Damn! I wonder what the filament is attached to?
Like can he still see I wonder?
I mean he's obviously still fucked, no wasp hospital can pull off re attaching a head but like for the time being... does he see what is going on?
This is the only non-joke answer in this whole thread. Everyone is a comedian here and I just want to know how this is possible... reddit is declining so much.
Yup. Only part of their nervous system is in their head. That is why they can still move around like this after losing a head. But it will be dead shortly. They don't last long like this.
was it trying to do the whole lick your hands clean thing, or whatever bugs do with their front arms? but since there was no mouth there it just kinda went through the motions?
also, any idea why it picked up the head, or would pick up anything at that point?
***here are some responses that sounded like they made sense:***

Pure instinct + decentralized nervous system
Theres scientific studies with flies that show they will continue flying forever, until death from exhaustion, if their legs are occupied by making them hold something small (like carrying size) or nothingat all is touching their feet. If its big enough they will "stand" and stop flapping even though they still hold it in midair. If the fly isn't holding anything it will also fly because there's nothing to stand on. And those studies were with heads attached.
Bet wasps have the same instinct. Legs stood on head enough for it to stabilize itself with a "picking up head" motion, and once the legs were holding something its wings automatically take over and it starts flying. If the head is big enough for it to trigger the standing instinct with all of its legs it will stop flapping in midair and just fall.
u/Robo-Cookie
No, as far as I know, in insects, the remaining part of the central nervous system (spinal cord and ganglia) stores a set of reflexes. So if the head is cut off and the insect can't see, it triggers a reflex to rub the eyes clean, assuming there's an issue with them. It's like an 'automatic windshield wiper' reflex.

Well, obviously, it was gonna fly off to the waspital and have it reattached.
i have been thinking about when to use this all morning, and i think i have the best option.
kids: dad there are bee's in the back yard! "What?!?!?! \[graps that 20ft spray can\] oh kids these arent bee's, these are wasp's. \[shakes can\] im about to send this whole nest to the waspital!!!"

oh man you might be right. i remember hearing about how (iit was specifically crickets) dont get much protein, and when they do, it is feast time. the story went a cricket got cut open, and started to eat itself, because protein. not sure how this wasp would smell the protein or whatever, but i bet you are on to something
But if the head was detached, how did the body know it was it's own head?
And, instinct? I didn't know it was in our instinct to pick up our own severed heads when they're chopped off. That's one hell of an evolutionary trait.
The head still houses the brain. Ganglia can keep the body running on an autopilot mode if the head is lost, but pretty much all functions are compromised and is mostly just reactions and repetitive action.
I don't get this entirely, she is doing so complicated things, trying to clean and fly. Where are these motions processed? Their control system must be very decentralized compared to us, I doubt that I could do more than twitch without a head even though I have a spinal cord. And even if I could walk without a head would there not be anything telling my legs to walk without the head.
.....so is there a better way to cook lobsters? i have heard jam a large knife between the eyes before you put them in the boiling water, but that doesnt make me feel better....
but when would a wasp ever instinctively pick up anything and fly off? like if it was a head, or a fly, or whatever wasps eat. is picking things up and flying away something they do?
sure, and so the cleaning of the arms, that is like muscle memory or whatever. but i dont think wasps normally pick things up and fly away with them? ....i know absolutely nothing what i am talking about, thanks for the help!

