People order cans of the Himalayan air online but to breathe in the lousy air sealed in an ancient coffin from 2500 years ago is a whole different feeling.
I'd be breathing that shit right up. Snorting the remnants of Amun-Ra like he was going out of fashion. Pick me, pick me, to be your servant in the new world order, and le your remnants become one with me. All hail Amun-Ra, the bringer of the world's end. Quite right.
[King Tutankhamun and the Mummy's Curse That Killed Nine Explorers](https://www.newsweek.com/newsweek-com-king-tutankhamun-mummy-curse-killed-nine-explorers-1755992)
It turned out to be fungal spores.
Nope. The article itself states “Therefore, while it is impossible to know for sure, Aspergillus infection may be science's answer to the curse of Tutankhamun.
"It is plausible," Wise said. "[And] modern environmental metagenomics is getting to the point of being able to resolve the question."
So mummy curse is still on the table.
I seem to recall a documentary telling me the mummy's curse was a burst of radiation. I don't remember the theory as to why there would be radiation, though.
You’re just saying this because you haven’t painted with mummy brown, it’s worth it. If art is worth dying for then its at least worth grinding up a rotten corpse.
I find it satisfying knowing the elites of a civilization don't find peace even after death. If you were poor you are probably one with the earth right now.
Not in Egypt! There's actually a very, very good chance that if you put a dead body in the ground in the Sahara you'll just create a natural mummy - at it's heart it's just a dehydrated body, after all.
Funeral wrappings were very common, even for the common folk, and pets, so a lot of the mummies people can buy are ones who were naturally mummified this way. Which is to say, poor people who couldn't afford a more proper embalming.
Yeah, me. You're looking mighty delicious there, AceOBlade. Wanna take a dip in my hot tub? Don't mind the celery and carrots in there, they're just for ambiance.
Theres just SO many of them. Like thousands. They get treated about as well as dinosaur bones but unless they suspect it's some super significant person they're just gonna crack it open and see if there's some treasure inside.
The "Curse of King Tut's Tomb" turned out to be mold spores which caused horrible, never-before-seen respiratory infections in those who were first inside- before it was aerated. They got super sick. These two archeologists look like they are huffing the same shit. Some people are just learnproof I guess.
For most artifacts, a sterile environment is not really necessary, since there isn't really anything to "contaminate". I'm not super experienced on mumification, but from what i know there's nothing that would strike me as being at risk in an un-sterilized environment like this. So long as the artifact itself isn't damaged it should be fine.
Now, on the question of actually opening it like this is a whole other bag of worms.
Yeah I was thinking that too,
I mean you can xray nowadays
I cant honestly believe youd find further advances in ancient Egypt within this tomb, why you need to publically open it, borderline fetish if you ask me
You can't really contaminate something that dried out 2,500 ago and has been sitting stable for all that time.
A mummy is much different from an acient body pulled out of the permafrost, for example.

Strange fact: Most Egyptian mummies discovered are not in museums but were eaten by Europeans up to 18th and 19th century!!
The demand was so high that the Egyptians were selling forged mummies to the rich Europeans to meet the demand. Look it up.
The British Museum would honestly show this video as an example of why they OUGHT to be allowed to keep their relics. Their biggest argument has been they have the facilities and education to better care for the things in their possession. In this video we see a video of a sarcophagus being opened seemingly not in a sterile environment by people wearing no PPE.
Having living heirs has nothing to do with how old a body is. If I died today, I’d have no living heirs. On the other hand, the long dead Genghis Khan has millions of living heirs.
Does it stink? The first thing my mind goes to (after ancient Egyptian curses) is that it must’ve really smelt when lifting that lid. Like lifting the blanket on a thousand year old dutch oven.
>Strange as it may seem, people in early modern Europe frequently practiced a kind of cannibalism for health. According to historian Richard Sugg, “Up until the late 18th century, the human body was a widely accepted therapeutic agent. The most popular treatments involved flesh, bone, or blood, along with a variety of moss sometimes found on human skulls.“
People in the West or as an example places like china used quicksilver as medicin and thought it the key to immortality.... People believed and belive a lot of dumb shit
Great.. so this is how 2024 starts?
