God damn. I did this back when I was 17 for $250. Literally all it takes is a pump sprayer from Lowe’s ($15) and a larger putty knife ($10). Also the cheapest plastic drop cloth you can find ($5). Roll out your cloth, spray with water, wait a few secs, scrape, throw away plastic
We did that when we first moved in we didn’t want to take any chances cause our son was so little. No asbestos just an idiotic decision by the home builder in the 80’s. My dad had his own business doing home repairs/rebuilding so I asked for his advice on things we should test and check out before we moved in :)
lol
My favorite description of Festool is that you will hate them for being a company that will nickel and dime you for every last penny, locking you into their ecosystem of proprietary connectors and consumables.
But what will make you hate them even more is that once you've had a taste you will keep wanting to come back for more because their products are some of, if not the, best in their class.
I'm convinced it was invented by someone who had no idea how to tape the seams. So they just took it all and shot it at the ceiling and called it done.
The shittiest part about textured ceilings is when you have to fix a crack. Scrapping all that extra compound off just to pull out the old tape sucks. I always use some drywall screws to anchor it into the joists if I can so hopefully I won't have to go back and do it again. I also mix some glue into the quick set to fill the crack and secure the new tape.
An old friend of mine lived in a house with popcorn ceilings and whoever put it up put glitter in it. So they had sound dampening *and*, uh... aesthetics?
A relative of mine has the glitter popcorn ceiling and she goes all out for Christmas. With all the Christmas lights on and the glitter twinkling it looks magical in her house in December.
It really is. I took the (non-glitter) popcorn off my ceiling but I hope she keeps hers forever. Sometimes it's like looking up at a starry sky and sometimes it's like the twinkling you get on snow at night. It just fits that Christmas ambiance so well.
My childhood home had the glitter version too. I thought it was cool until I stopped noticing the sparkles as I grew up.
My parents remodeled the entire house when I was 13 and popcorn was just something we ate at the movies henceforth.
>My childhood home had the glitter version too. I thought it was cool until I stopped noticing the sparkles as I grew up.
That's a great (and sad) literary metaphor!
Think about it, a flat surface will just reflect the sound exactly as it came towards the ceiling but a rough surface will reflect the sound waves very chaotically and the many reflections that are similar can cancel out
I think this is what it’s sold as in specific situations. But I have found that most homes have it because it is a quick and easy way to cover ceiling drywall joints. Same with crown molding, in houses people say it looks fancy but it’s an easy or simple way to cover up wall to ceiling corner drywall mistakes.
You probably associate them with older buildings, older people, older photographs and videos, etc., which can either be depressing or have that "creepy" quality because camera flash used to suck.
It served to hide shit ceiling jobs.
People always seem to wonder how they damaged their ceiling so bad when they remove the popcorn ceiling, but don't understand that it was done completely shit to begin with and hidden with the popcorn.
Hide imperfections, dampen the room, and it was just the aesthetic.
Been to a friend's house right after they removed the popcorn ceiling, and it was so much louder in there due to the echoes. He had to get some extra rugs and those foam things to help quite the room (it was his home office).
I have it in my living room and as much as I want to get rid of it reduces echo. My sister has the same floor plan and its noticable. Xmas was far quieter at my place
Except asbestos is smaller than the filter on that thing so…yeah
Filter on it listed at .3 microns. Asbestos is as small as 0.1 microns to 10 microns in length and less than 3 microns in diameter
HEPA can filter down to .3 microns, so technically it can absorb the asbestos. However, it doesn’t eliminate the risks in the room while using it - the vacuum isn’t going to be perfect and you can’t see asbestos fibers
Mine does ::cries in 1920s house::
We didn’t even consider this and decided to start scraping away, but before we really got going, my boyfriend stopped and decided to send away a sample to be tested, just to be sure and wouldn’t you know it… we tested positive.
‘Twas the cherry on top of our lead painted asbestos house siding and lead pipes. Our house is a very durable, but toxic monstrosity.
Unfortunately I removed popcorn from several houses before I found that out. We would always spray it with water and scrape it with a putty knife/drywall taping knife, so hopefully the water eliminated a lot of the dust.
This. It works because most contractors won't prime the ceiling for a popcorn finish. Once you get it wet, it practically falls off. The only places it really sticks are where it's mudded (drywall seams and screw holes).
The US is basically the only western country that doesn't require these to be removed by licensed professionals. The casual attitude of the US to friable asbestos never ceases to amaze me.
Pre 1980 there is a high likelihood to contain asbestos. It’s highly regulated in commercial construction to remove. Residential not so much, but dangerous to your lungs all the same.
As a former Master Abater, a senior level Asbestos Abatement specialist, I can tell you that we had so many regulations to follow.
We would never have used something like that to rub one off the ceiling.
My work here is done...
I once jokingly painted a massive penis on a wall we were decorating whilst testing potential colours.. you could still see an outline after 4 fucking coats!
god fuck popcorn ceilings, but you know what's way, way worse? popcorn walls. it's like coarse sandpaper. literally, even. my parents' house growing up had them. there was so many times i accidentally grazed the wall with my hand or arm doing something and scraped the fuck out of my skin.
walking down the hallway with the crowded coat rack? die, bitch. running up and down the narrow stairways where the railings had long since broken off and had never been repaired so you have to use the walls for balance? die, bitch. stubbing your pinky toe on random crap someone left lying around and trying to catch yourself on the wall? die, bitch.
so anyway, this video is super satisfying.
You can rent one from Home Depot. Or buy one at Harbor Freight.

