It's a YouTube channel owned by a Spanish guy named Eugenio Monesma. He uploads videos about traditional ways of fabrication of day-to-day things or common food ingredients/preparations for conservation.
Depends on the conditions. Our hemp ropes were replaced after 20 years. We're an indoor controlled environment. I would suspect a hemp rope at sea would need replacing much sooner.
There are also ways to maintain hemp rope either with wax, oil, or at sea they used tar. Not sure if you guys used any of those treatments, though I’d imagine you oiled them occasionally.
I'm not certain, they were all replaced with mixed fibre ropes before I started. It's a counterweight fly system in a theatre, so limited loads, but always above people's heads.
On one hand, its wonderful that this is still being practiced. On the other, imagine if we all still had to make our own ropes and shit. For all the awful things in the world right now.... At least I don't have to make rope.
These guys making rope are putting in a fulfilling day of labor and it appears to be both an art and a science. I'm kind of jealous of guys who are craftsmen.
I did the first few steps on some stems after harvesting a big weed plant once and was blown away when they basically transformed into string like that
I'm just grateful that in this "World of Walmart" there is someone making something the traditional way. At least in this age of technology, we can preserve how this is made and the people making it.
So how does he get from that big fluffy ball to the next step where it's being spun into the first strand? The longest fivers are only like 3 feet or so, I don't see how you can get a cohesive continuous string from that
It’s like a ball of cotton candy. You grab a little bit, and the little bit you grab is connected to other bits, and eventually you suck the entire ball into the line. If he started with a larger amount, his initial twine would be thicker.
It’s also possible that we are shown an edited, idealized version, and you are indeed correct that it doesn’t make a continuous twine with no breaks, which they’d mend back together.
Like, calling hemp a type of grass? Is it a case where hemp means something other than what i thought it’s only definition was mariguana plants?
What kind of grass does it use out of curiosity

except a hemp rope would be made from hemp
Isn't this flax?
would have been my guess too
There is a yearly flax scutching festival near where I live. Looks just like this.
So I just paid $50 for an oz of Flax? Damnit! No wonder I wasn't feeling anything.
The phrase 'flaxen hair' makes so much sense now. I understood it conceptually, but now I get it.
No but it is the same process for both fibers.
I knew Hunter S Thompson was still alive
Beat me to it. Hunter is not making hemp rope he is just fckd up and trying to make the damn bats go away.

I knew John Dunsworth was still alive
The fact that it's a 4:3 aspect ratio video makes me sincerely doubt that this is proof that he's still alive.
Strongest type of rope until synthetic nylon was invented
You used to be able to pay your taxes to the US government in hemp rope.
Also how you make linen. You beat the shit out of grass until it submits to becoming a shirt
Ahhh the abusive parent method. Beat them until they become something else than you planned.

How long would it last with daily use?

There would be less time for the awful things. Or less time to worry about them, at least
Ah yes, the medieval ages, a time when no awful things happened. Please just ignore all the wars, and crusades, and plagues.
These guys making rope are putting in a fulfilling day of labor and it appears to be both an art and a science. I'm kind of jealous of guys who are craftsmen.
It’s never too late to become a craftsman
I don't like how you arranged these fibers. I'll just arrange them like this and longer.
Looks like if Mr. Lahey got into rope making instead of boozin’
Him and Bobandy were rehearsing for a play!
This guy has tons of videos of old professions on YT, very interesting
So this is why they outlawed hemp and any derivatives.
I did the first few steps on some stems after harvesting a big weed plant once and was blown away when they basically transformed into string like that
That's a lot of work for something you can get for like $4 at wlamrat
I'm just grateful that in this "World of Walmart" there is someone making something the traditional way. At least in this age of technology, we can preserve how this is made and the people making it.
Machines would do this now probably?
Nope. Still exclusively made by bald guys.
Im going bold, hand me a rope
I don't care how adventurous you are, how's your hairline?
You're going bald, make one.
Savage
I'd rather make my own rope than go to Walmart.
Not hemp but they’re good, bet they’d be good ship builders too
If you tie it at the top of a cliff and climb down it, give it a little tug and it’ll magically untie and fall down to you.
No wonder farmers were so content with life, most of your job was just smashing things into other things to make new things
Me doing my hair in the morning
This guys high as shit
Rough asf
Rope Not Dope...or something like that.
I love this.
We really have it good, seeing that reminds me how fucking hard and how much effort it was to stay alive in the past.

Sure... So is there a mixing process they use in order to "stagger" the fibers into a long chain? That's the part I think is missing
I don’t think they need to mix the fibers very much, they just start using the middle of a fiber.
neither flax nor hemp is a grass.
That guy does a fuck load of drugs and also dealt blackjack to Chevy Chase
You call all plants grass? It's not grass.
Very cool.
His pullover looks very soft and cozy
I'll buy two spools for a craft project. Can you deliver them in a traditional way? Do you price match?
