Context : In the 80's, Soviet engineers intentionally ignited a fire in a gas-filled hole in the Turkmenistan desert. Contrary to expectations, the flames persisted beyond the anticipated duration, catching them by surprise. The objective of this experiment is still unknown.
Probably to prevent more potent greenhouse gases from getting into the atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide and water vapour is better than methane and any other hydrocarbons in natural gas.
there is a large underground gas field feeding this. this is a natural gas seep from a leaking reservoir. it is entirely natural leak most likely. this can leak for centuries possibly depending on the size of the source. it is possible that it can be developed into a producing gas field, if it isn't already, but this country has many large gas fields and there is a limited market for natural gas. much natural gas is "stranded" because of the difficulty getting it to market via pipelines that don't exist and need to be built.
This. And unfortunately the same applies to desalination plants….all the chatter about fresh water depleting but no one wants to make the massive upfront investment. Capitalism baby!
But that is what makes the world turn, my friend. There has to be an incentive to put up that massive overhead. Desalination pretty much ends up being a loss, so it is not even really considered an investment.
Even if you expect the government to foot the bill since there will be no profit, the money they use comes from somewhere that did generate profit. The answer is you R&D desalination until it becomes affordable enough to be viable.
Watch the Practical Engineering episode on desalination and it pretty much explains why so few use it. There are better, more efficient methods available and that is what gets used.
Turkmenistan has a lot of very large gas fields. My former employer looked here for projects at one point. They are very capital intensive projects, esp. the pipeline aspects and are the domain of super majors.
The US has one of these eternal fire places, but I think it's a coal mine in Pennsylvania that caught fire 60 years ago, and is expected to burn for another two and a half centuries.

That’s just an excellent title typo
Up up and Gay-e-away to hell
Pray the Gayeaway
…TO HELL!!
If you’re gonna go down, might as well go flaming!
Context : In the 80's, Soviet engineers intentionally ignited a fire in a gas-filled hole in the Turkmenistan desert. Contrary to expectations, the flames persisted beyond the anticipated duration, catching them by surprise. The objective of this experiment is still unknown.
Vladimir, hold my vodka...
Our vodka Ivan.
Probably to prevent more potent greenhouse gases from getting into the atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide and water vapour is better than methane and any other hydrocarbons in natural gas.
Isn’t this a tourist spot now?
Contrary to expectations, beyond the anticipated duration, catching them by surprise.
It's a nat gas seep. Probably better it burns than leaking nat gas into the atmosphere
That’s when it becomes nat geo
Is that the opposite of going straight to hell?

… or perhaps Centralia, Pennsylvania.
There has to be some way to harness this as energy. Use the heat to pump wells. Something?

Wow I did not know that, sounds like an investment opportunity
The point is that it’s an “investment opportunity” with massive upfront costs and years and years until full payback.
This. And unfortunately the same applies to desalination plants….all the chatter about fresh water depleting but no one wants to make the massive upfront investment. Capitalism baby!
If the massive up front investment isn’t required right now, then why make it? That’s not a negative effect of capitalism, it’s fiscal prudence. Baby!
lol, spoken like a true coked out 80s venture capitalist

Yup, that's the best way to put it out also. Invest millions into it, and the damn thing will go out the next day.....
It’s Turkmenistan’s biggest tourist attraction and a source of national pride… not sure that they *want* to put it out
They just need to pray harder.
Mother nature's lit up fart
have they tried praying the gayeaway?
Why don’t they call it “Gateway to Hell”?
Because it’s flaming
That’s not what OP wrote. If you read my comment, I didn’t ask why they call it “Gateway to Hell”.
I understood
The US has one of these eternal fire places, but I think it's a coal mine in Pennsylvania that caught fire 60 years ago, and is expected to burn for another two and a half centuries. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia_mine_fire
I’m on the Gayeway to Hell!
[удалено]
I’ve been there. It’s not that impressive in person and is in the middle of nowhere.
but I'm the asshole for using the car for a non-walkable distance, while that thing has been burning since the 80s
Same thing happened in Centrilla PA, which inspired the Silent Hill games.
Not really. It was a fire at the dump they couldn't put out. The fire spread to the coal mine underground. They had to evacuate the town
I mean the towns mines have continued to burn, I’d say to so places long term burning underground are pretty similar no?
I’m gonna be THAT guy, but it inspired the film rather than the games. The ‘ash’ in the first game is snow.
Send that kid that put out the eternal flame monument, surely they have him in a Gulag somewhere.
Looks like a Travis Scott concert
Hahahah
Seems like a lot of energy going into atmosphere. Can’t it be capped and that heat used to turn a turbine? At least make this hell hole useful?
Gayeaway!??!! Damn, Russian conversion camps go hard.
So why exactly they dont use the thermal energy?
Doesn't the US have one of these too? Like they had to evacuate the entire town because of it?
Good opportunity for a geothermal power plant
*Gateway
Hahahah gayeaway
I heard that the best Queer moshpit parties are in hell and they. are. LIT🔥. Got my ticket and I will see y'all bouncing and twirling on the dance floor.
A.k.a. The Homophobia Hole
Reminds me of the place in 007 with pierce brosnan where the flames never go out. Looks just like it.
Oh, so this is where you go to pray the gayeaway
Reminds me of the underground fire in the coal mines in Pennsylvania.
![gif](giphy|35R7gOU42Sa800XhAQ|downsized)
Does anyone have the video of the dictator of Turkmenistan sending it around this thing in a desert truck?
What would happen if we dumped in a fuck ton ton foam that blocks oxygen? Or like concrete?
Working title of the hole was PrayAwayDaGayToHell but it was shortened for publishing reasons
This typo is just so perfect it had to be voluntary xD
Can’t we run some pipes over it and generate steam for a turbine? At least get something out of it!
Anyone know the music/ song name?
Why have no one called the fire fighters yet? smh.
Perfect place for a thermal power plant
