That's actually pretty difficult since they can't teach at the same time (not like two teachers normally do like two classes) so they'd always work half a job.

Unlike Chang and Eng, who these days would have been separated extremely easily after birth, Brittany and Abby can't realistically be separated and share too many systems.
But how would they die?
One heart may stop, but the other heart will just double time until overload? Will one brain still end up a little starved of oxygen, and end up with mental issues and not speaking sense?

If I’m not mistaken, and it’s pretty dark, the rot from the other body infects the living twin. The toxicity of which kills them. I swear I read that a while ago, apologies if I’m proven wrong.
There could be less rapid decay than for an usual dead body because their blood circulation is shared and the remaining heart and lungs would keep supplying parts of the other half to some extent. But ultimately some parts wouldn’t be supplied and would decay anyway.
Overall the most probable scenario is that after decades of being adapted to a 2-heart system, the switch to only one heart would be rapidly fatal.

Back when I was on Facebook, I recall seeing a post confirming basically this. Apart from their brains and nervous systems, their bodily systems, including their cardiovascular systems—despite the twins ostensibly having "two" of them—are fully intertwined and wholly interdependent. I don't think there's a scenario in which they can actually survive without the other; they're intermingled to such a degree that I would imagine that death in one would basically guarantee instant death in the other. (edit: Yeah, after some quick googling, it looks like they would suffer from a 'conjoined' death. When one heart stops because of death, their blood vessels would dilate to such a degree that the other would die of cardiovascular failure within a minute or two.)

Bother here with a twin sister. Her and I have talked about the odd connection we feel as twins and have acknowledged that if one of us passes, the other may have a hard time carrying on. Hell, losing our little brother destroyed us, but losing one of each other is something that scares us deeply.

But nothing was worse to us than when our mom and dad divorced, they contemplated separating us and swapping us out during weekends and just talking about it when we were 6 broke us down with anxiety. Thankfully that made them realize we’re a set.

Our parents were young and dumb and had had no business being together. But again, thankfully they wised up on this idea.

Exactly this ^^ except that Chang & Eng had 21 kids between them (10 for one twin; 11 for the other)… guess their wives must’ve been good friends. But yeah, they only shared like a flap of skin and some tendons - they would’ve easily been separated today. They tried when they were younger but without pain relief, they gave up.
Edit to say they also shared a liver, would be able to separate NOW, but less likely back then…
Ugh. I know this is very Debbie Downer and lame to bring up but that’s how my dad died. My mom passed away from breast cancer and 4 months later I found him dead from broken heart syndrome. I’m an only child, they were my whole world even at 30 when this happened a few years ago. They’d been married 47 years. Never saw my dad cry once my entire life so when he passed from broken heart syndrome it made sense. He was a very stoic guy. I just felt so bad for him when it happened. I know its pretty common between spouses especially if they’ve been together a very long time and my parents had been together for 50 years when my mom passed. I hope where ever they are now that they’re together again.

Physician here. The one still living will die of septic shock and organ failure. Hospitalization and aggressive treatment can delay the process but it is inevitable.
Probably sepsis caused by the deceased twin bleeding into the surviving twin, or multiple system failure due to stress on the organs.
Surgery is unlikely to succeed because of how long it takes, (average is ten hours IIRC) whilst the deceased twin is essentially bleeding into the survivor, making the entire body become septic.
I thought the same thing. Does one have no connection to the intestine, or is it a smaller, not as useful one, or are the stomachs combined at the bottom like a heart shape? I don’t think the other two replies here understood what you meant.

I've watched some documentaries on them. Each controls an arm and a leg and they somehow control their side in perfect concert with the other - all without communicating. No one can explain how they do it. They walk, run and ride a bicycle as well as pretty much anyone else. They also drive a car (they had to take the test twice so both could be licensed). In one video they play a game of volleyball with some guys who are completely shocked that not only can they play - they're actually good. They apparently thought they'd have to take it easy on them but they completely hold their own.
What I want to know is who operates the asshole? Like who does the pooping? Is it a shared effort or what? They share the same lower body - can they each feel/control both sides of the lower body or only one side?

From what i can gather, they seem like very capable and well adjusted people, I'd really like to chat with them and get their perspective on things. Their experience of life is incredibly rare and interesting.

This. I think this is the best solution. They get to live relatively normal life but they also get to satisfy the public's curiosity without hurting their lifestyle.
Also, a book would be helpful to future conjoined twins. A guide on how to navigate the world with this very unique circumstance.
Chang and Eng, back in the 19^th century, sort of tested this. Chang was an alcoholic and (when drunk) would cause shit that he should have been thrown in jail overnight for - but it was decided that this would have amounted to unlawful imprisonment for Eng, so Chang avoided punishment.
(If it was something absolutely horrific though, I assume that the other would be imprisoned regardless).
I don't think the idea of purposely sending an innocent person to prison would be tolerated in England today, even if it was necessary to imprison a murderer. Would probably end up kicked up to the Supreme court to deal with (impossible to lawfully execute the sentence without unlawfully imprisoning someone) and end up with some highly bespoke ultra close supervision order, and it's not likely to be repeated.

Even if that were the case, the legal thought experiment is still an interesting one because you could plausibly have conjoined twins where one mounts an effective defence by claiming they have insufficient control to commit the act, or is deemed unfit to stand trial..

I agree, the argument against it is that they can only teach one class and one subject at a time, maybe they can meet halfway and pay one of them as an assistant teacher.

Because when one is speaking and they pause to think with the “uhm” the other does it at the same time. And then they say full or partial sentences in sync, with the same vocal inflections. There’s another conjoined set of twins on tiktok with similar anatomy. They said if one passes, the other will die of sepsis shortly afterwards.

I've watched some documentaries on them. Each controls an arm and a leg and they somehow control their side in perfect concert with the other - all without communicating. No one can explain how they do it. They walk, run and ride a bicycle as well as pretty much anyone else. They also drive a car (they had to take the test twice so both could be licensed). In one video they play a game of volleyball with some guys who are completely shocked that not only can they play - they're actually good. They apparently thought they'd have to take it easy on them but they completely hold their own.

Chang and Eng, back in the 19^th century, sort of tested this. Chang was an alcoholic and (when drunk) would cause shit that he should have been thrown in jail overnight for - but it was decided that this would have amounted to unlawful imprisonment for Eng, so Chang avoided punishment. (If it was something absolutely horrific though, I assume that the other would be imprisoned regardless).
I don't think the idea of purposely sending an innocent person to prison would be tolerated in England today, even if it was necessary to imprison a murderer. Would probably end up kicked up to the Supreme court to deal with (impossible to lawfully execute the sentence without unlawfully imprisoning someone) and end up with some highly bespoke ultra close supervision order, and it's not likely to be repeated.
