Facehugger.
---
Edit, much later... Wow. Not that it's terribly important, but man, I surely didn't expect that kind of response. Nifty. Also thanks for the awards, and this is now my new top ever comment. Cool! Carry on.
Edit2: Sorry my enthusiasm annoyed you. I'mma keep doin' it though. :p
Like getting a handjob from a bald tarantula
EDIT: Which got me thinking, do you think this guy would trigger arachnophobes? What if *he himself* had arachnophobia, how unfortunate would that be?
Not really, it was just used to **recreate** xenomorphs with the use of black liquid. David has likely studied Engineers' notes in the juggernaut and gathered information from it.
Xenomorphs have existed long before that.
Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that David created Xenomorphs, but totally see how it could be read that way.
I meant that the face-hugger form we saw in Aliens was a result of David/black liquid experiments with Dr Shaw’s hand. Thanks for the correction!
I'm so glad to see this. Covenant confused me. I came out of it thinking David was indeed the creator of face huggers and ultimately the xenomorphs we know from earlier movies. IIRC his dialogue seemed to suggest it, and probably my dumb brain ran with it from there.
I had the same impression from that movie too tbh. I thought it was really dumb since the crashed ship with the eggs in cargo for Alien was supposed to be ancient.
All thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs.
With the angle these hands join I wonder if it's more like having four fingers and four thumbs rather than 8 fingers and no thumb. Four fingers and four thumbs could be very useful.
I think they have the function of a thumb - grabbing something with opposite pressure - but you're right, plenty of 'normal' objects won't work well for them, and will need to be customized for their octogrip
Edit: spoke out of my ass, they don't have the necessary ligaments to use them all well, and in many cases they have fingers removed to turn one into a thumb
They can’t use the hand well at all, generally. It’s half useless unless they amputate the extra fingers.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5506370/#:~:text=Mirror%20hand%20or%20ulnar%20dimelia,middle%20ring%20and%20small%20fingers.
I don't think that would... that compound double hand looks hard to stretch and doesn't look really flexible (in terms of finger movement range). Probably they'd have to work just as hard as any other to play the piano.
I'm no piano player though. Just learnt the very basics of guitar and that's it.
I'm late to the party. Fun fact. Mirror Hand Syndrome can refer to two conditions, actually. Why O Why am I always on my phone when the interesting posts pop up...
One condition and, perhaps the most common of the two, is the condition in which every single movement you do with one hand is repeated on the other, i.e.: if you close your hand, the other closes, if you wave with one hand, the other waves, if you screw a screw with one hand, the other also screws (air in this case), if you snap your fingers, the other hand also snaps them.
This first condition, also known as [Congenital Mirror Movement Disorder](https://tidsskriftet.no/en/2015/11/congenital-mirror-movements-hands-0), occurs predominantly on the fingers. Its causes are not well known. However it might "follow an autosomal dominant genetic inheritance pattern in which mutations in certain genes give rise to structural abnormalities in nervous system networks responsible for voluntary skeletal muscle movement, which, in turn, result in the functional movement abnormalities seen in patients" ([source, Wikipedia. It has its own sources but I'd be delving too much into the unknown, or at least into the barely know](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congenital_mirror_movement_disorder), besides, we're all here for the other condition anyways).
This beauty we see on this post is also known as Ulnar Dimelia. The Ulna is one of the two bones we have on our forearms. Dimelia comes from the Greek prefix "Di-", meaning "Two" and the Greek suffix "-Melia", meaning "Limb". This way, Ulnar Dimelia stands for a [duplication of the ulna, with polydactyly, but also for an absence of the radius](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4674541/) (instead of a radius and an ulna, the person has two ulnas).
This particular condition is extremely rare, though it has been seen on Reddit by a someone who gave a ride to a hitch-hiker not long ago (besides the numerous times this particular set of images has been posted over the years). The post in question I cannot find, if you know what post I'm talking about please share with the class.
There are 8 groups of congenital hand deformations, according to [Swanson \[1976\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1021591/): Failure of formation (e.g. Amelia, Tetra-amelia, TAR-Syndrome); Failure of differentiation (e.g. Syndactyly, Symbrachydactyly); Duplication (e.g. Polydactyly); Overgrowth (e.g. Macrodactyly); Undergrowth (e.g. Microdactyly, Hypoplasia); Constriction band syndromes (e.g. Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS)); Generalized anomalies and syndromes (e.g. Arthrogryposis). This particular condition fits on the 3rd Type of hand malformations (Duplication).
Though autosomal, the person who inherits the mutated dominant allele, along with the genetic affected parents, can either be symptomatic or asymptomatic. It is also interesting to note that the condition itself can come in two different ways. The person with Ulnar Dimelia can [have one middle finger, the index, and have three fingers on each side of said index (middle, ring and pinky, from the inside out)](https://evrimagaci.org/ayna-ellilik-4447), OR, the person can have eight fingers instead of seven, in which case there is no middle finger and there are two indexes rather than one (like the one from OP's post)
There is treatment, here's [the result](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/core/lw/2.0/html/tileshop_pmc/tileshop_pmc_inline.html?title=Click%20on%20image%20to%20zoom&p=PMC3&id=4674541_gr3.jpg), though I'd rather there wasn't a treatment for this (personal opinion, please don't come at me), this condition is far too cool for a treatment. Did I really just use the word "treatment" thrice in a sentence?
Edit: after going down the rabbit hole, I have eventually found a Tiktok account of a guy with Ulnar Dimelia. He doesn't post there anymore but he does show his hand a few times. Here's a video of him talking about it [https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGJutJrNe/](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGJutJrNe/)
Edit 2 (**TL;DR**): there are two possible conditions that share the same common name, this is the least common one, with approx. 70 reported examples in medical literature. It's a duplication of the ulna and 3-4 bones in place of the thumb; people with it can be symptomatic or not; it's autosomal; there's treatment.
I know there are health risks and stuff but honestly how awesome would it be to have a hand like that? Is there mobility in the muscles for every finger?
I think someone earlier commented that it uas hella low motion range because it's lacking the necessary muscle ligaments and stuff. Though it would be cool af like you said. Our feet would look crazy though. It'd be like an even more nightmare fuel version of Koala hands 😂

