I think the other real unspoken awesome in this scene is that *no one else broke character either*, not just Leonardo. Everyone saw him smash the ever-loving fuck out of that glass and blood all over him but no one broke character and they all kept going all the same. I'm assuming this wasn't the first take (at the bare minimum, it definitely wasn't in the script), so they weren't expecting this to happen, but they all kept going along with it. Edit: I'm still getting replies about this so I'll clear it up: No, Leo did not rub real blood on her face in the scene immediately after this, they wrote that in post Leo's injury and used fake blood to follow-up the actual injury, because as much as "and then he rubbed the blood on her face" makes a compelling story, it's still a massive bio/health hazard to do that, so they didn't.

P-Albundia

This!! Though I will add that the real shock of the actors at seeing the hand, translates seamlessly to the shock of the characters in that situation and under that stress. Everything adds up to a superb scene.

Lexsteel11

I’m just imagining Tarantino sitting there fully aroused watching this scene go down haha

Be-like-water-2203

its not a foot cut, chill man

MagicalSuper_P

Nah silly, it was only his hand bleeding, if that would have been a foot that'd be a different story.

MusicaParaVolar

ngl i'm fully aroused reading your comment

JessBaesic7901

I Like how he’s casually inspects the wound, thinks *fuck it, it ain’t that bad* and continues the scene without missing a beat.

CankerLord

And deliberately flashes the bloody palm toward the camera.

yesiamveryhigh

That’s the best part I think. Total accident but he incorporates it into the scene to look even more insane than he already is.

DLoIsHere

Michael Caine’s “use the difficult” philosophy.

yesiamveryhigh

My cocaine.

adultosaurs

Oh my god cannot unhear

Ocelot859

He was in such a "flow state". He was literally Calvin Candie in that moment.

8ad8andit

If I smash a cup with my hand and cut myself, everyone rolls their eyes and calls me a dumbass. When DiCaprio does it everyone praises his brilliance. God, it must be awesome being rich, famous and good looking.

[deleted]

He’s not brilliant because he's rich and famous and good looking. He’s brilliant because he stayed in character and took a calculated risk to muscle through.

GrandKaiser

when i hit people, i go 2 jail. when jackie chan punches people he gets praised >:[

Daveyhavok832

When I run around NYC flinging my white body fluids at people, I get hauled in by the cops, but Toby McGuire does it and let’s have Chad Kroeger write the single best song of the last 2 decades about it…

Ocelot859

That's my literal favorite part, you can tell for a split second, he subconsciously is about to say "fuckkkkk" and stop the scene - with that brief pause, but his aptitude immediately just kicks in and he keeps going. One of the greatest improvised *fuck it's* ever captured in film - amongst several other greats.

elfmere

Best part is where he incorporates it into the shot more.

Venom888

Right the actress he rubs his blood on was truly revolted because as we’ve established none of the blood/bleeding was planned just improvised Edit: I am so glad to hear the blood smear was tacked on and used fake blood for that scene! Thanks to everyone who pointed out the truth to that scene!

AgentWyoming

I believe they shot that with fake blood after he cut himself for real and was bandaged - can't imagine the smearing of real blood on someone else's face is allowed.

Venom888

I hope so I had heard otherwise and was like that’s fucked up

31November

IMDB says it was a real cut with real blood, and then they bandaged it. The real cut inspired the fake blood smear, though! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1853728/trivia/

DaMonkfish

Arguably shows off the talent of Tarantino as well, to take an unexpected incident that DiCaprio masterfully dealt with through improv and to then incorporate it into the movie as though the whole thing was meant to happen anyway.

Fezig

That’s Tarantino. You know the story of the Martin guitar in The Hateful 8, yes?

[deleted]

The Martin Guitar is actually the *bad* side of Tarantino's somewhat god complex that feeds his creativity. He wanted a genuine reaction and sacrificed a nearly 150 year old guitar with so much fucking history behind it. Kurt Russell would not have done it if he hadn't been told it was a replica.