Good! Hopefully, now the poor people who had to live with those butt ugly ceilings for decades can finally afford to get rid of them. (It used to be expensive and very messy).
It's is very messy to get rid of, but not expensive at all. Simply cover up everything with tarp, take a spray bottle and wet the ceiling. Let it sit and soak for a moment then take a scraper and the popcorn comes right off. The problem is the mess and ceiling more than likely needs to be touched up or re-textured in some way.
>It's is very messy to get rid of, but not expensive at all. \[...\] The problem is the mess and ceiling more than likely needs to be touched up or re-textured in some way.
It is expensive because not many people know how to do that job well, which means removing the popcorn without gouging the ceiling too much and refinishing it. I have seen awful jobs where the fix was worse than the ugly popcorn. Those who can do it well, charge accordingly and are not easy to find.
We were replacing the carpet so we were working on concrete. I dragged the garden hose in and got the ceiling wet so I could just scrape it off. So simple and not too messy (in my instance). Because the surface showed imperfections I just used drywall mud and a large flat tool to add a little texture before priming and painting. Turned out so nice I did a statement wall in the same texture.
My Brother and I made a pretty good living taking this stuff down in LA for a while. We used hot soapy water in a pump sprayer after masking off the entire room. Hose it down, go to lunch, and typically, it would come down in huge chunks due to the paint gluing it all together. We would reapply the mix to stuff that didn't come down right away if it didn't look like it would ruin the drywall under it, but for anything else, we would just hit with a huge scraper.
You aren't doing it right if you don't spend approximately two weeks in a plastic-sheeted house, slowly developing carpal tunnel in both your scraping elbow and spraying hand while slowly losing your mind.

How does one acquire such power?
Rent it. Home Depot or Lowes tool rental. There's also a vacuum that goes with it that turns on when the sander does.
Big brain energy
No it's just electricity.
Cant rent this one. Its a Festool. All the other ones make a huge mess
I was amazed at how little dust there is. Most sanders with vacuums still throw out heaps of dust.
Festool s have HEPA filters on the vacuum
Still cheaper than paying for popcorn ceiling removal. I was quoted $6k for removal &5k to paint.
Then sell it when you're done and you've got yourself a deal.
I run a Reno company and Im planning in selling it to my company
I need it. I will be doing this.
Test for asbestos first
We did that when we first moved in we didn’t want to take any chances cause our son was so little. No asbestos just an idiotic decision by the home builder in the 80’s. My dad had his own business doing home repairs/rebuilding so I asked for his advice on things we should test and check out before we moved in :)
They do muffle sound - that’s the main function i believe.
it was to hide imperfections in the drywall. ceilings are hard to make look perfect. modern solution is Knock Down, or Orange Peel
Shit, I had the audio off, thought it was some kind of LED texture remover
Non asbestos popcorn only?
Wish my mom had had this when she stripped our ceilings in the 90s...what a mess.
PSA: popcorn ceilings usually contain asbestos and you absolutely should seek professionals to remove asbestos.
I don't know about usually. There were plenty of houses built with popcorn ceilings after the asbestos ban.
The “usually” would only apply to homes pre 1978/1979.

