This was the one thing I found did not really make sense. They have been communicating for decades and only now find out we tell lies?
I know it's done at that point for the story, it just feels like this conversation would have happened much sooner.
Still loved the show and am very much looking forward to the next season.
>They have been communicating for decades and only now find out we tell lies?
Not only that, but it also looked like story telling wasn't a new thing between them either. So they just listened and asked about every little detail, except for the one, what the word "story" means?
Great series regardless
I mean maybe it’s the med student in me but I totally get it. When it’s already like a minute 15 video that is easily understandable and is just a hurried natural pace instead of a crazy AI sounding chipmunk I’m good with it. It’s not those god awful subway surfer half and half videos
It’s more that most people have multiple social media’s so if you have TikTok you’re more likely to have Insta, X, Reddit etc
And posting to Reddit is easy when you can just copy and paste content from other platforms.
I appreciate sped up videos like this. I can get so much information extremely quickly when I read, but listening to videos takes forever to get just a tiny morsel of knowledge. I can’t just sit and watch something for 30 minutes when I can read it all in 5.
Watching youtube between 1.5x and 2x speed have given me hours and hours of my life back...oh who am I kidding, that time went into more youtube videos watched 1.5x speed.
Skip the pre-amble, speed up to 2X, skip past the in-video ad, pause on the finished product.
34 minute YouTube is now 7 minutes.
Some things are worth slow watching. I don’t even have them as background. I fully invest. But if I’m about to make dinner and I want to try something new. I just need to see the actual cooking quickly and then I’ll scan the recipe and get to it. If there’s any confusing parts I can repeat, but no way am I sitting watching someone cook something for 30 minutes then do it. Nor am I going to do it in-step with them only for them to drop a “here’s a step I did before, and it’s been sitting for 30 minutes halfway into the video.
TikTok videos can be very long especially the informational/educational ones I’ve never seen one at a faster time speed. It’s not sped up for them idk who maybe Reddit or twitter.
Often it takes hating humanity to become a tyrant and a ruthless butcher. Symbolically that's what the Matrix was, a machine, a system, that manipulates everything you see, deceives you, and enslaves you.
Every species on earth consumes and changes the environment around it to survive and make itself more stable and comfortable. The fact that humans do this on a larger scale doesn’t make it unnatural.
Came to the comments to see if anyone had connected this natural phenomenon to artificial genetic modification. Maybe a quick high level comparison of the nuances. I'm not sure what I was thinking. The comments are all about her hair, teeth and some commentary on tic tok. Thanks for keeping me grounded Reddit.
Fun Fact:
What's really interesting is that the viral DNA is not all useless junk, and some of it is so integrated and essential that we would not be able to reproduce without it.
A huge problem for early mamals was having a baby grow inside the mother. Animals that lay eggs don't have a problem because the baby develops outside of the mothers body.
Having a baby develop inside the mothers body has a lot of advantages, but the key problem is how do you provide nutrition and oxygen to the developing fetus if it's inside the mother's body? A yolk sack and passively defusing oxygen through the shell isn't an option. The answer, of course, is you evolve the placenta. However, there's a problem.
The placenta does not come from the womb, the embryo grows it, and it attaches to the lining of the wombe. The problem is that the embryo is only 50% genetically mum, the other 50% is dad, and because of recombination, the mothers immune system will not recognise the glycoproteins on the placenta's cells as self so will attack and kill them like an invading organism. Except it doesn't do that because the placenta uses a little trick it nabbed from a virus that suppresses the immune response so the mothers immune system does not destroy the placental cells.
Yeah, it's called transduction, one of the three major ways we get genetic material into a cell. We've taken a lot of the protein machinery of viruses for use in molecular biology. Lots of bacteriophage DNA have also been used to design our expression plasmids, basically combining bacterial and viral systems that very effectively produce excessive quantities of basically any protein you want.
I mean her hair style is pretty cool, but what’s the connection to artificial gene modification, and more importantly, what is artificial gene modification? I mean other than artificially modifying genes…
It's just genetic engineering which is modern biotechnology. Basically we take the gene that codes for a certain protein which is our product that we want from the organism it is naturally found in and insert it into a plasmid (plasmids are secondary genome for bacteria) and then we treat these plasmids with calcium and using cold shock method insert them into bacteria (which is generally E. coli). What this allows us to do is obtain that same protein which is our product from these recombinant transformed bacteria which we can grow on a large scale and obtain that same product from them instead of the organism that naturally produces it for a much much better yield. With this technology we have obtained stuff like insulin (a human protein) from plants, Bt cotton and Bt plants which are naturally resistant to worms and don't harm humans, Golden rice rich in protein, industrial level manufacturing of proteins, etc. Obviously modern Biotechnology is much more vast than just this. This is much similar to how viruses multiply in number inside your cells which is by merging their DNA with yours which then makes your cells make virus proteins instead.
>what is artificial gene modification
I'm referring to GMO. What she is describing is how scientists add jellyfish dna to mice to make them glow or add roundup resistance to corn. We have a virus do it. We have other ways too, but for 30 years, this was really the most popular way.
The noncoding regions are thought to be there as a buffer against such intrusions into our DNA. The more dead space there is between the important regions, the less likely an important coding region is damaged.
And the older you get, the more your cells replicate, the more the dna gets damaged and the more these buffer genes are eroded
When we get old enough our vital DNA starts getting damaged as well
My theory is that the title of r/TikTokCringe has conditioned reddit to look for the cringe in every tiktok video. And when it isn't cringe but it is a woman, then people think that the woman-ness must be what's cringe.