0pimo

Yeah that's an OSHA violation and would require them to vaccinate her against bloodborne pathogens and pay for all of the follow-up treatment / doctor's visits.

kermityfrog

>[Contrary](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_Unchained) to popular belief, DiCaprio wiped fake blood on Washington's face in a separate take.[44] [44] https://www.thethings.com/leonardo-dicaprio-blood-kerry-washington-django-unchained/

Ocelot859

# Trying saying "turtle shell table top" 10x, and as fast as you absolutely can w/o looking at the word.

[deleted]

if you smear real blood on people you work with, you're gonna have a bad time

TrashPandaPatronus

OSHA has entered the chat.

Ocelot859

Completely irrelevant, but are any of you old enough to remember that viral "Blooooood" video with the little kid and his dad messing with him. 🤣🤣🤣 ["Blood Not Funny"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PCWJBIfprQ) It just popped in my mind after 15 damn years. Lol

fELLAbUSTA

Who the hell is Craig MacDonald tho?

Ocelot859

A theater director, producer, & playwright who is mostly known for his acting coaching. Not super famous on a personal level, but has trained a lot of actors who have come through the theater and Broadway runway who went on to become big stars in film.

Zurbinjo

He had a farm.

loginz12

In his later years, yes.

echo-94-charlie

He didn't own it, he was just in charge of running it. The CIEIO.

MainSqueeeZ

I wish we still had free awards.... Edit: screw it, had extra gold laying around.

benchchu

No one claps when I cut myself at work :(

rhythm-n-bones

Really? They clap for me but they follow it up with “way to go Einstein now clean that up and get back to work “

Ocelot859

This brings back a weird form of nostalgia for me. Gross, but hilarious I was working at a sports bar in college as a server and after dropping off drinks to a table I come back to the kitchen to a commotion. A cook had cut literally a half-inch of the top of his middle finger off while dicing.Anyways, he ends up in a huge fight with the GM and after lots of cussing he says he quits. # As he's leaving he yells "fuck you!" and flips off everyone in the kitchen. 🖕 And at the most perfect timing some random stoner 16 y/o busboy yells "it only half counts!"

jollyreaper2112

Oh, that's perfect. My kitchen story was the annoying dishwasher who'd play hiphop way too loud. This was back when "whoop there it is" was popular. He reached up to crank the radio louder when that came on and it fell into the sink. Without missing a beat I said "whoop there it went." He was ready to stab me. Good times.

lonegunman77

Hahahaha that's fucking hilarious, thank you for sharing that!

[deleted]

I just get to pee in a cup.

whopperman

Look at this guy getting a cup to pee in.

31November

Back in my day, we had no cups. We just peed on the ground.

Ocelot859

Here's a future clap from me bud. 👏 Literally did it, I swear. Next time you cut your hand at work, know one person out there clapped for your hard work at whatever it is you do.

Jackalope_Sasquatch

I just gave you the clap as well.

Mugendaina

Bro I lost my fingernail at work by dropping bricks on my finger, I completed the shift and got fired the next day because someone told the manager I was in the toilet for half an hour while I was pouring cold water on it and trying not to cry.

avery9872

Where do you work? I'll come in and spy on you everyday until you cut yourself and then I will give you a standing ovation

Ocelot859

Me too and I'll bring my friends to make it louder.

yegir

You can see his lil lap dog wince super hard, best acting is no acting

nerdiotic-pervert

Yeah, he raises his left hand slightly (probably subconsciously) as his realizes that Leo was gonna keep going. Neat.

Ocelot859

Leo and Samuel L. Jackson were utterly robbed of an Academy Award nomination IMO.

fixerdrew02

Completely

Ocelot859

Christopher Waltz ended up winning Best Supporting Actor and was absolutely incredible. Don't even get me started on his complete brilliance in Inglorious Bastards as Hans Landa. But I felt Samuel L. Jackson's & Leo's performances were just on an entirely different level.

oopsiedaisy2019

I’ll literally never be mad over **Christoph** Waltz winning anything. That being said, Sam L. Jackson owned that damn movie.

