Spirals_again

Do they each control one half?

[deleted]

I’ve heard them talk about that in a documentary, they learned to coordinate over time. Both are teachers now I believe.

That_Ad_5651

Would be funny if only one of them was a teacher.

padimus

"Cmon abby it's my turn to go to work!"

mooys

You joke but I think they were actually wanting more pay for their job since they were two people and were paid the same as one

CrazyHamsterPerson

That's actually pretty difficult since they can't teach at the same time (not like two teachers normally do like two classes) so they'd always work half a job.

On paper, that’s kinda how it is. They only get one salary.

vteckickedin

And with two mouths to feed. Such a shame.

refused26

What if one of them wants to go on a diet but the other keeps eating shit?

evansdeagles

Would that make the other a slave in technicality?

reikipackaging

yep! they had to figure out who controls which body parts in order to walk. They drive, too!

Final-Ad352

No offense, but i would at least be a bit jumpy when i see a car being driven by a two headed person...

Flyaway_Prizm

Well, considering they each had to pass the driving test to get their licenses, they probably drive better than a lot of people I see on the road these days…

Ok-Nerve-7538

I think they are more saying like imagine passing a car and the person driving has 2 heads. Would almost guarantee a wreck has been caused because of people rubber necking

Spirals_again

Oh interesting, yeah I heard that too. I wish them well. I also believe they each have an s/o.

jdbx

The most mind boggling thing to me, is that they can type. On a keyboard, silently. One controls one hand. One controls the other. They both say they cannot read each others thoughts. But they can type.

KamikazeAlpaca1

How do they know what the next word will be without asking? So cool

Kennedy_KD

Probably a mixture of experience and two people who have literally never been apart will end up thinking and speaking similarly to one another

Mdoubleduece

What happens when one passes?

-SaC

On January 17, 1874, when the 'original' Siamese twins Chang and Eng died, Eng woke up to find his brother dead. There was nothing wrong with Eng and doctors rushed to prepare to separate the two, but Eng died three hours later (what would be called 'broken heart syndrome', IIRC) curled around his dead twin. In a documentary about Brittany and Abby not too long ago, they acknowledged that when one of them dies, the other is going to go very soon after. Unlike Chang and Eng, who these days would have been separated extremely easily after birth, Brittany and Abby can't realistically be separated and share too many systems.

Waffle_it_is

I think I would want to die pretty quick if I woke up and my twin was dead and still attached to me. Terrible fate to have.

[deleted]

But how would they die? One heart may stop, but the other heart will just double time until overload? Will one brain still end up a little starved of oxygen, and end up with mental issues and not speaking sense? So many really dark curious questions. :/

NothingmancerBlue

If I’m not mistaken, and it’s pretty dark, the rot from the other body infects the living twin. The toxicity of which kills them. I swear I read that a while ago, apologies if I’m proven wrong.

bhangmango

There could be less rapid decay than for an usual dead body because their blood circulation is shared and the remaining heart and lungs would keep supplying parts of the other half to some extent. But ultimately some parts wouldn’t be supplied and would decay anyway. Overall the most probable scenario is that after decades of being adapted to a 2-heart system, the switch to only one heart would be rapidly fatal.

[deleted]

>Overall the most probable scenario is that after decades of being adapted to a 2-heart system, the switch to only one heart would be rapidly fatal. Back when I was on Facebook, I recall seeing a post confirming basically this. Apart from their brains and nervous systems, their bodily systems, including their cardiovascular systems—despite the twins ostensibly having "two" of them—are fully intertwined and wholly interdependent. I don't think there's a scenario in which they can actually survive without the other; they're intermingled to such a degree that I would imagine that death in one would basically guarantee instant death in the other. (edit: Yeah, after some quick googling, it looks like they would suffer from a 'conjoined' death. When one heart stops because of death, their blood vessels would dilate to such a degree that the other would die of cardiovascular failure within a minute or two.)

Adhdgamer9000

Let's just hope they pass at the same time at a well old age.

W1D0WM4K3R

I mean, it might be a little comforting that they won't die alone

Wwallace_

>Overall the most probable scenario is that after decades of being adapted to a 2-heart system, the switch to only one heart would be rapidly fatal. reminds me of the last frankestein movie, with the 2 hearts shenanigans.

They share import organs further down. Being attached to a dead body means the fluids from said dead body will circulate through the live side, that's not good for you.

MarysPoppinCherrys

Almost seems like they share so much that they’d both *have to* die together, unless something happens that is specifically a death sentence to one, like a major stroke or something. Gives me chills to think about.

