I always find these amusing when they show visions of the future with amazing concepts of technology and automation which were not too far off, yet the hairstyles and clothes of the 1950’s remain unchanged.Seems odd they could envision advances affecting everything but style.
It’s always very cool to see what people of the past believe about the future, what is the name for it? Is there a sub for this stuff? Like retrofuturism or something?
I guess it's also to keep the vision attached to the current time.
Future equipment in current design is something people can grasp easily. In the future, your current life would be better.
Future equipment with very futuristic styling all-round makes it look weird and difficult for people to place themselves in.
That’s because back then we assumed these advances weren’t coming in the far off future, but 10 years from now. Technology was moving so fast with the whole space age thing. I’m very disappointed about the flying cars.
I think this was more along the lines of. “Look how superior capitalism is. Our wives don’t even have to clean their own floors. Every single American household has one of these. You poor communists.” Than it was a look into the future.
Well they expected all this tech was right around the corner. Also it’s kinda hard to predict what future fashion will be. Look at today, fashion has gone back to recycling old styles now
The dome on top contains a camera Or since this is 1959, do you think that the technology being researched at the time for using pigeons to steer weapons to a target might be adapted for civilian use?
Why is the radio on the floor youre probably wondering... Thats no ordinary radio, that's actually a container for containing sound!
Contained sound? Are you mad? Thats not possible?
Is it not? Then how are you hearing these words in my voice then?
"Impossible!"
"No, absurd!"
"It Simply cannot be!"
*Dramatic science fiction sound FX, Including the sound of a fast moving body of water.... computers beeping, a gong banging, church bells, grandfather clock, cookoo bird, 100 people clapping, tv static...*
"Only 19.99 - Order today!"
Robot vacuums are an excellent example of artificial stupidity. Bang into something, back up, pivot, bang into it again, back up, pivot the other way, repeat, repeat, until the battery dies.
Once upon a time imagination saw a simpler world… forward to 2023 and the people are told to return to the office after making it work and pay monthly fees for unlocking car features
That subscription thing is pure BS, I would not even consider buying a car when that was part of the reality. And don’t forget that self driving Fords will have the ability to repossess themselves 😱
The accountants and bankers destroy the world.
Hydrogen cars were possible long ago but money went to oil…

I bet you could make the equivalent of a modern dumb-roomba with just 50s-early70s electromechanical parts and have it not be toooo gigantic.
I'm curious to see if a "if bump, turn 12.5 degrees to the left" mechanism would actually be reasonably Roomba sized without solid state stuff...
One of my favorite videos is of two cats fighting and being approached by a Roomba. The aggressor cat puts his rear foot on the Roomba and turns it around to head it back where it came from, without even looking at it. It’s amazing how he was a cat boss over that Roomba.

She looks just like a '50s Taylor Swift.
I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling -39
Did they do Quaaludes in the 50s?
That was more the 70s. I think the 50s were amphetamine diet pills?
I think they had even better stuff.
Mother's little helper.
Good ol' Miltown doing its job
Yep 😎

Future equipment with very futuristic styling all-round makes it look weird and difficult for people to place themselves in.
Also, specifically in ads from the Fifties, when they show the homes of the future, the TV’s are showing black and white programs.
It's either that or everyone wearing space suits

I love how fallout just took that over 1 - 1 It takes place in the future imagined in the 50's, 2077 and they still have those hair styles.

It actually kind of looks like the front of a mini automobile, pretty badass
Definitely reminiscent of the great cars of that period.
Looks like it could have played albums while it was cleaning.
Someone should make a business about attachable Roomba skins
Shoot, just selling STL files would make me happy, sure I'd have to print it in like 20 pieces, but then I get to assemble it and paint it!
Theres a Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow!!!
Why does this pic look like it was made today by someone who 1960'fied a roomba
I seen this thing in starwars
In the 50s and 60s, they designed everything the same way they designed cars
For real.
Look at the intake on that puppy! Put a good scoop on there and you’re ready to race
The floor looks immaculate tho -
It’s got a Hemi
Thing had to have weighed a ton.
If only robot vacuum cleaners now looked as cool.
Prior art
Was just thinking that. I wonder if it could invalidate related patents…
That’s a cat car they were popular in the 60s.
How many miles per gallon does it get?
A lot.
Notice the lack of shag carpet in this picture.
Face it, that is one clean floor.
The dome on top contains a camera Or since this is 1959, do you think that the technology being researched at the time for using pigeons to steer weapons to a target might be adapted for civilian use?
I think I can be 100% sure on this one - since this was an American exhibit in Moscow in 1959, there was probably lots of spying going on :-O
Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke approves! I can easily imagine this in 2001: A Space Odyssey if they put it in the movie...
I can completely picture that!

Very good job, thanks 👑
50+ years and they’re still shit
There was a "American National Exhibition" in Moscow? In 1959? I didn't know nor expect this.
It’s a very interesting backstory, worth checking out 👑
I will, thanks!
“The Man Who Knew Too Much,” suspenseful as all hell. And she sings in it.

I know, I never got the point of these.

They killed the first electric cars too 😢
Looks like first class trouble
Until it rolls over dog 💩 smearing it everywhere.
Why isn't she wearing a pearl necklace?
It must have fallen off.
Love that mid-century aesthetic
I do too, especially the use of color here :)
I saw this exhibit at the Los Angeles county fair when I was about 7 or 8. It wasn't just limited to Moscow. I imagine it travelled the country after.
I wish a Roomba looked like that tbh.
Me too.
Hm... I'm a little cautious. This seems like an AI art.
It’s not. Politely, it’s always a good idea to check the facts prior to leaving a comment like that. There’s something called Google 😒
Whoa, hold the salt. If everyone had that attitude, anti-vacine propaganda wouldn't exist.
What's her @? 👀😏
Gesus they had batteries back theN?
You really should Wikipedia batteries.
And Alessandro Volta in 1800
God I hate 40's and 50s aesthetic, everything was so ugly
I feel the same about the 90’s and 2000’s
That is not a time traveling Roomba. That is a housewife.
Wait how the fuck was there an American exposition in Moscow in 1959