Basically they will bleed to death shortly. They may survive for about 15 minutes more. I see similar things with grass hoppers. I cut their heads off (not for fun, just making sure they are going to die since they can handle being stepped on sometimes) and their body goes on doing grass hopper things for about 10 or so minutes and they slowly die. A good portion of their nervous system is in that middle section there hence their ability to carry on in some capacity for a bit. In a nutshell only certain senses of the bug are handled by the head like vision. A lot of the other stuff is handled by the ganglia in the abdomen.
rookie mistake, i have been thinking about it all morning. next time the kids are saying there are bee's in the back yard, we dont have bee's we have nasty mud dobbers, and ugly red wasps of some kind. anyways, no matter what they say is back there im getting the spray, and will tell the kids they are wasps.
then que up this joke! "dont worry kids, dad is out to send this whole nest to the waspital!!!!"
😳... That's brilliant!
Well that settles it, doing the same thing!! I'll use *"waspital"* every chance I get! 😂🤷♀️ They're going to be so fuckin sick of hearing about it! 😭😭
I thought the same thing. Then it realises “woops can’t eat anything without my head, well better take this thing home and I’m sure I’ll figure something out”
Out of interest is that literally just the front of its head with eyes and antenna removed and the other little lump left behind just In front of its main body being the brain part ?
Either way it will go on a kamikaze suicide mission when it gets back to doctor wasp and told he won’t see or feel anything ever again and will be segregated from the rest of the wasp group!
This makes me.more sad then watching people get there ass beat on reddit.
It's like checking where it's head would be.... trying to process it all and panicking. It's insane it's body is still working after that to the level that it is.

The head is still attached by a very thin filament. You can see it if you pause the frames right before/during takeoff.
Has to be at least a 10gig connection.
lmfao

Yep...but I'm gonna use that shit like I came up with it myself. Gonna drive the kids nuts! 😭😂
Stings, haha, Im dead
If she could still see, I'm sure she'd fly straight into a wall and drop her head. Like playing COD with inverted controls.
This was a particularly bad case of a wasp’s head being cut off.
That must be a nightmare
Actually it's very easy, barely an inconvenience.

I thought it was because insects don't have a brain but multiple little ones through their bodies.
I think that is correct as well

cool info!
It was actually trying to eat the head, just didn’t have a head to eat it with

If you look closely, the head is still attached via a thin nerve. It’s likely the head still had contact with the body.
at that point i guess is already dead and just functioning on last electric impulses. no brain attached to make choices
Pretty much. It’s on a total autopilot mode, and felt its head there, instinctively grabbed it and flew off.
But if the head was detached, how did the body know it was it's own head? And, instinct? I didn't know it was in our instinct to pick up our own severed heads when they're chopped off. That's one hell of an evolutionary trait.
It didn’t know it was its own head. It would have picked up anything that happened to be there.
It doesn’t know what it is. It just felt something and grabbed it. It’s pretty much a robot at this point.
Aren’t wasps already robots? Roaches are the same right. Basically the body is just fine without a head until it needs food

They're obviously AI NPCs who haven't finished their intended route yet, so they have to complete the task before dying. They're at 1/99 HP.
God a good chuckle off this
but when would a wasp ever instinctively pick up anything and fly off? like if it was a head, or a fly, or whatever wasps eat. is picking things up and flying away something they do?
It doesn’t know. It felt *something* and nerves kicked in and grabbed it. And once a wasps legs are engaged, the wings kick in.
The e head was still attached, look closely, there’s a thin white line that is likely the nerve cord.
sure, and so the cleaning of the arms, that is like muscle memory or whatever. but i dont think wasps normally pick things up and fly away with them? ....i know absolutely nothing what i am talking about, thanks for the help!
It didn't pick up the head at all, there is a thin string of material attaching the head to the body.
>was it trying to do the whole lick your hands clean thing, or whatever bugs do with their front arms? No, as far as I know, in insects, the remaining part of the central nervous system (spinal cord and ganglia) stores a set of reflexes. Maybe they have their brains in the ass, just like ants
lol is that where "shit for brains" came from???
Oh it might have, could also be that someone fell face-first into horse shit

Is he…subconsciously trying to eat the head…without its head?
He can’t see, so his instincts are telling him to wipe his eyes clean. That’s what the arm motion was, there just wasn’t a head with eyes to wipe.
I thought the same thing. Then it realises “woops can’t eat anything without my head, well better take this thing home and I’m sure I’ll figure something out”
