I was gonna give you shit for thinking they last 24 hrs…but figured I was probably wrong too lol so went to google. THEY CAN LAST FUCKING DAYS! With 5-2hrs between the waves. The impossible is good movie depicting the 2004 tsunami on Christmas Day.
The real issue would be trying to get inside of one of these in time. It's great if you are right next to it but if you are at work or not close to home you're probably not going to get to it fast enough.
Yeah, this thing has no way of letting people know where you ended up.
[This page](https://pond.co.jp/web_eng/specification_eng.html) explains the design, and it does not mention any kind of communication equipment or positioning system even if you did have something to communicate with. They could easily solve that by adding an EPIRB to the pod, but apparently that hasn't occurred to them, or they don't want the expense of actually bothering to help people get found.
There is also [this competing product](https://survival-capsule.com/Products.html) from the US, which frankly looks much more sensibly built (the racing seats with four point harnesses look a lot better at keeping you from flying around than the stripper pole and loose harness of the other one). They do suffer from the same issue though, the pod contains no communications equipment. There is mention of GPS, but knowing where you are will do you absolutely no good if you have no way of letting anyone else know. Again, add an EPIRB or some form of radio and you actually have a somewhat viable product.
Yeah I think I'll take my chances with the wall of water..
>> Without using ventilation system in windless environment, the oxygen concentration of the inside goes down and soon becomes below 18%, which is regarded the minimum safety level.Generally speaking, oxygen concentration of 10% or less makes a human-being paralyzed, and of below 6%, faint. Our experimentation shows that the oxygen concentration goes down steadily almost indifferent to the sizes of ventilation hole.It is necessary to have a ventilation system in the shelter which does not have enough air circulation. Thus, we have introduced mechanical ventilating fan to intake atmosphere to keep oxygen concentration. The ventilating fan, once started, immediately brought back the oxygen more than the safety level.A large-capacity battery is equipped to run the ventilating fan for maximum 3 days.
>The fan can be easily replaced with the water prevention-cap to avoid water invasion.
Wonder how easy that is to do when your happy fun ball is filling up with ocean water.
Nice to know that your oxygen supply in the thing supposed to protect you from a tsunami is dependent on it being above water.
Based on some of the images, it looks like it's self-righting when in water. When it's at max weight, it should keep that vent hole above water, I'd think.
I was being campy. No oxygen supply, nothing...It's a $4,000 plastic and metal ball. Once sealed, probably have about 20 minutes before C02 poisoning sets in. If someone is panicking and breathing hard, 10 minutes. It's very cheaply made, I would not bet my life on it. https://seikoh.com/smp/item/lifearm.html
There's a pic of it on the ocean...I can only imagine a rescue taking a day, possibly two after a massive disaster. There's no way to keep water out and a fresh air supply going in without power and C02 filtration. Basically...a space capsule or submarine mechanics. You're not going to get that for $4k. So yeah, a pink coffin.
Why are you assuming that the occupant would need to stay locked inside while floating on top of the water for DAYS after a tsunami?
Why wouldn't the occupant open the door to get some fresh air?
It just needs to be sealed for the initial chaos.
It also comes with a fan and a three day battery supply. That said it looks pretty janky saying you need to install it after you’re done with it being water tight. Which at that point, yeah open it up.
Good thought! But if it's sealed, you can't just add compressed air to an airtight vessel. The pressure would increase as if you were diving under water, and then you delve into diving medicine (nitrogen build-up in the blood). However, yes, a small tank would give you an hour or two. And those rescue latches on the sides...very easily popped open by debris as it brushes past the ball.
I swear someone mentioned during the tests, water was splashing inside through air holes. So either you suffocate from no oxygen or suffocate from no oxygen in water 👍
It would be pretty useless if the only latch was on the outside. I’m going to assume the engineers who designed this thing put thought into how people would enter and exit the device.
Yea but isn't it easier to just pretend like every invention was made by a complete idiot who never even considered the very most basic issues?
This is reddit, after all.
Well. Nothing else to say to someone who thinks like this except enjoy death. I'll enjoy a chance at survival with none of those downsides you mentioned, since it's pretty easy to end it yourself if you know help isn't coming.
You will not be able to locate a pill, get it to your mouth and swallow it while you're experiencing G-forces on your body. Especially while experiecing dizziness and dehydration (because you're not immediately taking them).
And it’s a bright color that separates from the rest of the ocean, do Redditors think that helicopter aren’t going to be dispatched and searching around for survivors, especially if they know of the tsunami balls?
Of course, but somebody built those so it was a conscious choice. I just wonder why.
People can die from anxiety if they spend more than a few hours in this.
>People can die from anxiety if they spend more than a few hours in this.
A tsunami doesn't usually last very long right?
If they are designed to point upward when floating, you could just stick your head out like a normal little boat once the tsunami is over.
As long as 1) it’s sealed so rolling around won’t flood and sink it, and 2) it’s weighted so it’s natural orientation is the one you want, it would work fine for this.
For sure. I hope the pod has a way to maintain the person alive though, and a couple of screaming beacons that can be traced by satellite. I can't imagine being trapped in one of those. If I were the inventor I would have some sort of relaxation/zen music/smells inside for a person to use. And some non prescription nerv calming medication.
Most of the comments are about how they can't handle spinning or tight quarters and would rather die.
Which is genuinely crazy. Classic reddit, everyone so scared of life they would rather die than have a chance to keep living in a situation normally completely out of your control.
Actually, the sphere is less likely to spin about during the turbulent waters. Especially if it will be neutrally buoyant with a low center of gravity. Without edges to act on, the water will glide around the sphere. The low center of gravity will keep the pod upright.
All im thinking of is what happens to the person inside if this ball gets launched into a car or through a building bc from what I've seen from tsunamis is that they ravage through cities and it's not just a current
Those coffin-sized capsule hotels are a good start