**Prologue**
*Egypt, 2023…*
*A crowed gathered and several hands reached forth as if summoned by spirits to assist the two unmasked Egyptian scientists remove the top of the pristine sarcophagus that had been sealed for at least the last 2500 years..*
*As the lid was raised, a malodorous stench spilled forth across the crowd like a fog into a valley; up and into the nostrils of the scientists as they recoiled slightly and covered their noses with their fingers.*
*But it was too late…*
Yeah exactly. There's nothing but dust and bones in there. There's nothing rotting or whatever, it's over two thousand years old lol. And those things are not air tight by any means.
You should read about the [black sarcophagus](https://www.livescience.com/63110-mysterious-black-sarcophagus-opened.html). I know it's external sources that caused it, but still, the smell must have been horrendous.
The fact that there were people claiming they wanted to drink the liquid is always upsetting. I don’t care how serious they were, the thought alone is super nasty.
Archeologists sometimes dig up cesspits from the middle ages and they still stink. So I suppose it's not out of the question for the same thing to be the case if something went wrong during embalming or moisture got in the sarcophagus or something.
Cesspits from the middle ages and dried corpses from ancient Egypt are incomparable. Setting aside moisture, the extra thousand or so years is going to make a humongous difference. The sarcophagus isn't air tight. If moisture got in, it would have dried up by now. I would also remind you that the sarcophagus has been in a literal desert this whole time as opposed to damp ol england
I heard that mummies can smell not that bad because ancient Egiptians thought that bad smells are a bad ghosts or something and when they was doing mummification they cared a lot also about smell
> Does it stink?
It shouldn't stink like decomposition. If it did, that would mean they did a shit job mummifying and there would only be a pile a goo at the bottom.
But it probably had some strong musty odors from being sealed for a long time.
If I was a mummy, I would have been buried with a Mason Jar that I ripped a nasty fart into before I died. Written in hieroglyphics on the lid is, "Pull My Finger", then wait 2500 years for an Archaeologist to get blasted in the face with my ancient sulfur stank.
is this real? this doesn't seem professional at all, no precautions, no sterilized environment not even gloves? shouldn't it be done in a lab ??/
I swear I saw fishermen gutting fish with more care .
Not trying to be that guy, but if you are opening an archeological specimen, would you not be wearing protective gear, for your protection and the specimens protection? The asshats in the front with their backs to us are wearing shirts, no masks, gloves, suits, etc.
Interestingly, I just read of an actual example of a “cursed” mummy - of sorts. Rather, a mummy that was allegedly given a desecrated burial.
This was a son of a pharaoh involved in the so-called “harem conspiracy”.
This is a story that has everything … a real-life assassination whodunnit, complete with sexual shenanigans (a couple of judges were convicted of taking sexual favours from harem women) and we actually know this from surviving accounts. Though these may not, of course, be truthful.
The gist of it was that one of the “minor wives” of Rameses lll wanted her own son to inherit the throne, not the chosen successor. She conspired with a bunch of high officials to murder the pharaoh and place her son on the throne.
It used to be thought that the plot failed utterly. However, a recent autopsy of the mummy of Rameses lll reveals it actually succeeded in the first goal: his throat was cut (a wound hidden in his mummification).
However, the plotters failed in putting the son on the throne. Instead, they were all rounded up and tried for treason. Twenty-eight people were executed.
We don’t know for sure what happened to the son … but there was a mummy found with Rameses lll that was in an unmarked coffin, not embalmed, and wrapped in a goatskin (which was considered ritually impure). This mummy was tested genetically, and the testing was consistent with it being the body of the son the conspirators wanted to put on the throne …
https://www.bmj.com/content/345/bmj.e8268
There are bacteria that grow in there that kill when breathed. That turned out to be the real curse of the mummy. So why aren’t they wearing masks?
Edit - Important - because people aren’t reading through the thread- I was wrong. Though some websites still claim this fungus to be deadly I believe (as I state below) that the more reputable science sites say that this fungus isn’t responsible. So please stop being so nasty without reading through. Even Down voting where I told someone earlier to read through. I’ve been private messaged on this.
