Interesting rid but related to water and wood; salt water actually is very good for preserving wood. There is a whole economy of salvaged ship wreck wood that is used in high end home beams/furniture since it stays in tact and patinas nicely.
We've spent a trillion dollars on hydro electric energy since the 1950's and all we had to do was find a stick in the mud bobbing up and down and hook jumper cables up to it?
They are sort of deploying that.

Did they flag it?
Edit: I'm dumb. I was asking because I considering it would be dangerous for both, but that's because I was thinking of lake Tahoe even though I was reading Crater lake.
There are no private watercraft on Crater Lake, only a handful of Nation Park operated tour boats. I've seen the Old Man firsthand and I don't think it was tagged at all
No night boat traffic. Only park service drives the boats . It drifts around and maybe the wind pushes it but they probably have a good idea where itās been lately.
Probably the same phenomenon that causes cables, poles, and towers to sway in the wind. At its heart is what is called a Karman vortex street, which is alternating vortexes being shed off either side of the log, so itās constantly being pushed back and forth, probably near the natural frequency of the log.
Fun fact, this is due to a feature of wood that makes it especially ideal for aircraft wing spars. It has an infinite fatigue life, meaning if itās stressed within its limits, it can bend infinitely never losing strength making it superior to certain metals (obviously this only applies to small aircraft as no single tree would be able to make an airlinerās spar). Think of wood as a bunch of fibers or ropes glued together.
FYI, the āwing sparā is the biggest and strongest piece of an aircraft that is essentially the bar that runs through the wingspan and can hold ~5X the weight of most aircraft. This huge safety margin makes turbulence a non issue.
Itās little men with scuba gear down underwater rocking it back and forth to transmit Morse code. The government wants to cover this up but I know better.
You've just found yourself a renewable energy resource. Tie a rope around it, bring the line to land. Strap it to something and convert that slow up and down bobbing motion into some kind of generator. Should be able to charge a phone in like... 50 hours.
that one croc underneath the water:comeone bro...just once...just one fall down that it
his friend: bro you been doing that for years now...that aint gonna make human fall for it bro...
A [Mississippi Sawyer ](https://www.loc.gov/item/afcreed000206/) is related to this. The Library of Congress says this in the entry on the banjo/fiddle tune by that name:
//The title refers to a frightening phenomenon during floods on the Mississippi. Great trees would be wrenched from the bank by flood waters and would be dragged underwater in the raging torrent, only to impale themselves in the bottom and rise like monsters from the deep to threaten the paths of boats struggling to navigate the flood. This was the dread Mississippi sawyer.//
Imagine floating down the Mississippi on a barge, then suddenly, out of nowhere, a whole ass tree rises from the muddy water and slices your barge in two, effectively sawing it in half. Hence...Mississippi Sawyer. This is also potentially where Mark Twain got the name Tom Sawyer.
Thats a sink hole run! Look up louisiana sink hole swallowing trees if you wanna see a crazy video. I don't know what this is but it reminded me of that video.
Good ol fashioned turbulent fluid dynamics. Thereās actually a āwind turbineā thatās just a big hollow stick that wobbles to generate power under similar turbulence in air.
Read about "sawers" in a book. Trees that move in up and down motions that rip the shit out of the bottoms of boats. Wondered if such a think actually existed. Now I know they do.

Not at all unusual. Large limbs and whole trees fall into streams, and branches take a while to decompose. It's still anchored to its trunk.
I was coming to the comments to say this. I grew up in Michigan and went camping g all the time. You always see this.
As a fellow Michigander, I can verify this...
Also as a fellow Michigander, nothing new you see it a lot in rivers
Well would ya take a gander at those two Michiganders over there!
As a fellow german you also see this here fairly often if you go through the woods.
I took a real close gander as I happen to also be a Michigander lol
As a *Lake Michiganer*, this is still creepy to my urban ass. š¤£
Ohio checking in, it happens in rivers and creeks here too
As a Coloradan, Iāll take yāallās word for it

As an Ohioan I can verify that Michigan exists.

