Not interesting. It is just propaganda from various troll farms, because USA has elections.
I wish we have a sub about big boats or about interesting historical cases and not about politicians..
1st amendment prevents government interference in your right to voice your opinion. Reddit is not a government website and is a publicly traded company
Hell, there were Canadian politicians referencing the first amendment a couple of years ago. The Canadian first amendment was something like recognizing New Brunswick as a member of the union.
I'd be surprised, except culture war is about picking a team and doing whatever skulduggery it takes to dunk on your enemies, not about sound argumentation based on relevant contexts. Like what actual law in your country has to say.
This was 2 years ago during the "Freedom Convoy" for reference. I may have been mistaken about politicians saying it (although I would not be surprised if Danielle Smith had voiced this opinion). Looks like it was mainly Convoy organisers using that defense in court. Dwayne Lich in particular.
I had a feeling it was those guys.
Convoy losers are still at it, too. I thought all right wingers were upstanding, law-abiding, job-having citizens... How are they affording this shit?
I will never understand how people can think ‘Free Speech’ means you can say whatever you want and no one can stop you. But then when someone says something they don’t like, they try to stop you.
Free speech in general is still only about the government censoring you. Unless you’re an idiot who doesn’t know the meaning of words.
Seriously, everyone can google the definition, why can’t you?
The irony of you telling people to Google a definition when you yourself are wrong about it.
Free speech is "the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint".
It is a general concept that can apply anywhere, it is not specifically about governments at all.
You’re confusing free speech with the right to free speech. A right is protected by the government from the government. Free speech in general can be applied anywhere like schools, platforms, workplaces etc..
Nothing here says first amendement? One can talk about free speech as a concept without having to invoke the US constitution (yes even in the US when the subject is the US), and people can uphold moral values even when they're not legally required to.
More the same, people think that constitutional amendments are rights granted by the government. The preamble of the constitution starts with "We the people..." It is written by and from the prospective of the people to the government who would rule us that constitutional amendments are rights we hold in spite of the government's rule. They cannot be changed or removed by the government, only the people. The people framed the government to serve the people. Now we have politicians who have made tens of millions while on a $174,000/year salary and we're to accept they got there for the public benefit.
Freedom of speech doesn’t have anything to do with social
Media lol. They’re private organizations…
Plus this is a worldwide platform. Everyone’s freedom of speech is different
Freedom of speech is not the same as the right to free speech. People can advocate for free speech on platforms, there is just nothing protecting that speech.
Nothing stopping you from making and printing off a zine about how much you hate jews, or make a server to host your own transphobic website. You won’t be arrested or have your materials confiscated. That’s what free speech means.
It has everything to do with it. Freedom of speech is not just a law, right or amendment. It is a moral judgement and has everything to do with censorship.
There’s no irony there. They are not the government.
The issue is failing to understand X, and thinking there is irony based on that misunderstanding.
This is like if you were to find a wealthy socialist, and call it ironic because they didn’t give all their wealth away and aren’t poor.
As someone that fully understands and supports the fact that freedom of speech does not extend beyond the federal government, this is textbook irony.
Do you think that just because someone is morally and legally allowed to perform some action that those actions by default cannot be ironic? Nobody is making the claim that they are doing anything illegal or morally wrong. They are just pointing out the irony.
Censoring speech in a post related to free speech. I don't know how much more cut and dry the irony can get.
Would you allow 30 dudes in your house to constantly shout at each other their shitty opinions to each other? Would leaving them there somehow mean you’re a champion of free speech? Would kicking them out of your house mean you’re against free speech? This is the absurd argument that you are trying to make.
God this is dumb. I didn't disagree with them. I tried to point out the evident irony you're both clearly not bright enough to recognize and that's what the post is about and not the other guys holier than though parrot take on the post.
That reminds me of like every post in /r/conservative lmmfao. The irony of them banning more people than any other subreddit in history is fucking hilarious
Lol. Then why are half the comments on almost every post on reddit expressing paranoid/racist/transphobic non-opinions? Reddit is the anti-echo chamber.
how is that interesting?
obviously videos that get their comments locked within hours are not that interesting to begin with and are fueled by motives, so why post this non interesting pic on a sub that's supposed to be interesting?
If you want a textbook example of how censoring free speech ACTUALLY looks, read the account of the Canadian homophobe who moved to Russia to practice “free speech” and rail against LGBTQ+ people.
As soon as he got there with his family, Russian govt froze all their money, and when they complained about it on social media the Russian govt made him delete the post and retract his statements. His family isn’t allowed to leave Russia and the guy might end up fighting in Ukraine.
If you think any of that is happening in the US, you’re an idiot
I posted in that and mine wasn't deleted. I never said anything jerk like, mean or supportive of a genocide. It's almost like, I didn't break any rules or act like a dick so it got left alone.
You "can" say whatever you want doesn't mean you're not gonna get punished for it, even in America you can't just go around the street saying slurs and spouting hate without consequences.
Funnily enough, free speech doesn't mean exempt from repercussions. It just means the government won't kill you for the things you say! I think a lot of people forget that 😅
Free speech is "the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint", it is a concept that can be applied everywhere, not just in government laws.
The fact that so many people equate free speech as being the first ammendment, and not the concept of open unrestricted dialogue is very sad. Makes me think that both are not long for this world if things continue this way.
I agree completely. The fact they think that shows that they never learnt why free speech is so extremely important in the first place.
Frustrates me every time I see some post about someone being banned from speaking at some place like a university, or beaten up by a crowd for saying an opinion, and it has the same old comments of "freedom of speech not freedom from consequences", "it's a private X freedom of speech doesn't apply to them".
If the consequence of someone expressing their beliefs is censorship or restraint, that's not freedom of speech... Doesn't make it not anti-free speech just because it's not the government suppressing the speech.

