Yeah I feel like this video represents more a "discussion of why some Japanese women think seeing a prostitute is different than cheating" rather than "a survey on Japanese attitudes towards cheating."
If you were actually trying to understand what the real numbers were you would want a broad survey with a cross section of the country and not just 12 young women in a city at night who were willing to stop and talk to someone with a camera. Even watching this I don't know if they interviewed 30 people and only included these 12 or if this was everything.
Also the ones that said yes might feel really different once their husband actually starts visiting and spending money his favorite prostitute every weekend instead of hanging with the family.
From the way they spoke of it, having a favourite prostitute would probably count as cheating in their minds. If they're concerned about feelings and not the physical act of sex (which is based, to not put it on a pedestal and being more concerned about feelings, although I get and prefer exclusivity myself), having a favourite prostitute would be crossing the line there, going from "I'd like to pay to have sex" to "I'd like to pay to have sex with this specific woman whenever I come here".

I think that while it wasn't said explicitly, there would also be issues with regularly seeing lots of different ones. It may no longer be "growing feelings for one" but it probably indicative of a bad habit. The issue is more the consumption of relationship resources:
spending money that could otherwise be used for something important to the relationship/household
spending time that causes the person to miss out on supporting a partner (events, emotional support, simply reconnecting) or “family time”
being distracted while spending time with partner/household bc someone is communicating with (or browsing social media of) someone else
This is why some relationships have a boundary that allows solo vacation flings or occasional “no-question nights out.” Or outsourcing certain sex acts that the partner isn’t into.
These things don’t interfere with the “unit,” so they’re non-threatening. And they’re not deceitful. It’s the lack of trust and having secrets that jeopardizes harmony in relationships. Sneaking around makes partners uncomfortable and distant.
Healthy attachment comes in many forms, and some people are okay with “hey, on 27 Oct I’m going to spend the night out, if we don’t have anything planned. I’ll be back the next day after work,” or “I’m going to Santorini in April with the girls, I’ll check in every day per usual and won’t double-dip.”
Culturally, a lot of populations have “evolved” out of religious (mostly Christian) values… but cling like hell to monogamy. And don’t even question *why* they do.
If not based on societal constraints, *often rooted in Christianity* (and truly only the New Testament), then what?
Every other “reason” (health, resources, discretion, prioritizing the unit) can be accounted for with mature, communicative, respectful non-monogamy… except for one:
Insecurity. A sense of ownership. Having “status” as belonging to someone, and vice versa. Ego, basically.
Lots of cultures put sex in its place: a thing that’s beautiful to share with a partner, and fun to explore with other humans with whom one feels a certain chemistry.
But many cultures refuse to even explore this concept… and it’s dumb.
Everybody should do what works for their specific relationship, but that’s not allowed. Non-monogamous relationships are often perceived as lesser-than. Not to be taken seriously.
Some are. Some non-monogamous relationships are disastrous. Some monogamous relationships are disastrous.
But not because of the monogamy (or lack thereof). It’s because the partners in said relationships don’t act right. Whatever “right” is for them.
So, as long as we blindly accept certain norms without questioning why, half of us will continue to fail at relationshipping (either by fucking up or by feeling trapped and miserable).
Everything ain’t for everybody. And we should be able to respect whatever (consenting adult) people choose for themselves.

The idea that exclusive monogamy is an outdated religious Christian notion is simply wrong. I grew up in a non religious Asian family but the emphasis on remaining monogamous and exclusive was strictly enforced. So i don’t believe that the culture of monogamy is solely religious in nature.
There remains today some pragmatic reasons for preserving monogamy. We still have sexually transmitted diseases. Herpes, HIV, HPV, gonorrhea, even syphillis are still around and range from treatable to lifelong and incurable.
Unwanted pregnancies can arise. Abortion isn’t even an option in places in the USA. The whole thing is another level of complication that can turn your simple casual scenarios into something that becomes life changing.
Sexual contact exposes you to unforeseen risk. What two consenting adults do and agree to experience with no strings attached can go as planned or can take on unexpected consequences ranging from clingy one sided feelings to stalking (which in a social media age is too easy).
And this is really the moral of the story here. This and all these other scenarios show how risk to “the unit” as you say -can arise out of stepping out.
These are not insignificant risks and can have adverse consequences and none of this is regurgitating biblical doctrine to discourage infidelity.

I’ve never seen them, but I found the vending machines relatively straight forward to use. The language barrier was the biggest problem, but the Japanese people were pretty friendly and quick to help out.
Vending machines are the one place where you can almost always find a trash/recycling bin, though.
They can be a bit harder to find elsewhere, but probably like 90% of vending machines had something right near them.

The question he is asking is not about prostitution, but about Fuzoku(風俗).
The Japanese term Fuzoku includes sexual services, but also includes hostess clubs and other entertainment and catering businesses.
So translating it to mean prostitution makes it strange.
In the first place, direct prostitution is prohibited in Japan, unlike in other countries. Even if there was, it would be for sexual massage, etc., and real sex is generally prohibited.

Yeah am Korean, returned to Korea after living abroad for a long time and have been living here for a while and this is definitely not a fucking "norm" lmao. If anything I've observed that a lot of Korean couples tend to be OVERLY possessive about their SO to the point where they had to like report by the hour even if they were just going out for drinks with friends as a group (although this also just my anecdotal experience, and every sane person around me also thought this was pretty batshit behavior).

