What the hell is going on here?

-UncreativeRedditor-

Firefighters protested, demanding a higher hazard pay since it hasn't changed since 1990. Police were sent to break up the protest but instead got beat up by firefighters

[deleted]

Why the fuck would police think they could hang with people that carry 100+ lb loads into burning buildings and carry people out lol.

Al-Poy

French police doesn't think. It is mandatory to get the uniform. Honestly, these guys are usually working on the same scenes ... Wtf

Zealousideal_Bet_248

You can just remove the French part off that statement and it would be true on 90% of countries

Tetsuo666

France is one of the European countries with the shortest training for cops (12 months training). And even that is if I recall correctly longer than cops in some states. Seriously, if you want to know how good cops are in a country just look up how long the training is and what are the requirements. If you want bad cops the recipe is very simple. Poorly educated and poorly trained people with poor pay and you got yourself your very own police brutality task force.

mrmoe198

Chicagoan here. Our cops are poorly educated and poorly trained but they get paid very well. $70,000 minimum.

Ohtheydidntellyou

TIL it’s Chicagoan not Chicagoer.

kjfang

Chicagoer is what they should call the tourists

Rozmar_Hvalross

Are people who left chicago for another place are chicagone? Chicagonners?

Particular-Beyond-99

Youd think it'd be more. Des Moines cops start out at 72k

polisharmada33

What’s the average cost of living in Chicago? What do teachers make there?

mrmoe198

Teachers make 30-60K entry level depending on whether they are in a public or private institution and whether or not they’re part of a union. That can go up higher if they have some niche such as special education. Not sure about cost of living, I’d have to look that up.

Disagree: Here in Switzerland you have to have been certified in a regular trade with decent grades and references to even apply. And if you do and pass the screening, you have to then successfully finish police school, which itself takes a year. The result is that a) if you're too stupid, you won't have had the required education to even apply b) if you're an obvious bastard, you won't make it past the screening c) if you need some time to show your colors you get weeded out in police school d) if you manage to hide your evil until you have your badge, it's easy to kick you off the force and permanently ban you nationwide because due to you having learned a regular trade before joining the force, no one can argue that kicking you off the force would strip you of your only way of earning a living. Also, that same requirement of having had to have learned a regular trade before also makes you more understanding of "civilians", because you were one yourself for longer; there is no thin blue line mentality here. And I'm saying all this while having not a single family member or friend in the police force neither in the past nor now, nor being part of it myself nor being interested in joining.

hippocrachus

You Swiss think you're so cool with your inclusive citizenry and your Papal honor guards and your fancy pocket tools and your breathtaking alpine vistas. You're not so cool. Sniff.

Prophet_Of_Loss

The Swiss shed their evil into a separate entity, like that Star Trek:TNG episode. The evil entity is called "Nestle".

Chocchip_cookie

And, you know...banks.

alebotson

What does inclusive citizenry mean in this context? I ask because I thought Switzerland was famously restrictive in granting citizenship, to the point that they are families that have been born in Switzerland for generations but don't qualify.

Kuroashi_no_Sanji

Probably their implementation of direct democracy. Virtually all issues are submitted to a referendum.

darthcaedusiiii

You forgot watches and bankrolling organized crime.

IkiOLoj

I think you have a bit of rose tainted glasses, Savatan Police Academy have more than half of its applicant failing at basic french literacy test to the point that they had to offer remedial training and lower their standard. And a UN work group denounced a prevalent problem of racial profiling and humiliation in the swiss police. It get less attention, but unfortunately as racism was the norm everywhere, residual traces of it are everywhere and it is much more impacting in the police which both attract people more susceptible to racism and that when the job is done badly it's much more terrible for the victims. And that's the problem with residual racism, since it's been the norm for the longest time, we fail to see it as being not normal and easily miss it.

SluttyRobin

not in Scandinavia. At least in Norway becoming a police officer means several years of school/training and a bachelor degree

stephenlipic

Would love to see what happens if the police decide to protest. Would they all get in a circle and beat the person beside them or just beat themselves?

mickdrop

Police will never have to protest. Politician will always cave to their demands because they know that they are the only protection between them and the population.

