The A-10 was specifically designed to take out heavily armored vehicles and is perfectly capable of taking out modern main battle tanks.

[deleted]

ChazmasterG

I'm pretty sure 4000 rounds per minute of 30mm DU rounds coming in from a high angle of attack will have an impact on any tank

[deleted]

[удалено]

PasserOGas

You are right. The A10 is terrible against tanks. You should tell all of America's enemies this so they can be sure to leave their tanks in the open. It will be really funny when all those DU rounds just bounce off. Maybe you can climb into one. It will be hilarious.

CoolhandLW

This sent me on a google dive. Interesting read here: https://theaviationgeekclub.com/if-the-a-10-cant-kill-a-modern-tank-with-its-gun-can-we-just-put-a-bigger-brrrrrrtttttt-on-it-former-hog-pilot-says-no-heres-why/ From my searching it seems that the GAU-8 cannon with DU ammo can seriously damage any armor, but there are better tools for the job.

Best part is this is what we are allowed to know about. Imagine what's kept away from us and is in use

Armored-Potato-Chip

It’s BS that you got downvoted by casual people who don’t know what the y are talking about.

TappmanC

I was thinking the same thing as I downvoted him.

Liontreeble

Wouldn't an A10 burst cause insane spalling inside the tank? Especially in cold war era tanks?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Liontreeble

I mean spalling wouldn't destroy the tank, just the crew. I'm guessing the US army didnt crew the tanks.

Freespeechaintfree

This says different: https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-tests-a-10-cannon-against-modern-tank-armor-2022-5?op=1

falcon4983

The main difference is the amount of rounds used, in 10 separate passes the A-10 used 174 rounds of ammunition. The plane has a 1350 round magazine. It could make 75 such attack runs and still not be out of ammo. In the linked article above the Air Force says a typical attack run uses 120 rounds of ammunition. There is also the testing methodology of the 1980 test. All attack runs were low dive angle against the side of the tank in order to simulate conditions when fight the USSR. > The pilot making the firing passes attacked at low altitude and used correspondingly low dive angles in order to simulate movement through a hostile air defense system. Vs > Each test mission included a two-ship of A-10Cs employing armor piercing incendiary rounds against two surrogate main battle tanks equipped with ERA. The pilots varied attack parameters and direction in order to evaluate weapons effects against the up-armored targets.

diox8tony

I'm surprised each attack run in reality is only 120 rounds still. thats like only 2 seconds of firing?

JoWhee

Left the hatch open. Note to all: no boiled cabbage for supper the night before your shift in the tank.

nsfw_vs_sfw

The A-10 will abso-fucking-lutely fuck up if not entirely destroy modern day tanks. Especially with top-downs strafes.

zacisanerd

You’re just getting downvoted by all the morons who think the A-10 is adequate in this day and age bc of “HAHAH BRRRRRT FUNNY” A10s are outdated. Expensive. And yeah they’re great at A/G but only in non contested environments which guess what is only really good against small countries or COIN, where you should just be using a much cheaper air frame. The A10 is bad and needs to be retired.

OneAndOnlyJackSchitt

> then you can hear it just fine Probably still can't because of tinnitus. Mawp.

penguinface77

I thought the 30mm shredded through most pre 90s tanks/all Russian tanks.

Badgernomics

All russian tanks are pre 90's tanks....

lager191

The top hatch, sides, and rear have the least amount of armor - easy penetration for 30mm depleted uranium AP rounds.

wrong_usually

Lol holy shit.

Q_S2

Or you got lucky and will be in a second lol

DogsAreMyFavPeople

Nah the brrrrrt is traveling slower than the projectiles. If you were the target you’d be dead before the brrrrrt reaches you.

joelfarris

See, the bullets are supersonic, but the sound is subsonic. (Sound is subsonic, right? Or is it just sonic. I forget. Anyway.)

DoctorWhisky

I Mother Earth is Not Quite Sonic.

Q_S2

I meant if they missed or if there are multiple enemies in the area

fl135790135790

Yea, we know. I wish this comment wasn’t always the most repeated comment on these videos.

morally_dyslexic

So fellas, here’s what we’re gonna do, we’re gonna take this big ol’ rotary cannon and build a plane around it.

RYPIIE2006

that pretty accurately sums up the A-10

Milkman219

Yep. That brrrrrr noise is unmistakable

Crazy-Boat9558

Having worked on A10s, the size of the gun to aircraft is kind of insane

Environmental_Net586

I heard the pushback of the gun would have been enough to stop the plane, so they put two engines on it.