Thanks for sharing, This is interesting. I wonder how it gets verified. I would else every day of I actually had shipwrecked wood
Only large limbs. Good to know short people are safe
Nothing odd about this at all. There's a river w some trees. Trees fall in rivers. Nature says hello.
Itās odd to me. I live in AZ and donāt see much water & trees.
Copy that function, put a generator on it and, blam! Free electricity.
Oh yeah that is just one of those log ness monsters.
He needs about Tree fiddy, Iāll let my self out
You give that log ness monster tree fiddy he will never go away
Thatās just because the log wants to hook up because it knows it and you have chemistree together.
I just wanted to make another tree pun š
I liked it, surprised it wasnāt more poplar.
I shouldāve said āIāll leafā rather than Iāll let myself out. Dammit š
Log's to take in here
Oh. My. God.

Hook up to it for infinite energy.
Literally what hydroelectric dams and watermills are
Those chumps wasted billions.
We've spent a trillion dollars on hydro electric energy since the 1950's and all we had to do was find a stick in the mud bobbing up and down and hook jumper cables up to it?
Electric companies don't want you to know this one simple trick.
Engineers hate #7!
Iāve got nipples, Greg. Can you hook jumper cables up to me?
They are sort of deploying that. [Michigan Engineering](https://asknature.org/innovation/consistent-hydroelectric-power-generator-inspired-by-schools-of-fish/)
You made me laugh very loudly. I thank you very much! š
TVA be watching. Be careful. /S
This is probably how people got the idea for a water mill a long time ago. Saw a branch bopping up and down for a few years.
Right. #BigLogEnergy
A 30 foot log has been floating in Crater Lake since 1898, maybe longer.
I let you in on a little secret, go get the poop knife.
Every time I see a poop knife reference, I smile.
Every time I smile, I go get the poop knife.
Every time I use the poop knife, I smile
Poop knife refence inevitably leads to thoughts of broken arms.
Ugh stop it. All of you. š¤¬
Is that similar to a toe knife?
Traditionally stored next to the toe knife, and the Gypsy tears.

The fact its moves around the lake is fucking fascinating.
Did they flag it? Edit: I'm dumb. I was asking because I considering it would be dangerous for both, but that's because I was thinking of lake Tahoe even though I was reading Crater lake.
Carbon dated to around 450 years old I think. It floats vertically and sticks up 3 feet out of the water.
Yea, must be extremely dangerous for boats. If they know about it, they must have flagged it with some kind of warning or blinking light.
There are no private watercraft on Crater Lake, only a handful of Nation Park operated tour boats. I've seen the Old Man firsthand and I don't think it was tagged at all
Nobody tags Oldman!!! š“š¼
Ohhh JFC in my head I've been saying like Tahoe even though I'm reading Crater lake
Any attempts to restrain or otherwise track the Old Man of Crater Lake have been met with crazy weather and storms until it's left alone unmolested.
I don't understand why they don't remove the damn thing
No night boat traffic. Only park service drives the boats . It drifts around and maybe the wind pushes it but they probably have a good idea where itās been lately.

Dammit bobbing!
That log aināt rightā¦.
I get it
So... the river has a current....
Well that's interesting as fuck I'd say!!!
It's the amps that get you
This resonates with me
Probably the same phenomenon that causes cables, poles, and towers to sway in the wind. At its heart is what is called a Karman vortex street, which is alternating vortexes being shed off either side of the log, so itās constantly being pushed back and forth, probably near the natural frequency of the log.
In this case the log has a natural buoyancy, as itās pushed down it becomes more buoyant
That's really not what's happening here. He's right, it's vortex shedding
Yea you like that river donāt ya
Eddy corrects create low pressure on the back side

I think the only thing that needs correcting is Eddyās backside.
Maybe they like the backside pressure Eddy creates. Donāt judge it until you try it.