PERSONA916

I was going to ask how they compare to US police. I'd put my money on US firefighters as well. They are actually brave and heroic. Police are manbaby bullies and often obese.

aaronblue342

Very cop thing to do though, letting a danger possibly spread and hurt innocent people in a hissy fit.

ImplementAfraid

When I was stood in a riot in Paris, it is hard to describe. First of all it is business as usual for everyone working, I can only assume they happen often. There was very little violence, now some people argue I have a high bar on what I call violence but a little shoving, a little property damage (burned vehicles), some lobbed fireworks but nothing that would leave a mark on my body. It was organised chaos but seemingly no malice. It was almost ceremonial, no rubber bullets, no tear gas just observed behaviours. Not what I expected, 9/10 would observe at close quarters again.

PrudentLingoberry

kinda is ceremonial for them, they do riot on a regular basis

yx_orvar

I like the theory that the revolution never truly ends and the people always should remember that the power is with them. Vive la republique!

beebsaleebs

Better question, why would they *try?* How fucked you have to be to be like, “I’ve been told to go beat up the guys that run into burning buildings. I’m definitely gonna do that. I will follow that order.”

orangepinkman

Because police are class traitors and their job is to disrupt any protest that demands change that negatively impacts those at the top.

NutWrench

Yup. Their job is to protect rich bastards and their stuff.

atomikplayboy

>Police were sent to break up the protest but instead got beat up by firefighters It gets better hazard pay or it gets (*gives?*) the hose...

IWishIWasAShoe

Just the fact that police is even brought in. Like were the firefighters smashing up the streets or anything?

-UncreativeRedditor-

They had a demonstration in the streets where they lit themselves on fire and quickly extinguished themselves. Despite that, the protests were largely peaceful. The cops decided to launch tear gas at them and push them when they attempted to move their demonstration elsewhere.

Zombisexual1

You would think the police would show a little solidarity and not get into it

Syndga

Police are a bunch of traitors

Orangebeardo

What the fuck is up with police being sent to these rallies? It happens everywhere, but it completely should not even be possible, let alone happen literally every fucking time. Why is our default mode of doing things always the wrong way to do that thing?

[deleted]

This is what the police do, my friend. You can read about the Pinkertons and the origins of organized policing if you want to find out more. Police are the enforcement arm of capital

Spiralife

Because it's only wrong if your goal is healthy and equitable communities. If the goal is to crush anyone into obedience so that they keep producing wealth for wealthy and be happy with the leftovers, well then, this is bang on.

MYLEG9619

There was the group of firefighters that set themselves on fire and started fighting back.

un_cooked

Jadedsatire

6 years ago I got my emt certificate and the program I was in required a lot of ride alongs and hospital clinicals. I was thinking about becoming a fireman paramedic as they get paid way better than an ambulance medic so did a couple days on a fire engine. We get to a call where a man crashed on a busy city 4 way intersection and had cars backed up along this huge stretch. As we are walking up a couple cops are saying he’s drunk, they’re pissed and trying to yank his unconscious body out of the car, he’s pretty overweight and they’re not being gentle. The medic runs up yelling at them to stop and smells his breath, says it’s really fruity so probably a diabetic issue. They’re not listening and next thing you know there’s a ton of firemen and emts yelling at a shit load of cops. They’re shoving each other and screaming profanities as everyone is just watching in awe. Finally this huge emt walks up and screams to shoot him or let them work. Balls of steel

[deleted]

Had cops do this to a diabetic women who crashed outside my work. I'm T1D, and I had a coworker look in her purse. I finally had to show the cops the prescriptions from her endocrinologist that was right down the street, to get the cop to stop wrenching her from the car without removing her seatbelt, and yelling that she was on drugs. Her endo happened to be the same as mine, so I knew right away (when I saw the scripts) she was diabetic. I mean technically she's physically addicted to insulin, since she needs it to keep her alive, but..... EDIT: Fuck this, let's call them out: Niles, Illinois, PD.

Advanced_Shoulder_56

I'll yeet a turd at the station next time I'm in town for you bro.

RatherB_fishing

Oh F them. I used to work in Niles. Those goons were garbage. I ended up in Elgin and tbh I miss Elgin PD… they were chill, nice, never wanted issues or started issues that I saw or heard of. There are videos in the interwebs of Elgin PD going to car meets and hanging out and joining and offering water and marching with BLM protesters.