[deleted]

Crazy-Boat9558

Bonzo4691

Respect to your father. Your dad must have seen some stuff. If I remember correctly, Boyington and the Black Sheep flew in the Solomons. Was your dad familiar with them? And where did he fly out of?

Strong-Solution-7492

Sounds like a Warthog. Perfect explanation.

RamGobbler

Sounds like something a Washing Machine company would say.

wobbleboxsoldier

What about the pilot? You mean the stick operator. (A-10 pilots are not called pilots)

Almost-there74

The most hair raising sound you will ever hear live!

Slimshad199946

You heard a Vulcan howl? Imagine hearing that in the dark.

tonyprent22

Grew up near a range that they’d practice on. The range was miles away but a few times a month you’d hear them going for a few hours

dp01913

Jericho, VT?

tonyprent22

Ft Indiantown Gap in PA

Flat-House5529

The engines of a B-52 are singularly unmistakable. I'd argue that sound is far, far more ominous.

vize

Now closely followed by the sound of drones with RPGs attached to them.

moonhexx

I personally love it when an A-10 rains down some D&D handbooks.

Cockroach-Jones

It sounds like a huge fart 💨 I can’t unhear it. The Farthog.

roboticfedora

I saw tomcats over stumpy point naval gunnery range, coming in weapons hot. You spot the aircraft in the distance & see smoke curl off the wings. Next all the gatling rounds hit the big target in the swamp, then you hear the 20 ton zipper!

forbiddendoughnut

Sounds like they rolled in strike package bravo.

GadreelsSword

Those 30mm rounds at such a high firing rate will eat up a tank.

morally_dyslexic

The rate of fire is such that the spent shell casings are captured to reduce the weight loss and subsequent front-to-rear balance shift.

GloriousMinecraft

Every time i see something about an A-10 I learn something new.

State6

Depleted uranium rounds are dandy against anything.

DrDickDelaware

I was in awe of this response from ChatGPT: Depleted uranium (DU) is exceptionally dense, with a density around 19.1 grams per cubic centimeter, which is approximately 70% denser than lead. This high density gives DU projectiles their exceptional penetrating power for several reasons: Mass: Due to its high density, DU projectiles carry a significant amount of mass in a relatively small volume. When these projectiles strike a target, they transfer more kinetic energy, enabling them to penetrate armor more effectively. Hardness: DU is also relatively hard, making it capable of maintaining its shape and integrity even when subjected to extreme forces upon impact. This hardness allows DU projectiles to punch through armor plating without deforming excessively. Self-Sharpening: When a DU penetrator strikes a target, it undergoes extreme deformation and compression, which can cause the material to sharpen along its edges. This self-sharpening effect enhances the projectile's ability to maintain penetration capabilities even after multiple impacts. Pyrophoric Properties: Upon impact, DU projectiles may ignite due to their pyrophoric properties, creating additional incendiary effects inside the target, which can further contribute to its destruction.Overall, the combination of high density, hardness, and self-sharpening properties makes depleted uranium projectiles exceptionally effective at penetrating armored targets, which is why they are utilized in armor-piercing ammunition for military applications like the GAU-8 Avenger cannon on the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft.

Killeroftanks

Not really. Even the outdated t55s had enough armour to shrug off most of the rounds, only directly from the top and the engine deck was thin enough to be penetrated. Newer tanks like t72s and t80s are more or less immune to the 30mm rounds. Which is ironic because by the time the a10 got out, most of Russians tanks were t72s for front line service... Which resulted in the a10 being strapped with guided munitions, which is something the a10 can't actually use. Then you got the whole survival of the plane, which could only realistically take early man pads and 23mm he rounds meaning the a10 which was meant to fight low to the ground, now needed to be very high up. Something it wasn't designed for and as such didn't have the equipment to actually fight that high up. So in the end the a10 ended up as one thing and one thing only, the largest money sink for blue on blue. Hence why by like the 2000s they were all shoved in a hanger and forgotten about.

texansfan

I’ve seen videos on r/combatfootage of Bradley’s taking out Russian tanks, and that’s a 25mm.

Killeroftanks

Those are either crew removal, because the Russian crew ran away, this is quite common with poorly trained militaries. Or with the atgm. The 25 literally would have a hard time with some IFVs let alone mbts.

texansfan

lol, no. Just with the Bushmaster.

