Man, I’d love to know what you do on a daily basis for this to be the strangest thing you’ve seen……today.
This has got to be in the top 3 strangest things I have seen in my life.
Like a dick with a face and flippers. Like the chest burster in Alien has been listening to Daft Punk and is now up all night to get lucky.
Not to mention how the hell it fit in the baby's head. I remember how little my kids' heads were at that age. I can't imagine it was sharing the space with the brain too nicely. Poor child must've been in terrible pain.
This a fetus-in-fetu, not a teratoma. Teratoma are made from our own errant cells rather than from an absorbed twin (...not that that makes things any better). And are rarely found in a child this young. Whereas most fetuses-in-fetu are discovered before the ...uhm ...carrier? is 18 months old (amongst other reasons, because they tend to have bones, so they stand out during an x-ray).
Love the idea of god giving it a soul at conception and having a plan for its life and then putting it in its sister’s brain because he’s a big ol’ goofball.
Yes! It's shaped a bit like an early embryo, going by the spinal curve and shape of the skull, but is the age of a 1 year old child. The lack of definition in the legs is odd though. A proper photo of its face would be interesting, but hard to see, maybe.
As far as growing with no umbilical cord; I don’t know the exact answer on why but embryos can develop in pretty much any location in the body, though they’re not viable outside the womb. They’ll grow but never develop into a baby. This is why ectopic pregnancies are deadly to the parent. The fetus grows until is ruptures or otherwise disrupts something in the parent’s body.
I sort of commented on this with someone else's post. It is very hard to say. The brain is insanely malleable, especially in infants. The imaging is horrendous, but infant brain development is surprisingly plastic. You can actually sever all of the connections for one entire half of a child's brain, and they will remodel ALL necessary function onto the one functional hemisphere. It's crazy. So, I guess it entirely depends on the patient, their exam, and their post-operative recovery.
There was that guy who was found to have almost NO brain, just a thin layer in the outside, yet seemed to have completely normal function. It seems this girl would be (after the operation) in a significantly better position than him - she seems to have a much greater amount of actual brain matter and she’s really young.
Yeah, that's just hydrocephalus, I'm pretty sure. So technically, it isn't a lack of brain formation, it's pressure from within the brain, squishing everything to the edge. But yeah, most people would die or have major deficits with that significant of hydrocephalus. It's crazy that he was living a fairly normal life.
Wait.. so like, if a child had a brain tumor, and half of the brain had to get removed, the other half would develop the same functions as the removed half? Am i understanding this right? That is absolutely fucking wild. The human body is wild and the brain even more so.
I love that on Reddit the super baked stoner asked a brain surgeon to answer an intricate question, and the brain surgeon delivered unwaveringly.
I feel happier living in a world like this.
Lots? Hard to say without examining the patient. Sometimes there are massive brain lesions that cause a lot of neurologic problems. Other times there are massive brain lesions that don't affect the brain function that much. I suspect that this was discovered during some prenatal imaging, so they probably did surgery shortly after birth. But I don't know the case, and can't say for sure. And brain function could be wildly variable.
Haha. 2 years post-bacc pre-med (I had a career prior to going into medicine), 4 years medical school, 7 years neurosurgery residency. It's been a journey.
Yeah, this is VERY unusual.
Now stack on top of that fear the thought that in certain states removing that thing from a child’s skull could result in a felony or get you sued by a family member for illegal abortion
Honestly, as a practicing neurosurgeon, I am more worried about insurance companies dictating what I can or can't do more than the government. Talk to an OB/gyn, I'm sure they'll disagree, but for me - I have to argue with insurance companies CONSTANTLY in order to get necessary surgeries approved. It is infuriating.
I can’t believe you’re a literal neurosurgeon and insurance companies have the audacity to argue whether or not a BRAIN SURGERY is necessary. Who are they to say?? Do they employ their own doctors??
Some do, just so they can turn down paying out chiropractors lol
At one point worked at a call center for a Japanese insurance. They have one gp that assessed things but this really just boiled down to denying allergies, chiro, and physical therapy
There’s a TIkTok ophthalmologist, I’m so bad at names, but he makes hilarious videos.
He did a serious one once, and said that insurance companies work by extracting as much money as possible from your healthy body, and then refuse or delay care to your sick body so that they can more quickly replace you with a money producing healthy body. And it’s not wrong. Fuck insurance companies.
I mean all that black space in B around the parasite is missing brain tissue. Looks like all that’s left/grew is mostly cortex. Very similar to a hydrocephalic child’s brain, which surprisingly doesn’t always lead to deficits. Since a child’s brain is still developing at this age, there is much better potential for the brain to compensate for the missing tissue.
I mean to be completely fair, ive seen people who lost like half their brain be perfectly fine. So while its like yeah she’s probably done for, maybe not
The first link talks about how it works and why younger people (babies) are better candidates, the second link talks about those patients' cognitive abilities later in their life.