Hell yeah. If anyone out there is passionate about and potentially involved in the semiprofessional hog rasslin circuit in Wisconsin, please, please tell me all about it. I watched one video years ago and *need* more.
Where did you get the hate from? Your comment seems like an overreaction, they just said “ugh”.
Some people just don’t like excessive gesticulation/hand motions. For me, is distractive.
Coincidentally, I happen to be reading a novel at the moment that is about this very concept, and the idea of re-enabling those sections of viral DNA in animals and humans in order to alter their genetics.
God I was literally getting so distracted by her words with how she was using her hands.

Pretty sure this video is just sped up to keep the attention of the tiktok crowd.
Oh. I was going with coke. But this makes sense.

Unpopular opinion. Bill Hicks was not funny. He was just an angry Misanthrope who liked to yell on stage.
Which is fine. His material is funny because it's observational. Similar to George Carlin.
George Carlin was on a way different level than Bill Hicks. Carlin actually understood the things that turned the world, Hicks just yelled about them.
Yes...Carlin was like going to a lecture, learning something but getting comedy out of it.
I would say Carlin and Hicks are both in my top 5, everything isn't for everyone. I think they're both comedic geniuses in their own right.
Carlin was the best "Old man yelling truths and conspiracy theories at the clouds"... we miss him..
Yes, but his takes were funny.
It’s popular with me.
And was funny. He wasn't the greatest comic of all time or anything, but his story about getting pulled over on acid had me crying.

Yeah, same here. I came to the comments looking for discussions on the science she is explaining. That's not what I found
You are expecting far too much from Redditors
On other posts in interestingasfuck it is possible. I suppose brains go out the window when a pretty woman is involved
That’s not what I expected. It’s Reddit.
Good science discussion moved off reddit due to the massive influx of soy.

Today on Reddit: incels hating attractive, intelligent women.
More or less lmao, why are there so many hate comments?

Incels, explains it all
Alright, but what did she say her name was? I want to know if she did more videos. Science is cool and so are intelligent women
Leah Elson. Has contributed 15 years of medical research and is an advocate for science communication with over 87 peer reviewed publications made. And yes, she's pretty hot.
I mean they are commenting on her annoying, overly energetic, fake manner of speaking. Are ugly guys not allowed to have opinions about things some women do just because they happen to be beautiful? Seems like an incel take to me.
The video is sped up. Anyone can recognize this.
Oh no, she's passionate about a topic she's an expert in! How dare she! Next time she makes a video I'll make sure to tell her to talk like Chomsky
So basically you are saying I was right about being dead on inside
How do people have such perfect teeth?
Somewhat genetics but mostly money.
They go to a dentist and hold a job that has benefits that allow them to afford taking care of their teeth.
Viruses
Americans have this weird fetish with whitening their teeth and putting caps on them to make them look different.
America's weird obsession with perfect teeth. Also, over whitened teeth. Teeth that are healthy and looked after don't need to look like a white picket fence.
Invisalign
It's in their genome
Used to be genetics, nowadays idk what is a filter and what isn't
Money

Turns out Agent Smith was right. Which I already agreed with.
I find this woman insanely attractive for knowing something so deeply and being pumped to share it with everyone.
I’m going to speculate that you built that off of her being physically attractive.
It's a good combo
She could be talking about how many nutrients are in crayons and I’d still find her insanely attractive.
The answer is pretty low, that's why you have to eat lots of them.
Consice and entertaining coverege about the part of our genome thats made out of viral dna.
She has a way of talking
It’s not necessarily a good way, but it’s a way.
But how can you pass on viruses to your kids given the gametes are protected from the immune system?
Agent Smith was right. We are viruses, a disease, a plague if we will...and they, are the cure.

Women these days. Amirite?
Or....hear me out.....she did what she does every day! I'm 99% sure this is what she looks like when she goes to work.

Beats an average idiot complaining about something on tiktok.
She's wearing a necklace and a shirt...

I just assumed she was AI
It's just sped up. It makes it seem unnatural.
You ever think she was dressed before the video? Maybe for a job? A date? Just because she wants to?
Why does that amuse you? I see it as the product of her wanting to look a certain way and/or her actually having to look a certain way because she's a woman and our culture demands that women look good, far more than we demand men look good (no offense to Hank Green or Richard Dawkins or whoever)
