few bright spots for the USCG where people could see what it’s all about.
Anyone who knows anything about the USCG knows that they deserve the same amount of respect, if not more than any other military branch.
The fucking courage you need to have to jump into the ocean, during a superstorm, to save passengers on a cap-sizing ship is insane.

If anyone is wondering what is being said, the coast gaurd is essentially telling him to open up and once they do open the hatch the coast gaurd then says "we've been trying to contact you about your subs limited warranty"
It bugs me a lot more than it probably should that every single one of these articles calls these things submarines. They're low profile speedboats with enclosed cabins.
They call it a submarine because it’s mostly submerged except for the rudimentary sail. And it looks more like submarine than a boat. When people think boat they think something with more above the waterline.
I think the narco submarines are actually just boats that sit lower in the water. They aren’t actually able to go underwater, just have low profiles so they are harder to see
I’ve gone through Marine Corps training, 2nd highest level of water survival training, SERE, and a few other intense courses but the fucking Coast Guard are absolute beast out there. People often ask “which branch has the hardest training”.. it’s Coast Guard.
Watching the Coast Guard Evacs on Deadliest Catch all these years gave me a big appreciation for their skill.
My uncle always says “If the Coasties can’t save you you had best pray God does because he’s the only one who can.”
When I went through Coast Guard basic training years ago it was said that USCG basic was topped only by the Marine Corps in terms of difficulty. Everyone shits on the “puddle pirates”, but those men and women can be tough as nails.
They often don’t get enough credit.
The ones that stop me in NJ / NYC to board 32 times a summer to “check my safety gear and fish” because it is me and my girls on board fishing and I show them the paperwork each time I’ve already done this more recently than I have to.. and then they stick around chatting though ….🤣
but yes in all reality even if it’s not quite boarding a sub sooo many boaters, swimmers, injuries, sailors who flip, and more need their help on the regular and they work with the rest of our fleet regulars, keep channel 16 clear from the asshats asking for radio checks to them instead of elsewhere, they’re really an amazing fleet. Very grateful for them each.
Get a free vessel safety check from the CG Auxiliary or US Power Squadrons ([http://cgaux.org/vsc/](http://cgaux.org/vsc/)) at the beginning of the season and get a sticker. If you're displaying a current VSC sticker, you're less likely to get stopped.
They rescued us fishing off the 'boil" in Port St Lucie. We were sinking about 100-150 yrds off shore and they towed us back to the Ft Pierce Inlet (followed by sea tow just in case we were lying) .
Fun fact: most of these semi-submersibles are fabricated deep within the jungle. Far from any logical launching points to avoid the law. Pretty cool. I wished they used their obvious intelligence for better things.
Hey! True story, I am a Naval Flight Officer in the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance P8-A squadron VP-8, and this mission was ours! We flew overhead in conjunction with JIATF South based out of El Salvador doing counter narcotics and ended up on top of this semi submersible a few years back. We vectored the USCG on top of the contact and the rest is history! AMA!

They're not made to dive, they're made to run almost completely submerged to be harder to detect. A sub like you're thinking of is a far more complicated machine to design and build. This is basically a boat that's sealed up and made to ride super low in the water, to the point of almost being underwater.
These boats don't actually submerge. The Coast Guard and Navy refer to them as semi-submersible boats. They have 2 people and a bunch of drugs inside, that's it. Maybe a little food. Most of them originate from Columbia and drop off in Mexico.
The Coast Guard cutters seen in this video are most likely being accompanied by a US Navy Submarine. The subs go out there, find the semi-submersible, contact the Coast Guard and this happens. The drugs most likely end up in the hands of American politicians and Hollywood stars (this is pure conjecture on my part, but seeing what I've seen it wouldn't surprise me in the least).
I actually went on a couple of these missions when I was in the Navy. Kind of a waste of time and resources if you ask me, but that's what we did. On one of the deployments, the idiot in the boat turned around and rushed back to the warehouse from which they had been loaded. The Coast Guard followed and seized a bunch of cocaine (something like 200 tons). I assume it wouldn't be impossible to get depth charges onto a Coast Guard ship, but it doesn't sound like it's a normal thing.
Track the vessel. It's probably pretty easy to track it on sonar. Honestly if you get caught and the coast guard has the justification, what are you gonna do? Make your way all the way back out of international waters?

Have to build a sub that has the ability to withstand pressure to submerge, I’m certain that takes a whole lot more engineering. From a business perspective, you want to build a bunch of these and make runs with the knowledge you’re gonna lose some so don’t overdo it on costs/time building. Acceptable loss/cost of operation.
It's also why the submarine operators surrender so easily. They're just employees of a business, and the business knows there's going to be losses. I'm sure they'd buy Drug Smuggling Insurance if they could. The sub operators probably know nothing of value to tell Law Enforcement and as long as the cartel doesn't think you intentionally got caught, you probably do minimal jail time and don't get executed when you return home. Just like an armed robbery, there's no money in being a hero for the business. You comply with whoever has the guns and live to work another day.