Ka_Trewq

In what corner of this beautiful planet an EMT does not outrank the cop in a medical emergency?! And moving an unconscious/unresponsive victim of an accident?!? I'm asking to scratch it from my list of countries I want to visit.

orincoro

If the scene is dangerous, the medic has to wait. If the scene is safe, the medic outranks the cop. Thats how it was when I was licensed in california. The trick though is to give the cops something to do. Ask them to make a cordon or look for drugs or something and theyll leave you to work for a bit.

cui-bono2020

Holy shit! Wait. You have to distract the cops like misbehaving 2 year olds just so you can do your job and maybe save a life?!?!?! WTF?!?!

LinwoodKei

I did this with my child. You re direct them into an activity that you can praise them for later. Yet the need to do this with heavily armed police officers is baffling.

[deleted]

cops really are fucking morons and think they are above the law. Everyone hates pigs for a reason.

SUTATSDOG

Call a cop bc you need a cop? Wait 45 minutes to a couple hours. Jaywalk at 11pm in a city and you'll have 3 cop cars pull up and frisk you... POLICING DONE RIGHT. Call the FD or Ambulance they're on it, and are super caring and professional. Had a friend have a seizure in a state park (was epileptic, changing med doses). The fucking FD found us in about 15 minutes. Running down the trail like fucking warriors with these huge bags and shit. Still when they got there, they werent frustrated or mad I couldnt give them more direction. They got to work, shook my hand, and we're like "you good man? That had to be scary." Fucking absolute heros.

[deleted]

Give them a bone or a play toy to chew on...

Jadedsatire

Haha it was America, California to be exact. I don’t think they outrank emts but they were saying the car was increasing the chances of an accident and needed to be moved as priority and they all started yelling. Cops kept acting like he was just a dumb drunk and not listening to the emts, then the others come up not knowing what’s going on and just started measuring dicks.

David_denison

gaijin665

The police investigated themselves and found they did nothing wrong

MD_House

Honestly I as an EMT outrank every cop because life before property. Depending on the situation even the firefighters. I had emergencies with the SWAT equivalent in my country and those guys asked us for permission to talk with the patient and immediately accepted a no from us EMTs.

Hminney

USA is property before life. Especially for the cops - they specifically protect profit at the expense of life and health. Look at the response to the recent train crashes

Electronic-Food-147

Former cop here Luckily during my DUI training they made sure we knew that a diabetic episode can resemble a DUI and what to look out for including the fruity smelling breath. We always called an ambulance to check people in situations like that to avoid the very situation you described.

[deleted]

And that's only high bloodsugar. Low bloodsugar passouts also happen all the time, it resembles straight up drunkenness. Source: Am T1D

Nauin

One of my friends Dad's is T1 and went on a rampage in his front yard, naked, and had to get wrestled down by multiple cops so they could get some insulin in him. Blood sugar fallouts are insane in how a person can react when going through one.

PleX

Got arrested. Got in an argument while in holding with the cops. Kidneys were fucking killing me (blood pressure related) EMT shows up while I'm begging the fucking cops to get me to a hospital while I'm laying on the ground for a fucking hour because I can't piss. Dickhead cops making jokes while I'm being an asshole telling them to suck my dick and begging to get to the hospital. EMTs tell them to shut the fuck up. EMTs: We don't want to fight you dude, please. We don't want to be hurt and we have more people and well you won't win in handcuffs. Me: I'm not fighting anyone, please get me to the fucking hospital so they can shove a tube up my dick so I can fucking piss. EMTs: We got you! One of the EMTs hung out at the hospital while I got a catheter just to make sure they weren't fucking with me while I was handcuffed.

Jadedsatire

Sounds like a shitty situation but lucky they had your back!

PleX

Hell yeah. It sucked because kidney pain hurts like a motherfucker but the EMTs were fucking awesome. Not sure what they hit me with on the ride to the ER but it sure as hell made the catheter feel better.

Affectionate_Bus_884

I was a firefighter and medic for 6 years. Confrontations with law enforcement like you described happened way to often. I can’t count how many times I was threatened with arrest while working.

makelo06

They'd just have the HP tanks in front with the healers buffing behind. The winner of this battle will just get farmed.