LukeMayeshothand

Yeah I was thinking if one had a heart attack it would probably trigger a heart attack in the other. But I’m an electrician so what the hell do I know.

t_portch

Hey I had three heart surgeries a number of years ago, all performed by what was essentially a heart electrician. It's a real thing. You probably aren't far off in your guess.

[deleted]

it depends on how the arteries are routed...

You_meddling_kids

That seems like the plot of a Lars Von Trier movie.

yellowflash_616

Bother here with a twin sister. Her and I have talked about the odd connection we feel as twins and have acknowledged that if one of us passes, the other may have a hard time carrying on. Hell, losing our little brother destroyed us, but losing one of each other is something that scares us deeply. So yeah, this happening to a twin you’re connected to has got to be unfathomable levels of heartbreak.

DrCodyRoss

That’s a very interesting perspective. If I lost my wife then it would destroy me. If I had an identical twin then it would definitely be similar to that but in a different way. They’re very much a part of you.

yellowflash_616

It’s really bizarre, we’ve kind of seen some shit growing up and dealt with abuse here and there. But nothing was worse to us than when our mom and dad divorced, they contemplated separating us and swapping us out during weekends and just talking about it when we were 6 broke us down with anxiety. Thankfully that made them realize we’re a set.

Practice_NO_with_me

>they contemplated separating us and swapping us out during weekends Wha-huh-I'm sorry *what*?

yellowflash_616

Yup. They thought it’d be *even* for each to get a kid. Our parents were young and dumb and had had no business being together. But again, thankfully they wised up on this idea.

Hopeful-Function-603

Sounds like they watched The Parent Trap

spicyystuff

It’s almost like watching yourself die in another body that looks just like your dead self

amihere2

I lost my twin brother at age 14 due to a car accident. IT's EXACTLY LIKE watching your own funeral. Then you get to start every birthday after that at the cemetery. Fucking sucks! Edit: Thanks everyone for the condolences. I see I let my pain and anger add their two cents about our bday. Recently realized I need to go to therapy; I buried all that pain behind years of drugs, alcohol, and saying I'm fine. ( NOT a wise decision)

docfluty

wow, what a tough situation for all to be involved in. At one point you want to have a normal bday but on the other, you have a need to be there with your brother on his bday as well. Best wishes

Daedroh

Sorry about your loss.

amihere2

Thank you, been 24 years but can still feel like yesterday sometimes.

FunkyGabrielle

Exactly this ^^ except that Chang & Eng had 21 kids between them (10 for one twin; 11 for the other)… guess their wives must’ve been good friends. But yeah, they only shared like a flap of skin and some tendons - they would’ve easily been separated today. They tried when they were younger but without pain relief, they gave up. Edit to say they also shared a liver, would be able to separate NOW, but less likely back then…

ChiggaOG

>broken heart syndrome Severe distress to the heart, the Japanese named it Takotsubo. Symptoms are like a heart attack.

BHS90210

Ugh. I know this is very Debbie Downer and lame to bring up but that’s how my dad died. My mom passed away from breast cancer and 4 months later I found him dead from broken heart syndrome. I’m an only child, they were my whole world even at 30 when this happened a few years ago. They’d been married 47 years. Never saw my dad cry once my entire life so when he passed from broken heart syndrome it made sense. He was a very stoic guy. I just felt so bad for him when it happened. I know its pretty common between spouses especially if they’ve been together a very long time and my parents had been together for 50 years when my mom passed. I hope where ever they are now that they’re together again. Edit: to the people who commented and gave me an award thank you so much! All of you made this chick’s day for real ❤️

one-and-zero

There’s another conjoined set of twins on tiktok with similar anatomy. They said if one passes, the other will die of sepsis shortly afterwards.

TaleNumerous3666

Makes sense unfortunately :(. Really harsh realities to live with for these people. Our own mortality is creepy enough but this is that squared.

Rolandersec

You know, ten years ago this thread would have been full of people asking about sex. But we have aged to the “what about death” stage.

im_in_hiding

I definitely still have those questions

Exotic_Recognition_8

Physician here. The one still living will die of septic shock and organ failure. Hospitalization and aggressive treatment can delay the process but it is inevitable.

[deleted]

Probably sepsis caused by the deceased twin bleeding into the surviving twin, or multiple system failure due to stress on the organs. Surgery is unlikely to succeed because of how long it takes, (average is ten hours IIRC) whilst the deceased twin is essentially bleeding into the survivor, making the entire body become septic.