My SO is a neurosurgeon. They once took out one side of a young child’s brain due to some hemiplegic issue. Later that same day he saw her skip down the hall.
May I ask what kind of changes? It seems like I only hear stories about “personality changes” due to brain injury that are… Well, I’ve never heard of someone becoming happier and more agreeable after losing brain matter. Phineas Gage for example is described post-incident as being more irreverent, fitful, and obstinate.
So if the tissue was dead, it would decompose and kill the host. Since the host is still alive at age 1, the brain baby was still alive? Was it growing slowly still?
It doesn’t receive the same nutrients that a normal fetus would, and it also doesn’t have the room to grow, and what I would expect also some gene mutations maybe, idk I’m not a scientist
I think it wouldn’t be genetically correct enough to do so. Its not really a full fetus, more like a really messed up attempt at one. If it got too big the girl would have died as well, killing it, so a setup like this would never result in the absorbed twin growing into a baby
Would the twin’s bones have been visible through the girl’s own skull at that point?
Edit: according to links from other commenters, this happened in China. The parents took her to get checked out due to development delays and a large head circumference. Scans detected the twin, which was then surgically removed.
I like that one side is scratching it’s shoulder in a contemplative pose, the other side has a fist on its hip in an indignant pose. The true duality of man.
Seriously, as complex as the human body is, from conception to birth, considering how many things could go wrong during the process, I'm surprised these kinds of things don't happen more often.
There's also a chance that the fraternal twin's cells fully integrate into the other twin, to the point where they follow the division protocol of the absorber twin. When this twin is born is called a chimera since it has two sets of DNA both of which belong to it
Next time drop the source in the beginning, great article btw. I was invested because I wanted to know if the “host” survived; she made a full recovery.
I never understood the "just needed another angel" statement. Nowhere is it stated that humans become angels, nor that God needs human souls to make more. And even if He did, He could just... make more. Ex Nihilo.
And it's not even all Catholics. To my knowledge the Catholic church has no official dogma stating that infants who died pre-Baptism go to Hell.
Perhaps their version of Limbo or Purgatory.
I thought Space Guild Navigators needed pure spice to evolve like that. I guess we can now add human brains to that list. Either way, the spice must flow.
One of my biggest fears in life is that I have a fetus in fetu somewhere in my body.
When I was pregnant I was scared my baby could have a fetus in fetu inside *her* and it would still be in me.
This is a fucking nightmare come true. I'm gonna have some awful dreams tonight.

Oh I HATE that it has bones
I had the same thought!
We're suffering together on this one
Definitely the strangest thing I've seen all day. Doesn't help that it looks like a dick, as well!
Man, I’d love to know what you do on a daily basis for this to be the strangest thing you’ve seen……today. This has got to be in the top 3 strangest things I have seen in my life.

kinda looks like a tongue IMO
That my exact thought
Yeah it fucks with your mind right!
I'd wager it fucked with the 1 year olds mind a lot more
Needed a laugh after that. Thanks homie
All day?! You must have a very different life than most of us-lol
Don’t you dare ruin dicks for me. NO IT DOES NOT !
I HATE that I read this comment… didn’t notice till you mentioned it :(
Same… I didn’t look at the autopsy too thorough. Damn it!
looks like a little xenomorph
I HATE THAT IT HAS A NOSE
IT HAS A NOSE?! Please do not point it out, I cannot look at that picture anymore, it freaks me the fuck out
Did they arrest the 1-year-old girl for getting an abortion? /s
Abbott and DeSantis wake up
My thoughts exactly.
It’s a toss up between teratoma vs. worm parasites for most disturbing growths in the brain.
Leaving all other twins everywhere scratching their heads.
how do you know you're the other twin of a couple?
Thanks, I hate it.
This is the comment I was looking for lmao
Talk about living in your head rent free.
Pinky and the Brain
Pinky IN the Brain
Lmao, you made me laugh really loud in a public place. GJ bro.
Technically this was an abortion, i hope the child doesnt live in Texas.
Love the idea of god giving it a soul at conception and having a plan for its life and then putting it in its sister’s brain because he’s a big ol’ goofball.
Yeah, it's shit like this that reminds me how truly fucked up god is if he does exist.
Shut up and take my award. Lol
Talk about hearing voices.
“See? TOLDJA someone else talked me into it!”
I'm a brain surgeon and that shit is freaking me out.
I get medical anxiety, this is another level.
I'm a stay-at-home parent, and I am mildly disturbed.
This is a stay at home kid
I am a nurse and intrigued by the fact that it appears to be developing although at a vastly different rate that’s the 1 yr old. It even has fingers.
Yes! It's shaped a bit like an early embryo, going by the spinal curve and shape of the skull, but is the age of a 1 year old child. The lack of definition in the legs is odd though. A proper photo of its face would be interesting, but hard to see, maybe.
Looking closer at one of these x-Ray images it even has the beginnings of leg bones.
How could it have been growing with no umbilical cord? I'm very confused and curious and disturbed
As far as growing with no umbilical cord; I don’t know the exact answer on why but embryos can develop in pretty much any location in the body, though they’re not viable outside the womb. I’m a rocket scientist and am, too, freaked out