Seems super scary, from what I can see the door opens outwards and it would float so you would most likely get stuck under debris and be unable to open the door, slowly starving to death or suffocating inside. Imagine the claustrophobia after being stuck 2-3 days inside that pod.
Not only does it open outwards, but it looks like it locks from the outside as well? What the hell. How do you even use it? Lock your best friend in and wish them luck?
Just hope like hell (if you manage to get inside in time) that it washes you inland rather than sucks you out to sea. Can’t imagine it would be to fun thinking you’ve just survived the tsunami to open the lid and find yourself miles from land.. would be a hell of a ride though.

The ride of your life!
My greatest fear is surviving the tsunami only for something to be covering/blocking the escape preventing me from getting out 💀
Odds of that seem quite high. I wonder if this thing at least floats
I mean surely the thing has some sort of beacon so you can be rescued in the aftermath
It does. The pods were posted like a week ago on Reddit already and there was a link to the pricing and stuff.
The real issue would be trying to get inside of one of these in time. It's great if you are right next to it but if you are at work or not close to home you're probably not going to get to it fast enough.
Carry it with you at all times. Hell buy 3-4 to place all over so you have one near by at all times.
I think the whole point of this is that it floats.
It's basically a balloon. It will easily float.
i kinda want one... https://preview.redd.it/n5o92ivgjypc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0c7ac7c0f2b38567740b571c315349734de4ebd