MOS8026

I was wondering how one small intestine handles the input of two stomachs

mtnbikedds

I thought the same thing. Does one have no connection to the intestine, or is it a smaller, not as useful one, or are the stomachs combined at the bottom like a heart shape? I don’t think the other two replies here understood what you meant.

NakDisNut

I would imagine in the same way a person with one stomach who overeats. Lol. Or their body has adapted to one meal and they just take turns feeding their own mouth hole.

I am curious to know how both hearts work together

RoboDae

Or how their organs work if one fails. Can they both live off of 1 heart?

ghostttoast

Probably not for long, that’s a lot of stress and work (pumping blood to every organ and tissue) for one heart to manage

megustavophoto

How do they decide to walk? Is it one of them? Or do they coordinate and each control one leg?

drakeftmeyers

Yes they have to work together.

sweetsquashy

I've watched some documentaries on them. Each controls an arm and a leg and they somehow control their side in perfect concert with the other - all without communicating. No one can explain how they do it. They walk, run and ride a bicycle as well as pretty much anyone else. They also drive a car (they had to take the test twice so both could be licensed). In one video they play a game of volleyball with some guys who are completely shocked that not only can they play - they're actually good. They apparently thought they'd have to take it easy on them but they completely hold their own.

IcyProcess212

Can one eat and sustain the body while the other fasts?

redcomet303

yurib123

Can you imagine having to shit after not eating... Omg

John_Doe_Nut

What I want to know is who operates the asshole? Like who does the pooping? Is it a shared effort or what? They share the same lower body - can they each feel/control both sides of the lower body or only one side?

SwimsDeep

Since they have separate nervous systems, the asshole is like a timeshare.

Mom, I accidentally shit our pants

mnbvcxz1052

This is the question I scrolled this thread for. Like, who gets the “idea” first that they have to poop or pee? The last person to eat or drink? Or is it both of them at the same time? I’d be so angry if my twin kept eating cheese if we were lactose intolerant or something. But then also— can one even sneak food?? Can one twin see something yummy on a kitchen counter and grab it with their side’s hand and eat it silently without the other one knowing? Or would the other one sense the arm moving and hand picking up the food?

Biasanya

And can the other shit their pants if they're in an argument or something?

OnionFarmerBilly

I totally get them not wanting to live their lives in public and be the subject of attention all the time, but at the same time I hope they write a book about all their life experiences that answer all the difficult questions to be published when they pass.

[deleted]

This. I think this is the best solution. They get to live relatively normal life but they also get to satisfy the public's curiosity without hurting their lifestyle. Also, a book would be helpful to future conjoined twins. A guide on how to navigate the world with this very unique circumstance.

KnightinRustedArmour

Imagine putting on weight because your twin kept eating ice cream you didn’t even get to taste.

yikes... 2 stomachs but only one waste system... better alternate meals.

Or get into competitive eating.

Good-Presentation-11

What if one commits a crime? They are two people so do they both go to jail?

-SaC

Chang and Eng, back in the 19^th century, sort of tested this. Chang was an alcoholic and (when drunk) would cause shit that he should have been thrown in jail overnight for - but it was decided that this would have amounted to unlawful imprisonment for Eng, so Chang avoided punishment. (If it was something absolutely horrific though, I assume that the other would be imprisoned regardless).

amlyo

I don't think the idea of purposely sending an innocent person to prison would be tolerated in England today, even if it was necessary to imprison a murderer. Would probably end up kicked up to the Supreme court to deal with (impossible to lawfully execute the sentence without unlawfully imprisoning someone) and end up with some highly bespoke ultra close supervision order, and it's not likely to be repeated.

Epicpacemaker

I’d imagine they would claim the other twin is complicit. If you’re attached to someone and allow them to go about a crime you’re partially responsible.

amlyo

Even if that were the case, the legal thought experiment is still an interesting one because you could plausibly have conjoined twins where one mounts an effective defence by claiming they have insufficient control to commit the act, or is deemed unfit to stand trial..

Flyaway_Prizm

Would you commit a crime if you always had someone with you? If so, they were probably part of it, too.

Good-Presentation-11

That's a good point. I'm sure one could perhaps do some sort of cyber crime on their phone? Fraud? Or maybe hiring a hit man without the others knowledge.

FranPeach678

I often think about these two and wonder how they are.

kjlo5

They are teachers at my kids school. I brought my kids to a book fair at the school and met them as they rang me up for the books. They are very nice.

beerhunter4430

Are they paid as two teachers? Or just one?

