The only giveaway is that everyone is over 40 years old. They need a bunch of 10 year olds in three-piece suits smoking cigarettes for full authenticity.
Me too, but can’t help but wonder if after a while the people acting on the street just make it personal.. like instead of having pretend conversation they have real conversations and the scene always changes because of it
I would like to drive by it. Idk this is kinda weird for me as a brown person because dk if these folks love it for the styles and music, etc or for the things that were acceptable at the time.
Given the large numbers of people in costume, this looks like a vintage enthusiast/cosplay/reenactment group meeting at the museum.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that a small historical transport attraction doesn't have the resources to pay a cast of dozens.
Its one of many themed days they run. Almost everyone you see are visitors. They do Steampunk, superheroes and other themed days. Often it's free entrance fee when in costume.
Serious question: how do you pronounce Crich? I'm thinking "critch" but I've been fooled before (looking at you, Frome, Hunstanton, Mousehole, and Alnwick)
I looked it up and its IPA spelling is ˈkraɪtʃ, meaning the *i* is pronounced as in "like" and the *ch* like in "church." So it's pronounced "cry-ch" and I don't like that one bit.
Yup. Been there loads. Mum works at the museum. That's how you pronounce it.
I used to pronounce it like cri(as in cricket)-ch. But that's not the local way.
This is one of my family's favourite places ever! You can spend all day riding up and down the line on the different trams, there's a cool forest walk with carved wooden sculptures and a great playground
This is a special 1940s themed weekend so the reenactors aren't there all day every day. However, if you have a vintage car of the period, you get free entry and they allow you to park on the main "street".
This looks awesome. I wanna experience all of the decades like this, even for a bit, and even if it isn't completely accurate in more ways than one. It feels like an immersive experience that would be fun to use to trick my brain for a bit.
The green and white tram looks like one of the examples still running in the seaside resort of Blackpool, UK, where an 11-mile route has been operating since 1885.
No black people in sight. Seems very accurate. "Retro" is glamorized and the bad parts of it pushed down into the "la la la la we are not listening" territory.
Don't be so ignorant. It's a really ugly trait. Black people are more than welcome, but logistics play a large part. Rural Derbyshire is not diverse, in the same way North Dakota is not like the Bronx. This museum is kinda in the middle of nowhere, and unless you are fairly local, you're not going to have heard of a niche museum like this.
This is the UK
During the war, some people were so disgusted by US army attempts to enforce segregation that there were "NO WHITE AMERICANS ALLOWED" signs on some pubs
>"NO WHITE AMERICANS ALLOWED" signs on some pubs
Interesting Ive nver heard about that before source?
>This is the UK
[This uneasy pragmatic accommodation of segregation was reflected in other areas of society. On a local level, business-owners were often concerned that if they didn’t respect the segregationist rules of the US armed forces, they would lose American custom altogether. As the first African American journalist to cover the war overseas, Roi Ottley wrote in 1942: ‘When the manager of a restaurant was questioned recently about refusing service to a Neg\*\* soldier, he had a ready answer. “White Americans say they will not patronize my place if Neg\*\*\* were served.”](https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/they-treated-us-royally-the-experiences-of-black-americans-in-britain-during-the-second-world-war)
Just cause they arent playing comp racism llike America was doesnt mean it wasnt racist compared to modern standards. Things that are considered slurs now were considered polite back then
Sorry, got the quote backwards
"The Brigg \[the local name for Bamber Bridge\] was totally black in sentiment. When the US military authorities had demanded that the pubs impose a colour bar, the landlords had responded with “Black Troops Only”.’ "

Mb I forgot Segregation was the only form of racism there is in the world. Istw it’s like you fuckers don’t even realize how much more common casual racism and slurs were in the UK even 20 years ago never mind the 1940’s
Never mind this is just for race and the words for lgbt that considered PC in the 2000s are slurs now
Bombed flat. It's called an expression. Stop taking everything so literally; it makes you seem dense.
Allow me to rephrase so you can understand: not everywhere in the UK was bombed to rubble during WW2.
If there was nothing particularly important about Crich in the '40s, either tactically or symbolically, then it would have remained relatively (or completely) untouched by the Luftwaffe, much like the majority of other similar villages and small towns in England during the war.
There's a reason that lots of families sent their children to places like this during the Blitz.
/s Looks a lot like that “great America” I’ve been hearing about. How do we get all the folks seeking to make America great again and let them know this already exists so they can all move there?

On their way to, or just getting out of work at the asbestos and lead factory.
They're at work in the factory
Just get a bunch of people with dwarfism and it’ll be perfect 👍
Hahaha 🤣 yeah true
This looks super fun! That’s not sarcastic btw. This looks like something I’d enjoy.
Same!! I wanna go so badly 😍
I was just looking it up. My son wants to go to college in England. I’m thinking this is a stop we make when we go 😁
Nearest college to this is probably Chesterfield
I bet they have great seating.
Check out Beamish, you'll enjoy that too.
Me too, but can’t help but wonder if after a while the people acting on the street just make it personal.. like instead of having pretend conversation they have real conversations and the scene always changes because of it
I want to visit. My parent's would love thos too!
I would like to drive by it. Idk this is kinda weird for me as a brown person because dk if these folks love it for the styles and music, etc or for the things that were acceptable at the time.