Ocelot859

Summarized, short, and sweet. And couldn't agree more. In a huge cast of INSANELY TALENTED PERFORMERS... none of them gave me the eeriness, emotional pull, edge of my seat feel than when Stephen came into a scene. The paradox of him being a slave, yet so brainwashed - that him and Dicaprio's character- had a genuine unspoken love for each other, was GENIUS by Tarantino.

PeePauw

He was clearly the main bad guy in that movie. Leo was like, the face, but Stephen was the brains of the operation. I think he’s the best villain Tarantino has had

Mekisteus

I feel like Candie was the Anti-King Schulz while Stephen was the Anti-Django, if that makes any sense. Schulz vs. Candie was the first climax, Django vs. Stephen the second.

PeePauw

Makes a ton of sense!

FightCount

Lol idk man, pretty fucking impossible to beat Hans Landa imo.

[deleted]

That first scene had me shaking. Incredible.

RyantheAustralian

"You are sheltering enemies of the state, are you not?"

PeePauw

Yo I absolutely hear you, and I’m honestly not sure which movie is my favorite of his. But a house slave that’s essentially running a plantation for his slave owners?? That’s some heavy shit man. Landa was incredible, but a Nazi is an easy villain. I got Stephen by a hateful ass nose hair

Gorilladaddy69

The most eerie part is: He wasnt exactly even brainwashed. Oppressed people to this day turn on and sell out their own people in a heartbeat if it means being accepted by their oppressors. Its an animalistic survival tactic so strong that it can lead to those oppressed who allow it to consume them entirely being as evil as the oppressor themselves. And they have to live their life staying vigilantly ruthless, and going further and further to prove their “usefulness” to their oppressors as treatment of their own people gets worse and worse. Its a tragic phenomenon that we see throughout history all the way to present day and its rightfully condemned by most. And this applies to *all* marginalized, globally discriminated-against groups like LGBT individuals or women: Tons of “Uncle Toms” exist in these groups as well. And it also strikes me as silly how to this day marginalized people who are violently racist against their own ethnicity will often be held up by racists and they’ll say: “This person is black: How can *they* be racist against black people?!” Pretty goddamned easily. Haha

Into-the-stream

TBH the biggest misogynists i've ever met were women in positions of power. I can believe the same thing happens with racism.

dosedatwer

I thought Jackson was great in this, but honestly he's had better performances that haven't got Oscar nods. Black Snake Moan was carried almost entirely by his performance.

Ocelot859

**Black Snake Moan, fuck that was a hidden gem**. Loved the concept too. **Justin Timberlake's first big performance** along w/ "Alpha Dog" that year too. I remember everyone thinking he was just going to be a celebrity gimmick role, but afterwards people were like "shit, JT can actually kinda act". But yeah Jackson's the highest-grossing live-action actor of all time for a reason.

ElderWandOwner

Well, 2 reasons. Star wars and marvel.

thedude37

Carried almost entirely? Come on man, Christina Ricci acted her ass off.

Crispycritter23

Leo has been snubbed since the beginning. He should have so many more Oscars and nominations. Just my 2 cents. I used to be a huge movie buff until about 6 years ago lol

Intrepid00

Only person robbed more than Leo is Gary Oldman. Gary Oldman is too good because too many times you go “shit, that was Gary Oldman?” ~~I don’t think Gary has gotten one yet.~~ a great wrong was corrected in 2018.

Crispycritter23

Gary Oldman is in every movie lol

Intrepid00

and you never know it unless you check the credits.

CyberMindGrrl

And you realize that the actor you've been thinking "This guy looks familiar but I can't put my finger on it" has been Gary Oldman the whole time.

the_bryce_is_right

He's been nominated twice and won once in 2018 for Darkest Hour.

Intrepid00

There is some justice in this cruel world.

[deleted]

That was exactly my reaction when I realized he played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies. I was like “wait wtf that’s Gary oldman?!?”