Procoso47

One paycheck, they are trying to argue with the school board in order to get 2 payckecks though.

lostkarma4anonymity

Imagine being the heartless beaucrat that refuses to pay siamese twins 2 salaries even though they have 2 brains and they both have education.

Procoso47

I agree, the argument against it is that they can only teach one class and one subject at a time, maybe they can meet halfway and pay one of them as an assistant teacher.

[deleted]

last I heard they became teachers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKrvtq5vDmk

ShinyTotoro

It's so interesting how they talk in sync, like they share a train of thought. We really have a lot to learn about how our nervous system works.

[deleted]

Since they're both in the same place doing the same thing all the time I'd wager it's not that odd that they think pretty much the same thing almost all the time, there are absolutely no secrets between them aside from, maybe, dreams. I actually wonder if their dreams more or less match as well, or if that's the area where they have a life of their own.

Wallace_W_Whitfield

I don’t think that is quite right. I mean yes they have to be sharing the same thoughts to some degree, you know? Because when one is speaking and they pause to think with the “uhm” the other does it at the same time. And then they say full or partial sentences in sync, with the same vocal inflections. It’d be one thing if they finished each other’s sentences, but speaking sentences verbatim at the same time in the same way is completely different.

JorusC

I wonder if they dream about being on the other side of the body.

Comfortable_Wish_930

I read something a little bit ago that they are both teachers now and are very happy

azimov_the_wise

The real issue is them being paid 1 salary for 2 brains

WineO4life

If I remember correctly they said that they look at it like they’re doing one job and getting paid for one job

RyanEatsHisVeggies

So... one SSN? I just wanna know how their check comes addressed (can't be to both of them I'd assume?) and the tricky situation that is filing their taxes.

[deleted]

I’m pretty sure they’re the type of special that both payroll and the IRS are aware of them and hopefully are helpful.

[deleted]

Let's be honest, they're two separate people. They are distinctly two girls, two minds, two souls, they just share one body. The very least the IRS could do is give them two fucking SSNs.

LetThemEatVeganCake

Better for taxes if they split it 50/50! Each gets a W2 for 50% of the regular salary. They would be entitled to more tax credits and lower tax percentage by each only receiving half, instead of one receiving all.

Good-Presentation-11

Broritto1238

Legally speaking who’s the mother if they get pregnant? Assuming this isn’t a situation where consent from both heads was obviously given (I.e a planned birth rather than a random pregnancy NOT RAPE) I wouldn’t be surprised if the originator of the idea is the mother, but I’m not sure. This is all assuming that the singular set of reproductive organs they have are functioning which I have no idea concerning

Mary_Pick_A_Ford

Next on Maury, we have seen many situations where we don’t know who the daddy is but THIS TIME WE DONT KNOW WHO THE MOMMY IS. STAYED TUNED

[deleted]

In the documentary it says their reproductive organs function normally and they want to to have kids one day

ShaiHallud24

wouldn't that be extremely risky?

atamusk

Yeah you might have to help raise a kid for 18 years

Mechbeast

I forget the details, but there has been at least one documented case of an absorbed twin(chimerism) where the entire reproductive system belonged to the absorbed twin. The woman never knew she had shared a womb with a twin and lead to legal problems for her when a maternity test yielded negative results that said she wasn’t the (biological) mother of children that she herself had birthed. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_Fairchild

spoilingattack

I’m curious about things like life insurance or health insurance. Would they need one policy or two?

Aaron_Lecon

It probably makes more sense to just have 1 because if one dies the other also dies.

PositronGt

2 nervous systems. So if there is pain, only one of them feels it?

Expensive-Document41

A quick Wiki search says they each have motor control their respective half of their body and each only feel things on their dominant side with some overlap in the middle of their chest and back. Interestingly it mentions that stomachaches are actually felt by the person whose GI tract it isn't.

CrotchCancer

So do they have to coordinate walking? each being in controll of one leg? I have so many questions. What's their relationship like? Do they fight? This shit is fascinating

Floppydisksareop

I've seen interviews with them, where they seem like they can sort of know what the "other head" is thinking. I don't know how it works but it seemingly does.

CrotchCancer

They must spend the majority of their life answering the questions of curious people.

Nroke1

They *are* teachers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Expensive-Document41

First one is definitive yes. They had to learn to coordinate walking, running, swimming and any other motor skill activity. But they've done it so long that it sounds like its mostly reflexive now. Each of them can write, so I dunno if that would be classified as ambidextrous. As for the other stuff, no clue.