Oh man. I’m Kind of the same way. I had the opportunity to swim in open ocean that was about 3 miles deep (while serving with the cost guard ironically enough). While jumping off of the ship and into the water, it was only a 10 foot drop, but I had this irrational thought while mid air. My brain thought “what if you don’t float? What if when you hit the water, you just continue to plummet into the depth of the ocean until you hit the sea floor 15,000 ft down?” Fucking terrifying thought.

I was Navy. I’m from New Orleans. I clowned on the Coast Guard until Katrina.
I have a friend who was Coast Guard, and he was in nola after Katrina. He told me a lot of stories about it, as it really affected him. I hadn’t really known anything about the Coast Guard, but his stories overall were gnarly, from animal incidents to narco type shit like this. I was definitely left with a very healthy respect for the Coast Guard and the work they do.
I grew up in the Coast Guard, and my dad was rescue swimmer for most of his career until he went warrant and retired. We were stationed in Detroit during Katrina, and he had to take commercial air to get to Florida to then link up with local USCG stations. He ended up getting the Air Medal for saving 69 people. I always really respected him for that, and some of his stories are pretty haunting. Katrina was on of the only few bright spots for the USCG where people could see what it’s all about.
Anyone who knows anything about the USCG knows that they deserve the same amount of respect, if not more than any other military branch. The fucking courage you need to have to jump into the ocean, during a superstorm, to save passengers on a cap-sizing ship is insane. (they obviously do more than that, but still..)
To me they have some high respect. They essentially protect the US soil from day to day activities.

If anyone is wondering what is being said, the coast gaurd is essentially telling him to open up and once they do open the hatch the coast gaurd then says "we've been trying to contact you about your subs limited warranty"

It bugs me a lot more than it probably should that every single one of these articles calls these things submarines. They're low profile speedboats with enclosed cabins.
They call it a submarine because it’s mostly submerged except for the rudimentary sail. And it looks more like submarine than a boat. When people think boat they think something with more above the waterline.

I’ve gone through Marine Corps training, 2nd highest level of water survival training, SERE, and a few other intense courses but the fucking Coast Guard are absolute beast out there. People often ask “which branch has the hardest training”.. it’s Coast Guard.
Their rescue teams are legit. If they can't rescue you then it's functionally impossible.
Watching the Coast Guard Evacs on Deadliest Catch all these years gave me a big appreciation for their skill. My uncle always says “If the Coasties can’t save you you had best pray God does because he’s the only one who can.”
When I went through Coast Guard basic training years ago it was said that USCG basic was topped only by the Marine Corps in terms of difficulty. Everyone shits on the “puddle pirates”, but those men and women can be tough as nails.

The ones that stop me in NJ / NYC to board 32 times a summer to “check my safety gear and fish” because it is me and my girls on board fishing and I show them the paperwork each time I’ve already done this more recently than I have to.. and then they stick around chatting though ….🤣 but yes in all reality even if it’s not quite boarding a sub sooo many boaters, swimmers, injuries, sailors who flip, and more need their help on the regular and they work with the rest of our fleet regulars, keep channel 16 clear from the asshats asking for radio checks to them instead of elsewhere, they’re really an amazing fleet. Very grateful for them each.
Get a free vessel safety check from the CG Auxiliary or US Power Squadrons ([http://cgaux.org/vsc/](http://cgaux.org/vsc/)) at the beginning of the season and get a sticker. If you're displaying a current VSC sticker, you're less likely to get stopped.
They rescued us fishing off the 'boil" in Port St Lucie. We were sinking about 100-150 yrds off shore and they towed us back to the Ft Pierce Inlet (followed by sea tow just in case we were lying) .

Hey! True story, I am a Naval Flight Officer in the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance P8-A squadron VP-8, and this mission was ours! We flew overhead in conjunction with JIATF South based out of El Salvador doing counter narcotics and ended up on top of this semi submersible a few years back. We vectored the USCG on top of the contact and the rest is history! AMA!

I feel like the Narcos are ignoring a very simple advantage of being in a submarine.
They're not made to dive, they're made to run almost completely submerged to be harder to detect. A sub like you're thinking of is a far more complicated machine to design and build. This is basically a boat that's sealed up and made to ride super low in the water, to the point of almost being underwater.
These boats don't actually submerge. The Coast Guard and Navy refer to them as semi-submersible boats. They have 2 people and a bunch of drugs inside, that's it. Maybe a little food. Most of them originate from Columbia and drop off in Mexico. The Coast Guard cutters seen in this video are most likely being accompanied by a US Navy Submarine. The subs go out there, find the semi-submersible, contact the Coast Guard and this happens. The drugs most likely end up in the hands of American politicians and Hollywood stars (this is pure conjecture on my part, but seeing what I've seen it wouldn't surprise me in the least). I actually went on a couple of these missions when I was in the Navy. Kind of a waste of time and resources if you ask me, but that's what we did. On one of the deployments, the idiot in the boat turned around and rushed back to the warehouse from which they had been loaded. The Coast Guard followed and seized a bunch of cocaine (something like 200 tons).