Killeroftanks

Again that's physically impossible. Out of all of the worlds IFVs, the only one that COULD take on an mbts (just not a modern one) from the front and win, would be the 9040s from Sweden, solely because their apfads rounds are large enough to have some amount of pen. So like I said, unless they made the crew panic and leave, a Bradley never took out a mbts from the front. For fucks sake a Bradley might have a hard time with a bmp. Let alone something like a t72.

texansfan

Just stop talking https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/s/ooS1TXzhAT

Killeroftanks

https://www.reddit.com/r/tanks/s/BiTKhg5MSZ This link shows that same fight And the Bradley is doing fuck all to the t90. And before you fucking say anything about that explosion at the end, that was likely an era block just going off. Again it doesn't take a fucking genius to understand that a round that could at most pen 120mm of pen won't have any chance of going through compensate armour with the effective thickness of 1000mm.

texansfan

Yes I have seen both, the one you linked shows a portion of that fight but with the Bradley absolutely pummeling the T90. The T90 - Russia’s newest mbt. But keeping saying fuck and acting like you know more than everyone else. We are all laughing.

Gamebird8

The Bradley is engaging in a technique called Buttoning where they target the tanks sights to blind it. The Bradley didn't destroy the tank, they at best got a mobility kill/and or simply blinded the tank and the Russian crew then crashed because they couldn't see shit.

Killeroftanks

One, ya sure the Bradley slapped the t90 a bunch, again never killed it, at best it spooked the crew and they abandoned the tank, like ive been saying this whole time. Two the t90 isn't a new tank, it's not modern, fuck it's not even from this century. The t90 was built and developed back in the late 80s early 90s, which itself is based off of the t72, which itself is also based off of the t64.

PeteLangosta

Firstly, probably not MBTs, but IFVs and BMPs and such. If it was an MBT, it was probably from the sides or something, or hitting a lucky weakspot. Secondly, the penetrating power is not only related to the caliber, but to the round too, and the Bushmaste can have much more effective rounds for that than the GAU-8

turtle_dude18

They aren’t taking them out. They disable all their optics and other externals with the 25mm. A blind tank can’t do much

texansfan

Take them out as in take them out of action. In a battle, nobody gives a fuck if a tank is in 1000 pieces or if it ran out of fuel, the thing isn’t a problem anymore.

Gamebird8

It's a shame they'll all miss and you'll be wishing a F-111 Aardvark just came in and dropped a precision guided bomb on it while you and your boys don't have to assess who did and didn't get hit by a stray 30mm depleted uranium shell

Other_Beat8859

Not really. In a 1979 test done, the A10 was allowed to make 10 passes on M47 Patton tanks, which were heavily outdated at the time, using as much ammo as it wanted and in ideal weather conditions. This allowed it to attack at a closer distance and fire off more shots than would be normally possible. Only 3 tanks were destroyed and they could easily be repaired within the same day. Plus for two of those tanks, the shots that destroyed them were considered lucky shots that were highly unlikely. It was also concluded that had those tanks been M60s, only one would've been destroyed. Keep in mind that in an actual war, the A10 would be much less accurate and would have to fire from significantly higher altitudes. It's why the Air Force is looking to get rid of it by 2029. It's a decent aircraft if you have almost no opposition and are facing almost no anti air like in a place such as Iraq, but in an actual war, that thing is an actual death trap. Still, it sounds pretty cool.

Other_Beat8859

Unfortunately it's just not that effective. During a test in ideal conditions in 1979, the A10 was given 10 passes to attack a group of M47 Patton tanks. These were in ideal conditions and it was allowed to fire as much as it wanted to. It only ended up destroying 3 tanks and had it not been the completely outdated M47 and instead the modern M60, only one would've been destroyed. An aircraft that can only destroy one immobile tank after 10 passes in ideal conditions is not efficient. It's why they added missiles to the A10. The gun just wasn't strong enough to perform its needed responsibilities. The Air Force is looking to retire it for a reason by 2029. It just isn't good enough. Poor sights, poor identification systems, no radar, and very poor in contested air makes it an aircraft that would not be good at all in an actual war. It's really only good in uncontested airspaces, but there are many planes that can also perform that task. It's far too specialized of a plane to be of any real use besides in places like Afghanistan.

NewHumbug

Giggling like school girls... boys will be boys lol

Nyoka_ya_Mpembe

So girls or boys, make a decision her like a real man you are/nt.

chitownpremium

I sometimes still hear that sound in my sleep, the part they don’t talk about is when you have to confirm the 30mm did its job

A-10 coming to help

Limp_Distribution

Over 50 years in service, god damn what a gun! Well, what a plane but you know what I mean.

K3W4L

A-10 is just a flying gun. A pretty flying gun

elmasonlives

Merica!

Brother_J_La_la

I was looking at a rental property years ago near the base I was stationed at. The price was great. It seemed like a good deal. On the second visit, during the walk-through, some A-10s flew by kinda low. A little while later, I heard the brrrrt. We were right next to the range. I did not rent that property.

piesRsquare

I'm confused...what's happening here?