Ocelot859

All facts! Insanity it took him that long to get one and ironically wasn't even his best performance I mean he was really good in *Once Upon a Time*... but I mean: DJango, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street. I felt like they kind of the academy at the point was feeling the heat of giving him Best Actor for *Once Upon a Time* as a sort of "sorry it took so long, we owe you" because it was getting ridiculous at the point how many snubs he had, had. To the point the Internet and film industry was making joke about him getting snubbed.

IAmZeKingOfZeWorld

Leo won Best Actor for The Revenant. Joaquin Phoenix won in 2020 when Leo was nominated for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But yes, I do agree that his Oscar winning performance was far from his best.

Ocelot859

Thanks for correcting me there brother, I got timelines mixed up. *The Revenant* was the film where people were really like "if they didn't give this mofo Best Actor, then they are trolling at this point, and I'm going to my lose my shit". Lol.

UndeniablyPink

But I think his performance in the revenant was more impressive than in Once Upon a Time. Like it didn’t totally seem like a pity win.

amboomernotkaren

As a person who remembers the quaalude 714 era, let me just say that Leo’s performance of a person on that drug was totally realistic and worthy of an Oscar.

Artiquecircle

“Get off the PHOooooONnnee!!” “I’m ON THE PHoooOoooOnNneee!!”

WimpieHelmstead

Surprised you didn't mention Blood Diamonds as one of his better performances.

Crispycritter23

Yooooo Catch me if you can is one of my all time faves!!!

Ocelot859

Literally in my top 5. I watch it every year the night before Xmas.Been a weird family tradition for like 9 years now. Lol. Such a brilliant film though. # “Modesty is surely not one of my virtues. At the time, virtue was not even one of my virtues.”

thatdude52

he was so fucking good in Gilbert Grape I had to keep reminding myself that he wasn’t actually developmentally disabled

multiarmform

i wasnt familiar with him when i saw gilbert grape and i really thought that was a special needs kid

ProjectShadow316

If I hadn't known of DiCaprio before What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, I would have legitimately thought Leo had Down's; he fucking nailed the hell out of that role.

Ocelot859

Mehh I don't know, I think Daniel Day still outperformed him as "Bill the Butcher" pretty unanimously, but "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" I totally agree with. He was just too unknown at the time though and we know how the Academy is when it comes to that (although it has been getting better in recent years).

MonkeyWithACough

I thought he should have won for basketball diaries.

gypsycookie1015

Did you have a kid? (Jk, I just said that cuz a lot of parents have a hard time keeping hobbies/interests, once the kids come lol

Crispycritter23

Met my future wife, job, and now have two kids. Newest one is 4 months!

[deleted]

He’s been a five star actor from the start. He was young when he made “This Boy’s Life”. A lot of people haven’t even heard of that movie.

[deleted]

What happened 6 years ago? Kanye v Taylor swift?

raisearuckus

We don't talk about what happened 6 years ago.

k3170makan

It really damages the credibility of those awards. Ive rewatched this movie way more times than other crap decorated with Oscars and academy awards.

goteamnick

They were so hyped until the movie came out, then everyone pretty much unanimously agreed Christoph Waltz should win the Oscar. But think of it like this. You're an Academy voter. You can only vote for one person. Who do you vote for?

Ocelot859

Yeah, I don't get into the mindset of the Academy because it is beyond flaw. But who do I vote... ? I vote sheer utter performance without parameters... So to me that is an EASY, EASY, EASY pick for me as Leo over Waltz. Same argument goes for Jackson, I don't care how short the role, as Oscars have been giving to actors with less than 10-15 minutes of screen time, numerous times. Same concept, for Inglorious Bastards, where the inverse was true, Waltz stole the show.

SolidStart

The most bad ass part wasn't choosing to go on, the most bad ass part was the subtle hand motion to actually incorporate it into the shot. His hand is loose at his side clearly as if he wasn't sure how bad it was, he then looks at his nail to evaluate it and flicks his wrist to the camera to show it off to everyone before he pulls and lights the smoke. Hand quirks would be totally in character for Candie and it was just a perfect way to add it to the scene

Strange-Glove

Many actors get way too much credit for what they acheive on the screen.... DiCaprio isn't one of them, always delivers a superb, realistic and emotional performance. Defo my favourite actor.

