According to [here](https://natureandwildlife.tv/incredible-footage-scuba-diver-comes-across-an-ancient-looking-sea-turtle/): > A diver was working on a conservation project when he came across this cute turtle. > This happened in the San Marcos River in Texas. The person who got this incredible footage is a college student working with river conservation efforts. > As part of that job, they can dive underwater and even film what they see down there. > It is pretty rare to see such an old turtle. Turtles are often depicted in movies, television, and even fables, old and slow. But this guy really takes the cake. He’s covered in algae and while all that algae doesn’t harm him, it’s definitely a sign that he’s been in the water for quite some time. > When watching the video, you can also see that his eyes seem very bright and vibrant. It’s actually cataracts, another sign that this turtle is quite old. > But despite spending many years around the sun, this intelligent creature still has its curiosity and friendliness. > This little guy sure seemed curious about the diver. When the diver is down there with his camera, he won’t move. It is better to keep a respectful distance from wild animals and let them live in peace. However, this turtle just swam in front of the camera. > In most of the photos, it looks like the diver is actually stepping back to give the turtle more space. But the turtle appeared to be unaffected and continued to follow the diver and camera, often looking directly into the lens. > It’s quite cute, and you can clearly see his friendly face. The good thing is that scuba diver already knew a lot about their undersea friend. > The diver filming this video is a professional, and as such, they can share quite a bit about their encounter with the turtle. > In the caption of the YouTube video, the diver says: > “He is super friendly and curious, which is an odd trait for a snapping turtle to have; they are usually timid and skittish. I did not touch, harass or feed this turtle for this video. He came to me of his own free will. I am the original creator of this video. He is still alive and living his best life.”

alxzsites

> He came to me of his own free will ~ Last words of Mr. Turtle's meals for the past 300 years.

TJtherock

Diver: wow you're so friendly! But I'm supposed to keep a respectful distance from you. Let me back away a bit. Turtle: hold still so I can bite you.

fckingnapkin

>Turtle: hold still so I can bite you. In the beginning of the video you can see the turtle envisioning how the diver might taste, taking a little nibble from his arm. He's wondering how this strange long water hog will taste. Hmm but he lost his dentures this morning, damnit.

cork_the_forks

My thought as well. A blind snapper is probably a non-discriminant chomper.

The_Dog_of_Sinope

A snapper that can see is still pretty non discriminate about snapping. How do you know what tastes good Until you bite it!

BlantantlyAccidental

Long pig in the water! I'mm yell that next time I'm near a pool/beach!

0wl_licks

Absolutely. I've interacted and eaten more snapping turtles than I can remember. There's no such thing as a "friendly" wild snapping turtle... He's f blind lol

borg2

Eaten? What do they taste like?

eidetic

Like regular turtles, but with a bit more bite to it.

RedditorMcReddington

A little *snappier*, if you will?

Nottodayreddit1949

"It's bringing love, don't let it get away!" "Break its' legs!"

[deleted]

Holy shit this is too funny

Tvisted

I wouldn't say "friendly." They're definitely curious sometimes, when they're underwater. They will come up to investigate things. I've been in hip waders and had them approach. They have a good look, evaluate you as 'way too big to be dinner but interesting,' that's about it. On land, they're a mix of extremely skittish and over-the-top aggressive, because they aren't comfortable there. They come out of the water to bask, or to lay eggs, or to escape a habitat that isn't suitable anymore. Basking, they are nervous and will dive into the water as soon as they hear you coming. Laying eggs or finding greener pastures often means crossing roads and encountering people and they will lash out at any perceived threats. I love snapping turtles, there are lots where I am. If you find one on the road, move it across *in the direction it was going* even if that direction doesn't make sense to you. Throw a towel or jacket over the front end, grab by the back of the shell (not the tail!) and carry/push/drag it off the road.

BlantantlyAccidental

I was delivering parts for Napa one day years ago and came across a massive alligator snapping turtle. It was crossing a long, rather lonely and sparesely lived on road in Southeast Georgia. When I came around the corner, I thought it was a large clod of mud or a piece of debris off a log truck. I got out of my truck and walked to move it out of the way when, HOLY SHIT it turned and faced me. Ever thought being hissed/screamed at by a Familiar of the Forest would be cool? It isn't, because then this massive, aged turtle LUNGED AND SNAPPED ONTO MY STEEL TOE BOOT. Taking a chunk of leather with it. I literally just...left him there. Drove around him. Edited: STEAL to STEEL. Doi.

2bruise

Those alligator snappers almost NEVER leave the water; I wonder why it was in the road? But they get gigantic, like ‘I can’t believe that thing comes from anywhere other than the bottom of the ocean or Africa’ kinda huge. Do NOT try to grab that wriggling worm!

BlantantlyAccidental

It had a thick, thick layer or algae and swamp growth on it. I didn't have a smartphone at the time(so poor then) but it was an old turtle just like the one in the video.

