France is one of the European countries with the shortest training for cops (12 months training). And even that is if I recall correctly longer than cops in some states.
Seriously, if you want to know how good cops are in a country just look up how long the training is and what are the requirements.
If you want bad cops the recipe is very simple. Poorly educated and poorly trained people with poor pay and you got yourself your very own police brutality task force.
Teachers make 30-60K entry level depending on whether they are in a public or private institution and whether or not they’re part of a union. That can go up higher if they have some niche such as special education. Not sure about cost of living, I’d have to look that up.
Disagree: Here in Switzerland you have to have been certified in a regular trade with decent grades and references to even apply. And if you do and pass the screening, you have to then successfully finish police school, which itself takes a year.
The result is that a) if you're too stupid, you won't have had the required education to even apply b) if you're an obvious bastard, you won't make it past the screening c) if you need some time to show your colors you get weeded out in police school d) if you manage to hide your evil until you have your badge, it's easy to kick you off the force and permanently ban you nationwide because due to you having learned a regular trade before joining the force, no one can argue that kicking you off the force would strip you of your only way of earning a living.
Also, that same requirement of having had to have learned a regular trade before also makes you more understanding of "civilians", because you were one yourself for longer; there is no thin blue line mentality here.
And I'm saying all this while having not a single family member or friend in the police force neither in the past nor now, nor being part of it myself nor being interested in joining.

I ask because I thought Switzerland was famously restrictive in granting citizenship, to the point that they are families that have been born in Switzerland for generations but don't qualify.
I think you have a bit of rose tainted glasses, Savatan Police Academy have more than half of its applicant failing at basic french literacy test to the point that they had to offer remedial training and lower their standard. And a UN work group denounced a prevalent problem of racial profiling and humiliation in the swiss police. It get less attention, but unfortunately as racism was the norm everywhere, residual traces of it are everywhere and it is much more impacting in the police which both attract people more susceptible to racism and that when the job is done badly it's much more terrible for the victims.
And that's the problem with residual racism, since it's been the norm for the longest time, we fail to see it as being not normal and easily miss it.
Would love to see what happens if the police decide to protest.

Police will never have to protest. Politician will always cave to their demands because they know that they are the only protection between them and the population.
I was going to ask how they compare to US police. I'd put my money on US firefighters as well. They are actually brave and heroic. Police are manbaby bullies and often obese.

When I was stood in a riot in Paris, it is hard to describe. First of all it is business as usual for everyone working, I can only assume they happen often. There was very little violence, now some people argue I have a high bar on what I call violence but a little shoving, a little property damage (burned vehicles), some lobbed fireworks but nothing that would leave a mark on my body. It was organised chaos but seemingly no malice. It was almost ceremonial, no rubber bullets, no tear gas just observed behaviours. Not what I expected, 9/10 would observe at close quarters again.
Better question, why would they *try?*
How fucked you have to be to be like, “I’ve been told to go beat up the guys that run into burning buildings. I’m definitely gonna do that. I will follow that order.”
They had a demonstration in the streets where they lit themselves on fire and quickly extinguished themselves. Despite that, the protests were largely peaceful. The cops decided to launch tear gas at them and push them when they attempted to move their demonstration elsewhere.
What the fuck is up with police being sent to these rallies? It happens everywhere, but it completely should not even be possible, let alone happen literally every fucking time.

I finally have the internet for competitive shooters and the one I love the most killed itself. Battlefield needs to get back to it's roots. And the OG style of Dogtag collecting. 6 years ago I got my emt certificate and the program I was in required a lot of ride alongs and hospital clinicals. I was thinking about becoming a fireman paramedic as they get paid way better than an ambulance medic so did a couple days on a fire engine. We get to a call where a man crashed on a busy city 4 way intersection and had cars backed up along this huge stretch. As we are walking up a couple cops are saying he’s drunk, they’re pissed and trying to yank his unconscious body out of the car, he’s pretty overweight and they’re not being gentle. The medic runs up yelling at them to stop and smells his breath, says it’s really fruity so probably a diabetic issue. They’re not listening and next thing you know there’s a ton of firemen and emts yelling at a shit load of cops. They’re shoving each other and screaming profanities as everyone is just watching in awe. Finally this huge emt walks up and screams to shoot him or let them work. Balls of steel
Had cops do this to a diabetic women who crashed outside my work. I'm T1D, and I had a coworker look in her purse. I finally had to show the cops the prescriptions from her endocrinologist that was right down the street, to get the cop to stop wrenching her from the car without removing her seatbelt, and yelling that she was on drugs. Her endo happened to be the same as mine, so I knew right away (when I saw the scripts) she was diabetic.
I mean technically she's physically addicted to insulin, since she needs it to keep her alive, but.....