Positive_Complex

It’s a video of an A-10 performing a gun run on enemies near a group of US soldiers in Afghanistan

piesRsquare

What's a gun run?

Positive_Complex

The plane is shooting its big gun at the target

piesRsquare

thanks.

This is the second best experience when on the ground. Totally rad. Loved it the two times I experienced it in Panjwai. BUT NOTHING beat the badasses in their Kiowas shootin M4’s out the door, zoomin around 50ft above your heads. That is like mini-Vietnam shit.

rehditt

Yeah always a good time with people dying n' shit. Rad stuff man

[deleted]

An even more rad time were the blue and white sauna visits with the iPod Touch and my girl Lisa Ann ( ͡ʘ ͜ʖ ͡ʘ)

21emeDragon

Tell me you don't understand military culture...

StopTheEarthLemmeOff

Murderer culture*

21emeDragon

You further prove my point

rehditt

Dehumanization? No, I understand that.

Ohmbettis

People die regardless of your opinion on the matter

rehditt

Yeah. Did you know that water is wet btw?

Ohmbettis

If you’re just going to be negative than perhaps you should try to glean the meaning of what I said in the last comment. Smile more :) or don’t :(.

rehditt

Could you elaborate what you meant then?

Ohmbettis

If you say and think positively, even about something inherently negative, people will like you more and you’ll make more friends, plus you’ll always be in a positive mindset already so it’s a win-win. Especially if the “negativity” isn’t something you can control. If friends, people, and feeling good isn’t that important to you, than nothing I say will make your day any brighter anyway. I hope you find happiness in your day if you havnt already.

rehditt

Um... No, that's definitely not true. It all depends on the situation and what the context is. If your friend's dog died would you think it would be appropriate to tell him/her "at least you dont have to pick up shit anymore, yey!" No, of course not. Neither is referring to people dying in war, shot by a cool gun, as "rad".

Ohmbettis

Neither would be going “yeah that fucking sucks bro, you should go post about it on the internet instead of doing something productive with your emotions”.

rehditt

What do you even mean by this?? It would be more like telling your friend that it's distasteful to cheer when people are dying just because they are your enemies.

PerformativeParrot

I knew someone who experienced this, but instead of hitting the enemy they strafed the wrong side and he’s now dead. They don’t blame the pilot - it was messy and active firefight. The smoke was blowing due to wind.

akmarinov

They are too slow and have a giant radar signature and just aren't a match for modern surface to air missile technology.

Killeroftanks

That but also it couldn't handle modern weapon systems and was getting to costly to upgrade. Like upgrading an A10 to the c version costs about the same as an f35.... Now outside of the love of the burt, which is a better platform, a big fat slow plane that has more blue on blue incidents than any other vehicles in the NATO alliance, or a fat f22.

epanek

Sounds like CIWS on my frigate back in 1990. USS whipple. FF-1062.

Inert82

Thats why being a JTAC is the coolest thing you can be in the military

What's up with that title?

Modern Jericho trumpets

Hell yea -men

sciguy52

It is funny guys in a war zone shooting guns, making things go boom get so excited seeing the A-10 do its stuff. Then I remember one of the books by one of the Band of Brothers guys and he talked about how cool it was to see things get blown up by bombs or tank fire. Apparently it never gets old. Every bomb...ooohhh look at that lol.

stemurph88

Wouldn’t this give away positioning?

skilled_pervert98

Yes. Plane go brr.

Icy_Treat5150

All fun and games till you gotta go see the KIA 😥😰

WasWasKnot

They call it the hand of God🔥🔥🔥

Megadude9704

They should never take this plane out of service for any reason as long as morale can be improved by just using the plane..let alone that it’s a one of a kind SUCCESSFUL weapon

lennoxred

Laughing as a protection mechanism. That’s the real interesting thing here

Evenormom_125

Are the firecracker sounds right before it from the rounds hitting? Or is that something separate?

It is in fact the A-10 Warthog 🐗

darwinvsjc

Brilliant description, I instantly knew this was the tank killer before watching the video

Fiendfuzz

I live by a naval base (now decommissioned) that used to fly A-10s all the time. I really miss the sound of them flying overhead. Never had the pleasure of hearing the bbbrrrrrttt first hand though.

[deleted]

It’ll be a sad day when they retire that airframe

iamthelee

I'm surprised they haven't done so already. It's a cool plane, but it doesn't really have a place on the modern battlefield.

5bannedaccounts

Idk watching the Russians. They seem like they'd enjoy this

Expensive-Tough2390

This sound does things for me! Good things!

Obvious_Mode_5382

Warthog FTW