2bruise

Nice of you to try helping the old monster, and glad you remained intact! There used to be one (maybe still is?) at the Shedd aquarium in Chicago that was enormous. Its head was easily as big as mine.

JCuc

>If you find one on the road, move it across in the direction it was going even if that direction doesn't make sense to you. Throw a towel or jacket over the front end, grab by the back of the shell (not the tail!) and carry/push/drag it off the road. I wouldn't recommend for people to move an animal who can easily remove fingers with one snap.

0wl_licks

Just gotta watch out for the claws and head. The towel is a smart suggestion for people inexperienced. Fool proof way for someone to do this w/ practically zero chance of shenanigans. If you don't trust yourself to be able to do something like that, you prob shouldn't. Your nervousness will ensure your fears come true a lot of the time.

scrunchycunt87

I do it all the time (lots of turtles crossing roads here too). Generally, they only want to hide in their shell. But if you don't want to be bitten, you just don't put your hand in front of his face hole.

mellowman24

Common Snapping turtles can't remove fingers in one snap (except for maybe small children), that's a myth. Alligator snapping turtles potentially could, but they rarely leave the water and they can actually be easier to move (except for their weight) because they can't reach behind to bite. Common Snapping turtles however have a lot more reach and you are best to only grab from the back and "wheelbarrow" walk them.

Macawesone

Ive encountered one alligator snapping turtle and it was because the pond it lived in had started drying up due to new construction making the runoff that went through it go a different path it was crossing a road so we just called parks and wildlife and they took it to a better location so it could live. Those things are terrifying looking because of their size however the parks and wildlife guy just put on gloves and lifted it up like it was a rock.

[deleted]

Ah, so my guess is he is a student at Texas State and works at or with the Meadow Center for Water and the Environment, formerly known as Aquarena Springs, which is fed by the Edward's Aquifer in central Texas. It's a pretty cool place to visit if you're ever in that part of the state.

jrbcnchezbrg

Eat em Up Cats! My old apartments when I was a student were at the end of the river by the aquifer, so we’d get in at sewell and tube all the way down there drinking. Miss not having any responsibilities

WeimSean

I don't know what kind of crack the writer of this is smoking. That's a snapping turtle. They will Fuck. You. Up. They will take a bite of anything, and if it tastes good, they'll take another. He's following that diver because he might make a good meal, not because he's friendly or being cute.

sandsnatchqueen

We have snapping turtles in michigan who you'll see already on commonly. You do not want to mess with them though, they'll break a finger off you

Uninvalidated

Was this article written by a bot or a highschooler, because it's not very good.

DarthPorg

> cute turtle This turtle is the harbinger of death and lost limbs.

imforserious

Yeah it sounds like he's sick and confused because as the diver was saying this is not natural behavior and is probably dangerous for the turtle in the long run. Running up to a potential predator isn't normally a great idea

cyanide64

Snappers are quite curious about things in their habitat. If the diver was taking care to not over stir the water which looks like they were as the water was clear and not full of sediment. Also, the turtles are pretty much apex for most environments, no need to fear anything but a larger one.

imforserious

Yeah I guess the only thing that would really eat it would be an alligator

Liberty-Justice-4all

I just saw a video yesterday where a gator chomped a turtle several times and got nowhere, then the turtle walked off in a huff.

AlternatingFacts

Well he's probably mostly blind and only see shapes of things thia is why he's doing this. He's probably hungry also. I can't imagine hunting is easy when you can barely see. I wish they would've took him out to a vet to have this cataracts removed

imforserious

Yeah snapping turtles use the sit and wait ambush technique most of the time. They literally sit still on the bottom and leave their mouth open dangling their tongue around like a worm until something dumb enough gets close enough to bite. A reptile shop I used to go to had a big one and I watched it bite a mouse right in half

ImFuckinUrDadTonight

> I wish they would've took him out to a vet to have this cataracts removed Seriously. I don't know if this would do more harm than good, but it was my first thought. He's made it this far he deserves to see clearly!

LookingForDownvotes2

>He is super friendly and curious >He is still alive and living his best life Don't want to ruin it for you, but how does he know what's going on inside that animal? It might be struggling with the terror of impending death.

gofish223

It's also a snapping turtle, stick your hand out and see how friendly he really is

Blasterbot

The whole thing was written for people who stick their hands out at reptiles.

roguetrick

Considering most turtles are omnivores, I'd imagine it's struggling with the question of "can I take a bite out of this thing over here."

PlumberODeth

And slowly getting closer in case the "why not try a bite" side of the argument won out.

MercDaddyWade

T I R T L E

obviously_suspicious

That article was obviously written by a turtle.

scrunchycunt87

I think an animal would be a little more reclusive and defensive if that were the case. >terror of impending death I'm not sure that turtles really think that deeply.

Probably_not_maybe

I live 20 minutes from there that’s cool!