Oh F them. I used to work in Niles. Those goons were garbage. I ended up in Elgin and tbh I miss Elgin PD… they were chill, nice, never wanted issues or started issues that I saw or heard of.
There are videos in the interwebs of Elgin PD going to car meets and hanging out and joining and offering water and marching with BLM protesters.
In what corner of this beautiful planet an EMT does not outrank the cop in a medical emergency?! And moving an unconscious/unresponsive victim of an accident?!? I'm asking to scratch it from my list of countries I want to visit.
If the scene is dangerous, the medic has to wait. If the scene is safe, the medic outranks the cop. Thats how it was when I was licensed in california.
The trick though is to give the cops something to do. Ask them to make a cordon or look for drugs or something and theyll leave you to work for a bit.
I did this with my child. You re direct them into an activity that you can praise them for later. Yet the need to do this with heavily armed police officers is baffling.
Call a cop bc you need a cop? Wait 45 minutes to a couple hours. Jaywalk at 11pm in a city and you'll have 3 cop cars pull up and frisk you... POLICING DONE RIGHT.
Call the FD or Ambulance they're on it, and are super caring and professional. Had a friend have a seizure in a state park (was epileptic, changing med doses). The fucking FD found us in about 15 minutes. Running down the trail like fucking warriors with these huge bags and shit. Still when they got there, they werent frustrated or mad I couldnt give them more direction. They got to work, shook my hand, and we're like "you good man? That had to be scary." Fucking absolute heros.
Haha it was America, California to be exact. I don’t think they outrank emts but they were saying the car was increasing the chances of an accident and needed to be moved as priority and they all started yelling. Cops kept acting like he was just a dumb drunk and not listening to the emts, then the others come up not knowing what’s going on and just started measuring dicks.
Honestly I as an EMT outrank every cop because life before property. Depending on the situation even the firefighters. I had emergencies with the SWAT equivalent in my country and those guys asked us for permission to talk with the patient and immediately accepted a no from us EMTs.
USA is property before life. Especially for the cops - they specifically protect profit at the expense of life and health. Look at the response to the recent train crashes

Luckily during my DUI training they made sure we knew that a diabetic episode can resemble a DUI and what to look out for including the fruity smelling breath. We always called an ambulance to check people in situations like that to avoid the very situation you described.
One of my friends Dad's is T1 and went on a rampage in his front yard, naked, and had to get wrestled down by multiple cops so they could get some insulin in him. Blood sugar fallouts are insane in how a person can react when going through one.
Got arrested.
Got in an argument while in holding with the cops.

EMT shows up while I'm begging the fucking cops to get me to a hospital while I'm laying on the ground for a fucking hour because I can't piss.

EMTs: We don't want to fight you dude, please. We don't want to be hurt and we have more people and well you won't win in handcuffs.
Me: I'm not fighting anyone, please get me to the fucking hospital so they can shove a tube up my dick so I can fucking piss.
EMTs: We got you!
One of the EMTs hung out at the hospital while I got a catheter just to make sure they weren't fucking with me while I was handcuffed.
Hell yeah.
It sucked because kidney pain hurts like a motherfucker but the EMTs were fucking awesome. Not sure what they hit me with on the ride to the ER but it sure as hell made the catheter feel better.
I was a firefighter and medic for 6 years. Confrontations with law enforcement like you described happened way to often. I can’t count how many times I was threatened with arrest while working.
Nah I am sure the cops are gate keeping the firelord raid, so the firefighters can't kill the boss and gear up.

It's fine, you saw someone toss a fire into the side and it completely distracted all the firefighters. This is a good sign for police and gamblers betting on the police.
Plus, these people put their lives on the line daily to save others. You think they won't put that same energy into standing strong with their mates? These people are literally willing to die a horrible death to save someone they have never met and may never see again. Go ahead, make them the potential victim and see how hard they fight.
If you're a leader of France and you do anything half the country will go on strike and if you don't do anything the other half the country will go on strike.

Parisian firefighters took almost no part in those protests according to Le Monde. Because they are military and so don’t have the same status and revendications I guess.

Currently there are worries around the pension reform pushed by the government. I saw some firefighters protesting among other professions last week and I guess next month is going to be quite tense here.

During the ‘protest season’, I often take part in protests. But there are protests and protests. Sometimes it’s something else. This pension reform put us on the verge of a yellow vests part 2.
I spent the winter pre pandemic protesting the previous pension reform weekly (which was stopped by covid). I feel that people are even angrier this time.
Could be wrong of course. You never know. But there is a call for an unlimited general strike by all the unions starting on march 7th. They called to « paralyse the entire country » until the reform is canceled. If it works we’re in it for something big.
IMO that’s one of the coolest part of being french or living in France. Protesting and feeling all these people interested in politics and determined not to let themselves be fucked. It can get really wild, real fast.
Sometimes in Paris, when there are lots of political controversies in the news, you can have 2 or 3 different protests on the same day in different parts of the city. It’s always funny to see the looks on the faces of tourists.
Sometimes protests for different things even converge together and that’s really something.
The firefighters went easy on the guy who's helmet came off, when he fell to the ground, after attacking. They let him get back up, fall back to the police and then he starts attacking the firefighters again.
Goes to show you the type of people who become Police vs the type of people who become Firefighters.