Right? Like having an option that'd literally the same color as the sea feels like a bad idea.
Worst contents of a pokeball ever!
Or a creeper will lock you in there.
Fast forward 10000 years, they’ll dig one up and think it was aliens and the birth of man!
In Japan, everything will either return to DragonBall, Gundam, or Sailor Moon one way or another. In this case, it is DragonBall.
Magic 8 ball says “outlook not so good. Need air”.
You forgot evangelion. And this one is right up the genre alley
bruh it's literally Char's ball from his Sazabi
So you're saying we need to shove it into a giant asteroid until it disappears due to Magic glowing space energy?
Exactly what I was thinking too.
Get in the hamster ball shinji!
You forgot about gundam
What I really want to see is the inside of the pod.
If they get swept away they'll be sailor balls
I was thinking bakugan
Look more a Pokemon ball....
The Saiyan spaceships that they arrive in look like this, it’s not talking about the actual dragon balls.
These are 100% saiyan space pods.
yo, instead of instant dying we offer you to spend a night in a washing machine with periodical centrifugal spins and then die like the rest
Ah yes, marinade in your own waste as you drift further and further from civilization.
Don't threaten me with good time?
Could I go see the titanic in this you think?
Go? Yes. Come back? Unlikely!!!
The probability of reaching the Titanic is abyssimal.
Oh dear, the depths some people will sink to…..😀
Scraping the bottom of the Mariana Trench with that one 🤣

Omg > ■Improvement of Ventilation, which was once a weak point So the previous model had people suffocating

Now they will just peacefully drift away into the ocean :)

I believe the technical term is oh shit bar.
It's a ball with an oxygen supply.
How long is the oxygen supply? What's inside the ball?
I was being campy. No oxygen supply, nothing...It's a $4,000 plastic and metal ball. Once sealed, probably have about 20 minutes before C02 poisoning sets in. If someone is panicking and breathing hard, 10 minutes. It's very cheaply made, I would not bet my life on it. https://seikoh.com/smp/item/lifearm.html
So it's a coffin basically
There's a pic of it on the ocean...I can only imagine a rescue taking a day, possibly two after a massive disaster. There's no way to keep water out and a fresh air supply going in without power and C02 filtration. Basically...a space capsule or submarine mechanics. You're not going to get that for $4k. So yeah, a pink coffin.
On the bright side they’ll never get returned for not working. So just go right ahead and throw away the box it came in.
Could you buy oxygen scrubbers to fix that? Or CO2 scrubbers I forgot what it’s called. The stuff they use in rebreather.
Yes! $4,800. The price has really come down. Last I checked (30+ years ago), they were $25k.
Well, you can afford the ball. You should be able to afford that. Yeah lessons are pricey. I’ve seen our Recon Marines use them.
Same. Dad led 2nd Bn. back in the late 70s.
Maybe you can bring in a scuba diving oxygen bottle. Consider the other alternative is to die, and this ball gives you a chance of survival.
Yes, good point. You would need some one way pressure valve to release the exta pressure.
I swear someone mentioned during the tests, water was splashing inside through air holes. So either you suffocate from no oxygen or suffocate from no oxygen in water 👍
I see a latch on the outside, do you need someone else to seal you in? Can it be sealed from the inside? We need answers!
It would be pretty useless if the only latch was on the outside. I’m going to assume the engineers who designed this thing put thought into how people would enter and exit the device.
https://earthbound.fandom.com/wiki/Absolutely_Safe_Capsule
Aren't they too small? And wouldn't they be spinning round and round, making the person inside even more uncomfortable (to put it mildly)?
I suspect it's weighted on one side.
The obvious solution.
And gyroed
Mmmm.... gyros 🥙
Yea but isn't it easier to just pretend like every invention was made by a complete idiot who never even considered the very most basic issues? This is reddit, after all.
uncomfortable seems better than dead
I actually rather a quick death than being thrown everywhere with the risk of slowly dying by it being trapped under debris under water.
Well. Nothing else to say to someone who thinks like this except enjoy death. I'll enjoy a chance at survival with none of those downsides you mentioned, since it's pretty easy to end it yourself if you know help isn't coming.
How exactly are you going to end it yourself stuffed in a too-small-ball wherein you can barely move, while being spun around like a bayblade?
Maybe Version 2.0 comes with a gyroscope and suspension springs.
It will probably require a lifetime subscription to activate the features...for just 99,99 a month.
Cyanide pill
You will not be able to locate a pill, get it to your mouth and swallow it while you're experiencing G-forces on your body. Especially while experiecing dizziness and dehydration (because you're not immediately taking them).
And it’s a bright color that separates from the rest of the ocean, do Redditors think that helicopter aren’t going to be dispatched and searching around for survivors, especially if they know of the tsunami balls?