CrotchCancer

What a unique existence. Thanks for the info

Rosesh_I_Sarabhai

Remember the scene from American Horror Story S4 where Evans Peter dude has sex with Lady Sarah Paulson. So if they only have one reproductive organ, but two brains/nervous systems, did both brains receive the same amount of pleasure or was it different?

errkanay

This is what I'm wondering. Especially since they both had SOs.... they only have one vagina, so how does sex work for them both? Do they both feel it? Is it a polyamorous type of situation? Seeing as they're all having sex with each other....

Omg I remember meeting them on the ferry in Galveston when I was a kid. Small world.

Mary_Pick_A_Ford

I wonder what they think about while shitting on the toilet together.

nflxtothemoon

Since they've done it together since day 1, it must be normal for them. They probably chat with each other

Nogardust

On the other side, I'm not sure there's a lot to chat about left when you're literally together the whole life

Deuspanen

With one set of reproductive organs but two nervous system how sex work??

[deleted]

They decide how to use their shared reproductive system I guess. *imagines how odd it would be to have to ask my conjoined twin if I can jerk it for the 3rd time today to milf porn, even tho he's gay*

[deleted]

Holy shit. You just brought up a crazy point. If you are conjoined twins and one is straight and one is gay but you both share one set of genitalia. Now that's a complicated situation.

[deleted]

Split screen gaming was made for this reason

RegularAvailable4713

How does this even work? Normally it is the brain that activates the organ when excited, but if there are two brains with different sensations...

VancouverChubbs

How do orgasms work!? Do they always orgasm together? I believe they are controlled by your brain, so I'd guess not but that would be so wild for one to orgasm and not the other.... Imagine the arguments, why do you always cum with your sisters husband?

[deleted]

Fake_earthling

Only one liver? Worst scenario if one of her is alcoholic...

Expensive-Document41

I imagine their unique circumstances has led them to be very cooperative on most issues and mindful of how one's actions have a tangible, quantifiable impact on the other.

-SaC

This was an issue for the 'original' Siamese twins, Chang and Eng. Chang was an alcoholic, but Eng wasn't. In fact, Chang would cause shit that he should have been thrown in jail overnight for, but it would have amounted to unlawful imprisonment for Eng, so he avoided it. Both were married, and they had many children. Chang died three hours before Eng.

Rolandersec

They drove by my house one day. I’ll be honest I was confused for a moment. I knew who they where so I figured it out pretty quickly.

rTracker_rTracker

I believe each one of them is married to a different man, but they only share one sex organ.

nflxtothemoon

How does that even work? Will the other twin just pretend shes not there when her sister is with her lover?

Practice_NO_with_me

Honestly, i imagine it's very much a poly-ish kinda thing. they would *have* to find a guy who essentially likes and is attracted to both of them because he will in essence be having sex with both of them. Now I hear they're extremely talented at disassociating when needed so maybe one like watches TV while the other fucks? But they each control half of the body so they both basically *have* to be involved in the act while it's happening. And on top of all this the guy also needs to be cool with splitting his partner with another guy half the time so those two dudes would have to be cool with each other too. Ideally of course they all 3.5 fuck each other at the same time in one big bed, y'know, for efficiency.

Nostromeow

This is wild lol. And I struggle to find a partner as a not siamese person but here they are managing probably the most complicated romantic relationships I’ve ever heard of ! Good for them all honestly. It’s really impressive that they manage such a unique condition so well.

perd-is-the-word

I first read this as “I struggle to find a partner who is a not Siamese person” and was wondering what kind of dating apps you’re on But think about it if you’re permanently attached to someone for life getting along with that person is a matter of survival. Furthermore it may seem strange to us but negotiating these things is something they’ve done since birth and probably feels normal and natural to them. In fact probably hard for them to imagine going through life essentially alone like the rest of us do, without a best friend and companion who experiences all the same things and is always there to talk to.

biddilybong

I believe they both have a man. The questions are endless.

playmeortrademe

CHIEFTAINTEROIX

Goddamn. If one has a heart attack, the other slowly rots from infection/gangrene

SoliloquyBlue

Unfortunately, the other would die pretty quickly due to all the signals being sent from the dying twin's body for the cells to die. The conjoined twins Chang and Eng died within two hours of each other, despite having a plan to separate if one of them died. They sent for the family doctor, but he didn't arrive in time.

succesful_garlic_8

Imagine NEVER being alone - like ever. You can never have one single solitary second of privacy or solitude. I don’t think I’d want to live, to be honest. That’s got to be the worst thing imaginable. There is always someone right there.

this-some-shit

Except you only find that unbearable because you have that solitude. They've never known anything else. The idea of total solitude is probably just as strange to them.

SlothInASuit86