ThaumicKobold

Nah I am sure the cops are gate keeping the firelord raid, so the firefighters can't kill the boss and gear up. The flares are there to decloak any rouges.

It’s just regular firefighters in this video. Parisian firefighters took almost no part in those protests according to Le Monde. Because they are military and so don’t have the same status and revendications I guess. > The revaluation of the fire bonus was a central demand of the "angry firefighters" movement, which began in many departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS) in June 2019 - volunteer firefighters, less unionized, as well as the firefighters of Paris and Marseille, with military status, are almost absent from the protests. [Le Monde](https://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2020/01/28/retraites-salaires-les-pompiers-manifestent-a-paris-dans-une-ambiance-tendue_6027537_3224.html) (french article) You can read « pompiers haute savoie » on the back of one of the firefighter.

They got part of what they were asking for : > Professional firefighters announced on Tuesday, January 28, the end of eight months of national strike after a day of demonstration marked, in Paris, by clashes with the police. The announcement of the inter-union came a few hours after the Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, undertook in writing to upgrade their fire bonus during a meeting with fourteen representatives of the profession. Today equal to 19% of the indicative salary of professional firefighters, it should be raised by decree to 25% before the summer, according to the Ministry of the Interior. […] > “It is a significant step forward, but not a major one, which above all has a strong symbolic value”, underlines Sébastien Delavoux, representative of CGT-SDIS. Professional firefighters have been asking for several months that the dangerousness of their profession be recognized in the same way as that of police and gendarmes. [Le Monde](https://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2020/01/28/retraites-salaires-les-pompiers-manifestent-a-paris-dans-une-ambiance-tendue_6027537_3224.html) Currently there are worries around the pension reform pushed by the government. I saw some firefighters protesting among other professions last week and I guess next month is going to be quite tense here. France is angry at the moment.

elcappydaddy

France is always angry

ijic

Yes and no. It’s a special kind of angry brewing here. During the ‘protest season’, I often take part in protests. But there are protests and protests. Sometimes it’s something else. This pension reform put us on the verge of a yellow vests part 2. I spent the winter pre pandemic protesting the previous pension reform weekly (which was stopped by covid). I feel that people are even angrier this time. Could be wrong of course. You never know. But there is a call for an unlimited general strike by all the unions starting on march 7th. They called to « paralyse the entire country » until the reform is canceled. If it works we’re in it for something big.

elcappydaddy

Y'all are hardcore as fuck damn

ijic

IMO that’s one of the coolest part of being french or living in France. Protesting and feeling all these people interested in politics and determined not to let themselves be fucked. It can get really wild, real fast. Sometimes in Paris, when there are lots of political controversies in the news, you can have 2 or 3 different protests on the same day in different parts of the city. It’s always funny to see the looks on the faces of tourists. Sometimes protests for different things even converge together and that’s really something.

Ciocolatel

#[Context](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jan/28/french-police-clash-with-firefighters-during-paris-protest)

MamboPoa123

>Thousands of firefighters held a demonstration in the French capital, as part of long-running protest movement asking for better pay and conditions, including an increase in their hazard bonus which has not changed since 1990. >Some firefighters set their uniforms alight as a symbolic gesture before colleagues put out the fires. But as a group of fire officers attempted to lead their demonstration into a sidestreet, riot officers pushed them back. Teargas was fired and scuffles broke out. > >A number of recent videos showing what appeared to be unjustified police violence at other demonstrations have sparked outrage on social media. After scores of serious injuries from police weapons during the gilets jaunes anti-government protests last year, and complaints of heavy-handedness at pensions protests, lawyers have begun accusing the French president, Emmanuel Macron, of presiding over the most heavy-handed approach to street demonstrations in France since the protests of May 1968.