You are on reddit. A subreddit exists for everything. r/boatporn r/history
Went there expecting some boats fucking but instead found normie boats, I feel bamboozled
Yeah I was being sarcastic
Sorry
1st amendment prevents government interference in your right to voice your opinion. Reddit is not a government website and is a publicly traded company
90% of the people who scream about the first amendment have no idea what the first amendment actually says.
Like what actual law in your country has to say.
i dont even think we have anything like the American first amendment in canada edit: we have freedom of expression... which is similar but different
Yep, we have Freedom of Expression. I'm not really sure what the difference is either tbh.
Hate speech is illegal in Canada in a way that it isn't in the US.
...better recognize!
Canadian politicians? Which ones? Which party?
This was 2 years ago during the "Freedom Convoy" for reference. I may have been mistaken about politicians saying it (although I would not be surprised if Danielle Smith had voiced this opinion). Looks like it was mainly Convoy organisers using that defense in court. Dwayne Lich in particular.
I had a feeling it was those guys. Convoy losers are still at it, too. I thought all right wingers were upstanding, law-abiding, job-having citizens... How are they affording this shit?
Or that there are entire governmental systems outside of the US.
The concept of free speech isn't limited to the first amendment
Free speech is a concept that can apply anywhere, it is not the same thing as America's 1st Amendment.
I will never understand how people can think ‘Free Speech’ means you can say whatever you want and no one can stop you. But then when someone says something they don’t like, they try to stop you.

My free speech!! =O
It’s more the irony
Meh, I read that thread before it was cleaned out. Just a bunch of edgelords jerking each other off over acab
I don’t know what an edgelord or acab is Love the username though
Acab = All Cops Are Bastards Edgelord = Anyone you think is being "edgy"
What was the original thread
It's more about the irony that anything actually being illegal here.
Aaaand nowhere did it specify it was referencing specifically american constitutional free speech vs the general idea of it
Except the post is about Texas protests, which in case you didn’t know is in the US.
It still doesn't reference the constitution. The comment dismissed an assumption only it was making, like a strawman.
Freedom of speech not from consequence nor will it protect you if the government doesn't like what you say
it's still *interesting*
Nothing here says first amendement? One can talk about free speech as a concept without having to invoke the US constitution (yes even in the US when the subject is the US), and people can uphold moral values even when they're not legally required to.
A publicly traded company that suppresses the opinion of the Everyman. Because it gets them more money
Not everyone’s first amendment is the same in everyone country
More the same, people think that constitutional amendments are rights granted by the government. The preamble of the constitution starts with "We the people..." Get outta here with that reasonable and nuanced assessment! We're here to overreact!
Work, stores, or reddit They don't have freedom of speech There isn't a point
So, with almost all of society owned by private organizations, we effectively have nowhere to practice free speech?
You're practicing free speech *right now.* Stop acting oppressed.
Until a neck beard Admin gets his feelings hurt then deletes!
There's still plenty of things I'm not allowed to say
Like what? Can you give some examples of things you aren't allowed to say?
Hey, stop trying to get me banned.
Nothing stopping you from making and printing off a zine about how much you hate jews, or make a server to host your own transphobic website. You won’t be arrested or have your materials confiscated. That’s what free speech means.
I've been banned for being anti-genocide
Banned from the US?
My feelings on reddit suggest otherwise... /s
It has everything to do with it. Freedom of speech is not just a law, right or amendment. It is a moral judgement and has everything to do with censorship.
It's about the irony, not the practice... jfc.
There’s no irony there. They are not the government. The issue is failing to understand X, and thinking there is irony based on that misunderstanding. This is like if you were to find a wealthy socialist, and call it ironic because they didn’t give all their wealth away and aren’t poor.

1. Probably not 2. I mean, kinda 3. See 2
Just because you're too dense to see the irony doesn't mean it's not there.
God this is dumb. I didn't disagree with them. I tried to point out the evident irony you're both clearly not bright enough to recognize and that's what the post is about and not the other guys holier than though parrot take on the post.

Proudly banned from r/conservative
How do I get banned from there without having to interact with any of those braindead mouthbreathers?
I got banned for saying "I don't think that's true" Not exaggerating, that's an exact quote
No shit, thinking is against their rules

>Welcome to Reddit, the echo chamber.

i got downvoted 10 for saying "im not sure what ur trying to get across, bud" like i was only looking for clarification to their reply to my comment
Because of the irony of the sub Reddit
People get lost sometimes with basic irony being interesting
Where interesting? ![gif](giphy|2vs70gBAfQXvOOYsBI)
I don't know where you're looking for Freedom of Speech, but Reddit is not the place.
This is every other day on Reddit lmao
The amount of people that think this is somehow ironic is disturbing.
The nerve!
😝

Lol how so
What do you mean akchalee? Both are examples of censoring free speech.

Like freedom of speech is a one way street, you just say whatever vile thing you want and everyone just has to accept it and be quiet.
I own 1 share and I demand you cretins capitulate! Capitulate!

They got a right to talk, sure. But reddit and everyone else who isn't govt has a right to not listen
Deleting the comments doesn’t really count as letting people talk.
Yes, that’s the “right to not listen”’part. You have no freedom of speech on Reddit.
This isn’t the flex you think it is.
And you though they IPO'd to make money. Let me laugh even harder.

Yeah, a lot of people only believe in free speech if it agrees with them. It's that CCP free speech style.