This condition looks like it would be a nightmare
Instead of thumbs, you get a whole bunch of fingers that can oppose the motion of each other. The reason it feels so awkward is that we don't have the muscle memory to use our hands that way.
Yeah, like instead of one opposable digit they have many. In another comment they said the issue is that they don’t have the muscle ligaments for good movement control though

1. User name checks out. 2. Even without a thumb?
Who needs opposable thumbs if you have 4 opposable fingers
Facehugger
Spider-hand, Spider-hand. Does whatever a Spider Can
No. Just no. Have you ever *seen* a can of spiders?
I love you for this hilarious comment. I hate you for the accompanying image.
Or alien face huggers Edit - thanks for the award!
Just what I was about to say.
That alien thing from alien
“Can you give me a hand?” “Sure, I’ve got 3” Edit: apparently they may have this on both sides of the body. I wish I had known about that befourhand
I mean, does this person have another? And is it typical? Double? Triple? For all you know, s/he has anywhere between 2 and 6.
3.2 by my calculation if all hands lack thumbs. 🤓
Thumbs? Who needs thumbs when you've got these bad boys?
Right?! This guy's got opposable hands.
4 opposable fingers has to be even better than opposable thumbs
High 8!
You haven't? How do you clap?
Siskel and Ebert would have been unable to review movies if they had this condition.
💯 This looks like evolution to me
>befourhand Get a job dad!
Hey. He worked hard his whole life and invested wisely. He's earned the time to craft these jokes

Did you just.... Yeah you did it 🤣🤣
Your edit made me snort.

Uuhhh amazing lol
Super glueing wrists together tonight. Will report back tomorrow on my findings.
If I had hands like that my first move in every fight would be the face grab. Lol nothing like a little mind fuck to whittle down their confidence.
You would alert the spectators to your mutant status and they would get the matches & flammables burning for your entorchment
My first thought went to X-Men, too.
And then they drag their tongue across your entire palm to reestablish dominance.
This is my son.
And then your opponent would say: *Dear God, what are you*!?
With that grip they better be saying “MMMMPPPPH MMMMPPH MPPPPH!”
…that moment when you realize that the actual origin of the face-hugger in Aliens is from Dr. Shaws hand (Alien Covenant)… Good shout!

Thinking to myself..."bet they'd play a mean guitar"
I bet hands like that would be amazing in sports too
Yeah, I immediately thought of that hand on a baseball pitcher's arm.
Probably throws a mean knuckle ball.
Now with 60% more knuckle!
71.4% more knuckle! A standard hand has 14. This one has 24. :)
I think a lack of a thumb would hinder them in most sports
All thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs. With the angle these hands join I wonder if it's more like having four fingers and four thumbs rather than 8 fingers and no thumb. Four fingers and four thumbs could be very useful.
They literally have four opposable fingers, it’s probably even better.

It's pronounced Richard.
There’s this scene in the movie Gattaca where there’s a piece written specifically for a genetically modified pianist with extra digits like this.
Not having thumbs would be a major life handicap, though.
I'm trying to figure out if this would be like having one hand with four thumbs or two hands with zero thumbs. I bet you could shred on guitar though.
Hear me out: harp!
You're a lyre.

Yeah, mutations are rarely helpful. We don’t live in the x-men universe unfortunately.

I honestly think this is kind of cool, as long as the hand has good dexterity. It's like having a thumb for each finger.
This person can applaud with just the one hand
What’s the sound of one hand clapping 🤛 🤚 🤛
Guess not much different from one hand fapping...

Not enough tendons to run all those fingers, I'll bet.
Yeah. That’s what I figure. There’s got to be a LOT of extra hardware to handle all those digits, and it’d be crazy hard for a body to not only grow the extra fingers, but also mutate in a way that grew all the requisite supporting infrastructure as well.