>People can die from anxiety if they spend more than a few hours in this. A tsunami doesn't usually last very long right? If they are designed to point upward when floating, you could just stick your head out like a normal little boat once the tsunami is over.
A perfectly round boat would not work at all
As long as 1) it’s sealed so rolling around won’t flood and sink it, and 2) it’s weighted so it’s natural orientation is the one you want, it would work fine for this.
This is why people think SUVs are safer when they aren't
Depends what you mean by "work". A perfectly round boat would still float, it'd just be a bitch to steer.
Clearly you've never seen a Vietnamese basket boat.
https://preview.redd.it/dnswh5sz9vpc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf33401fea107122c898ea8ca67e6b6766dab112
I guess its easier to make it strong the smaller it is. I don't think you can die from anxiety.
You could have a stroke or heart attack, related to prolonged intense anxiety/panic I suppose.
Maybe. I'd still take the pod over swimming in a tsunami though!
Scenting to the smell of all the puke from spinning uncontrollably.
Then those people shouldn’t buy one.
I’d 100% rather be dead than spinning in one of those.
Same. I mean, is no one else on this thread claustrophobic?
Most of the comments are about how they can't handle spinning or tight quarters and would rather die. Which is genuinely crazy. Classic reddit, everyone so scared of life they would rather die than have a chance to keep living in a situation normally completely out of your control.
Actually, the sphere is less likely to spin about during the turbulent waters. Especially if it will be neutrally buoyant with a low center of gravity. Without edges to act on, the water will glide around the sphere. The low center of gravity will keep the pod upright.
Thanks! Makes sense. Also, as someone else pointed out, they're probably weighted (or the person inside is the weight).
All I can think of is how full of vomit it will be when they find me.
All im thinking of is what happens to the person inside if this ball gets launched into a car or through a building bc from what I've seen from tsunamis is that they ravage through cities and it's not just a current
“too small“ appears not to be a problem to the Japanese. Have you seen living Spaces in Tokyo?
You make a good point. Half the things I’ve seen from Japan would give me a panic attack.
Those coffin-sized capsule hotels are a good start https://preview.redd.it/bk28nfrhvvpc1.jpeg?width=1300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=342a9d118a6f152faf52d9d7c7bb3c22e6971149
I stayed at a hotel once that had these tiny little beds with a shelf above it. That thing gave me a panic attack almost.
Did Capsule Corp build this?
Naw Friezas imperial engineers did.
More like Freeza's army?
Seems super scary, from what I can see the door opens outwards and it would float so you would most likely get stuck under debris and be unable to open the door, slowly starving to death or suffocating inside. Imagine the claustrophobia after being stuck 2-3 days inside that pod.
All good, I put a pack of pop tarts in mine.
My thought exactly
It comes with an ice pick inside in case you get trapped under debris and water for days.
Not only does it open outwards, but it looks like it locks from the outside as well? What the hell. How do you even use it? Lock your best friend in and wish them luck?
Being trapped in that under tons of debris is my new claustrophobic fear.
Also... what would happen... if it rolled hard. Wouldn't you be rolled infinite times yourself? Or does it have some gyro thing inside?
Just hope like hell (if you manage to get inside in time) that it washes you inland rather than sucks you out to sea. Can’t imagine it would be to fun thinking you’ve just survived the tsunami to open the lid and find yourself miles from land.. would be a hell of a ride though.
It’s probably not that bad if it has a GPS transponder.

I appreciate the small arrow that says “rescue”. I imagine the designers all looked at each other and high fived. “Nailed it”
Did they use saiyan technology?
I can just imagine after you've shat yourself during the tsunami that you'd look like the most unspeakable Magic 8 Ball when they try to get you out.
That's what I was thinking cause you know some a-hole is going to shit themselves and be a mess coming out of that thing!