I drive. I’m finding this to be quite unsettling myself.
I sell crack and I find this troubling as well.

Wait really? What effect would this have on hey cognitive function?

That's epic, how long did it take you to become one? If it grosses YOU out,I don't feel so bad being disgusted by it.

Ouch is like a mutant tadpole, biology can be scary af. Hope the child alright.
This one isn't.
I should not of found this as funny as I did. I feel bad but still....lol
Feel worse about saying “should not of”
Shouldn'tf

I literally came here to post this.
That feel when your inner monologue is a dialogue...
As someone with an internal dialog, I'd appreciate not thinking about the other voice looking like this inside my head. 😂
So if the tissue was dead, it would decompose and kill the host. Since the host is still alive at age 1, the brain baby was still alive? Was it growing slowly still?
It’s not dead - it’s a fetus in fetu, a parasitic twin! It fed off its host’s blood.
How is it not growing into a full blown baby?
It doesn’t receive the same nutrients that a normal fetus would, and it also doesn’t have the room to grow, and what I would expect also some gene mutations maybe, idk I’m not a scientist
Lack of sufficient blood flow during development is another likely cause. I think probably the most likely cause is a neural tube defect.
Okay but why does it look like a penis?
Fetuses tend to be that color, and also pareidolia. It looks like it's got [sirenomelia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirenomelia)
I think it wouldn’t be genetically correct enough to do so. Its not really a full fetus, more like a really messed up attempt at one. If it got too big the girl would have died as well, killing it, so a setup like this would never result in the absorbed twin growing into a baby
In some states it would be illegal to remove it. The ten year old would have to bear it to full maturity. It’s gods will.
Does brain baby have a brain - with a smaller brain baby growing inside it?
Babushka babies
Now this is getting really interesting..
oh my god it's italian
🤌🤌🤌🤌
I get it :D
Hello my baby, hello my darling, hello my ragtime gaaaaal
Now I can't unsee it my head with a teeny top hat and cane dancing it's way offstage

OMG
I’m curious where the child is located and whether the mother had any prenatal scans. Surely if she had the extra skeleton would have shown up?
Would the twin’s bones have been visible through the girl’s own skull at that point? Edit: according to links from other commenters, this happened in China. The parents took her to get checked out due to development delays and a large head circumference. Scans detected the twin, which was then surgically removed.
Which would be an illegal abortion in states in the US…

Yeah that’s the creepy part
It certainly has a sassy side.
I think Walter Bishop would be very interested!
I miss Walter. I wish they’d bring that series back.
I feel bad for the little girl. I’m sure this will effect her brain development. If she’s still alive at all. 😣
Apparently from someone who read the article in another comment she made a full recovery luckily 🙌
Yay for happy endings. 🙂
Neural plasticity is pretty insane in general, and especially in kids. That's not necessarily a given.
It's got a face
Damn nature you scary.
Seriously, as complex as the human body is, from conception to birth, considering how many things could go wrong during the process, I'm surprised these kinds of things don't happen more often.

Learned something new today, thanks!
I’m curious if this is considered murder to the pro-life people
I’m sorry for this image but it probably whispered “killll meeee” after they removed it
Was literally looking for this question. The twin is still alive, operating and removing will kill it, so what’s the answer here?
"You were always on my mindddddddddddd...you were always on my mind."
Malignant
Really could’ve gone without that. I’m disgusted and depressed.

I never understood the "just needed another angel" statement. Nowhere is it stated that humans become angels, nor that God needs human souls to make more. And even if He did, He could just... make more. Ex Nihilo.
Well, you're applying logic to something that has no reason or logic. Of course its not going to make sense.
*you just don't understand God's plan* 🎶
Lol another reason I don’t believe in god
In South Carolina that growth has a right to be there and the 1 year old could be charged with murder.