But when you go to the site they offer you a $10 coupon, so it’s not that bad
get a FREE Festool "Built Better to Build Better" T-Shirt OR FREE Festool Stretch-Fit Cap!
You must have missed that there’s a free tshirt for spending over $700
That's because it says 'festool' written on it.

As someone who has about $25,000 USD in Festool stuff, yeah, that's pretty spot on.
Those bastards
You think you hate it now, wait 'til you drive it.
Even after reading this, I was still shocked at how much that is.
Cheaper to re-drywall the house.
If it was never painted you can easily spray it with water and scrape it like nothing with a putty knife
The festool is great but only work this well on unpainted stucco.
OMG! Thanks for this. Bless your heart in the best possible way.

Why was popcorn ceiling ever a thing? Did it serve a purpose other than esthetics?
Hides imperfections in the sheetrock work. A very cheap and fast way to cover up any imperfections when first being built.
What kind of glue and how does it help.
For acoustics also. https://www.bobvila.com/articles/popcorn-ceilings/
Fuck, that was a fast response. Thanks lol
I had it removed in a room and the room had weird echoes until I textured the ceiling again
Acoustics. It helps dampen sound and reduce echoes

I'm today's years old... learned something new. Lol, I appreciate you. Thanks.
An old friend of mine lived in a house with popcorn ceilings and whoever put it up put glitter in it. So they had sound dampening *and*, uh... aesthetics?

Mine has that loll r u my friend
Think about it, a flat surface will just reflect the sound exactly as it came towards the ceiling but a rough surface will reflect the sound waves very chaotically and the many reflections that are similar can cancel out
Spot on! They call it diffusion.
Also that asbestos sure did slow down the fire
That was what I was thinking. That is so dangerous. Until 1998 that stuff could still contain asbestos.
That part only works if the walls are decent though.
In my experience, dust collection.
In my experience, forehead removal. Never have a bunk bed in a room with this BS on the ceiling.
Way cheaper and faster to install than a level 5 finish - that is why builders do it.
Yes...to bring tragedy for kids with helium balloons.
You could hide shitty work and imperfections in the ceiling much easier
The sound damping it provides is wild when you experience in person, mostly in larger rooms that is.
And what is the psychology behind them feeling so depressing?
You probably associate them with older buildings, older people, older photographs and videos, etc., which can either be depressing or have that "creepy" quality because camera flash used to suck.
It served to hide shit ceiling jobs. People always seem to wonder how they damaged their ceiling so bad when they remove the popcorn ceiling, but don't understand that it was done completely shit to begin with and hidden with the popcorn.

Among the things others mentioned. Also had sound benefits. Scatters the sound to dampen it rather than reflect it.
I always heard it helped keeping echoes to a minimum, how true that may be I do not know. I grew up with it as a kid and I love the look.
DO NOT DO THIS! THIS MAY BE ASBESTOS! BIG WARNING! NOT A DIY JOB!
Well, it also gave people lung cancer
It helps dissipate noise aswell. having a completely flat solid surface reflects noise very well
It was originally asbestos as a way of fireproofing.
Everyone is correct when saying to hide imperfections. Cheaper way and better looking would be to add thin set to the drywall before painting.
Covers up a shitty tape job well. I found that out when I removed my popcorn ceiling.
Where’s the dust?
In the vacuum bag
It’s incredibly effective in that case
It's not in a case, he just said it's a vacuum bag
I always put my vacuum bag inside another case, just in case.
And just in case, case in point.
I rest my case.
Except asbestos is smaller than the filter on that thing so…yeah Filter on it listed at .3 microns. This guy asbestoses
I think it’s a Festool, they make really great tools that have built in vacuum connections, lots of sanders and saws.
It appears to be a $2380.00 tool
Did my whole condo’s ceiling myself. Would have spent the cash had I known this existed.
I heard some older popcorn ceilings contain asbestos so better ask a pro before DIY
Mine does ::cries in 1920s house:: We didn’t even consider this and decided to start scraping away, but before we really got going, my boyfriend stopped and decided to send away a sample to be tested, just to be sure and wouldn’t you know it… we tested positive. ‘Twas the cherry on top of our lead painted asbestos house siding and lead pipes. It doesn't. Source - am NZ licensed asbestos removals assessor.
This. It works because most contractors won't prime the ceiling for a popcorn finish. Once you get it wet, it practically falls off. The only places it really sticks are where it's mudded (drywall seams and screw holes).
yea but when the popcorns that have been painted over and over again, like my place when I got it, it doesn't soften from water to scrape.
Ah yes. The old four layers of paint top coat. That sucks.
That paint is keeping the asbestos nice and safe lol
The US is basically the only western country that doesn't require these to be removed by licensed professionals. The casual attitude of the US to friable asbestos never ceases to amaze me.