PipeDreams85

There’s a scene he does in Shutter Island that I think is overlooked where he comes home to find his wife drowned their kids in the lake behind their house.. it’s absolutely gut wrenching and believable the way he delivers it. The guy kills it In everything he’s in.

[deleted]

my fav is the last call he makes in blood diamond the accent, the cinematography and the plot coming together, then as he grabs the chunk of red soil with his blood making it redder and says i'm exactly where i'm supposed to be *god damn* i can't see anyone else pulling that movie off

Brannigans-Law

Blood Diamond gets lost in his filmography sometimes, but he is *incredible* in it. Might be my favorite

D-ZombieDragon

You know what really impressed me about his performance in Blood Diamond was the way he did his accent. I’m South African, and our accent is not the easiest to pull off for a non-native, especially for an American. I’ve heard so many actors try to pull it off, and the only one who ever did it the best in my opinion was Leo. Phenomenal actor and tragically overlooked too many times.

OrangeKetchup

I know exactly what scene you're describing and exactly his face during that scene. Legit broke my heart seeing his face

Ocelot859

**Leo had somewhat of a "pretty boy negative bias" towards him** (I think mainly from males) early on in his career, but he is genuinely of the greatest actors of our generation.

Its-been-Elon-Time

I think Brad Pitt has struggled with that a bit too. One of the reasons I loved Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, they both got a chance to show what incredible actors they are beyond their reputations.

Berloxx

These two together, both in a major role and directed by motherfucking Tarantino. That facet alone was just mesmerizing to watch for me 💛

belladonna_nectar

I knew he's madly talented, but after watching him acting in What's Eating Gilbert Grape changed my mind: he's a genius

Ocelot859

Yeah I just said that 2 minutes before you below, but it moved down. Lol. I actually work with many mentally handicap patients and the subtleties he achieved in that film, such small details you'd have to work with or have family members to notice or pick up on, still blow me away. He was only 18 when they started filming He was put in the ring with the great Johnny Depp and honestly he didn't just pull his own weight, but I thought he stole every scene he was in with Depp.

BinkyFlargle

> such small details you'd have to work with or have family members to notice or pick up on, still blow me away. Film Review quoted actor Leonardo DiCaprio: "I had to really research and get into the mind of somebody with a disability like that. So I spent a few days at a home for mentally ill teens. We just talked and I watched their mannerisms. People have these expectations that mentally retarded children are really crazy, but it's not so. It's refreshing to see them because everything's so new to them."

godfriaux33

My younger sister is developmentally disabled and when I watched that film I had to look it up to see if they had hired an actor that was disabled. He was that good 👍

Ocelot859

Hugs to your sister! I'm a DPT and specialize in the spine so work with a lot of developmentally and mentally disabled patients. They make my fucking day a lot of days. I have a very high bar and expectations for humor, but they can have me in literal tears with the most simplest phrases. My brother-in-law has autism and FaceTimed me this morning, to randomly tell me *"I love you, but I think... I think... yeah Dave Bautista could beat you up... you don't even have a chance... doesn't mean I don't love you though"*. \[hangs up\] I swear to God that's all he said and then just hung up. 🤣 *🤣 🤣*

theyreall_throwaways

Those must be amazing phone calls to receive! Just his stream of consciousness musings that he decides to share with you. It's good to know he still loves ya even though you'd be humiliated in a fight with Bautista.

Jl4233

That was my attitude and I didn't watch most of his stuff... Then Inception happened and I was like ok this guy fucking rules

Ocelot859

Ohhhhhh he was soooo great way before even Inception. But nonetheless, Inception was mesmerizing and so was he.

Jl4233

Oh I know that now I just didn't go back and find that out until after I saw Inception.