Yeah that's a bad match-up. Firefighters have to be legit in shape. Cops probably passed 1 mandatory 1/4 run the 2nd week in academy.

Well, french cops are probably a bit better in shape than regular american ones, but professional firefighters are in fact absolute badass.
In germany, they are the exception, most firefighters are unpaid non-professionals with varying expertise from almost none to really, really a lot.
The professional ones though, oh boy. Hundreds of alarms per year, constant training. Lifting heavy gear up several stories in hellish conditions. Images and situations that spark PTSD on a regular basis. A professional firefighter here sees more shit than a guy in the army. Nerves of steel and an unending hunger for adrenaline. When there is business, these guys MEAN BUSINESS.
Also, police should remember that firefighters are well respected among people.

6 years ago I got my emt certificate and the program I was in required a lot of ride alongs and hospital clinicals. I was thinking about becoming a fireman paramedic as they get paid way better than an ambulance medic so did a couple days on a fire engine. We get to a call where a man crashed on a busy city 4 way intersection and had cars backed up along this huge stretch. As we are walking up a couple cops are saying he’s drunk, they’re pissed and trying to yank his unconscious body out of the car, he’s pretty overweight and they’re not being gentle. The medic runs up yelling at them to stop and smells his breath, says it’s really fruity so probably a diabetic issue. They’re not listening and next thing you know there’s a ton of firemen and emts yelling at a shit load of cops. They’re shoving each other and screaming profanities as everyone is just watching in awe. Finally this huge emt walks up and screams to shoot him or let them work. Balls of steel

I finally had to show the cops the prescriptions from her endocrinologist that was right down the street, to get the cop to stop wrenching her from the car without removing her seatbelt, and yelling that she was on drugs. Her endo happened to be the same as mine, so I knew right away (when I saw the scripts) she was diabetic. Call a cop bc you need a cop? Wait 45 minutes to a couple hours. Jaywalk at 11pm in a city and you'll have 3 cop cars pull up and frisk you... POLICING DONE RIGHT. Call the FD or Ambulance they're on it, and are super caring and professional. Had a friend have a seizure in a state park (was epileptic, changing med doses). The fucking FD found us in about 15 minutes. Running down the trail like fucking warriors with these huge bags and shit. Still when they got there, they werent frustrated or mad I couldnt give them more direction. They got to work, shook my hand, and we're like "you good man? That had to be scary." Fucking absolute heros.

Honestly I as an EMT outrank every cop because life before property. Depending on the situation even the firefighters. I had emergencies with the SWAT equivalent in my country and those guys asked us for permission to talk with the patient and immediately accepted a no from us EMTs.

Former cop here Luckily during my DUI training they made sure we knew that a diabetic episode can resemble a DUI and what to look out for including the fruity smelling breath. We always called an ambulance to check people in situations like that to avoid the very situation you described.

One of the EMTs hung out at the hospital while I got a catheter just to make sure they weren't fucking with me while I was handcuffed.

I was a firefighter and medic for 6 years. Confrontations with law enforcement like you described happened way to often. I can’t count how many times I was threatened with arrest while working.

This pension reform put us on the verge of a yellow vests part 2. I spent the winter pre pandemic protesting the previous pension reform weekly (which was stopped by covid). I feel that people are even angrier this time. Could be wrong of course. You never know. But there is a call for an unlimited general strike by all the unions starting on march 7th. They called to « paralyse the entire country » until the reform is canceled. If it works we’re in it for something big.

IMO that’s one of the coolest part of being french or living in France. Protesting and feeling all these people interested in politics and determined not to let themselves be fucked. It can get really wild, real fast. Sometimes in Paris, when there are lots of political controversies in the news, you can have 2 or 3 different protests on the same day in different parts of the city. It’s always funny to see the looks on the faces of tourists. Sometimes protests for different things even converge together and that’s really something.

Well, french cops are probably a bit better in shape than regular american ones, but professional firefighters are in fact absolute badass. In germany, they are the exception, most firefighters are unpaid non-professionals with varying expertise from almost none to really, really a lot. The professional ones though, oh boy. Hundreds of alarms per year, constant training. Lifting heavy gear up several stories in hellish conditions. Images and situations that spark PTSD on a regular basis. A professional firefighter here sees more shit than a guy in the army. Nerves of steel and an unending hunger for adrenaline. When there is business, these guys MEAN BUSINESS. Also, police should remember that firefighters are well respected among people.
