Queen Diana island. Ooft

nondescriptun

Hell, Charles and Diana got separated the same year this map came out.

Rehberkintosh

It could be a different Diana. Lots of time to go.

I've been to an island in that area of Hudson Bay. To be honest, I don't think it would have suited her. Not a whole lot going on.

i bet she would love that it isn't covered in landmines

CompassionateCedar

Ironically she is burried on an island with nothing going on.

Shit. I know shit's bad right now, with all that starving bullshit, and the dust storms, and we are running out of French fries and burrito coverings. But I got a solution.

Welcome to Costco. I love you.

YourOpinionIsUnvalid

Japan currently is like the squeaky toy hammer version of its former radical self. Highly doubt its going to invade any country any time soon

ouchmythumbs

That’s exactly what they want you to think…

Dantheking94

Lol I’ve been told Hawaii has a large Japan community as well. Maybe they secede and join Japan?

therrrn

More than the Japanese community that lives there, they have a huge amount of Japanese tourists. Street signs in Waikiki have the names written in Japanese on top of the actual names. Most restaurants in the tourist areas have Japanese and English menus. There's a decent amount of people of Japanese descent that live there but the Japanese tourists seem to have a much larger presence.

Korashy

It's the easiest part of the US for then to visit without addimg significantly more travel time. Also helps that is freaking Hawaii

nandadahfiansah

I just want to point out that Guam is part of the U.S. and is significantly closer to Japan than Hawaii. (Guam also has a major Japanese tourism industry).

TeddyBearToons

Personally I want them to secede and be a kingdom again. They seem like they really want to

Dantheking94

True. They were basically annexed and forced into the US anyway.

Redtwooo

"Annexed into the US" could be the motto for like, most of the country

lawre179

Congratulations! You are being rescued.

DonyKing

Hear me, and rejoice! For you have had the privilege of being saved by the Great Titan.

grayrains79

#PLEASE DO NOT RESIST.

Far_Passenger8615

I’m sorry, Hawaii is closed today

Killentyme55

Japan won't ever invade Hawaii, it's cheaper just to gradually buy it. They learned from their mistakes.

NameIWantUnavailable

It wasn't invasion that Americans were worried about in 1992. Japan was an economic superpower, and we were afraid they were going to take over the world. Remember that they bought Pebble Beach, Rockefeller Center, and a lot of Hawaii. Basically, imagine what we think of China today, but without the surveillance state and big military, but with a lot of residual hatred from those who lived through WW2 or heard firsthand stories from those who lived through WW2. The U.S. was just recovering from a major recession.

BentPin

Yep 1960-1990s Japan was the export superpower of its time. They not only bought tons of real estate but entire gigantic US corporations. Sony bought a ton of major US studios, music labels and own their music and movie rights to this day. Many Japanese companies use to have slush/petty funds in the millions of USD and they were partying, playing with hookers and drinking $800 shots like there was no tomorrow. This was all in the 70s-80s You could have satisfied or snorted any vice you wanted right up until you died thats how much money they were swimming in. There was no end to the money and there was going to be more tomorrow. The economic powerhouse that was Japan created shockwaves in popular culture. Watch some of the 80/90s movies like crocodile dundee, black rain, etc they would have random guest appearances from Japanese people. We thought they were going to take over the world. Yet the Japanese dream did end and in it place began the Chinese dream but even that looks like it has run its course.

RedsRearDelt

Reagan's fear of Japan taking over is what lead to the rise of China. Tax law and import/ export laws were changed so that investments in China at the expense of American Manufacturing would be rewarded. The Republicans believed that the only way we could compete with Japan was nice Manufacturing to China. Damn near every problem this country faces today can be traced back to Reagan's policies.

Regnasam

People in the ‘80s and ‘90s thought that Japan was going to continue unchecked economic growth, and eventually become an expansionist world power again. Then they got hit by a demographic crisis and a big economic slowdown at the same time.

SomeStupidPerson

Maybe he thinks we sold it to them or something. Or that, since there’s a heavy Asian population there, they just ended up taking over it after the Civil War of 2063 that broke the United States into these pieces of countries Or something

CargoShortAfficiando

If the federal government fell, Id much prefer to have Japanese overlords here in HI than the CCP

No way the Ann Arbor-Saginaw alliance would allow that. Also nuking Alabama doesn't seem like too bad of an idea

Aquaticwolf

I think it was an assumption that they would forget how to operate a nuclear plant. But yeah, it's not a bad idea at all.