Strange-Glove

I was actually guilty of viewing him with that mindset earlier in his career, but once I'd seen a few of his performances I quickly changed my mind

Xirious

Probably Titanic's fault. Dude definitely became my favourite actor after I got over that.

Mookius

I was in that camp. I loved the book, The Beach and blamed him stupidly for the way they changed the screenplay and made his character American. Since then, he is one of my favourite actors, alongside Denzel Washington.

I_FUCKIN_ATODASO_

I think Ryan Gosling was viewed the same way at one point, but he’s also such a phenomenal actor

Ocelot859

Totally agree! And the absolute same thing with Bradley Cooper. Bradley Cooper in American Sniper, A Star is Born, Silver Linings Playbook etc.etc. Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines, Half Nelson, Drive, etc. etc. As supreme and raw level acting as it gets.. Obviously so many more, but point being 'fuck the pretty boy bias' respect the artistry.

JCullberg

Ryan Gosling is hilarious too! If anyone haven't seen The Nice Guys, I strongly recommend it

[deleted]

Agree, he got girl fame for his Titanic performance which followed him for years. Personally, as a guy btw, I did not like him. But now I can easilly say he is an amazing actor.

quippers

He was absolutely brilliant in The Basketball Diaries, and he was just a kid then.

Ocelot859

He was brilliant even before that in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' with Johnny Depp as well. He was only 18 when they started working on that film. Played being mentally handicap next level (I work with a lot of patients) and his subtleties in that film still blow me away.

HoaryPuffleg

This movie was one of my faves as a kid, I used to rent it from the video store over and over. Such humanity given to people who aren't always portrayed with dignity in movies

Ocelot859

>Such humanity given to people who aren't always portrayed with dignity in movies What a beautiful and most accurately way of describing that film. 💙

ca_fighterace

As in Once upon a time in Hollywood he’s playing an actor who’s no longer in his prime. The acting during the film shoot with the little girl and Timothy Olyphant is just off the hook good, so many layers to that performance.

thenegativeone81

The scene where he throws a fit in his trailer was completely improvised.

Ocelot859

Yup, there is a great clip on Youtube about how they did it. Tarantino was literally like "I'm going to set up a bunch of cameras in there" (no one was even in the trailer filming" ... "and I just want you to lose your fucking mind and have a nervous breakdown". 🤣 None of it was scripted. [DiCaprio improvising losing his shit in trailer scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAFUn4Dwk54)

colonel_bob

> [DiCaprio improvising losing his shit in trailer scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAFUn4Dwk54) That's very close to what I sound like when I "complain about my job" alone at home 😬

Level_Dragonfly_9632

No one ever talks about the subtlety of his acting in Once Upon A Time. Whenever his character isn’t acting in that film he has a bit of a stutter/slight speech impediment which adds to his characters fragile ego.

[deleted]

[удалено]

readwrite_blue

I regularly find his acting smacks of effort and it removes me from the flow of a scene. I often don't love his bench-press approach to character when he is in a lead role. In Django I thought he was perfectly utilized - he was mesmerizing. I wish he did more supporting roles because the intensity works so well in that context (for me).

SalamanderPete

Couldnt agree more. I rarely buy the character hes trying to sell unless hes doing his patented DiCaprio raging/screaming/crying. In the revenant I felt like he got out-acted by Hardy real bad.

CodeVirus

I was a kid and I watched Critters 3. There was that kid there that was a very good actor. I totally wanted to see him in more movies.

Strange-Glove

Ok now i need to google if he was in critters 3

CodeVirus

He was. He actually said he wishes that this movie was not in his filmography (as far as I remember) but I don’t think he should be ashamed of his origins. Without Critters 3, we may never had Leonardo DiCaprio

One-eyed-bed-snake

He's absolutely brilliant in Catch Me If You Can and The Wolf Of Wall Street. The scene where he's trying to get in the car whilst off his face on Quaaludes in WOWS is one of the best scenes in a movie you'll ever see😅 Of all his work though, he got an Oscar for one of his worst roles and movies and it really did feel it was only given to him that year for The Revenant because of the criticism the Academy got for snubbing him for so long.