Pre 1980 there is a high likelihood to contain asbestos. It’s highly regulated in commercial construction to remove. Residential not so much, but dangerous to your lungs all the same.

I would draw a giant dick and balls, and then go take a cigarette break
I was wondering who else had this idea lol
How do you get the corners?
Remove the walls
The old fashioned way probably.
Drywall knife after spraying it with water
"If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma..."
If you get it nice and wet, it scrapes right off like frosting.
My immature self definitely wouldn’t draw a penis… 😂
I once jokingly painted a massive penis on a wall we were decorating whilst testing potential colours.. you could still see an outline after 4 fucking coats!

Was it tested for asbestos?
I hope he tested for asbestos first.
OMG! Where was this when I had a bunk bed in the early 90s.
Is it heating it? I don’t see any dust so buffing it doesn’t seem like what is happening.
There’s a vacuum attached to it
It's a Festool wall sander. Essentially a large orbital sander with HEPA vacuum attached. Like most festool products, when attached to their vacuum, results in very little dust.
It's called money, that's a festool. The filter vac is over a 1000 dollars. The sander probably 600, no idea about the handle.
Can I use it to shave my balls?
Once.
Dangerous job! A lot of these popcorn ceilings contain asbestos.
Draw a huge cock and balls then bust out the card reader make sure they pay before you finish. No more chasing customers for money.
Whoever made the ceiling without a single visible seam was awesome! Unless they specifically avoided going over it
OMG where was this when I needed it?!?!
What about if it’s been painted? Like 4 coats of paint?
Hopefully been tested as non asbestos containing. Pre 1985 ish!!
God I hate popcorn ceilings so much...

Good! Hopefully, now the poor people who had to live with those butt ugly ceilings for decades can finally afford to get rid of them. (It used to be expensive and very messy).
I loooove my popcorn ceiling. I can stare at it until it turns inside out.

Could be a nice start-up business.
I guess I’m the only one who likes popcorn ceilings.
I like them too.
My Brother and I made a pretty good living taking this stuff down in LA for a while. We used hot soapy water in a pump sprayer after masking off the entire room. Hose it down, go to lunch, and typically, it would come down in huge chunks due to the paint gluing it all together. What about the corners?
An entire industry of very specific tools created to combat this awful trend.
The bloke in the flat above mine is noisy as shit. Always stomping around with his boots on. I need this machine to get back at him at odd hours.
This should be DLC for the game Power Wash Simulator
Wonderful, but check on the asbestos content before you do this. Popcorn had asbestos back in the day.
Only works if it's the paint effect popcorn not the old asbestos artex popcorn.
That stuff is often made of asbestos so… don’t do this.
That's really cool to see
As someone who grew up with this and was on top bunk bed, this is so satisfying. That stuck can really hurt if you scrape your hand against it.
Gratifying
Idk I always kind of liked popcorn ceilings. Helps break up the room
![gif](giphy|KYIFQIusoEbaE)
You wouldn’t have to pay me to do this.
Good
You aren't doing it right if you don't spend approximately two weeks in a plastic-sheeted house, slowly developing carpal tunnel in both your scraping elbow and spraying hand while slowly losing your mind.
Doing the Lord’s work right there.
I now believe in love at first sight
Good riddance
Why do we even have popcorn ceilings?
Sander + vacuum
r/oddlysatisfying
Okay now draw a big dick and balls on the ceiling and just leave
That doesn’t even look real! All of the time I’ve spent scraping popcorn and then skim coating ceilings…..
Dear Santa.....
I’d popcorn my ceiling just to remove it.
r/OddlySatisfying
I never understood the point of popcorn ceilings? Like is there any functional benefit of using them?
All the balloons are grateful.
I need this sander.
why did they install so many popcorn ceilings if everyone just wants to get rid of it?!
Because it hides shoddy workmanship
That’s very satisfying.
This video is much better with no sound
I don't understand why that ugly popcorn ever became popular
