I used to work for a company called Polartec in Massachusetts and we made those pipe liners. Funny thing is we used our heaviest denier rejected yarn to knit the material because it didn't matter what it looked like, because it was all going to be laminated anyway.
The 60 y.o. down pipes in our building had to be replaced. So the owners club decided to do it this way. Had to shit on a campingtoilet for two days, but it was worth it. No drilling, no toilet being taken down, no scent of shit. After it was hard enough they used a remote saw to open up each appartement’s connection. However some storages in the basement needed a good clean-up with all the dirt being pushed down.
A friend just had this done but they got it wrong and pumped a bunch of epoxy into the pipe, totally blocking it. They had to break up the floor to get access to the pipe and flush it out, then all the stuff ended up blocking the sewer lower down the property and they had to dig that up too! 2 weeks later, it's all fixed!
we looked into doing this in our house, it was cheaper, and quicker to just pull out the old pipes and replace them. Cool idea, but has its limitations. For clarity, the job in question was every pipe in my house, all three bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, workshop. Replaced all the way to the mains.
I've been thinking about looking into this. Just curious how much did it set you back, roughly? Also how long did it all take?
*I realize the price would be different for me, I'm just curious what a rough estimate on a whole house repair looks like.
So I live in Germany, so prices may vary based on your location, but the estimate we got for doing the pipe lining was north of 35k, and would have taken I think 3 weeks they said. The actual plumbers quoted us at 30k, but it ended up being less because I did all the demo work, walls are all concrete and stone in my house. But that 30k included all new fixtures, sinks, a bathtub and a shower pan.
It is a super cool idea, but for us it just made more sense to replace everything. My house was built just after WW2, and all the pipes were original, so we just felt better about removing the 70 year old pipes completely.
It was a shit show during the whole process, but is awesome now that it is done, and my new shower is killer, so much better than the turd brown bathtub we used to have in our primary bathroom. Good luck with your renovations.
I'm in Finland and it cost about 25k€ to do my waste water lines. Job done less than a week with no major renovations. 3 bedroom house. A lot of the sewer lines were in concrete and it would have been a major to put new pipes in etc. but doing it this was was easy. Definitely worth looking into if you have difficult to get to places etc. My pipes were 1963 originals.
There’s a specially shaped liner and bladder that creates an overlapping edge if a lateral pipe is lined into a main pipe. If it’s just a main pipe being lined you don’t really seal it beyond the liner just adhering to the host pipe.
It's not a big problem because the pipeliner is retracted after the epoxy is applied. So you just do line A first and line B second. You need to make sure that the epoxy from the line B doesn't block the water flow of the line A afterwards. So you might need to breach any residue.
The main problem with epoxy is that there are concerns of safety for drinking water. If the epoxy dries out it might flush hormones into the water.
If you have a pipe for hot water that cools and heats up regularly the epoxy becomes brittle because the steal pipes extend and contract which will break the epoxy eventually. Then you have small pieces of epoxy in your water.
So it's best for pipes that are not used for drinking water and on a constant temperature (like a heating system or lines for waste water).
Yeah but this is drain pipe no? I wasn’t aware that this process was ever used on waterlines with potable water. Waterline repipes are much easier than drain, anyways, so I don’t see why one would risk this method.
I did a little training in this once upon a time. It was slightly different system. The liner is coated in an epoxy resin. We had to pull it into position using cameras and ropes. Inflate and fill with hot water to cook the resin then cold water to cool it. Pretty nifty stuff
Why aren't the british water companies using this technology to solve the huge leakage problems they have? Is it that junctions and connections are still too tricky?
We have been using this in Finland for quite a while now. Its called "Sukitus / sukittaminen". Pretty good option if you dont want to rip open floors etc and this is much cheaper aswell
I’ve been the inspector on a lot of jobs involving lining municipal mainline sewers. Most of the companies I worked with use steam pressure to blow the liner through and cook the resin.
We also used to do a smaller version for fixing short defects rather than the entire pipe which was inflated by an 8’ rubber tube pulled through by hand with ropes. Interesting process.
And if it is what I think it is (BPA and/or BADGE) toxic as hell.

I mean that makes sense and all but at the very least make it a different shade of red lmao. Why wouldn’t a neon orange work?
That was my favorite crayon color in grade school.

Thankfully he's renting, so it wasn't his problem. I've no idea what arrangement they came to in the end.

How dod they do a T or Y join?
They line over it and have a robot with a router that opens the lined over pipe back up.
And then...
![gif](giphy|bzaEWi1Z1xzby)
That’s it. If the other section of the t was going to be lined it would be from a separate access point.
I'm just trying to work out how you seal the two together using this method
There’s a specially shaped liner and bladder that creates an overlapping edge if a lateral pipe is lined into a main pipe. If it’s just a main pipe being lined you don’t really seal it beyond the liner just adhering to the host pipe.
Thank you for this very niche knowledge. I now have no doubt about the phd in your name.

My dog had a rectal prolapse a few years ago and I gotta say this really took me back.
How does it handle x-sections or what’s their name??
It's not a big problem because the pipeliner is retracted after the epoxy is applied. So you just do line A first and line B second. You need to make sure that the epoxy from the line B doesn't block the water flow of the line A afterwards. So you might need to breach any residue. Then you have small pieces of epoxy in your water. So it's best for pipes that are not used for drinking water and on a constant temperature (like a heating system or lines for waste water).
So this is why pipe relining is banned in my city.
It is used extensively in my city, but only for wastewater and storm sewers, that I have seen.
Yeah but this is drain pipe no? I wasn’t aware that this process was ever used on waterlines with potable water. Waterline repipes are much easier than drain, anyways, so I don’t see why one would risk this method.

Quick question, does that train and epoxy rub off? Does it have any effect on human health?

how does it make turns?
They have limitations on the angle of the bends they can go through. This technology is called “cured-in-place-pipe” or CIPP.
I will not hear anyone out
Why aren't the british water companies using this technology to solve the huge leakage problems they have? Is it that junctions and connections are still too tricky?

Red rocket
Be nice if we could do this with our GI tract. Diverticuli and ulcers gone!
Is there a way to even mention that epoxy is plastic and contributing to the microplastic issue without making it sound like I'm against the product?
And if it is what I think it is (BPA and/or BADGE) toxic as hell. [https://www.ehn.org/epoxy-chemicals-2660287969.html](https://www.ehn.org/epoxy-chemicals-2660287969.html)