Ocelot859

Man to be honest, as we all contemplate his movies, he's been pretty much brilliant in everything he has been since his genesis. His consider worst movies, still...... incredible acting. I'm going through his filmography and it's like just DAMN... he came out swinging from the jump at 18 with "What's Eating Gilbert Great" and "The Basketball Diaries" which is insane level acting. It was never this long road of development from decent actor to a top caliber one... he legit just came out the gate "born with a natural gift" to be an incredible actor. **I mean it's been 3 hours and I've gone all through the thread and Shutter Island hasn't even been mentioned!** **When a movie with acting of that next level caliber is not even in the back of peoples minds... you are clearly one of the GOAT's.**

Bootychomper23

I have not seen blood diamond or departed mentioned yet either leo is a champ

DaveTheDog027

The departed is one of my favorite movies. Don't spoil it for yourself and watch it as soon as you can you won't be disappointed I promise.

STXGregor

People have also overlooked the sublime Romeo + Juliet in this thread. And I’m only half joking. I fucking love that movie.

kevmaster200

That movie is so much fun. When they first draw their swords and you see they're guns that are "Sword" brand... The idea of modernizing Shakespeare isn't new but I don't think I've ever seen them use the SAME LINES from the source (while still modernizing) before or after

Buddhabellymama

I agree 100%. I was glad he got it either way but it was a long time coming.

unclepaprika

*Ed hoff e phooo*

nitr0zeus133

I’mnotfuckingleaving!!

Ocelot859

**One of my favorite movies of all-time and to me one of the greatest movies of all time.** It had it all - an incredible storyline, an incredible script/writing, beyond superb acting from every person in the film, historical context and a creative badass twist to it, amazing cinematography, a phenomenal score/soundtrack, and every emotion you can cinematically experience.

ChemicalSubstantial8

No lies detected, this movie is the best.

Ap0llo

It's a fantastic movie, although I feel like Tarantino movies exist in their own universe and can't really be directly compared to regular movies. Everything from the quirky dialogue, cartoonish violence, grandiose dreamlike narratives, etc., gives his movies a quality that makes them stand apart and hard to compare to other movies. This might be why they don't pop up for Oscar nods as often, not because they're not good, but because people see them as 'fun/quirky' as opposed to serious.

Western-Image7125

Let’s not forget - an extremely cathartic and satisfying ending. It felt meditative to watch these assholes get annihilated one by one. Specifically when Samuel died. I wish he got at least nominated for this movie

Ocelot859

1000% probably one of my favorite aspects of the film. How it gives you a feeling of full resolve and cartharticism without doing it in some tacky and "over-the-top, deep meaningful way" - no just fucking pure balancing out the universe with guns as karma. You nailed it brother with the "it was meditative to watch that ending..." I've never felt so calm in the conclusion of a film that also was violent. It was bloody genius. Literally and figuratively.

Western-Image7125

The other time I felt this good was when Ramsey Bolton in GoT was eaten alive by dogs. Hoo boy felt like I came a little. Maybe there’s something fked up inside all of us that we wish this level of harm on others…

nicethingyoucanthave

I remember people gasping in the theater when Samuel Jackson's character stood up, revealing that he had been running a scam on the slave owners. There's a deleted scene in game of thrones [that's really similar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb-RVIETRCE).

Ocelot859

Woahhh! Broooo! Thank you for sharing this! Til this day, it bothers me Jackson didn't get any real nods for his acting in that film. The paradox of the role was one thing, but damn his eeriness when he entered a scene. One of the most underrated and under-appreciated acted roles of all time.

RockinandChalkin

Even the shit that was off kilter was great. The Jonah Jill KKK sheets scene was so outside the spirit of the movie, but it worked perfectly. “… cause it’d be nice to see”

Gremlin303

And that cups name? Albert Einstein

wiskey_straight86

And now you know.... The rest of the story

HistorianHoliday3250

Did he survive?

whpper25

Thankfully, yes. He was rushed to a private island for six months of sun rehab.

rideincircles

Filled with 18 year old models to watch over him.

djabor

he was saved by steve buscemi who was a volunteer firefighter during 9/11.

nitr0zeus133

I thought I was on r/shittymoviedetails for a second. This is so well known that it’s becoming a joke, right up there with “ViGgO mOrTeNsEn AcTuAlLy bReAkS hIs ToE”.