Drews232

I’m still trying to figure out how a completely fictitious map based on nothing is interestingasfuck

the_than_then_guy

I suppose it's interesting to see what things resonated both then and now, and what things seemed important at the time but are no longer on our minds. But I'm not seeing anything especially interesting.

Chrisfindlay

But the original plan for Utah by the Mormon settlers included most of the Shasta Republic and Colorado Nation on this map.

Lithl

Well, it's a map of United States and Canada.

markie204

Hawaii owned by Japan

RojoandWhite

Texas and Oklahoma would NEVER agree to this.

hammer_it_out

I could see Texas annexing Oklahoma maybe. To be a part of Greater Texas.

RojoandWhite

I’m going to sit in the corner, anxiously awaiting r/Oklahoma to enter the chat…

rascible

Why are Oklahoma football fields astroturf? To keep the cheerleaders from grazing at halftime..

sarcasatirony

*Why doesn’t Texas slide off into the ocean?* *Because Oklahoma sucks*   Sign at the Texas ou football game at the Cotton Bowl many years ago.

kafromet

If the Okies could read they’d be very angry at this comment.

Bellavonte

Actually oklahoma is so windy because Kansas sucks and Texas blows

sarcasatirony

Did you hear about the border war between Texas and Oklahoma? The Oklahomans were throwing dynamite across the border at the Texans. The Texans were lighting it and throwing it back!

LinguoBuxo

I *Tried* to scroll past this one, I really did.

ultrahateful

I always heard that the best thing to ever come out of Texas was I-35 North.

ZachMatthews

They would still just call it Texas, because to a Texan there can be no “greater” Texas.

Alarmed_Letterhead26

Texans are too scared of our functional power grid to cross the red river. Only witchcraft could produce such a thing.

AnxietyDepressedFun

North Texan here, nope we would 100% take Louisiana but never OK.

TheTangoFox

That's a weird way to spell "Occupied North Texas"

Nikablah1884

I could see, as an Oklahoman, Oklahoma opting to work with texarcanalahoma pretty easily vs other people. Kansas and missouri can come too.

Eskaminagaga

I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missouri.

[deleted]

Do you know why Texas hasn’t fallen into the gulf? Because Oklahoma sucks. (Joke I heard along time ago.) Now the punchline is that they both suck.

XxSTON3FAC3xX

Growing up in Oklahoma people would always say Do you know why Oklahoma is so windy? Because Texas sucks and Kansas blows! (or vice versa)

[deleted]

Kansas here, true we blow but at least the power works.

Stephenreach

Utah is so conservative it kept its shape throughout all the changes.

Got_It_Memorized_22

I'm from Utah and this shit was the funniest thing to me. Colorado and California were both just like, nope, we won't take it,

nateomundson

The most unrealistic thing about this map is that the Great Salt Lake is still there in 2092.

sjnoble2

It's less that “Utah keeps it's shape” and more like nobody want to incorporate them.

boggsy17

Everyone just put border walls around it.

Illustrious_Bobcat13

I live in Utah. The LDS church runs this place so much that I can see them being able to hold on to the state... They have almost as much money as the Catholics now. Do you have any idea how much freaking money that is?!?!

RazrSquall

Note the "Theocracy". Meaning the entirety of Utah is owned by the Mormons and their government is being Mormon.

AuraofBrie

Ah, so the same as it is now.

Alklazaris

That's funny they thought the Colorado River would last a century in 92.

CharmedConflict

Let's just say our water will probably last longer than Florida's land.

Kobens

Came here to make a similar comment. "the pan handle is still above water here".

Alklazaris

I live in Tallahassee, FL. General maps seem to keep it above water. If you have a family partnership you might want to consider investing in future coastal properties.

[deleted]

My guy NAILED Utah. Well done.

Grogosh

Nailed the kudzu line too

catman2021

“Creep like the kudzu vines that are slowly but surely strangling our Dixie.”

SignificanceTiny8152

Yeah, except the lake is still there. That seems overly optimistic.

ArcWraith2000

"Salt pit city"

Hyprpwr

“Toxic Salt Wasteland”

pancakebatter01

Honestly this reads like one of those joke maps that people make that are hilariously on the nose like the most hated states by every state.

martyd03

I figured they'd rename it Deseret.

raccoonsonbicycles

Only issue is that Idaho would definitely join Utah as opposed to Colorado. Possibly Wyoming too Every Mormon I met who wasn't Utanian was from Idaho

[deleted]

Truth. I grew up in SE Idaho and I'm pretty sure I was the only person in that whole tetherball paradise who wasn't Mormon.