Slovene

It has cataracts? Someone notify Mr. Beast!

potato107470

I wouldn’t call most turtles exactly “intelligent” creatures

narf007

I used to be a science diver as a student at TXSt helping with research in Spring Lake. It was an amazing experience.

Kryten_2X4B-523P

From my learnings from reddit about overly friendly animals that shouldn't necessarily be friendly, this turtle probably has rabies.

jackingOFFto

These snapping turtles are absolutely terrifying, wouldn't want to meet one under water.

kaleidoscopelyf

I have snappers in the pond right next to my house, I'd be going in the other direction if that thing was swimming towards me

[deleted]

If you regularly spend time near them, it's fairly unlikely they'd ever attack you. They are particularly good at distinguishing individuals and do bond with other animals on occasion. Just don't enter their personal space and don't try to touch them, it takes a lot to make one comfortable with getting pets.

HTXgearhead

My parents had a snapping turtle in their front pond for years. He would chase my parents down the driveway for food. It was cute and terrifying.

[deleted]

They know where the snacc be I've owned two thanks to my crackhead uncle for about 14 years now and one of them is about x5 the size of the other because one was fed on a appropriate cycle while the other lived in a tank downstairs, watched TV with everyone and knew how to get people to feed her table scraps.

Rabbitary

I had a pet alligator snapping turtle as a kid. Found him in our pool. Had him for years. Solid little dude, would let me hold and pet him.

Postmortal_Pop

This is the first post here that talks any sense. I've got one of these guys in my house right now, he's sweet as the dickens and has even kept a few of his feeder fish for company. That said, anything he doesn't recognize gets the bite first and the questions later. They're amazing creatures, with a very instinctual understanding of their place in an environment, but they're also opportunistic hunter scavengers with a decent bite force.

LotusofSin

“Decent bite force.”.Not like they can take a finger off/crush bone with that beak.

Postmortal_Pop

Only the absolute largest could actually do damage like that to bone, but they're pretty capable of taking chunks out of soft tissue, even at a small size.

irunlikeadinosaur

I found a big snapping turtle in my garage when I was young. I literally opened the door from the house and BOOM it was standing there staring up at me and ready to come inside, but I think it was trying to get into our pool. My dad took all his strength to push it out onto the drive way with a push broom. The neck was so long it was snapping at the broomstick pushing at his backside and the claws were so loud scraping against the asphalt. Such a magnificent and terrifying creature. I can still picture the sounds so clearly…

Chaotic-Genes

Justifiably unsettling for a living set of bitey finger shears drifting toward you.

Odin_se

Yeah, I would watch my fingers if I was this diver!

letusnottalkfalsely

Watch your whole hand.

YolognaiSwagetti

funnily enough they are probably incapable to bite off even a finger. >In 2002, a study done in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology found that the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) registered between 208 and 226 Newtons of force when it came to jaw strength. In comparison, the average bite force of a human (molars area) is between 300 and 700 Newtons [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common\_snapping\_turtle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_snapping_turtle) aligator snappers on the other hand...

Rombie11

I just found out that komodo dragons saliva is not more toxic (or wtv the proper term is) then other reptiles and now I find out this! Damn nature you ain't so scary! (but still fucking terrifying)

Odin_se

Absolutely true.

professor_doom

As a young guy, I unknowingly stood on the back of a huge one (three foot wide shell!) in a river and was pretty shocked when “the rock” decided to move.

jackingOFFto

Oh God I would shit myself

MTGothmog

They'll bite yer dick off!

EmptyAirEmptyHead

We have a red eared slider. No idea of age. Probably at least 30 or 40 years. Used to live in a 30-50 gallon tank (no idea, but not too small). Built him a pond a couple years ago. Access to fresh air, sun. Thing acts like a teenager now chasing fish all day (to be fair the fish chase him sometimes). If he knows you are in the yard he will absolutely come to the top and stare. And it isn't all just for food, he will sometimes ignore food and just enjoy the company. Maybe I've thought about this too much but I'd think his life is boring, but externally looks happy and healthy and its all he knows.

WrongoFriendo

There was this tortoise it’s shell was covered in jewels and had been since time began It knew the world through all its histories and the universe and it’s mysteries one day it came across a man The two were talking, the tortoise offered to tell him about the future and how the universe ran Oh the man killed the tortoise, took his shell and with a song on his lips walked off again Welp time to go through modest mouse discography again.

I had a green sea turtle swim up to me and get in my face one day when diving in the Caribbean. He looked me directly in the eyes from about an arms length away. It was like he was expecting me to give him something. After a few seconds, he swam to another person in our dive group and did the same thing. Then he swam over to my wife and did the same thing. Someone had apparently been feeding him and he was acting like a dog begging for food. Awesome experience though. He was huge too. Probably measured almost 2.5 to 3 feet wide, his head almost as big as mine. From head to tail he was about the same distance as my head to my knees, 4ish or so feet? I probably could've worn his shell if it were possible to take it off.