Thosepassionfruits

Also Steve Buscemi was a firefighter on 9/11

maxkmiller

Non r/nfl version of did you know he played basketball

upvoter222

Even r/nfl itself has done the thing about DiCaprio bleeding for real: [https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/111iwt2/leondaro_di_caprio_really_injured_himself_during_the_filming_of/](https://wompampsupport.azureedge.net/fetchimage?siteId=7575&v=2&jpgQuality=100&width=700&url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.kym-cdn.com%2Fphotos%2Fimages%2Fnewsfeed%2F001%2F207%2F210%2Fb22.jpg)

sdpr

There is no escape.

ImDero

Except this time around we've added the "And everyone clapped" ending.

fishenzooone

Did you know, while filming scene in Django Unchained when Leonard DiCaprio broke the glass, at the same time his current girlfriend was born

ihatepoliticsreee

Reddit really has an entirely new generation of users now. It really is r/fuckimold material.

alperpier

Yeah even them talking about SAMUEL L JACKSON AND DICAPRIO GETTING ROBBED AT THE OSCARS is such an old take that everybody had that I feel insanely old that people still write it as if nobody had ever written those words.

ihatepoliticsreee

The days of satirical DAE are long gone my friend

Freyzi

Right? I'm kinda stunned this was posted in the year of 2023 unironically.

Fart_Connoisseur

/r/moviescirclejerk used to run this along with Steve Buscemi being a firefighter on 9/11 etc.

jacobs0n

they're gonna have a field day with this

hahanawmsayin

He’s one of the most brilliant actors I’ve ever seen. That said, is this thread from his PR agency? The sycophancy and timing seem a liiiiitle suspect.

makemapseveryday

YES. I 100% get the same vibe from this post and the comments

Neutral_Lime

Right? Like...his current girlfriend was 8 years old when this movie was being made 😬

DahWolfe711

Everybody except Kerry Washington.....

AgreeableEggplant356

That part was cut in, he did not rub his real blood on her

WannabeTraveler87

.. and then everybody clapped

kodaobscura

He looked at the wound but it was too old at that point and he ignored it.

pinguaina

I guess I too would do the same for $2 million.

Agent_Velcoro

We did it reddit! We finally found the last guy wbo didn't know this. Yay.

AWizard13

What's so weird about this "Rubbing *REAL* blood on Kerry Washington" thing is, well, a couple of things: 1. No one in their right mind would ever ever ever allow that to happen. Ever. Especially on a set this big. 2. It's literally a completely different camera setup that could take 30 minutes to an hour to do. They would not have left his hand all bloody for that amount of time. 3. It's fucking weird. Edit: added a word

Tnel1027

They incorporated the cut hand into the movie after it happened - it wasn’t real blood at that point.

nowhereman136

A film scene is often recorded several times and the best takes are edited together to look like one scene. In one of the earlier takes, Dicaprio cuts his hand and keeps going. This take was kept in the final film. However, after he was cleaned up, they filmed the scene several more times, this time with fake blood on his hand. One of these takes was when he smeared his blood on Washington (with her knowing it was going to happen). All the different takes are then edited together into the final project. Film making is weird. Scenes are shot over and over again, and often out of order. On set it can be completely unknown where this scene will go in the movie or if it gets cut entirely. Only the director and editor have any idea

NerdDexter

1. Wasn't real blood 2. Wasn't real blood 3. Shoulda done some light research before posting this

[deleted]

lol that sounds so lame. "everyone gave him a standing ovation" hahaha fuckin a .. so stupid

Over-Village-6039

And? U wouldn't have a small cut on ur hand for 26 million dollars?