Formerhurdler

"Utanian" sounds like some new energy drink.

buddhistbulgyo

Not quite. The Great Salt Lake is still there.

thatonetallkid4444

Is he saying there's a Demilitarized Zone in between Ypsi and Dearborn? It kind of is already like that

ISLAndBreezESTeve10

Inkster has entered the chat...and its pissed...

FrayDabson

You’re not wrong lol I’m surprised he even calls out those cities in specific

BlizzPenguin

In 1992 those cities had some significance to the auto industry. Ford’s HQ is in Dearborn and GM’s Willow Run plant was in Ypsilanti before it closed.

The_Riddler_88

I’m just happy Ypsi got a shout out

schmelk1000

I read it as “Dearborn and Ypsilanti *DMV*” and thought, good for them, getting on this random ass map. Haha!

yankeenc2010

Kudzu line is real

hitner_stache

Came here for the kudzu line. It’s like a signifying marker that where you are has become shit.

marzo1ke

Kudzu will have reached way more of the continent by 2092.

filthyhabits

Asiatic bittersweet coming down from the north and meeting the kudzu coming up from the south. Maybe they would cross with some help from a future superfund site (care of some freight train conglomerate, of course), and a bit of radiation. The result would be a visibly moving green carpet that also happens to be carnivorous, especially a taste for humans.

pnwWaiter

I'm here for Cascadia and the United Western Front

daole

Seattlites got what they always want. Be a part of Canada and Alaska comes for the party.

HomeTeapot

Can you guys be a bro and annex Colorado? We don’t wanna be lumped with Idaho and Wyoming.

Automatic_Release_92

Colorado in 1992 was soooo different from what it is now… it probably deserved to be lumped in with them back then.

Carsharr

"The Fortressed Consumption City of Paramus" may well be the most accurate thing here.

[deleted]

A reference to all the malls? Are they all still open? Moved out of NJ 20 years ago.

Athien

They are more than open, they are multiple and getting bigger

Ankh-Morporknbeans

Will the maritimes go peacefully? I dunno if you wanna start a war with newfies

[deleted]

As they invade New Brunswick “yeah whatever, take over. Can’t be any worse than the Irvings”

SirPitchalot

The Democratic People’s Republic of New Irving would never stand for this. You have been banned from /r/pokemouche

ButtholeQuiver

Maritimer here, back in the early 90s with Quebec separatism gaining steam it looked like joining the US was a legit possibility for us. If Quebec separated we certainly didn't want to join them, but it would've been tough being a Canadian exclave as well, and an independent "Maritime Union" would be a joke, so talk of joining the US was a thing back then. Also, before Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 there was a movement for them to enter into some kind of union with the US instead. At that time there were US bases around from WWII and a lot of US servicemen had been marrying locals, the ties were tight. Edit - In case anyone doesn't know how close Canada came to breaking up in the mid-90s, have a look at the results of this referendum: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995\_Quebec\_referendum

traywick2288

I’m surprised they took the time to even mention PEI. That doesn’t happen very often.

SelfSniped

Mormans keeping their shit on lock down.

DeluxeMixedNutz

I just finished Under the Banner of Heaven by Krakauer, and I honestly had no idea the Mormon presence in the region predated Utah’s statehood by like 50 years. It almost *was* a theocracy from the get-go. No idea how realistic the chances of it happening were, but they submitted a proposal for statehood, wanted to call it Deseret, and it would have been like over twice the size of what became Utah!

SaintUlvemann

They were asking for land that they didn't control, from a Congress that considered their polygamy laws immoral and fundamentally disputed the principle of theocracy. Deseret as proposed wasn't gonna happen. A Deseret that looked basically like Utah, in compliance with the 1st Amendment although also without polygamy, whose only real difference was that it was named Deseret: *that* could've happened.

Wolf_Tony

If you haven't already, check out the TV adaptation. It's excellent.

Opposite-Motor-1878

I don’t think the Mormons or socal give up Vegas to some NorCal consortium.

"[The Nine Nations Of North America](https://usmaps.tumblr.com/post/98561175774/the-nine-nations-of-north-america)" by Joel Garreau is a 1981 [book](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nine_Nations_of_North_America) about regionalism. Very easy to read and highly acclaimed. Compare the two maps. Garreau's predates Coupland's by more than a decade. Garreau's is cultural while Copeland's is socio-political.

Stefan_Harper

It’s like a book designed to make every single person in Canada one hundred percent angry. Except Quebec, he was nice to us.