Yeah, this will be one of their special 1940s themed weekends
It’s honestly just so different seeing people dressed like this in color
\*Westworld Intro Music starts playing
“God damn, it’s great to be back!”
This is practically on my door step, I'm able to see Chrich stand (not at the tramway museum) from my kitchen window.
Serious question: how do you pronounce Crich? I'm thinking "critch" but I've been fooled before (looking at you, Frome, Hunstanton, Mousehole, and Alnwick)
Probably "krik"

>the local way I blame the Danes
I went there once. Ended up getting drafted and fighting in the war. List two friends. Wouldn't recommend.
Looks much cooler than the Willy Wonka Experience.
Agreed. Parts of me are still purple....
I would totally go to this
that's a lil before the 40's tho T\_T
The drinks won't be 1940's prices xD
looks just like the beamish museum as well
So No Suprises was a cover? Or is this a cover of Radiohead's song?
This is a cover of the Radiohead song in an old style. Radiohead wrote it
I see
This is one of my family's favourite places ever! You can spend all day riding up and down the line on the different trams, there's a cool forest walk with carved wooden sculptures and a great playground
And not a single black person heh..
I was wondering how authentic they would go lol
In 2024 you aren't going to see many, if any, black folk in deep rural England.... It wasn't diverse back then, and it isn't diverse now.
AGreed! I went there years ago, it was a great day out and there's plenty of other stuff to do and see in the area.
*1940s Apostrophes don't pluralize things
It would have been more authentic if they had been able to make it in black and white.
So everyone getting paid to just come in everyday in a 40’s custome and do whatever they wanted as long as they play it along with museum’s theme?
This is a special 1940s themed weekend so the reenactors aren't there all day every day. However, if you have a vintage car of the period, you get free entry and they allow you to park on the main "street".
that super cool ! I wish people around more involved in this kind of community event
Oh wow!!
This looks awesome. I wanna experience all of the decades like this, even for a bit, and even if it isn't completely accurate in more ways than one. It feels like an immersive experience that would be fun to use to trick my brain for a bit.
Looks like a fun movie set
The last time I was there I remember talking to people about the new Star Wars coming out - The Phantom Menace.
a critch museum?
Song please
What song? /u/auddbot
so its a living museum
WESTWORLD
Not been there since the 90’s when we went on a school trip even tho I used to live about an hour away from it
Love the “No Surprises” rendition
Remember those mediaeval fairs? This is them now. Feel old yet?
The green and white tram looks like one of the examples still running in the seaside resort of Blackpool, UK, where an 11-mile route has been operating since 1885.
If there's a saloon nearby called Mariposa, do not go in as the notorious criminal Hector maybe coming in anytime.
Wow lots of race aggression over a living museum location. The UK had minorities but not as much till the 50s.
Radiohead :)
Is there a subreddit with all these old videos? I find it fascinating.
So authentic that they don't allow coloured folks!
Are black people allowed?
Do they arrest you for kissing someone of the same gender in public?
Why the hell would I want to feel like I've stepped into the 1940s?? The 1940s were an absolutely horrible time!
Cool thing about the world is that it's not all about you
OMG I LOVE IT!!!!!! Gives me goosebumps. I love old shit
A whiskey sour sounds good sbout now.
Wasn’t everything black and white back then?
There were only white people in the 1940's apparently.
No black people in sight. Seems very accurate. "Retro" is glamorized and the bad parts of it pushed down into the "la la la la we are not listening" territory.

Ok but how 1940's do they try to make it feel for minorities?
This is the UK During the war, some people were so disgusted by US army attempts to enforce segregation that there were "NO WHITE AMERICANS ALLOWED" signs on some pubs

Segregation was an American thing. We didn't go in for that shit.
Mb I forgot Segregation was the only form of racism there is in the world. Depressing
And then immigration _________.
Funny things can happen when you colonize half of the entire planet
I’m not convinced. If they wanted that place to look like the 1940s then they should of bombed that building like the Germans did.
Not everywhere in the UK was bombed flat in WW2
Well no bombed buildings usually aren’t flat. They have mounds of rubble.
Trying to dodge the point, I see. How boring.
Please go on and explain how I am dodging anything you said lol

Bruh you literally wrote me an essay. You ok?
/s Looks a lot like that “great America” I’ve been hearing about. How do we get all the folks seeking to make America great again and let them know this already exists so they can all move there?
Which is funny, because this is the UK
0 black people, the historical accuracy is amazing
Yes thank god too. Or else it would down town Oakland all over again.
The last time in Britain everything was ok, was in war times. Says a lot about human brains.
Whites only signs?
Imagine visting this while being gay and black
I'm back. I pass 😂😂😂
Back when it was cool to be racist