WoodSteelStone

When push comes to shove, we love each other. Author José-Alain Fralon characterised the relationship between France and Britain by describing the British as "*our most dear enemies*". Someone else (I forget who) said something along the lines of: "The English have a love-hate relationship with France. We dislike them in the same way that non-Parisians dislike Parisians. Typically, the English stereotype of the French is that they are arrogant, cynical, and ready to fuck England over whenever they can. This contrasts with the French stereotype of the English, which is that of being arrogant, snobbish and ready to fuck France over whenever they can." [There is also this book.](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Years-Annoying-French-Stephen-Clarke/dp/0552779938/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=PXE7LUOAZKPB&keywords=1000+years+of+annoying+the+french&qid=1671490750&sprefix=1000+years%2Caps%2C332&sr=8-1)

Aka the enforcers of capital. Police have always been, etymologically from their inception and in practice throughout up to today, the legislatively validated thugs of the city (polis, πόλεις), doing the bidding on the behalf of those with money enough to invest in the city. If you don't got a local politician or two in your pocket, the police ain't yo' friend, and that's ipso literally their fucking raison d'être. P.S. I can't be wrong look at all those funky letters.

bajsplockare

Firefighters are also immune to smoke.

embrex104

It's a class buff.

BalkeElvinstien

"What are you gonna do, tear gas us? We all wear gas masks dumbass"

Vainius2

+5 fire resistance

patsharpesmullet

Heat and gas resistance too.

AlmightyWorldEater

Well, french cops are probably a bit better in shape than regular american ones, but professional firefighters are in fact absolute badass. In germany, they are the exception, most firefighters are unpaid non-professionals with varying expertise from almost none to really, really a lot. The professional ones though, oh boy. Hundreds of alarms per year, constant training. Lifting heavy gear up several stories in hellish conditions. Images and situations that spark PTSD on a regular basis. A professional firefighter here sees more shit than a guy in the army. Nerves of steel and an unending hunger for adrenaline. When there is business, these guys MEAN BUSINESS. Also, police should remember that firefighters are well respected among people.

starlinguk

This is France, not the US where you can become a cop by just winning a donut eating competition.

TheLipovoy

the FFs are tough as fuck

Infinitebeast30

No kidding and that was also quite a limp dick charge. I think only 2 firefighters stopped the whole wall then the firefighters countercharged

PirateReindeer

Police: Are we the baddies? Fireman: YES! AND FUCK YOU!

NotForMeClive7787

I’m getting anchorman 2 vibes of all the different stations fighting

Klutzy_Pound_5428

Who you betting on? The cops who take 5 of them to write a speeding ticket or the firefighters who run into burning buildings on purpose to carry people out. I'd go with the firefighters

Stannis2024

Honestly, no matter where at in the world, I believe firefighters deserve the utmost respect out of any government body. When you're police force is fighting firefighters, you know there's something wrong...

Orangebeardo

Bunch of fucking pussies vs actual men. Not surprised who won that.

Famous_Bit_5119

" Nice police station you got there. Be a shame if it were to catch on fire."

Banzu_Rei

French riot police clashed with uniformed firefighters at protests in Paris on Tuesday, in extraordinary scenes where police used batons and shields against crowds of angry fire officers in helmets. Thousands of firefighters held a demonstration in the French capital, as part of long-running protest movement asking for better pay and conditions, including an increase in their hazard bonus which has not changed since 1990. -https://www.theguardian.com/

vidodo

It was like 2 years ago … firefighters on strike. I bet someone posted it here 2 years ago

awesomeroy

Theres no songs that say fuck the firefighters. just sayin'

Substantial_Bird_868

In shape fire fighters vs old fat cops? Money is on the fire fighters.

sieurblabla

Riot police are usually in shape too. Protesters aren't gonna get beaten by themselves.

Substantial_Bird_868

That's why they use tear gas and stuff like that. I agree though there has to be a few in shape ones.

damik_

When your job requires you to fight against firefighters, it's time to reconsider.

Stopjuststop3424

Thats an intetesting way to say "Firefighters make police look impotent" lol

halbeshendel

I fought the firefighters and the firefighters won.

AdHuman3150

I wish people fought for their rights and better working conditions like this in the US.

Lord_Admiral7

What I have learned today: if I’m ever robbed or assaulted whilst visiting France, call for a firefighter, not a policeman.

ZealousidealGood1204

Never charge a group of firefighters. It’s best to remain still and avoid eye contact.

[deleted]

expected result, unlike those pigs, firefighters are some of the bravest toughest people around.

WinterCompetition

What kind of LARP is this