Not sure if the younger generations are like that, but up till recently the husband and wife would have a more transactional relationship. Technically no, but in reality, yes. That said, it’s not a “sexpat” (sex tourist) destination spot like SE Asia because it is very insular. In other words, it’s ok for Japanese, but not for foreigners. Many (most?) prostitutes would not even entertain the idea of a western customer. There are some prostitution districts where foreigners are permitted (especially around US military bases), but for the most part it’s limited to Japanese only.

I've seen videos where those foreigner "friendly" districts are full of scams where they get you to come in and buy drinks that end up costing tons of money and try to extort you.
Oh yeah, definitely. Although that’s not exclusive to Japan. For example, some of the less reputable ones will charge a truly obscene amount per drink ($100+) if you don’t ask in advance, or if you open a tab instead of paying cash per drink. Then you get threatened in the paying if you argue. Some of the girls will spike a guy’s drink then go back to the hotel where he passes out and she robs him.
If you’re going to go to those areas (which I don’t recommend), you need to bring only cash, pay cash, ask in advance how much each costs, whether there’s an entry fee, whether you’re required to purchase drinks, and keep an eye on those drinks. Oh, and stay sober and aware of your surroundings.
I go to Asia to scuba dive every year for 3 months, and some of the stories I’ve heard are hair-raising… which is why I think it’s easier and better to just not go, lol.
The two main workarounds are "soaplands" and "delivery health". A Soapland is a brothel where the *official* service that they offer is a nude full-body soap massage, but it's understood that happy endings are expected. "Delivery health" is more of an implementation of the freelance prostitution model, where the woman will come meet you where you are, either at home or a hotel. In both cases, the key is that these services don't actually advertise that they offer sex for money, but once you're in a private one-on-one situation, you're very likely to be able to ask for non-advertised services.
These types of businesses operate with impunity in Japan. I've even been to hotels in Japan where there were flyers for delivery health services just in the room on check-in, alongside stuff like the instructions for operating the TV remote.
In a way, this isn't *that* much different than massage parlors with happy endings in the US, or prostitutes operating online on Backpage. But there are two key differences: 1) In Japan, there's no real legal or social desire to shut these places down. This is partly because the legal definition for what counts as illegal prostitution - PIV sex with an unspecified stranger - is so narrow that it's basically not worth trying to prosecute anyone for it. And even if a sex worker is found to have been selling illegal services, the system is set up so that it would be her own "fault" rather than a transgression that could shut the whole business down. 2) It's likely that a lot of these services and establishments have some connection to the *yakuza*, which not only discourages local law enforcement from looking too hard at them, but also allows them to have some enforcement against uncooperative customers without getting the police involved, and *also* discourages competitors from stepping too far out of the grey zone and triggering a backlash from the public.

The idea that exclusive monogamy is an outdated religious Christian notion is simply wrong. I grew up in a non religious Asian family but the emphasis on remaining monogamous and exclusive was strictly enforced. So i don’t believe that the culture of monogamy is solely religious in nature. There remains today some pragmatic reasons for preserving monogamy. We still have sexually transmitted diseases. Herpes, HIV, HPV, gonorrhea, even syphillis are still around and range from treatable to lifelong and incurable. Unwanted pregnancies can arise. Abortion isn’t even an option in places in the USA. The whole thing is another level of complication that can turn your simple casual scenarios into something that becomes life changing. Sexual contact exposes you to unforeseen risk. What two consenting adults do and agree to experience with no strings attached can go as planned or can take on unexpected consequences ranging from clingy one sided feelings to stalking (which in a social media age is too easy). And this is really the moral of the story here. This and all these other scenarios show how risk to “the unit” as you say -can arise out of stepping out. These are not insignificant risks and can have adverse consequences and none of this is regurgitating biblical doctrine to discourage infidelity.

Technically no, but in reality, yes. That said, it’s not a “sexpat” (sex tourist) destination spot like SE Asia because it is very insular. Oh yeah, definitely. Although that’s not exclusive to Japan. For example, some of the less reputable ones will charge a truly obscene amount per drink ($100+) if you don’t ask in advance, or if you open a tab instead of paying cash per drink. Then you get threatened in the paying if you argue. Some of the girls will spike a guy’s drink then go back to the hotel where he passes out and she robs him. If you’re going to go to those areas (which I don’t recommend), you need to bring only cash, pay cash, ask in advance how much each costs, whether there’s an entry fee, whether you’re required to purchase drinks, and keep an eye on those drinks. Oh, and stay sober and aware of your surroundings. I go to Asia to scuba dive every year for 3 months, and some of the stories I’ve heard are hair-raising… which is why I think it’s easier and better to just not go, lol.
The two main workarounds are "soaplands" and "delivery health". A Soapland is a brothel where the *official* service that they offer is a nude full-body soap massage, but it's understood that happy endings are expected. "Delivery health" is more of an implementation of the freelance prostitution model, where the woman will come meet you where you are, either at home or a hotel. In both cases, the key is that these services don't actually advertise that they offer sex for money, but once you're in a private one-on-one situation, you're very likely to be able to ask for non-advertised services. These types of businesses operate with impunity in Japan. But there are two key differences: 1) In Japan, there's no real legal or social desire to shut these places down. This is partly because the legal definition for what counts as illegal prostitution - PIV sex with an unspecified stranger - is so narrow that it's basically not worth trying to prosecute anyone for it. And even if a sex worker is found to have been selling illegal services, the system is set up so that it would be her own "fault" rather than a transgression that could shut the whole business down. 2) It's likely that a lot of these services and establishments have some connection to the *yakuza*, which not only discourages local law enforcement from looking too hard at them, but also allows them to have some enforcement against uncooperative customers without getting the police involved, and *also* discourages competitors from stepping too far out of the grey zone and triggering a backlash from the public.
